with Ken green then Payne Stewart who's playing well today three under par in today's round Tom Kite and Craig Stadler those then are the leaders as of this moment hello I'm Jim McKay reporting from the country club and we are in Boston a wonderful area that respects its history respects his tradition maintains and reveres Bunker Hill and breeds Hill and Faneuil Hall and Lexington and Concord and all that sort of thing even reveres a wonderful old Relic called Fenway Park and thank heaven they d
o with a wonderful green monster the left field vets well the same is true of the country club they love tradition and history here as a matter of fact you hear the name of Francis we met so often in U.S open week around here that you really almost half expect them to walk out of that clapboard house just across the street here just across Clyde Street from the 17th green it's a wonderful feeling to be in this area and particularly at the U.S open which after all has a great deal to do with hist
ory and tradition one bit of news already to really quite Sensational news on the golf course Peter Jacobson with this putt on the 18th hole just a little while ago was putting for a 64. a seven under par round of 64. unfortunately there went he had started the day at nine over par ends today at two over 286 not 285. there's a scorecard for the day and look at those birdies on the front nine he went 30 that equals the U.S open record for the front nine and as for the second night he just kept it
up had a bogey on 11 and that was the only blemish on this scorecard for today Peter Jacobson and congratulations to him let's bring in now our traditional expert historical expert on the sport Dave Marr well thank you thank you very much Jim and that was a wonderful round by Peter Jacobson we'll just cover for the four leading players Curtis Strange the rap against Curtis has been all he does is make money he's been leading Money winner two out of the last three years and all its people seem t
o write about is he did not win Augusta in 1985 with Bernard Langer won he's got a lot to prove can he win a major he may be the best player playing right now that has not won a major championship Nick Faldo playing with Curtis today the present British Open Champion can he do what Tony Jacklin did so long ago in 1969 and 70. can he hold both titles at the same time his stats show he's playing better than anyone else in the field and Scott Simpson what a story hasn't really played well since he
won the open at Olympic last year but what a defense of his title and certainly back into the tournament Bob Gilder what a story that is won six tournaments on the tour in the past really got sort of tired of playing golf and lost his zest but he's back in a big way a lot of people thought he would go south yesterday he did anything but go south he's right in there with a great chance to win Curtis is two bogeys yesterday at 16 and 17 brought a lot of other people back into this tournament there
'll be many more stories before we've crowned an open champion this year okay Dave let's take a look at the final pairings now at who our on-course commentators will be following at 1 58 not very long from now it'll be Fred Couples and Mark O'Meara Judy Rankin will be following them as a matter of fact they should have teed off by now at 207 Larry meisen D.A wybring it's needle be with them Jerry Pate will be with Scott Simpson and Bob Gilder Jerry of course former U.S open Champion himself and
a 225 the final pairing Bob rosberg will be following his friend Curtis Strange and British Open Champion Nick Faldo now let's move to the First Tee the couple's group has already teed off D.A wyvern really got himself into this ball game yesterday Dave that was a wonderful round in all that weather foreign D.A has not been known for his play in the U.S open before it's played well in some major championships though and has gone a number of times to qualify in the British Open which I think show
s a lot that he'd go over there and take his chances this is a pretty strong opening Par Four by that I mean it's got length and of course the U.S opened up bumpers down on the left side I just like to put it in the Fairway here get off to an easy start it looks like he's done it always must feel good to get that first one down the middle now up on the first green we have the aforementioned red couples putting for a par ish four shots out of the lead he had hit his second shot in the bunker the
six footer far par downhill okay that was Judy Rankin reporting [Music] get you off to a good start too though you would rather play it a little easier than that and here is another man that got back in the tournament yesterday I think because of Curtis's two bogeys there at 16 and 17. this this is the kind of guy Fred Couples can shoot some low scores and has in an opening now Mark O'Meara who seemed to be out of it until he shot 66 yesterday five under par it's also a par putt okay he remains
three shots out of the league now let's go down to the practice putting green to Jerry Pate with the defender Scott Simpson thank you Jim I'm here with Scott Simpson Scott this time last year you were one shot out of the lead at the Olympic Club Tom Watson was leading ultimately he became the champion today it's the same thing Curtis Strange is leading your one shot back what are you thinking about before you tee off today well I am in the same position I just like to put as well as I did last y
ear it's probably the best putting around of my life but I just want to go out and play well and uh enjoy it out there and have fun and I'm just looking forward to the day but what have you done differently on your putting coming in the final seven or eight holes yesterday you had opportunities about five times to make some birdies and you missed them and if you look like you were stroking it well but what are you working on today on your putting I felt like I was smoking in pretty good and my d
istance was a little off some of them were a little too easy some were a little too hard so you know I'm just I'm not going to change anything just hopefully uh you know it'll get a little better thanks Scott good luck to you back up to you Jim McKay okay Jerry earlier this week you could have gotten pretty good odds against Scott Simpson successfully defending his championship but not now let's take a look at the first hole Dave as I said a strong opening hole you see the bunkers on the left si
de down there definitely in place slight dog leg to the left to level hole you're going to hear a lot from us about blind Chats on this particular the course and and where you can't see the green green or you may not be able to see the pen you may not be able to see the Fairway off the tee all in all length is the problem here at the first hole a relatively level green there as we see Fred Couples at the second hole Par 3 185 yards and departed every day so far yes it is 185 right to the hole to
day Jim Fred's got a five iron little breeze in his face I want you to watch if we stay with this particular picture Jim just watch how much he turns away from the ball he's got a tremendous turn there you wonder where he gets his strength think he likes that that looked a little loose going through and it's got to be right well not too far I've seen because I can't ever tell his swing anyhow you can't tell from his expression DIY ring on the first Fairway from 187 yards he's played a six iron v
ery good opening shot safely on the Green second T again the par three Mark O'Meara former U.S amateur Champion revamped his game once he got out on tour and has become a wonderful player that started left in his going left David [Music] where you want to be Letty well these guys play bunker shot so well Jim if he's got any kind of live whoops hello it may not be one you want to play Larry Mize From the Rough that's from just about 180 and he's playing a seven iron had a pretty good lie in the r
ough a good break might remember only two shots out of the lead a very good shot right the middle of the green we're back again at the U.S open let's go down briefly now to Bob rossberg with the leader Curtis uh a lot of people say they'd rather be one behind but I don't quite understand that that way of thinking you'd rather be one ahead wouldn't you well I feel very comfortable right now yeah when you're one ahead it means you can afford maybe a mistake or two when you're one behind you have t
o play just about a perfect round with as many good players as we have near the lead so I like where I am Curtis what about a day like this it's very bright out sometimes that makes it a little difficult to play when the wind gets up well I just I guess it means that toward the end the grains will get a little bit dried out greens might get just a little bit bumpier than when it's cloudy the moisture stays in but you know this is Sunday the open I'm not going to think a whole lot about that I'm
just going to play it as hard as I can at four you made it at 18 was a was a pretty good morale Builder well it was it made me go in last night with a with a good taste in my mouth and and I just you know stopped the bleeding as they say I made two mistakes at 16 and 17 and n18 it's just uh sometimes there's such a thing as a really a good car that really gets you going more so than a birdie thank you Curtis good luck and back to Jim McKay okay that of course D.A why everything that was his bird
ie attempt on the first Fred Couples for the attempt I think Davis I said yesterday you know Curtis Strange has been a rather Anonymous figure to the average fan as far as his personality is concerned I think we're going to know a lot more about this man as far as his personality and his character are concerned before this day's done he's got a lot of that Jim and what he said is we're looking at Fred Couples there someone wants to ask Hogan about the same question that Rossi did about being a s
troke ahead or a stroke behind he and Hogan said would you better rather be rich or poor of course you'd rather be ahead okay coming to Larry Mize where the attempt on the first hole one of the great things about 18 oil coverage I think is the fact that you can see this drama build it starts out relatively slowly here with the with the first holes of the wide open hole long hole and here's where it all begins First Tee Scott Simpson the defending champion [Music] well it's hooking down the left
side if it doesn't catch that shortcut of rock bounce oh just didn't quite bounce back out to the Fairway might not be too bad though Jerry Larry Mize the first hole back on the team Bob Gilder at 17 minutes past two eastern daylight time is preparing to hit his first shot we'll see some hard swings here one thing Bob is it is aggressive big shot right down the right center drawing perfectly down the center of the Fairway look at the run I mean it's 50 yard fast Simpson's t-shirt it got hit dead
hard you'd run too Jim yeah well Scott Simpson also safely off and it's interesting by the way that Francis we met in 1914 made a very good defense of his championship after winning the year before as Scott Simpson's been doing here we met finished fourth in 1914. very my eyes for tomorrow [Music] okay Larry Mize born and raised in Augusta Georgia where he won his greatest Championship the Masters remember holding out the little pit shot break the heart of Greg Norman that day matter of fact th
at was the second major in a row that someone had made a shot of Greg he's uh been lucky in a lot of ways unlucky in others unlucky this week when he hurt his wrist and had to withdraw standing by now ready to fill you in with a great deal of information and opinion I think Jack Whitaker with Jack Nicholas thank you Jim and Jack you've been in this situation so many times going off last or near the last group on Sunday in the U.S open what happens in the mind in that situation well as far as pre
paration goes Jack the preparation goes starts the evening before as soon as you finish your round you know you know the position you're in you know what you have to have to do the next day uh I generally I went to The Practice Tee to sort of relax myself I went to the putting green to relax myself get the tensions out from the night before and then I tried not to change my routine I tried to keep a routine that would keep me thinking the same way feeling the same way even down to sometimes even
having the same breakfast but your mind is you know you're obviously trying to think about the US Open but you're not trying to think about it you're trying to think that well let's just sort of be calm this is in just another golf tournament let's keep myself in uh you know everything everything even and then try to get there to the the first tea about an hour ahead of time and or the practice team then just try to gradually build yourself up so when you get to the First Tee you're ready to pl
ay was there any difference when you were trailing or on the lead would you repair differently well I think that when I was in the lead obviously I was a little bit more nervous than when I was behind in other words I look let's look at the leaderboard here today I mean if I were Curtis Strange sitting out there I've got the lead I know that uh I'm gonna have to play a good round of golf but I don't have to play a great round of golf if I'm leading I have to make sure that I shoot if I shoot eve
n par anybody else in the field is going to have to break 70 to beat me I look down the field I look if I'm behind let's just say let's take Lonnie Watkins for instance he's too under part of the day Lanny knows that if he shoots 67 today which is only four under par then Curtis Strange the leader has to break par to uh to uh beating uh everybody else would have to break 70. so I mean it works from all different from all different places and no matter where you are in that field you pick a score
and you know that somebody else is going to have to shoot not only a certain score to tie you but a certain score to beat you and then that's the way you play all right we'll be hearing from you thank goodness uh all afternoon Jack thank you let's go back now to Jim McKay all right Two Jacks thank you both it was Larry Mize I'll keep you up to date just looking to the future we'll be watching the leaders here in these early holes but Paul azinger who almost played himself out yesterday with a 5
over 76 is going five under on today's round and it's three under part it's the second 30 on the front nine as we watch the D.A in case you're wondering about Nicholas's breakfast that used to be a cheese omelet always I tried that but never helped me well he said he'd try to eat the same breakfast yes oh yes and that'll help my game [Music] that's 186 yard shot and he's played a four iron Against the Wind he's got to get up almost in the exact spot where the other ball is Larry played a four i
ron also just not quite enough Club it's tremendous crowds here they they could be much bigger but nobody'd be comfortable and they have limited the crowd Gilder remember the tremendous tee shot he hit on the first hole here with a nine iron from 158 Ball's gonna fly out of the roof and it's right at the flag if it's the right distance [Music] as you said Jerry it flew to the back of the green and into the second cut of the rough Scott Simpson had already played but this was the shot [Music] for
eign [Music] much better so we started about 50 yards after the tee shot behind his fellow competitor there's the man who won here 25 years ago in a three-way playoff Julius boros at that time the oldest U.S open Champion Ray Floyd has since taken that record away from him right now he is down with Bob rosberg Rossi Julius 25 years ago is a little different we played 36 holes the last round but what are your what are your memories about that day well I remember the high wind we had Bob for the l
ast two rounds and we'd throw that ball up in the air never knew where it was going to come down what do you think about the way the fellows are handling Brookline this year I know the weather's a lot better but it's amazing how they play well I I kind of took her right around the golf course yesterday and the fairways are in perfect shape and the greens are certainly a lot better than they were back there in 1963 and they're they're making a lot of Birdie puts out there and the scores indicate
that Julie should get into play any since your operation I had a hip replacement I was at played nine holes yesterday but I played in the Legends go off way back in April only played one round since then but I'm going to start playing again I feel a lot better and I have a kind of difficult time walking but I've been kind of hitting the ball knocking at about 180 yards 185 yards well we all miss you out there Judas thank you and good luck okay Bob nice to talk to you let's get back to Jim McKay
the other flappable Julius boros it was just like that when he was winning championships I understand he's got one of those titanium hips and he's setting off all the alarms in the airport security now to David B [ __ ] on the First Tee ladies and gentlemen this is the final pairing of the day the referee is Bill battle the president of the United States Golf Association The Observer is Gene Howard a member of the usga's executive committee the special Observer is Bill Campbell the captain of th
e royal and ancient Golf Club of Saint Andrews Scotland the players are Nick Faldo Ascot England foreign strange Kingsmill Virginia [Applause] here with a 20 year old Francis remix defeated the great Barton and Ray of England the lone Englishman takes the honor clay away please the others here he is but this may be the most exciting shot of the day once you get underway Jim and you kind of get the butterflies out that's why it's important to hit I think a good tee shot at the first hole get away
smoothly that is a metal Fairway Club down the left-hand side of the Fairway [Applause] and in pretty good shape huh Nick Faldo safely off and didn't seem to hear that the gallery is encouraging him just as much as the other Scott Simpson for a birdie on the first hole still out the leader shirt is strange Curtis took a driver so they're all often playing now fourth round of the US Open valdo walking into the history books Maybe or maybe Curtis strain 190 yards downwind slightly out of his righ
t about the closest one we've seen so far beautiful shot he's the core stats they keep gym throughout the week Nick Faldo has hit more Fairways than anyone 41 out of 45. on the other hand this man Curtis Strange is the first in putting Curtis is 175 yards he has a six iron this is the toughest pin placement I think on the on the green especially with the wind coming out of the right [Music] please play it conservatively and safely and right in the middle of the grain he answered Nick's shot very
well there's a look at the statistics and you can see greens hit now remember this is all out of 54 holes and you can make up your mind there it's not 50 that's right well the fairways would be their 15 either par fours or par fives there's only three par threes is what I'm saying usually there's only 14 because it'd be four part threes and you can see the putting and the birdies and second T Bob Gilda this is the par three a moment ago Mark O'Meara has bogeyed the second home I dropped to 300.
