Tiny House Giant Journey

hey guys jenna here welcome to my channel where  i take you on tours of tiny and unique homes and showcase stories of people living alternatively  in today's video we're going to meet a family of four living in a tiny custom overlander and  if you're wondering what an overlander is it's basically a tiny home that can go  absolutely anywhere so they can change their backyard every single day if they want