oh baby come here no signs of the comeback veteran Bob Gilbert shaking that's terrific as we look at the hole it's a beautiful par three it's actually a hole of 185 yards but the members play that as a par four from another team this 18 holes is set up of a combination of 18 of the 27 holes here and you can see that as we see Scott Simpson Scott with a very good line of Bunker this is not a difficult shot he did miss the green though with a four iron here on the second hole pulled to the left
this is probably the best conditioned sand I've seen in a major championship in a long time very good texture the players can control the ball as you can see Scott did so well there unless you get a bad lie Jerry they're magic out of the bunkers wherever you play well it's automatic now back to the first green well the leaders birdie attempt Curtis is about 25 feet uh back where the flag is is relatively flat uh cutting just slightly uphill but uh pretty much of a of an even surface back there b
est finishes Curtis finished third in this championship in 1984 and fourth last year by his own assessment of his game he says he feels the strength of his golf game is that he doesn't have any real weakness and you probably know him better than most people is that you're feeling too or does he do something better than other people uh you know is there one part stronger no I don't think there's any one part stronger uh David he's a good putter but uh he does everything well Gilder on the right f
or the birdie nope had a good chance too may have been a little quick there that wasn't as smooth as Bob does because it's a little quick there on that putt makes his car and here strange we'll have that left for a part so we move along the golf course back out to the third Fairway or is he on The Fairway Jim he is just in the short rough there on the left and his main problem is The Stance he's got a very good lie he has 186 yards or so to the hole and he's taken a five irony I'm sure he feels
the ball is going to fly a little bit it's going against the wind but it's downhill and it's very firm in front of the green long par 4 448 yards I'm sure he wants to land this ball 5 or 10 yards short and let it run on he didn't do it that way though and there it goes I watch out that Waters back there if you get out of the way skating Pond is not far behind that that green left side of your screen there whatever takes a bounce on that path there it's gone Nick Faldo number one for three which
would put him in a tie or a birdie same thing next only played in the U.S open once before in 1984 and he finished 55th however he has played on American Golf Course is a good deal now let's visit Paul azinger the man who shot 76-5 over par yesterday is five under on today's round as he plays the 11th hole wow not out of it by any means a lot of strange things have happened in an open if a man can get in and put a score up say like if Paul gets a couple of more birdies it gets to five under that
will get everybody's attention there behind him 500 would be 279 he was nine behind the leader when the day began the greatest comeback in U.S open history of course is Arnold Palmer who was seven strokes behind in 1960. so it would be the greatest but it's not out of sight you know when you do something like that that's a good putt there at 11. when you do something like that you need some help from the people in front of you too they've got to come back your way if the leaders get off the sta
rts like they did yesterday uh with a lot of birdies made by the leaders that will eliminate most of the guys back in the field just as no matter what a good round Peter Jacobson shot he just couldn't shoot low enough to get back in it feldom strange has tapped in for his bar and fouled over his three greens redone rebuilt and this is one of them one four and Seventeen you'll be hearing us talk a little bit more about that the day goes on done by Rhys Jones of the famous golf architecture family
now my eyes remember he put his shot over the green that road is part of the golf course and the players are not allowed allowed a drop there not a bad shot anything could have happened to that ball and Larry's got a pretty good putt for a par he bounced that right into the uh little knob right in front of him he had it looked like from the way the ball reacted that's pretty Dave I think that's all he could do yeah he didn't have anything to try to lift the ball over that bank he had to play it
into the bank either with that club or a putter Nick Faldo has birdied the second hole the last two days bar three 185 yards uphill I believe he has a four iron little into the breeze it's up 30 today it's the exact opposite hole that it was yesterday if you remember the players were having trouble holding the ball on the green among the leaders and it's probably changed two clubs here D.A the problem on the third as you say the way they play bunker shots all of these guys it got any room they'
re all good there's another there is another I mean that's a great shot yeah I mean anyone who plays golf knows how tough that shot is okay another leader that's this could be a three iron depending on how Curtis wants to play this shot you don't want to go over this screen though and I think maybe uh he's well he's a little undecided now he's a little bothered by something in the crowd a little more wind kicking up than when Faldo played [Music] a couple of these groups the man hitting second j
ust hasn't been able to believe what happened to the man who hit first gets the same result third green Larry Mize needing this for the par to remain at five under two shots behind the leader Curtis Strange we have a group of rock steady players here you can knock a lot more shots close to the hole came up a little short good shot [Applause] and this while we're away was Nick Faldo playing his second shot they both were short of the greens he's got the more difficult shot I would think foreign [
Applause] now here's a bit of tape with Scott Simpson in trouble on the third Jerry Pate has a report Scott drove his tee shot in the left rough and as she could see when he played his second shot he was in the tall fescues he had to wedge out with a sand wedge and now he's playing his third shot to the green he still has 150 some odd yards left he was in plenty of trouble he could only wedge it out about 40 yards and you can see that shot is going right towards the flag not a not a bad recovery
shot but it just spun off to the right he'll have that long putt for a possible par so Scott Simpson May well drop one there Curtis Strange needs this for a farm so a bogey for the leader we now have a three-way tie strain Scott Simpson and Faldo but Simpson will have to make that putt to stay in that time so we have no clear leader in the U.S open a three-way tie and that brings back memories both U.S opens played here in the past ended in three-way ties and three-man playoffs there it is Larr
y Mize now only one behind and so is Bob Gilder although he lost a stroke the awive ring lost one is still only two back Lenny Watkins has joined The Fray he's one under for the day and 300 for the championship so he's only three back gilder's birdie attempt this putt is extremely fast coming down the hill from about 20 feet it's got plenty of speed better slow down now oh plenty of speed all right he's he's an aggressive putter I'll tell you Jim aggressive player Jerry Faldo made his par the se
cond hole so he is in that tie is strange there it was baldos Park age 30. father of a little girl's wife is with him but not the rest of the family his mom and dad are babysitting back home on Father's Day Simpson needs this for a park I think if he can hold his putt this is going to be one of the key putts to this round he'll be off to a good start with three pars on the first three holes if he can make this one and regain a little bit composure just turned off to the left so Simpson drops out
of the tie for the lead he's one behind it's now strange infaldo and here is wyvern who is two behind didn't like it the wedge from 123 yards it's pin high he pulled it to the left side it's not a good shot for D.A but he's got to put it to birdie around here Larry Mize hit a forward off this tee to about the same position he's only a yard or two less to the hole about 120 yards pin on on this hole today is on the right side right behind the bunker and the green has been very firm all week it's
difficult to shoot right at this pin I think you can get closer if you stay just a little bit to the left and land a little short of the hole distance not the problem on this 338 yard Par Four I think this is a perfect pitching wedge distance for Larry Gilder made his bar at the Third he remains one behind not so much distance the problem it's judgment because this is one of those holes that's sort of blind and it always throws you a little bit if you could see the green and where you needed to
land makes it a little bit easier he's far enough up to where he can see the green well it's not a bad shot as you can see the Green's firm now Paul is here again way up ahead on the 12th green another birdie attempt and for the par to remained five under for the day two over for the championship have a look at his front side scorecard he hit 30 and that ties him with a lot of people for the lowest front nine in the U.S open one bogey there six six birdies pretty fast finish there at six seven
eight nine he was once a get to that in a little while lazy we can be sure it's a sizable Gallery because he's from Holyoke Mass not too far from here what was invented in Holyoke Mass I bet you don't know you're right let's go bet somebody else what was invented there volleyball Tim if I might comment on Paul lazing or I watched him play all day yesterday and he had one of those rounds that reproves that golf is a game of inches he shot 76 and with a few inches here or there it could have been
68 or nine ah so he didn't play that that badly really well there was a lot of bad luck in that round Friday couple spot here is about 30 feet straight downhill breaking from his left to right he'd be very content just to roll this close hold it okay [Applause] [Music] now from the fifth back to the fourth Larry Mize looking over his birdie attempt Jim this is one of those greens that was was rebuilt and the texture is a little bit different it's it's more like 17. this green seems to be a littl
e harder than the other greens even the other new Greens on the golf course also is it your impression so far that the greens have dried out a lot since uh yesterday we had rain Friday night of course well they're certainly dry Jim they don't seem to be exceptionally hard Marco mirrors birdie putt on the fifth hole in the lower right of your screen my eyes in the upper left Amira could use one he's lost a shot he's three behind at the moment and and you might look back at that later in the day b
ut that's another role and he's dead center it looked like former U.S amateur champion one on a good course Canterbury this one to move into a tie for the lead [Music] that would be a game of inches all the way today for sure always is Jim just a little bit more or break when you need it [Applause] now Curtis Strange on the third hole Curtis is driven just through the Fairway into the light rough and coming downhill and pretty much downwind that'll that couple inches where the ball rolled into t
he rough is going to be a major factor in this shot he's 175 yards wind is kind of gusting now actually it's good flowing back into them saying Faldo played a little earlier and the wind was with him wind is right in Curtis's face now of course Curtis didn't judge the win properly on the second so he seemed to have some doubt younger golfers don't see many golf courses with views like that no you don't build them like this anymore Bob is that about where he was yesterday yes but he was in the Fa
irway yesterday that's what I thought yeah can't see the pin obviously no no he is shooting blind that's what makes this a real hard hole you've got to get right in the slot between now and the other side of the Fairway it's the same sort of Mound so you have to be in the slot there where the where you see the Fairway cut he's gone to one more Club made a change yep no watch it watch it very much oh they all got out of the way oh that's hot that's powerlessly close to the water stayed up however
so Curtis has misjudged the window on the second and on the third hole short on the second over on the third faldo's second shot thank you [Applause] they Beauty now on tape DIY brings birdie putt on the fourth hole well struck oh would you say perfectly struck that takes him to five under it's now strange and followed by one over Mai's wybrid Simpson and Gilder all of them within a stroke we'll return with four U.S open Action after this message and also a word from your local station [Music]
Bob rossbergs with Curtis Strange Rossi once Curtis's ball gets on the green it's going to be very fast and swing quite a bit from his right to his left this is a shot that's going to mean a lot to Curtis as to how his nerves are I think he thought he played a pretty good second shot and it didn't even come close to staying on the green decent lie yes he was able to pitch what a big shot that was whoops still dribbling away Bob is so right about a test to your nerves at that point Jim well now t
o the two nervous ones who will be carrying you for a while from here on in our colleagues Jack Whitaker and Hands Across The Sea Peter Rose thank you Jim well Hands Across The Sea um what do you think here in these opening hours the final round well I think it's been a very interesting start hasn't it Maize Faldo and Simpson have all kept their game going very well uh Faldo seems to be very much in control of himself these are very big occasions now and the players really don't have any privacy
at all we have cameras in locker rooms watching them have sandwiches and following them here and following them there I suppose for the last 20 years or so it's always been like that but I think there's an awful lot the players have to contend with now and they've got to learn to settle themselves quietly as Jack was saying the the preparation is all important and we're going to see an awful lot of touring and throwing today I mean this was a splendid second shot of Founders here if you could h
old it he's got to hold some putts now otherwise we're going to have we're going to have four or five people all tied at the end of the day and a big playoff tomorrow which wouldn't be uncommon here but these are the puts out the second shot's like the one he played he's got hole yeah a bit frightened of it wasn't he until they pushed it down the right hand side the greens and can be very Speedy but he's he's learned an awful lot over the last uh four or five years Felder remodeled his game trie
d to remodel his swing it's always been a beautiful home now Scott Simpson at the fourth green side bunker well he put his tee shot into the left rough and he didn't have a view to the green and he pulled a second shot with a wedge but this is a pretty easy bumper shot also for Scott of course he's a very very good bunker player good lie [Music] it's in I think these two players are coming a little bit unnerved they just don't look comfortable right now that's the short par for fourth hole and n
ow back to the third and Curtis Strange well he's putted beautifully all week hasn't he until the closing holes last night and he's missed one small putt today already this one would be a real bonus if you could get it in yeah foreign two holes in a row now or the leader when this round began and this of course is Father's day and a little earlier our Dave Mart talked to Curtis Strange about Curtis's father well he had a great influence uh you know with any little boy that's growing up and playi
ng uh starting at nine years old like I did and played every day when I was nine years old and on in the summer and go to work with him early in the morning come home at night taught me obviously the fundamentals of golf which stayed to me to this day but taught me more than that how to you know how to you know handle situations and things like that and and how to work uh how to appreciate what you've done and uh and just little things like that and unfortunately you know it it was if I was 14 w
hen he died so uh but when I was still when I was at Young he uh I feel like I still hold a lot of things you know down deep and remember a lot of things he told me when I was so young Curtis Strange speaking of his father Tom who was a golf professional as we look at Larry Mize that's a seven iron for 163 and it's going well left he's in the heavy rough to the left of the green seven on the same way that I just need earlier on but these greens the size they are if you walked up and put the ball
dead center of the green every time you wouldn't be all that far from the hole I think some players think I'm not too sure they know how far 25 feet is but I don't think you'd be much more than 20 25 feet from the hole every time this is Gilder for a birdie at four are putting for a par missed the green pitched it on the back part of the green and is going to clean this one up for bogey all right Jerry thank you as we go to the fifth Fairway and D.A wybrain that's a nine iron from 140 yards it'
s to the right of the pin but it should spin left it should come down that Hill coming some it's still moving interesting hole to fit where Harry Barton hit it out of bounds and still managed to stay even with Varden and Ray our friends as we met rather as we look at it dark leg and the green I expect is the whole character here since it Slants right to left [Music] no troubles on the left-hand side there leave room on the left and it also figured in the 1963 open Julius Boris nine iron second s
hot in here [Music] how about that three feet away he made the birdie that was in the playoffs Jackie cubit in the playoff also 40 feet away [Music] all of that happening at the fifth hole here's the fourth Scott Simpson [Music] a double bogey drop him further down at the fourth Fairway the leader Nick Faldo I'm 125 yards with a nine iron well again he's hitting these greens Fairways and greens Peter isn't he yes he's playing very well uh saying before he's learned an awful lot over the last two
or three years he's been very hard on himself for a long time but I threw that patch now this is on videotape heavy rough now we're live for the putt y so one by one the leaders have been falling back with the exception of Faldo Curtis Strange 105 yards from out of the roof that ball is not going to stop [Applause] this is a short Par Four and it's as you can see in the last few minutes giving some people some problems here it is [Music] yes it's a little sort of cute dog leg right to left and
uh see rebunkering's taking place a bit of reshaping and it looks simple enough only 338 yards but what you must do is get on The Fairway and get it on the green then you've got a chance you must keep it in play now up at the fifth why bring yes he joins Nick Faldo as co-leader thank you as Darren great friend Peter Jacobson shot a 64 here this morning look at it again current Western open champion now tied for the United States open in the final round now Larry Mize trying to put this hole behi
nd him foreign [Music] in all truth caused by a badly struck seven iron I mean you don't expect players of this caliber to Mr Green by 30 yards now Lanny Watkins at the eighth hole for a birdie and he's right in the middle of it Lanny 100 today 300 for the tournament and three shots off the lead I'm very capable of streaking the fourth green Curtis Strange [Music] oh that looks so good so long certainly did thank you he hasn't lost the stroke has he now we're in the fifth Fairway Scott Simpson w
ith a six iron from 171 yards playing downwind slightly downhill on the right side it didn't move down hopefully that's what he has left Gilder drove the ball in the rough got a good break yes they got a good break because it landed in the short rough which enabled him to get the ball to the screen that's one heck of a shot he just played there he had stayed a little bit shorter he would have been a long run if he had no chance all right Bob Gilder at 500 just one shot behind Faldo and we why br
ing at the moment we have Nick Faldo now for birdie [Music] another one missed he's uh he's had two or three opportunities from 15 20 feet and those are the putts so you know I really feel you've got the hole because you can play quite scrappily and still get cars felder's only getting fars right DIY bring on Father's Day here he is said he's not still feeling too perky it got weaker as the day went on yesterday and while we're waiting here let's move up to the other leader Nick Faldo is on the
15th stand down the hill please member of the British Empire is the fifth hole a lot of thick rough on the right hand side but and fairly thick down the left but there's a sort of Escape Route down the left hand side there fancy Faldo doing a lot of his driving with a with a metal three so the fairway wood [Applause] split the middle right there couldn't have it any better than that and that's the shot he'll have left now to the sixth another short Par Four DA's had a very good drive here Jack h
e hit uh hit the ball a little farther up the hill than most of the guys are playing which I think is a bit of a gamble sometimes because it can kick into the right rough but uh he's perfect he's right in the center of the Fairway he's only got 90 yards to the PIN I think that what he has to be careful is if he hits a club like a sand wedge and he doesn't get it up to the pin he can spin this ball back I think the shot that he would be easiest to play is one with a pitching wedge and landed a li
ttle bit short of the hole but he's taking a sandwich it's got to hit this wall firmly to get it to the PIN that better get up no never did yeah it I really thought that the pitching wedge was the club there sandwich just doesn't seem to be enough now Bob Gilder back at the fifth green for a birdie try and climb back a little bit be great to left breaker never got it started up the hill amazing about half the field has been in red figures on the front line this morning except our leaders it's a
little different air is more rarified at the top isn't it yes there's an awful lot of people now uh good players too within three Strokes 50 Curtis Strange [Applause] and another perfectly placed drive it would appear that is really a long one too it's about 30 yards past next all right Gilder safely in the name's four under plus two for the day so the situation we have co-leaders at the moment in this final round of the United States open DIY bringing Nick Faldo as Curtis Strange Bob Gilder and
Scott Simpson who were all up there in the beginning of dropped back a little bit and Lanny Watkins is making a move and Paul azinger who at 76 yesterday coming back very strongly here this afternoon now pay bring it six he's in very thick grass there and he's going to have to hit a good shot to get this close to the hole it's not bad it was a very difficult lie yeah that's for par for D.A at this 312 yard Par Four there's the T back there up in the corner it's not the sort of hole you want to
be struggling to get a power on the deck again you know with hindsight you all you have to do is get it on The Fairway get it in the middle of the green and you've got an uphill Putt and you might get a might get a birdie three if you miss the Fairway or leave it short of the green as d a did there uh you know it's it's not always the great shots that win championships it's the little mistakes the foolish errors that that cost you them almost there's the fifth Green in the foreground there they
almost have to go over a little bit of that Bob Gilder with a two iron right down the middle perfect position thank you now at the fifth Fairway here's Nick Faldo he's 150 yards going straight downwind I would think he would play an eight iron just a normal eight iron and landed a little to the right of the flag and let the Contour of the green take it down to the flag good shot he couldn't have played better these opening uh five holes he has to get the putter going doesn't it he certainly does
could have put himself in a very good position now D.A for par keep a share of the lead with Faldo up ahead at the sixth You Know Jack I'm not sure what happened on that second shot it I I don't know if it was a mental mistake or he didn't judge the wind but going uphill that far on an uphill lie I think he sandwich just wasn't enough still got a chance to save far that was a great putt look at the struggle Ed wasn't it now at five Curtis Strange a little nine iron from 120 yards better make ro
om at the top six green Larry Mize it was dropped down now to three under but patience is a key word here and you've just seen a little bit with Curtis he didn't let that bogey upset him too much and Lanny Watkins lurking let's take a look at Lanny at the ninth hole third shot on this par five now at the 15th T young Paul azinger started nine Strokes behind today he's only three shots off the lead now amazing yes if he'd got a birdie at the 14th the last hole Jack that would have put him four un
der and you know we saw Lyle finish uh 243 the other night we've seen uh several people get a couple of birdies in these last to four holes I say it would be sort of slight Poetic Justice he he did sort of lose the British Open Championship to Faldo and perhaps the roles may be reversed you never know long way to go all right d-a-y bring it to par 3-7 he's taking a four iron it's about 208 yards get back there he has started the ball toward the center of the green it's going to roll to the left
a little [Applause] bit now the fifth big swing isn't it he's been very shortly well not very short but he's been hasn't really run the ball at the hole today on these opening five holes just a little bit of nerves Maybe [Applause] Larry Mize at the seventh t he's taken the same Club looked like he had something in his eye there he's uh getting the towel from his caddy [Music] those strangest two over today Gilder is too over today so far and Larry is two over today now Lanny at nine for birdie
to go four under that would have been nice for him if that had gone in finish right behind the hole that might have set fire to him that birdie now Curtis for a birdie at the fifth to get this to get back to six under tied with the wybridging and Faldo at the top of the leaderboard well now foreign confidence playing with Curtis a bit of good he must have already marked him down for a three yeah it's wet on Curtis's forehead bar but it looked like mature birdie stays one shot off the lead now my
reminds at seven Larry switched to a three-ironment that shot that was a perfect switch Ed wasn't it got back further on the green than he would with the four [Applause] very difficult pin position there at seven today here's Simpson up at six this putt should break a little bit to his left and then straighten back up slightly uphills very makeable putt y [Music] just turned off at the end Scott has dropped three shots on this front nine so far foreign [Applause] ER at the 15th well the seven s
cores so far today under 70 Jack so I think we'll see a few more before the day's out I figure it's gonna play but five yards Floyd and Crenshaw 267s issue David issue 68. Stover Trey and yb69 Peter Jacobson of course that to spectacular round of 64 today seven threes in a row he had [Music] um splendid a chance for birdie again for Paul who started the day two over nine shots behind the leader now on videotape at the sixth hole co-leader Nick Faldo straight up the middle is it awesome that's wh
at he has left it's uphill very sharp Hill as a matter of fact only 312 yards [Music] very small green [Music] as following strange now walk up the Fairway past the fifth green and up the hill walk the sixth hole videotape here was Curtis Strange's tee shot at six so he's on the right side of the Fairway faldo's on the left here's why bring at seven for birdie and that would have been for the outright lead not a bad three Jack this hole has been one of the most difficult holes on the golf course
foreign to get it close to the hole here isn't it Well Jack when the pin is in the back of the green if you hit the ball and pull it just a little bit it runs hard off the left side of the green the green slopes to the left and and the bunkers of course in the rough or to the right you just don't have a lot of room back there Larry my is now trying to get a shot back very unusual to see Larry hit a shot like he did at number five and pull it that far to the left of the green with a seven iron I
think he just got got very quick with his swing I've watched him play here and I watched him warm up and he's got such a good Tempo if he's slow enough on his backswing he he just doesn't hit any wild shots well it is Sunday afternoon in the open isn't it yes [Applause] gets him within two shots of the lead foreign second shot for Faldo and you can see what the hill is like here at the sixth hole it's from 100 yards he's had it going right at the flag excuse me Peter he's had it going right at
the flag every hole yeah he has he put it well spun back though Bob a Zinger at 15 for birdie [Music] another one that brushes by back to the sixth Fairway and Curtis Strange Curtis is 85 yards and has a beautiful angle coming in if he hits the ball a little to the right of the flag it will come down to the left shooting right up the Swale of the green a bit strong Bob just a minute apron [Music] he's lost it a little to the right it's very very close to that bunker in it found the bunker Ed and
in the front part of it too yes near the face I think you'll get far out of that 385 yards the eight total D.A wybring with an iron not a bad play here just want to put it in the Fairway he appears to have it right down the center should have a nice medium iron maybe a seven iron to the green all right interesting hole the eighth Peter let's take a look at it yes coming out of the Big Trees which is such a feature of this course and the well bunkered you see on the right Larry Myers has found o
ne of those and then the little track through the woods and the Big Trees on the left hand side and again it looks simple enough if you keep the ball straight if you don't trouble waiting all the way down each side [Music] now at 15 Paul lazinger for par [Applause] till 500 on the day fortunes of D.A wybering at the eighth that's an eight iron from 144 yards looks like it got up a little bit in the Wind his wife 16th of par three Paul azinger if he could put in a birdie or two over these last ho
lds Jack he could set a very good Target if you're interested to come from behind record of course as Arnold Palmer seven strokes in 1960 Johnny Miller came from six behind in 73 nobody has ever come from nine Strokes behind Nick Faldo a moment ago for a birdie at the sixth another par perhaps for Nick Faldo now Steve paid who has just taken these middle holes this is on tape at the 10th the bird at the eighth seventh Eagle the ninth foreign twice this year is four under and two shots off the le
ad thank you Steve Pate second shot at the 11th 453 yards Par Four [Music] in the bunker perhaps some trouble there one or two of them will be getting a little bit edgy now Jack thinking that old thing greatness thrust upon them I mean it could be just they're able to keep things going and we're like Ace in here he's so far ahead of the field in in playing time playing distance you know a couple of holes left set the pace here's fouled out who struck the ball very well all right this little bewi
tching part three the seventh 201 yards and today is its need has been telling us a very difficult pin position and it's very difficult to get the T-shirt close to the hole 's playing a little longer than 201 today he's playing about two two five just over two five very little win right now it's almost breathless out here maybe coming out of the left just to shade [Music] and this ball is going quite a bit left [Music] so Nick Faldo missing there here's eisenger at 16 for the birdie foreign [App
lause] moves the four under six under for the day winner at Bay Hill this year but what a show to put on in front of a lot of your hometown fans Curtis Strange I would think this is a three iron I don't think Curtis wants to really try and jump on a four to get it back there just a nice smooth three landed on the front edge [Applause] now from there we go to Steve paid at 11 from the bunker [Applause] so he paid just two shots off the lead we are back this is Nick Faldo co-leader at the seventh
very tough little chip and he played it a little differently than I thought he would he pitched it up on top and made a miracle shot didn't have that kind of a lie I thought he could play that shot I thought he'd put it down into the Swale and let it run up but he played a Marvel shot Alice is on videotape up at the eighth hole D.A wybering for Parr oh yeah driven it perfectly into the middle of the Fairway and we'll drop out of the league now so Lanny Watkins on the back nine second shot at the
11th [Music] look at this all right my oh my almost got the lead with that now Lanny needs that back a double bogey at 10 has put him back to one under now Bob Gilder Bob with a seven iron from 151 uphill into the wind the pin is tucked right on the front very tightly tucked behind the bunker on the right side foreign Over the Hole almost went in on the Fly hey Bob Gilder four under final improve perhaps here everybody now chasing Nick Faldo on videotape at seven Curtis Strange [Applause] so Cu
rtis comes back you know d-a-ybrink D.A has hit this ball down the left side [Music] and in the left rough at the ninth hole and again our leaderboard has changed strange and Faldo now leading at six under wybring has dropped one shot behind azinger has climbed up within two with Fred Couples and Steve pate Mize and Simpson now three shots behind along with Gilder Zeller now through 17 has gotten it to two under and Lanny Watkins with that double bogey of course at 10. taken himself out practica
lly now Curtis Strange co-leader at the eighth t that was really a huge putty made there Jack in many ways he got it up and down at number six after knocking over the green and after missing that little putt at five he needed something to boost him because he hadn't made a footage yet but that one was really a big one from about 30 feet it was a it was a putt that you'd want to get down in two and it just rolled right in the middle of the hole he knew it was in about 10 feet from the hole it can
do wonders for your confidence and your attitude there's also a big hole for Faldo too getting down in two from that uh bad place off the side of the green so they're really going at it like a couple of heavyweights here well mid-heavy weights both of them six under but a lot of people within a couple of Strokes [Music] [Music] foreign this is Mark O'Meara I had such a splendid round yesterday he's four under Two Shots away [Applause] right down the middle of the Fairway be perfect Curtis in th
e Fairway two Bob yes he's in the right center of the Fairway uh Scott Simpson at the eighth green downhill left to right breaker didn't start it high enough it's going to turn off to the right now Lanny Watkins at 11 for birdie after that magnificent shot now he's minus two after the double bogey at the temp hole this is the ninth hole Larry my second shot he's using a seven iron and just trying to make sure that he clears the Fairway hazard he does nicely and he's in good position for his thir
d shot [Music] grass was very thick there and he had to make sure just that he would just clear that ditch that's why I didn't take any more Club 510 yards par five the ninth now we're back at the eighth in Gilder for a birdie also big left to right breaker he's got it oh just hit it through the break yeah too firm now it's a ninth D.A Library D.A has the same problem that Larry Mize does maybe a little little thicker lie he's really looking down at this ball the ball is sitting down and the gra
ss is very very heavy it's very deep there a little deeper than than most of the spots here in the rough in a situation like this a player would not gain very much even if he if he hit a longer iron to lay up closer and in fact he runs the risk of of hitting a bad shot and maybe pulling it way left into the left rough or even not getting across the Fairway hazard he's going to play short he just hit out with a sandwich he elected not to try to clear the ditch and I don't think he I think he woul
d have wanted to hit it a little farther than that this is 10. Bernie [Applause] Mark Romero [Applause] the eighth Fairway Nick Faldo Nick is 160 yards he laid well back on this hole I believe with an iron I did not see what he hit off the tee but he must have hit an iron as he's back there quite a ways I think he has a six iron but he's gonna have to get on it there's a little breeze in his face and he's shooting straight uphill again you do not want to go over this screen if anything you want
to leave it to the left of the hole today and a little short looking at airplanes or well uh he's looking up at the sky at the trees trying to uh see if there's a bit of Breeze there's Bob said certainly on the aerial shot he looked an awful long way back if he's hitting a six iron he's he's just in the in the little dip there he probably doesn't uh can't feel the wind so just undecided maybe between a five and a six foreign [Music] not far from the flag but just on the very edge of the green st
ruck the ball with a lot of assurance today except for the one tee shot at the seventh I'm videotape the a-y brings third shot at the far five nine here we go that was a nice bounce in wasn't it wasn't it played quite a bit of golf in Europe the last couple of years wyvern this is Curtis at eight he's 130 yards again going into the wind you can feel the wind now it is blowing just a shade harder I would think this is a real good eight and high now at the ninth hole Larry my's third shot Larry ha
s a wedge has just under 120 yards to the hole [Music] [Music] [Applause] Curtis Strange for a birdie at eight to take the lead all right [Applause] certainly not not dropping for the leaders the putts and yet everyone else down the field is playing so well McNulty's just come in with 68 fuzzy Zella 66 scoring very good today our DIY bring on videotape this putt was for a birdie to tie for the lead [Music] oh man foreign would you think somebody said not today D.A Mark O'Meara at the 11th oh thr
ough the green or Mark so the United States Open championship for this year up for grabs here 10 people can win it and with this we will take you over to our colleagues Dave Maher and Jim McKay all right Jack thank you very much you know in in the British Open of last year in the final round Nick Faldo parred every one of the 18 holes to win the championship today so far he has parred every one of the first eight holes and is tied for the lead Curtis Strange has gained one stroke on strange duri
ng that course strain started with a one-stroke lead over Nick there he is he's been working on his game and changing his swing a little bit you'll notice his waggle gets much more inside one of the hardest thing to do Under Pressure is to keep that change going on tape Larry Mize Two Shots Out of the lead Bob Gilder playing his second shot to the green he hit a big drive down the right side in the rough and got a good break he has a two iron take a big bounce left and this didn't get it up not
quite big enough Tall Grass killed it there Jerry but his whole High he's certainly in better shape than if he late if you had to lay up down below the green there ninth maybe the narrowest driving hole if you use a driver because you're going to be right in that area you've got to go over the right side there this is the other day where Greg Norman injured his wrist the right hand rough but a reachable par five as you see when in doubt you just lay up you can't reach it easy but a hole that Ste
ve paid is already Eagle today we've seen a lot of birdies on Larry buys just a second ago foreign of course if this hole is reachable then the other par 5 14 on the back nine that green is elevated above the Fairway there that you won't be able to reach 14 unless the wind changes around just joined us some people have leaped Into The Fray here today Paul easinger who shot a 76 yesterday five over is 5 under on today's round six under run today's round and four under for the championship as he p
lays the 17th hole and Steve Pate has also gotten into it four under for the day and Championship Curtis Strange that was a metal Fairway Club I Curtis is just putting it out to the left I don't think he has any intention of trying to reach the Green in two the way he played it yesterday as I recall well I hit an iron off the tee yesterday Jim but with the same intent same intent Bob do you think it may help Curtis you know the eighth hole was the first time that he got the honor you know he's b
een hidden behind Faldo all day and Faldo has been playing very well do you think that might help him a little I don't think it's going to hurt him I think if once you get the lead and can get out there and and put a little pressure on the other player you're in better shape that was also a fairway Club going a little right don't worry about the rough with that one yeah there it is I think it turned out perfect for him now Paul azinger has just bogeyed the 17th it's bad news for him he's three u
nder par then for the championship 500 for the day and here he is on the 18th tee the finishing Hall 438 yards as you see Plateau green second shot very difficult to hold it near the hole again today is here born in Holyoke Mass not far from here there he is right here I'll take it out of the way he's on the hard part down there don't be too bad okay and see exactly where it is a problem I guess as you say on that hard path well if he gets there he's okay it's just that uh if you want to be on t
he hard path giving a choice of the tall roof or whatever but this Marco marrow's got a heck of a play here now at the 11th oh my God oh my goodness what a shot absolutely terrific and he's here with his father Bob and uh that would be some Father's Day now back to the 1988 open and Nick Faldo 30 years old the reigning British Open champion the queen had him on her New Year's Day honors list in the share of 1988 he is now an MBA member of the British Empire Aldo has an iron in his hand he's goin
g to try and put it down underneath the hill try to favor the right hand side of the fairways it'll easier pitch if you're pitching from the right there's a New England picture if you ever saw one outcroppings of rocks he hit it and left I think it's going to catch the Fairway though it sure does Faldo playing along methodically even par on every hole so far now Gilder this is off the Green in two that's his third shot on the par five three shots behind he could sure use the birdie that it looks
like he's going to have a good pop out here DIY ring up on the 10th now he's just a shot out of the lead even par for the day him he has driven on the left rough and this is not the side of the hole to be approaching the green he doesn't have much to work with about 180 he's playing a seven iron on the 439 yard hole and a nice shot that is a very good shot from there you can hear it yell come down Ed yeah now way up ahead Paul azinger on 18 and he got a pretty good lie in the uh in the rough wi
th that tee shot they'll just give him a little room there yeah he gets back very much inside baby he don't know that all right lose a few teeth out there well I think his chance really went there if he could have parred 17. now this is our first good look at the pin placement here too when we come back to that shot again Dave the shot that all of them are going to be facing when they come up this final hole close to the front again today that's where it's been every day Jim in the easiest posit
ion that most the players have told me is in the left side of the green the most difficult is in the right side it's such a slope on this green you will never see the flag back in the back part of the green always be in the front half which of course brings that bunker into play and seen so many parts from the front bunker in this tournament very few from either side or over the screen but he still has a chance if he can birdie this hole Mark O'Meara made his part 11. [Music] deep there and very
little green hazinger having a great round of golf until 17 and 18. you have to tell by his expression there that he knows that that's it I mean you have to know he's looked at the leaderboard all day and how many chances are you going to have to win an open I thought this man would do very well here sevi byesteros he started the day two over he's now five over but he's on the Green well his brothers carrying for him and Peter Alice told me last night that he and his brother got in a little squ
abble out on the course yesterday really or a Friday yes you can see him he's going a mile a minute there yeah maybe they're still continuing their little uh discussion little tattate in Spanish I hope so what a great player he is though and he has not won yet the United States opened two British opens two masters championships Curtis in trouble Rossi Curtis played a very indifferent second shot he hit it in the right hand rough and he caught a terrible lie anything within 20 feet will be a grea
t shot from where he is walking away from it again it seems rather indecisive at times today Bob well this is a very difficult hole to pitch to if you're if you're in the rough O'Mara on the 12th tee Sean go get him Mark and that's just a perfect drive right down the center of the farewell it's Par Four 450 yard hole the big blind shot coming up now Curtis one [Applause] running a lot from that long grass he says why why about as good as you could do from them I've said there now Steve Peters on
ly two shots out of the lead four under for the day his third shot and 14 the par five see that's 13 not 14. he's on 13 which is a par for him now faldo's third shot on the par five ninth and he continues to play just the way it says on the card three on the green chance at a birdie but virtually assured of a par Nick Faldo of England my colleague Peter Ellis talked to him a little bit earlier easy or difficult is it for you to adjust when you come over a short sharp burst must make it must make
it very difficult to get acclimatized quickly it does because you you know the first week I I the biggest problem I've really been having is Chip with jet lag over the last couple of years you know I think when you're a little bit younger or or at certain time my life I could cope with it wherever I flew Japan or Australia whatever and that's been my my hardest thing is it's taken me a good takes me a good 10 days really before I actually start sleeping in in the morning well I've been living w
ith jet lag as you have a good 30 years now and it never gets any better we can tell Nick that azinger's third shot on the 18th yeah Jim yep oh they had that straight downhill and deep rough over there if you at home by any chance have never flown across time zones jet lag you know strange things that happens to your sleeping pattern just the way you feel in every way when you cross time zones you're allowed to wake up in the middle of the night exhausted and yet unable to sleep unable to read y
our eyes sting it's terrible you'd be an expert on jet lag yes unfortunately [Applause] Mrs saw in the background there made that putt for birdie she's looking at 18 green through the trees there now back to Curtis Strange prematurely gray as he has been since he was in his early 20s really twin brother Alan looks just the same they are very close in their looks and Bob is this Fringe uh did you get a chance to see Gonna bother his backswing a little it looks like it may it is going to bother hi
s backswing just a little David uh he's got a very difficult shot to play now his fourth shot on the par five it's always hard to get your speed correctly say he's taking a much bigger practice backswing than you normally would always tough to judge his speed when you do that you've always left himself sizable putt for the bar now not surprising you don't see too many putts when you're it's like when you have a tree behind you on a if you're trying to hit a shot you almost never really make good
solid contact because you're thinking behind you rather than ahead of you easing her for the long par attempt on the final hole that would bring him in at 300 for the championship and that is still around a five under a round of 66. for Paul eisinger Massachusetts born and they're letting him hear it you never know well that's right you never know there are just five people ahead of him on the leaderboard and they have a long way to play very nearly won the British Open last year remember and t
he man who beat him was Nick Faldo we will now see on the ninth hole for the birdie attempt to tied for the lead this could give him solo possession big left break here Jim and very fast short and left not quite that fast so his ninth consecutive par a lot of tentative Cuts as Peter Ellis pointed out and uh is that's what happens to you he's a good putter generally interesting to note that the leader of the halfway mark Friday night was seven under par and now the co-leaders are six under par D.
A wybring to tie for the lead the birdie attempt [Music] all of this will be reported around the world on television of course a number of countries taking this including Britain where there'll be great interest in Faldo and reported by these people reported from around the world we're back on the 12th hole with Fred Couples and Mark O'Meara just off the grain gym he three putted from about five feet at the last hole for a double bogey after pitching on the green with his third shot so he needs
something good to happen to gather his thoughts couples now only one under par for the championship two over on today's round five shots out of the lead off the putting service he lifts the flag stick in big putt on this hole coming up will be Mark O'Meara about 10 11 footer apparently for a birdie Mark has a little pot of about 10 feet as you said to him a little left to right breaker for a birdie and I'm standing here with his father Bob O'Mara who's a very interested spectator Bob is this a
Happy Father's Day it should happen to every father in the country well you've told me that this is not your first U.S open you've been to several this must really be a treat this is the best one obviously because Mark's playing well and I think that this is the greatest golf course I've ever seen so combination of the two makes it terrific how do you feel about this putt is this a good length for him I certainly hope it is because he's he buried this hole yesterday and and uh it's probably the
toughest hole on the course so hopefully he'll do it again well yesterday he had a slow start on the front nine and then came out strong on the back nine we seem to have the same pattern happening today yes and it makes me very nervous I wish he had started sooner but if he's going to do what he did yesterday it'll be just fine okay Dad try to settle the butterflies yep well Bob he's a very nice young man and we're all wishing him the very best Happy Father's Day thank you very much and same to
all the other fathers in the country thank you okay the Bob O'Meara watching his son Mark right here well if it's for a poker game we would have a pair of jacks to open with at least Jack Whitaker and Jack Nicholson here they are thank you very much Jim Well Jack we've turned in the back nine now the final day it's when it all begins what are your thoughts now well check I don't see anybody taking charge I think that Faldo has probably played the most solid golf tee to green Curtis has been a li
ttle unsettled but even though he's been unsettled he's still only uh well he was still leading the golf tournament so obviously he's in a great position of course Mark O'Meara is just starting to play around and uh he's up a couple of a couple of holes ahead of him and in an awfully good position we've seen some awfully good scores today Jack why is that do you think well you know I think something that you see an awful lot of good scores in the last round of a lot of golf tournaments and peopl
e don't realize that the golf tournament really gets a rest in the third round in other words you have 156 players the first round 156 players the second round the third play round they only had 65 players and we had a bit of rain yesterday and the course really had a day off so the course should be in perfect condition today and obviously a lot of fellas have taken advantage of it and it's uh you wonder whether the uh the leaders should be taking advantage of a little bit more than they are but
this is the last round of the US Open and the last nine holes and I think we've got an interesting uh interesting open on your hands we certainly do so let's get back to it and see what's going to happen Jim okay Jax there's the leaderboard again strange and fallow tie O'Meara and wybring close behind Gilder two behind DIY bring well on tape his second shot at the 11th hole will be coming your way just about now there it is on tape remember what a great part for this is too Jim it's a very dang
erous hole water in front 453 yards well where Arnold Palmer made a seven back in 1963 VA has just played a wonderful shot in there for a man not feeling very well he is playing some golf Mark O'Meara 13th season [Music] that's perfect right down the left side of the Fairway Par Four 433 yards the heart of this golf course is generally considered to be 10 11 12 and 13 that stretch of holes right in there and that's where the leaders are Larry Maya's second shot on the 11th a moment ago see the p
in just left of the bunker there this is a new PIN position they enlarge this grain a little bit this is this was not here in 1963 the last time they opened the plate Mize three shots out of the lead into the crowd just not Larry stay no probably a free drop will be involved involved there but that's not what Larry had in mind Nick Faldo now on the 10th the start of the most difficult string of holes on the golf course 10th hole 400 439 yard Par Four here is the front side for strange infaldo an
d you see Faldo hard every single one of the front knives just as he did in last year's British Open Curtis Strange one over for the front nine those two bogeys back to back on the second and third hole got him in trouble okay Rossi Aldo laid way back off this tee he's 190 yards and this hole is playing a little downwind uh I would think that he's somewhere between a five and six iron it's it's downhill downwind I think he's got a six iron and we'll try and hit it hard for the middle of the gree
n I don't think he wants to fool around with that left okay on this Father's Day we must not forget what moms will do for their little boys for example Nick faldo's mother when he was a little boy made him his first golf bag out of linen a linen golf bag well it's been worth it because he's become one of the best players in the world and a nice man right at the flag just off the putting surface maybe that'll be the one he'll make now he's been home to Greens and had been able to make one maybe f
rom just off he'll make it Larry Mize for a par at 11. he's got to hang in there he's three shots behind now I'll tell you we have seen a good deal of courage in the last couple of days here these guys are heroic Jim what they do Under Pressure I mean the pitch that Mark Romero played a little while ago the shot that he hit up on 12th there's so many players Lenny Watkins double Bogey's 10 comes right back Bernie's 11. Curtis Strange Curtis hit a big drive down the right hand side he's in a beau
tiful position to shoot to the left-hand flag and uh he's got a nine iron from 140 yards wind really kicking up now blowing harder than at any time during the day right down his back now he's going to change clubs together might be playing a little late might have gone to a nine all depends what you want to do with this shot if you really want to hit it hard it's a nine iron if you want to just play a nice little shot it's an eighth very smooth swing I would think that was an eight yeah well the
re's the birdie opportunity or go to Strange Bob what you said is the mark of a great player I feel that he has an option of the shots he wants to play as we go to O'Meara at 13. 161 yards pin in the right front of the green the seven iron come on come on and he's losing that a little to the right side not too bad Romero one shot behind here's the other man who's one shot behind this was a moment ago for birdie at the 11th hole about two inches to the right of the hole 14th hole to par five is i
n trouble not so much in troubled uh well let's see what happens now that is the par five you missed the green there today now watch this may come back toward the hole watch this it sounds on tape [Music] well then it's straightened up a little bit but it's hard to treat a couple of bit I'll tell you he's very pleased with that this former UCLA stand out when he played for Eddie Marin's Bruins 27 years old he's won two tournaments this year and more than three hundred thousand dollars this is no
t what you'd call an unknown well though you may not have heard him at home no relation no kin to our Jerry Pate who's out on the fairways today said to conquer a temper problem when he was a Collegiate player his temper used to get him in a lot of trouble and he seems to have handled that pretty well you do have to have a little fire no matter no matter what good opportunity gone yep that'll be for the park now Nick Faldo says when he was a kid he used to practice his sand shots out of the long
jump pit at the high school wherever you can find it right here now this is a birdie putt remember which at least momentarily would give him sole possession strange has a very makeable one coming up a little strong with it now as I said so often uh during the show that when it's against The Fringe and you're worrying about that backswing it's hard to get the proper speed on it apparently should there be a playoff it will not be today it will be at 18 holes tomorrow and we'll be here of course U
.S open almost the last stronghold of 18 hole playoffs of USGA championships well of all the tournaments we play it is the only one yep yeah the Masters is going to sudden death the British Open has not had the opportunity to use it yet but they have a modified version of five hole playoff and then sudden death that they should still be tied and total score for those five holes that's for the lead Soul possession of the lead just where he started the day if he makes this you've seen him make a l
ot of these putts at the memorial and here going at the memorial strange is back in front that's the first big smile we've seen since he left the First Tee after he bogey the second and third hole seemed a little uncertain steady himself and now grabbed this opportunity to go seven under par even for the day one stroke ahead of Faldo and Nick now has his par putt but over 13 there was more action when we were watching that mirrors third shot on the par Four Hole [Music] quick shot [Applause] Bal
do for par live [Music] all right okay so it's still one behind and has still part every hole on the golf course and the gallery continues to grow with that last group Dave Marr talked to Curtis Strange about another subject here's what he had to say Curtis when I first was around you for any length of time over at Princeville you among the players that used to come there like Crenshaw and Phil Hancock you were the one that seemed to be the hardest on yourself you now seem to be a lot happier wi
th Curtis strains than you were then oh good play helps that I'll tell you Dave I you know you're right Dave and I think a lot of people have seen that change and I've tried um and and I'm happy that people have noticed the the energy I put forth to it trying to change but uh I think it got me to where I am I think being hard on myself really helped me I think it it made me keep driving keep practicing keep putting keep doing everything I needed to do to get better and uh because I needed some i
mprovement I think right now if I keep going I can go a little higher but uh I got to keep that enthusiasm and I got to keep practicing and I got to keep hard on myself to keep doing it because we don't have a coach as in tennis we don't have a coach as in football or baseball to kick her in our butts to keep us going so you got to have something down deep you got to have a little fire and little little you know little whatever it is to keep you going and I think I got plenty of it Virginia gent
leman with fire underneath Curtis Strange now we're going to meet a man who shot 66 today Paul azinger with Jack Paul azinger you look like you don't know whether to laugh or cry well uh you know I'm obviously excited that I was able to make par in a last hole but I'm also a little disappointed that I was as close as I was and it doesn't look like I was able to get the job done we heard there were 10 spokes different between yesterday and today and we heard that yesterday the 76 wasn't that bad
was it well I got off to a bad start yesterday I missed clubbed I think on the first two holes and boging them both and made a bogey on seven the par three which is easy to do but what really hurt me was the eighth hole I hit a an eight iron about 12 feet behind the pin and and managed to four putt somehow and I kind of took the wins out of my sails I guess but I was 10 shots better uh the first nine holes today than I was yesterday and that's pretty hard to believe it was magnificent what were
you thinking coming down the stretch you think you had a real chance well I did you know the scores were backing up when I was out there and uh I felt like uh you know maybe if I got to five under that'd be a good number to post and and when I was coming off 15 T sevi who I was playing with today he said to me he says you get one more birdie I was 300 at the time he says one more birdie be good enough and I really didn't think so but uh you know I kind of ran the holes through my mind 10 through
13 are playing awfully difficult today and if anybody plays them under par they deserve to win the golf tournament and it may be the deciding uh Factor really those holes so gosh I just wanted to get to four and I made a great Birdie on 16 and unfortunately on 17 I put it in a spot where I really had a little to do a little chance to make uh a par there I was just over the green a extremely fast chip shot and I shifted about 40 feet by but again uh I didn't play 18 very well and I was very fort
unate to make part of it well thank you very much for a lot of Thrills here today Paul we're going to be hearing a lot from you I know well I hope so Jack maybe I've finally learned how to get my foot in the door not a boy Tim that was Mark o'meara's tee shot on the par 5 14th now he has finished that stretch of 10-13 that Paul eisinger was talking about now Nick Faldo and Curtis Strange facing this tough stretch of the 11th 12th and 13th holes strange leading by one now over this man Nick Faldo
Fowler from 185 yards 180 to clear the Trap probably a five iron a little downhill in the wind has swirled around it's behind me [Music] all right Nick has really played some beautiful shots today he's uh now Steve Payton as you can see drove well over the road on the 15th hole probably helped a little bit by the fact that he missed that short putted 14. it's beginning to heat up Curtis Strange those of you who might have just joined us this time of day I just come in from your golf gamers taki
ng Dad out for lunch or whatever it's Curtis Strange by one over British Open Champion Nick Faldo by two over young Marco Mira and D.A wybring it seems to be shaping up as you can see into that four-way battle at least at the moment but Paul aisinger who finished with a 66 certainly not out of it fight Laramie Myers can help himself a lot he's only played 11 holes and here's O'Meara on the 14th par five hole second shot 227 yards to the front of the green Mark went with his three wood but he did
n't hit it very well he ran it through the first bunker near the green and I think is in the rough but four or fives hold five holes can be forgiving in the sense of making your par but you're looking for a birdie there Spain's checking the wind again Curtis has changed clubs once now twice back to the original one I would think that he's got a six iron out he's 165 yards the wind is sort of swirling but he's downhill I don't think he had can hit a five unless he just plays a little cut it's the
way he's lined up Bobby looks lined up well to the left so it may be a cut shot in there well that's the way it looked like but he left it out to the left it's coming back to the middle of the green good shot he's looking like the strange of yesterday now proper Club selection there I look at the 11th hole Dave it's a wonderful hard par 4 it's a blind Drive the players drive over a hill there actually it's a combination of two holes if you ever come here to play you won't play this particular g
olf hole and if you're driving the rough you've got to try to lay it up short of the lake there unless you're very lucky and over to this smallish green that you see with two bunkers very dangerous home combination of a Par Four Hole and a par 3 hole a little landing area just the other side of the pond is normally the green for the Par Four Sandy Lyle on the final hole the Masters champion three over for the championship two over for today and that is Chance LED this Championship the only perso
n of course with a chance at the fabled professional Grand Slam which has never been achieved leading Money winner this year on tour of course Zach Nichols is with us of course I remember when you won the first two Jack and seized the lead in the British Open by one at the end of nine holes in the last day at the trailing by six when the day began that's as close as anybody's come well I had a good shot at it Jim and uh came down the end and of course Trevino chipped the ball in at 17 at Muirfie
ld and that was it that was it do you see any advantage for anybody here psychologically or otherwise from here on well I think that uh as I said a few minutes ago I think Curtis has had his problems and seems to be settling down now and while he had his problems he didn't lose the lead uh Nick has played off a good golf so it looks like the two it's the two of them are going to play head to head coming down the stretch but you can't Overlook uh obviously uh O'Meara and wybrink of course they're
both ahead of him and uh if they can get a score in and post a score you never know the only one who's won a major championship of that group is Faldo does it make any difference yeah foul is the only one that's won a major and of of the leaders here the ones that have a chance to win none of them have ever won a U.S open and uh so it's a it's a new ball game for all of them what's their problem what would Curtis's problem be to keep his mind on on the golf I mean how do you keep from watching
the scoreboard Jack you've been there many times you can get cluttered up thinking about all the players and all the possibilities well I think that's what Curtis did the front nine uh I think the front nine he was looking at scoreboards or himself and thinking the U.S open thinking of this thinking of his problem saying what why am I not making a put why am I not doing this why am I having a bad break you think of all those things and all of a sudden the back nine or you get there's a certain p
oint in that round if you have a chance to win that you regroup yourself and all of a sudden say hey look what I am I'm out here I'm playing I enjoy playing golf I'm going to have fun in them play and and I get and I get settled and I get organized and then all of a sudden boom you know you start doing it the right way and then you get on track and you forget it's a US Open you forget about your problems and you go about your business it looks like that's what he's doing right now and maybe it a
ll started when he made that long putt at seven it certainly didn't hurt getting the wheels back on this car here another birdie chance here not this time they are really doing a job on this golf course today by the way gentlemen there are 19 players who either have finished or out on the course under par today and the most subfar rounds in a fourth round was 17 and Pebble Beach in 1982. that's amazing because that Golf Course well that must have been early play because I think Jack Now you won
there in 82 that got harder as the day went on well I was one of the early players and I got out and got I think I made five straight birdies on the front nine there and got out ahead and had a chance to win the golf tournament until Tom chipped in 17 but it's uh I keep talking about all these guys chipping in that's right on you okay this is the par 5 14th Amira's third shot Mark's got a shot of about 35 or 40 yards out of very deep rough between two bunkers at the left front of the green [Musi
c] well the rough was very thick and he just did not carry the ball far enough a couple of birdies to catch up with Curtis at the moment faldo's birdie attempt to tie him for the lead on the 11th he needs something good to happen to him too he said as Bob rosberg just said and Peter Alice he said a lot of good shots now that's more what he was doing on the front side the putts just not the right speed and you have some days like that don't you that the speed jacket gets you well what Nick did th
is the last round at the British Open last year he was short and low almost every putt throughout the round if you recall yet nobody made a charge at him now if Nick continues to play the this way in as solidly as he's playing you know somebody's going to have to beat him and that's going to obviously have to be Curtis probably if that if that's going to happen and but he's playing he's not making he's not beating himself but he's not actually helping himself either though it's about as tough a
par putt as he's had I think most of them have been tappings what about putting out of the sun into the Shadow or putting from the shadow into the sun Jack does that what does that do to you well I think anytime you're putting putting with a change of light it's more difficult I think all of us would rather put in the Sun and you sometimes have a hard time lining up the blade or getting it lined up towards the hole and it does make it a little bit more difficult side door yeah side door but it's
uh he got it in Mark O'Mara's birdie attempt he was going for it that he'll have that for the par five so he should stay at five under two shots out of the lead I tell you Jim he really needed the birdie on this hole I think that could have been the key okay now Curtis Strange still has to make his bar here at the 11th he missed a very short putt at 17 yesterday and a short putt at two starting out today about this length the key for any one of these golfers any of the for the leading is obviou
sly patience Judy was talking about uh Martin needing a birdie well they all need birdies but they all got to be patient right about this point all right and of course strange and Faldo still have the difficult 12 and 13th to play but they have that birdie opportunity that O'Meara has missed still ahead of them D.A wyvern now remember he's only two shots out still he's 183 yards he's playing a four iron ideally a little cut shot would be best with the pin on the right he started it well to the l
eft of the pin yeah okay all right 16th green Steve Pates birdie putt played himself into it today and not with that one all right [Applause] now back on the 13th Fairway Larry mize's second shot coming up Mize at 200 now is five shots out of the lead hope is fading for him he's three over on today's round he's playing a five iron 180 yards [Music] he's headed well to the left I think Larry's been going across the line at the top of his swing a little more than he normally does and it's it's cau
sing some problems today not the time to develop a small flaw he does a little of that in his swing anyhow but usually makes a good enough move to get away with it now the 12th hole this is the blind second shot of hole 450 yards long this is a tough one Jack we'll have a look at it well the 12th hole is uh probably one of the most awkward holes in the golf course you drive the ball low on The Fairway and then have to play a blind second shot uh going right to left if you drive the ball on the r
ight side of the Fairway you can play it in fairly straight left side of the Fairway you're blocked by the trees it's a two level green and the with the Deep bunker on the right it's a long difficult hole and probably uh obviously one of the toughest on the course well let's see what the leaders can do with it he has killed it right down the middle of the Fairway kind of left Center but just perfect [Applause] have a look at his swing Dave all right one thing that Curtis does when you watch him
now good posture there is he'll move his body off the off the wall uh ball there he's got a little bit of a sway in his swing but that's when Curtis plays his best now you can see he's moved off of it he'll move back to it a little but his head is still behind the ball as he's driving through and under and up into a nice full finish but one thing if you looked at Curtis you'd say well he's got a sway in his swing when he does its way he doesn't play as well but he doesn't sway past the ball that
's only on the way back yes now Faldo that ball is up the right hand side and barely going into oh coming out of the road yeah just bounce off that higher grass I look down at Boston as we turn return to the United States Open golf championship moving into the closing stages now will it be a winner today what we're going to find out in the next hour to hour and a half it's Curtis Strange by one over Nick Faldo right now by two over Mark O'Meara and D.A wyvern moving in on Bunker Hill remember do
n't fire do you see the whites of their eyes and all that actually the big battle you know was fought on nearby breeds Hill but Bunker Hill got the publicity if you will now we've got a rolling in some sort with Curtis Rossi what's going on well somebody in the in the gallery to the left is harassing uh Curtis Curtis went over to the policeman pointed him out I did not hear what he said but there has been some harassment and the policeman's going to take care of this very quickly that does not h
appen around golf very often with the players or the gallery golf galleries usually the most best behaved in sport and that would appear to be the guy at least that's that is a person that the policeman has chosen to talk with well Curtis pointed him out and I'm sure that's the right fella no they say no but it is no it's not the one I know who it is you know who it is yeah it's a fella that's been following Curtis and uh and Ben and Ben and myself really yeah he's got a uh nickname and uh Kodia
k Charles is what they call him and the fella is uh you know I think I think we've we've had restraining orders on him in several places he's uh the fellow the fella is not it's not is not well yeah he just says what nasty things or he just he just doesn't he's just uh he's just not there he calls your house shows up at the offices shows up calls Curtis uh I'm afraid to I'm afraid the fellas yeah just not uh totally there oh boy life in the public Eye Has Its definite drawbacks kind of scary wel
l and this in the middle of the U.S open Marco Mira on the 15th 109 yards over that bunker with a wedge okay now Curtis trying to get his concentration back with a blind shot on 12. can't see the flag stick at all that's a beautiful golf shot in there about 18 or 20 feet to the right of the hole that was from 185 yards now Jack Nicklaus was right in saying that the fallow's ball caught a divot it's the divot that has been filled in but it is sitting down a little and it's certainly not the kind
of lie you'd want to have to play a shot like he has to play uh he doesn't have to get the ball up real quickly but there is a lot of rough just in front of the green on the left Edge where the pin is situated today they seem to have gotten rid of the Heckler do they yes he is gone 170 yards Jim okay blind shot to the green sounded came off cut it not bad just a little outside of Curtis is there Bob sounded as though he caught it solid now Curtis going to get a good read from Faldo here [Applaus
e] let's go up to 18 to see hail Irwin finishes twice former Champion putting for a par he's won over for the championship and even for today's round it he makes this putt get in yeah oh boy you did it round of 71 for hailer when the good reception from the crowd on the grandstand here that who have been in place for hours and hours look at that 371s and a 72. there's a fella who's brought his game back Hale's been not playing well for the last couple of years and he's now brought it back he pla
yed well at the Memorial tournament he's played well here another beautiful sight I I just forgot to uh DIY ring on the 14th T this is the par five the birdie opportunity for him he's two behind yeah go Jim he's had a very good drive down the left side of the Fairway can get very close to this green if not on okay this is part every hole but nobody's really except for Curtis Strange of course who's in the driving seat Larry Mize of the 14th he's one of the top players who's let things slip away
today Scott Simpson another one though now down to just two one and two under this is the 15th green and Marco Mira this part's just a little bit better than 15 feet actually putting back uphill at the hole very little break [Music] and that left for par mark Two Shots off the lead with the 16th 17th and 18th ahead now Steve pay four under for the day one of many people in red figures but those who have really fired were too far behind it's been very good scoring today though jack isn't there pl
enty of scores under 17. an interesting little punch shot marvelously interesting little fun shot [Applause] Nick Faldo I yet another birdie attempt to tie for the lead he's got to start holding one or two of these he's had a a reasonable pattern 70 of the hills he's played wasn't really had one in here [Music] that's about as close as he's come too and another par for Nick Faldo to remain one shot behind Curtis Grange 12 straight bars well we've been saying about this 12th hole being the most d
ifficult or one of the most difficult on the course Jack and Kurdish strangers had two threes two birdies and a par so and he's got a short putt here shortage putt here for another birdie if he were to get it what a way to play this hole three bird isn't a power if you can hold this pup so all right well we're waiting for Curtis that's see Curtis again now here's Mark O'Meara in for part 15. stay two shots behind and now Curtis which would give him a two-shot lead well he would have seen the way
that faldo's ball just fell away right to left when it got to the hole so uh I reckon he'll try and aim this nice and firmly just down the right side all right yeah [Applause] [Music] would you believe that he can't believe it but it's still above ground and that's a par four but two birdies and two pars at this 12th hole for Curtis Strange and if he wins this Championship I would suggest that this above any other hole was the one that did it for him Larry Myers at the 14th Fairway Jackie's got
a four wood and he's got 244 yards to the hole about 226 or 7 to the front of the green so he can get there he's on a downhill lie and that's the only thing that makes this shot difficult [Music] he's hit it to the right side defending on the bounce and it's in the right rough just short of the green but he should be in good position for a four foreign [Applause] couples now the leader Curtis Strange this whole playing downhill and into the wind today playing a little differently than it has in
the past this week and he has killed it down the right hand side [Applause] all right better stop right now he doesn't want it to go any farther than that watch it that is not too good he's gonna have a little trouble with his backswing Club is going to get caught in that Fringe when he takes it back here's a look at the 13th elevated tea the water on the right now Nick Faldo foreign [Applause] [Music] [Applause] that's a good shot coming right down the middle of the Fairway beautiful perfect p
osition Nick Faldo one shot behind Curtis Strange there's the second shot in and here it is from the air Jack well the um the 13th hole is a is one of the nicest holes in the golf course you tee off from a very elevated tee you're driving downhill to this Plateau that sort of breaks off and right where Curtis's ball stopped and the right is where it breaks off and it goes down to the lake the lake is not really a factor on the tee shot the green is open in the front uh the the slopes left to rig
ht and from the back to the front the green does and you want to keep the ball underneath the hole to have a good shot at birdie all right doc thank you this is Steve paid up at the 17th you get to five under [Music] um it's further away now than he was before it was a strange one wasn't it I think you're right jack too he is further away big cheer for Billy Mayfair who just finished up the amateur Champion he finished with four round total of four over that's 288 though that's uh four rounds eq
uivalent to 72 each time so he must be very pleased with that in fact there he was just tapping in at the 18th he'd fall over in fact this was for a birdie so he finished [Applause] the average less than 72 and that's very good golf indeed from this young amateur defender's amateur title at Hot Springs Virginia in August September [Applause] D.A Library foreign Two Shots off the lead [Music] [Music] D.A and Larry have been notified by the USGA that they are a little behind in their times and th
ey have played this second and third shots very very quickly to try to catch up all right Ed Steve Pate made us par at the 17th all right let's go down to uh Judy Ranka well Bob Amira on Father's Day we've decided to even put you on camera I appreciate it we could certainly use the birdie here at 16 we don't want to run our holes right Judy I gotta tell you I'm getting nervous it's the first time in a while last time I got nervous like this I think is when he won the U.S amateur and uh this time
I'm getting nervous I've been very calm while he's been on the tour for the last couple of years but this is a big event and it's exciting and I guess I'm just nervous like any father would be on this kind of an occasion very good chance here at 16. so let's see if we can get one in the hole I hope so all right Judy thank you Mr Romero and Son mark [Music] I should put him at six under [Music] here oh my God he's had some chances that have slipped by today no doubt [Applause] thank you all righ
t Mark remains at five under and on videotape Nick Fowler with 13. [Music] Jackie ballooned that ball up into the air it got very high wind just knocked it right down way short of the green Curtis does not have as tough a shot as I thought after looking at it he can take the club back the same as he would any other time he's 150 yards in the hole into the wind slightly downhill I would think a little seven there just a nice smooth seven [Music] lovely shot splendid far birdie birdie the first th
ree rounds and uh we were discussing earlier a birdie would be devoutly wished now oh and uh bunker now back at 13. Faldo yeah Crunch shot here Jack chip in the putt needs to be down in two one one would help another par huh now we're live with Curtis Strange at the 13th after it splendid Pro Shot yeah I think if Curtis holds this if he gets this in the whole barring great accidents he should win the championship [Music] he's giving the others a chance okay [Applause] now omara momira at the 17t
h that was from almost 140 yards with a nine iron he was very close to the lip what a good shot short of the green he just could not take a club that would allow him to get it over the lip but that was a really good play he has a chance to make a par from there that's 17 here is Mark O'Meara it's third shot it's got to get down in the pitch in the putt from here Jack to really do anything and that's a beautiful shot what a beautiful shot lovely shot that Judy now Nick Faldo at the 14th t part fi
ve beautiful drive right down the right hand side of the Fairway rolling well down into the Swale very reachable from there here is Steve Pate having a remarkable day at the home hole from the bunker on videotape [Applause] playing partner Clarence Rose and look at this oh what a lovely show [Applause] all right oh Steve Pate 67 today final late minute charge [Applause] now the leaderboard at the moment as we are getting down to the nitty-gritty Curtis Strange One Shot over Nick Faldo two from o
'mura and wybring Stephen Pete just finished three shots behind the leader at the moment and there azinger with a marvelous round today Lanny Watkins who started something and then fell back under Bill Mayfair the only one to make the cut DIY bring now for a birdie at the 15th hit a great eight iron to get here very difficult pin placement just over the bunker [Music] D.A has had many opportunities on this back nine quite a few putts of that length and just hasn't been able to get them to drop t
hank you [Applause] a remains five under par [Applause] the leaders are over at 14 and Bob you said they both can reach it yes both of them have driven beautifully down the Fairway Curtis Strange is 230 yards to the flag Nick Fowler 220. here is the hole snaking its way uphill to the green [Music] and reachable today in two by our two leaders strange and Faldo heard of strangers had already some singular success here at this hole this was his third shot on Thursday in the opening round on this p
ar five hole and make it better than that now we're live that indeed started him off he was even far up to that point and that was the springboard to get him where he is right now pretty good win behind the players I believe this is a three iron from Curtis he wants to get it up in the air beautiful shot right on the front of the green just short here it comes back that's where the triplex mowing of the fairways doesn't help oh look at it's still moving huh going to be all the way at the bottom
I think that's totally unfair in the game of golf taking shave the front of a green so it does that so a moment ago he was up on the putting surface and he's played a beautiful shot and shaved the front there to let it do that I think it's wrong it's a pretty stiff penalty huh here's Nick Faldo he's got a perfect angle coming a little more from the right hand side of the Fairway than Curtis did and maybe a little easier to get to this flag which is on the left 17 yards deep all right we can repo
rt O'Meara part the 17th to remain at 5 under as we watch Faldo that Ball's to the right way to the right Into the Bunker the shot he'll have he's doing his best to get another part Jack yes he's had a bit of a frustrating year father he's been second three times on the European tour at the 16th D.A wybring yeah 181 yards where's the crowd react pickles through now at 18 Mark O'Meara Jack this ball was down the right side and just jumped into the right rough all right in the right rough at 18 fo
r Mark O'Meara that's his shot there and here is Curtis Strange's second shot again let's watch it foreign I think Jack's got a very valid point here because he struck that ball very well it gets just about a foot on the green doesn't it and then and it goes back what 20 or 30 yards Jack something like that looks like it went back at least that far yeah and that could be a big turning point for him I mean he may chip up Mr felders in the bunker of course but uh it could uh change the face of thi
s Championship you look at it in all fairness uh who played the better shot yeah and I think that Curtis played the best shot he knocked it on the green Nick has knocked it in the bunker Nick has a much easier shot than Curtis yeah all right we have Frank Anakin the senior executive director of the USGA here you've heard that comment Frank about the condition there any response well it wasn't shaved deliberately it's just cut at Fairway height that's the way the uh that's the way the land is her
e it's very very steep you'd have to create an artificial condition actually to hold the ball up there you have to let it grow to short rough or Let It Grow to uh two or three times the Fairway height to cut it that's the I think that's the way this hole is set up uh Curtis knew he had to carry it up to the green to keep it there all right so there Jack I still don't agree with it no he's uh you're quite right he's got he's come back a long way and of course he can't really see the green he can
see all the flag most of the flag this is going to call for a very good pitch in the putt y will it roll back again now maybe he'll get a little bit back [Applause] yes he's played some good pitches into this hole 12th and the 14th have been uh have been quite kind to Curtis she holds the record at Saint Andrews in Scotland with the an incredible 62 that he scored at last year's Dunhill cup which will be on again in October here we are at the back 16 D.A wyvern D.A in the short rough has all the
green to work with just gonna have to judge the speed with which the ball will come out of that grass [Music] followed 14. another birdie putt Peter well yes but he he got a little bit too much sand there it was on the upslope maybe but he won't be over overly pleased with that all right one of the fine rounds here today of course turned in by Young Steve pate and here is uh Dave Marr Stephen that's just great play and it's been quite a year for you and if you'd have made that shot out of the b
ugger the last hole who knows what may have happened it would have been nice to post a number one or two West but uh played real well today I'm I'm happy with the way I played uh you know could have been a little better missing short puts but I made a couple bombs so I guess I can't be real disappointed well what happened on 17 you hit a marvelous shot you played in there and you had a hard putt I know down the hill but it just got away from you real quick there in 14 also yeah well 14 I thought
I hit a decent putt I just it just didn't break 17 uh it was real fast I just watched Clarence Rose put it about 10 feet by from above the hole my I had a couple Spike marks in front of me and just never really had a good attitude and made a pitiful stroke and never had a chance well that's still good playing and Happy Father's Day to you I know Nicole can't say it she's brand new but good luck to you that's the year thank you all right back here at the 14th Nick Faldo 13 straight bars this is
a par five of course the 14th and uh yeah just trying to gather his thoughts here because he's had 13 powers to the other players Curtis Strange has had two or three birdies two or three bogeys but Founders kept plodding away he hasn't held a putt he's had probably five or five putts this length now many of the most of them for birdies and he hasn't got one or hasn't had one in this is the easiest one he's had though Peter straight up at it jack isn't it yeah he's got straight up and breaks a li
ttle right to left if he's going to make one this is the one he better make foreign [Music] Mark O'Meara at 18. Mark has 163 yards to the hole he does not have a good lie he's taken a seven iron out I tell you it's kind of hard to get your perspective on this whole the entire green and the flag are covered in Shadows he saw this lie in the rough when he walked up here and he just shook his head well if he plars out he'll post the highest score or the lowest score well they put the seven iron bac
k and took an eight iron out okay [Music] we went back to the seminar he has a lie where it's going to be very difficult to keep his ball in the air long enough to carry the front bunker he'd be better off putting the ball in the bunker though Judy than leaving it short I think [Music] and that jumped out of the bunker and into the rough I think yes it's just in the little tongue between the the tube and that's left him a very awkward shot because the ball seemed to dive run right into the thick
clumpy grass where that just short of the rake you can see it there I think it's about a yard up from the edge of the sand but he still has a better shot there than if you pitch it out short of the bunker oh yeah yeah certainly a better shot if you'd been in the sand though Jack oh yeah absolutely yeah so Mark O'bert at five under at the 18th and here is Diego y ring at five under at the 17th t IP that was with a three wood and it's it's on the left side [Music] and in the rough [Music] leaderb
oard Steve paid in at four under why bring O'Meara Faldo and strange still on the course this was Curtis's attempt for birdie at 14 on videotape well he's keeping uh Faldo in the hunt isn't he Faldo TAPS in yes this Hull hasn't been as kind to him as the 12th or the 14th you remember that one day he had a poor tee shot down the left-hand side and did very well to escape with a five I wonder if that goes through his mind now you want to block it out anyway mine that ball is just short of the road
in the in the short rough it may be in the ground under repair down there I'm not close enough to see but there is ground under repair just short of that road where he will be able to drop back in the Fairway it's 434 yards from an elevated tee there's the road Curtis is right there on the right side near the road another small green [Music] Nick Faldo who's bringing new meaning to the word par he's hit the ball very straight today I must say but his putting hasn't been too positive he's only m
issed two greens today missed the second green and the seventh green both part threes and he did miss those too but he as Jack said he's played very very well [Music] that one's right down the middle I believe that was a fairway Club because he's well short of the road holds playing downwind today Bob that road is is playing as an obstruction and not ground under repair and the white lines there really and so you don't go to your nearest relief but they keep taking behind the obstruction in play
and that's where they have it defined for the week I see there's a shot into 15 that'll face them and here is at 18 Mark O'Meara this is on videotaped [Music] Well Jack as you said he would have been better off in the bunker he walked by me and was hoping the ball was in the bunker [Music] uh D.A wybring 17th foreign bunker so Mark O'Meara at five under as is why bring at the moment but Mark facing us rather Dawning Puck to keep there five under on the home hole wife and father looking on yeah
[Music] all right that left for bogey that's helped Faldo a bit too and why bring that must get down to two from this bunker he's got a good lie Peter it's just the pressure of the situation now that makes it difficult [Music] it certainly does Ed [Music] I'm trying to be a little too fancy very quick down the green once the ball gets on the uh onto the green trying to be too fancy a little edgy so while Miro slipping away and why bring perhaps going to lose one it leaves this man as the closest
pursuer to Curtis Strange discussing the ruling I guess that you were talking about Jack Nicklaus and I hit the ball there on the uh the second round and the my nearest relief was to the right in the rough but at least because they determined an obstruction they can bring the ball back in the Fairway to the nearest Point all right he will definitely get to drop the ball in the Fairway then if that is the case what's he getting relief from there well well the road and the rough around it has bee
n marked off as an obstruction of temporary obstruction as Jack explained and he will get relief and I believe into the Fairway Nick Fowler was 165 yards from the hole after laying back with that Fairway Club but he's got a beautiful angle to come in the pin is cut to the right today 11 yards back on the Green probably has 160 to not fool around with that bunker looks a bit like the British Open there with the gallery behind now don't see that too often at our tournaments here in this country fi
nal group of the day we'll Target as Bob says he can just float it into the flag must be good right at it where am I Ali's been doing it all afternoon hasn't he now would be a good time to Hole a puddle too d-a-y bring it 17. [Applause] [Music] he has that left for bogey and here at 18 was Mark O'Meara for bogey [Music] yeah so Mark finishes at four under tied with Stephen pate now there are three left vibring Faldo and strange [Applause] at the 17th [Music] it looks certainly a battle between s
trange and Faldo and again that 17th hole may play a big big part I just grabbed this and see that this Curtis is 140 yards I think he's going to take an eight iron the wind is coming behind and from the right has he had a good drop oh yes yes beautiful drive Peter he's got a great lie it's a real dry there and if he can really nip the ball off this type of Life coming in though over that bunker not a lot of room there Bob no there isn't too much room over that bunker but anything hooking I thin
k you know I think if anything he doesn't want to lose it to the right that's for sure also a little bit more pressure with faldo's ball nestling up there within uh eight or ten feet it looks at the hole I think this green is held better than most of the greens all week so I think he's got plenty of room to stop it [Music] this is right at it also quiet enough while we were away Curtis for birdie at 15 to go eight under [Music] so Faldo is still very much alive [Music] well we keep saying it Jac
k but he hasn't held a putt yet and this isn't very far away now he keeps having shorter ones every hole yeah he's playing very well [Music] thank you yes that long last he gets one in and a good moment to do it oh it's real match play stuff over these final few holes Jack Curtis with a nasty putt that you wouldn't give in a match played on he's got the hole now to take stay level with Faldo and just three holes left to play a classic match play situation [Music] I'm going back to the Ryder Cup
Peter yeah that's right absolutely yeah [Applause] I don't think these two played each other in the Ryder Cup but uh I'm sure they both played their hearts out when they were there and we have [Music] Nick Faldo at the 16th oh he's lost it way right in the front bunker and I believe closure well we were just talking Jack Nicklaus and Peter Alice here that they had to hit the green here we felt that a little bit downwind a little bit left to right that they needed to hit the green here this is pr
obably uh of the shots to the Green in the last three holes this is the easiest one Nick has not not hit it where he wanted to obviously no the job for both players here is to is to finish with three pars if they happen to do better than that fine but they're not long holes they're tricky holes the 17s particularly but there's only a drive and a short iron the seven or eight iron down the last hole or six iron here seven iron six iron just needs a bit of clean straight hitting Chris knocked in t
he bunker yesterday to the right yeah that's great if that gets up it's good a little fire through the ground very very warm what a bad break that was just really took off didn't it hit the downslope just over the bunker and shot DIY bring a moment ago now D.A if four under coming down 18. all right good shot played very well what I bring today it's one over par but it's played very steadily now we're live at 18 Larry Mize Johnny's third shot there and he couldn't he just moved it a little ways
in the bunker that was his fourth shot so Larry started out with high hopes today at five under and we'll finish at level par if he makes this play but here it is between strange and Faldo now at the 16th the par 3 then the 17th and 18th par fours and we're at the 18th green now if wybrid can sink this he would post a five under Two Shots behind strange and Faldo at the moment [Music] foreign look s [Music] a little louder now that'll be a par for D.A he'll finish tie with O'Meara and paid at fo
ur under and now it's up to these two gentlemen Nick Faldo 16. he has a near impossible shot here the only way he could get this ball close would be to land it in The Fringe In The Deep Fringe these guys buried on sort of a down side down slope and the pin is only 12 feet on the green so if he lands it over the the long Fringe it's going to go on 15 20 feet by the hole please not where you want to be anytime but especially now he's had not had a bogey since the fourth hole yesterday 23 26 cars a
nd three birdies those fellas got awfully bad breaks on their shots here yeah this is hit and hope and sometimes they come off and sometimes the disaster strikes a little stab and hope for the best that's as good as he could do that ball is about 20 feet by the hole Curtis does not have a very good life he rolled into the uh he's in the short grass but he's going to have to pitch it with a very lofted Club he's got a lot of green probably 45 50 feet of green yeah we could have some very interest
ing moments here with the 17th looming ahead now paid O'Meara and wybring are finished at four under strange and Faldo at the moment 700. all right oh he didn't hit it at all that ball is going to be outside of Knicks I believe Nick will putt first but that was a very sort of weak shot but out of a terrible eye yeah well they're both giving Comfort to the other aren't they yeah they're setting yeah yep foreign fairness to them they haven't given much comfort all day they both have played very we
ll yeah definitely [Music] well he's hold longer putts than this and his time and so has Kurt is strange missed shorter ones mind you so it would be uh be pretty good if both of them hold asking a lot at this moment I suppose The Bookies would give you odds on two putts each didn't come on Curtis one time [Applause] all right at the 18th Scott Simpson hitting a five iron from 168 they're just trying to stop the bleeding at this point [Music] it's got three over par at this point for today 300 fo
r the tournament that's a good looking shot but it's a little bit long [Applause] foreign Scott Simpson defending champion now back to the 16th [Applause] oh what a timely put I think he learned an awful lot from watching Nick's putt you would have expected next cut to do a little bit more breaking than Curtis Washington employee he had a beautiful punch [Applause] that's the way he's been playing all year though when he's taking advantage of the situation yeah it was a 20 foot 20 25 footer wasn
't it I mean it was a terrific putt to hold look at that reaction wow now Faldo of course has a tricky little putt here uh he's got to give this his full attention [Applause] [Music] and Curtis Strange leads by one shot we'll be right back where I'm back here now and while we were gone the tee shots were hit by Faldo and strange at the 17th here they are in your tape stay there carried that bunker and it was 240 yards to carry that bunker from where he was the wind has sort of died a little bit
so he was able to carry it I found it was going to go around the bunker though with an iron he's been almost let her perfect striking the ball today hadn't he don't recall him missing a fairway and he's had it inside 10 or 12 feet 15 feet just a number of times he's been playing very very well also in the Fairway Curtis Strange is seven under Nick Faldo was six under they're on the 17th and take the drama from here Jim McKay thank you very much Jack there you see it it's mono Amano just these tw
o and they've been at it ever since the first hole if you haven't been with us all this long afternoon the day began with strange one shot ahead of Faldo Bob Gilder and the defending Champion Scott Simpson Gilder and Simpson invaded her in the afternoon at one point during the front nine Faldo took the lead in a tie with D.A wybering strangers behind later he caught up took the lead on the 15th hole beldo here [Music] that was from 145 yards it's coming back down the hill that is not a very good
break right there that ball is coming all the way back to the front edge of the green so he's going to be 45 50 feet from the hole Curtis is 117 yards to the flag hit a tremendous drive he told me earlier that he had not really decided how to play the 17th hole but he hit a good drive yesterday had trouble with it the first two days he's had a perfect drive today I would think he'd play a little nine iron here I wouldn't think he'd try and jump on a wedge historic hole on the golf course Franci
s we met in 1913 birdie did in the fourth round and again in the playoff win at the age of 20 he beat the two most famous golfers in the world large and raving well I'll tell you what's running through his mind right now is that he does not want to leave a short notice he want to have any chance of being long and that part of the green up there is very very small he's just it's not a shot that you really want to have with a One-Shot lead because it was just not much room to play to foreign [Appl
ause] yes Thomas well that shot is going to allow him to play the last hole the way he wants to play the last time [Applause] [Applause] yeah we're having a party which we don't like you to come to at about eight o'clock okay [Music] thank you they realized how small that green really is back there really is smaller than any other green on the golf course by far cupping areas are almost non-existent oh yeah unless I get hit by a car back there that's right on the road foreign but I won't know wh
at happened if I go you will be [Music] foreign [Music] things happening great sports events and everybody trying to follow the two men now Curtis strains the leader Nick valdo the stroke behind the 17th green tucked away in the corner just across the street from Francis House we said so often yesterday this is the rebuild green so it's a little bit different speed than the others and one thing Nick cannot afford to do now is to three foot the screen [Applause] that's Channing here is up on 18.
they can't keep chanting uh to the basketball game I think they were saying beat La maybe Detroit that's up when 18 but you say it's not about nothing about the number seven I don't believe okay you would know one well they came out to have a good time and having that but another important works though to be done later on these players will look back at this as a good time right now it's excruciating it's the most fun times of their life that's right I can tell you that Jack that's right win or
lose win or lose that's right you never forget these afternoons [Music] I think so I think that he's probably the most difficult shot he's had to play today and he's played it as well if not better than any shot he's played today the chances of not you know if you missed the shot from there don't end up over the green or short of the green right or left you just really end up with an almost impossible situation that's just a great great shot Dave you were saying while we're away at the commercia
ls the kind of shot that makes Champions but it's it's certainly the kind of shot the Champions make that's right he played a shot back into such a small area that had enough nerve and skill that's of all the years of practice work I mean it all comes together finally they've been on Curtis because he has not won a major championship and say all he's done is win money and I think winning Jack's tournament and Memorial this year but he told me the three iron he played against Greg Norman at 18 in
the Houston tournament where he already did tough last hole there got him started and of course playing Greg who really considered maybe the best player in the world you can argue many of the American players feel this man is the best player in the world and alfaldo is put in the hole for his car he has the car he's six under Curtis can go eight under with this butt plus he would give him a two-stroke lead and that they can play 18 as he wants to play it that's where he cut it yesterday fast co
ming down there to look out oh boy yesterday he said he tried to force the Putt in the hole remember Jack when he said that and that's what caused him to three putt down he doesn't try to force that no that's just a slope yeah I know that's a very slow so there valdo cannot help himself and his opponent misses his butthole they're tying in with one hole [Music] [Music] if they're still that way at the end of 18. we'll be back tomorrow there will not be a playoff tonight or any other version it'l
l be an 18-hole playoff tomorrow if somebody doesn't win it or lose it for the 18th hole well you may remember that you that you three putted I still don't know at this point Hal is going to turn out as you see the 18th Fairway just left of the pretense you see in the middle there between 1 and 18. so the 17th has made history again in 1913 it was we met birdie in the fourth round of the playoffs 1963 Julian Quarles and birdied into the fourth round didn't realize that the timer didn't think at
the time to move him into a playoffs but it did went on to win that and now bogey by the leader has put it into a tie with one hole to play and if the stance made anything it's so important to drive into Fairway here at 18 and the present British Open Champion Nick Faldo is leading the statistics there you see 14 of 14 so far and he was number one starting the day so certainly he's done the best driving of anyone in the tournament Curtis on the other hand is 34th in driving and they're getting a
ny vantage point they can find remember at Marion when the guy fell out of a tree on Trevino well he was on not all of him but while he was about to putt on 18. some of them have gotten on the roof of the clubhouse they were everywhere all right final hole for 138 yards the wind has turned around a little again and it's coming back in the face of the players this hole is going to play a little longer than it has been today just cut it right down the middle of the Fairway beautiful shot yeah wow
way better [Music] by some chance you just joined us we're on the final hole of the U.S open in the fourth round Curtis Strange right here it's tied with Nick Faldo of England with one hole to play battle man to man all afternoon Jack Nicklaus didn't you always feel that driving into the sun was very difficult I think driving into the sun on the last hole in the U.S open is I suppose difficult thing I could think of doing right now tied for the lead died all right he's going to make a tremendous
difference right here this is what was happening while you were we were away walking down through the crowd our tee shots to the second shot shots to the 18th grade Curtis Strange there in the red shirt Marshall's trying to make the way for him some would reminiscent of the British Open when they pop out of that crowd like a champagne car here's Nick Faldo though right in the middle of the Fairway I suspect when he walks up to this 18th green he'll get the best reception any englishman's gotten
in Boston at least in 1776. now there was 190 yards into the breeze just slightly coming out of the left Sun still may be a problem for him Bob well the sun is very tough out here and your green is all in shade very tough to judge expect he's got properly a foreign is that right Bob well if he's got a four Jack I think he's going to have to step on it but I think that's what he has elevated green bunkers in front cross bunkers [Applause] it is just off the putting surface it doesn't look like a
birdie from there yeah that's one of the most unusual statistics of sport now I don't remember what that means it means that no one has ever had to Birdie the 18th hole to win and done it people have birdied 18 volt and won Curtis Strange 162 yards beautiful lie but in the rug regardless and yesterday 565 didn't get it back and put the front bunker I'm sure all it's running through his mind Bob at being in that roughness to throw it as high and as soft as possible and just get it over that fron
t bunker and let the green do the rest that would be great and he's got the kind of lie he can do that Jack oh in the bunker I don't know what I can't tell you whether it rolled back into the hole that it made or not I think it's just to the right of it Jim of course that's tough walking up there Jack you've had that experience a lot of times these people are running and and want to bump Curtis there you get your mind off what you got to do when that happens to you you totally lose your concentr
ation when you're getting this kind of a situation uh I know they'd like to control people but I don't believe they can right now they've run right by the ropes and everything now what do you think Jack he's got uh Lyle looks okay I don't know if Rossi is even going to be able to get up here and see it through all these people but it didn't look as though it was in its own uh park there I think I don't know Dave I can't tell but it's uh it's on the side of that face and if it's in the side of th
at face it's probably partially in and partially out of that pitch mark you can see it right there there now what about falzone shot coming down the hill there well I think everybody thinks that Nick has got an awfully easy shot but that is awfully quick coming down that hill and Nick's gonna have to work he's going to try to bacon he's going to still have to be very careful not to refund is there one you would rather have a lot you know how I play both cyclists ball is not in the pitch mark it'
s to the right of the Benchmark he has a beautiful lie actually out as easy as easier for me of course the situation makes it a little more difficult that's right and he got there yesterday in the same bunker and made a beautiful shot out of there and made his car at the boat in 16 and 17. glad to hear you're alive as well and got through the crowd anyway Russell yesterday whatever happens this is what it's all about I first heard that commented from Jack Nicklaus but until you've been a player
just can't understand the excitement going through those two players right there and all the things that run through your mind that you're trying to get out to concentrate on what you're trying to do you don't have any control over the other guy it's not like a sport where you can go in and tackling or blocking or something Bob says it's got a very easy Photoshop but right he's got all those conditions that he's got to control and that's the hardest thing is to control those conditions nine chan
ces out of ten I think Curtis should not just fall inside three feet all right now let's see who's away and yes I think maybe uh Faldo is away here no I don't believe so now Curtis is away all right well there he is there's been 20 foreign born winners of the US Open but only four were not living in the United States when they won and it was very hard in the 1900s Gary Player in the 65 and Tony Jackson 18 years ago to be the fifth blessing to duplicate what Tony did holding the both open champio
nships at the same time right amazing how quiet this many people can get that was so noisy just a second ago and how noisy they can get in a minute or so depending on what happens if you don't lies too what a beautiful shot oh very very hard player yeah wyvern said he's got a lot of respect Jack Nicholas that way Floyd when he gets going you can see it inside now this makes this shot so much harder because you can't expect Curtis is going to do anything but make a fire there but Nick really has
to be careful interesting there have been 17 so far scores today ties the record for the fourth round way Sarah but neither leaders before the week I talked to Curtis and I asked him what he thought would win he said 278 to 280. he makes a par here shoot to 278 and of course Nick makes a part two so go to work this putt to win the United States again you're standing there helpless nothing he can do that should make it cautiously aggressive [Music] [Applause] [Music] yep both good puts I think he
thought that putt was going to break a little bit more but he was he was notice how cautious he was with a stroke but he made sure he got the whole gave himself a chance to win the golf tournament ABC's coverage will be four to five thirty eastern time tomorrow afternoon assuming there's a playoffs make these two putts well it's not Sunday afternoon at the club and you're putting your leather down there to see both wives [Applause] [Music] quit [Music] in the third time [Applause] [Music] Sprin
gfield Virginia [Music] [Music]

The voices … oh those voices.. take me back to when I was 4 or 5 years old and being in the den with my parents while my dad watched golf and my mom read. These voices/announcers are forever priceless and so genuine and classic.

@pmcg1238

So amazing to watch! Thank you! And great job!

@stevenchampion8137

What great times. Balata balls, wooden drivers (and a few small headed metals), fantastic clothing, expecially some of those Aureus designs!

@sylvandude1

One of the first majors I ever watched..it’s fun to see them on the champions tour now

@johncassani6780

It’s something to hear Jack Nicklaus here. He missed the cut both times he played the Open at The Country Club. He was 48 at this point, having played majors as a pro since he was 22, and this was only the 7th cut he missed in a major as a pro.

@R_J_G

Golf had stalkers!
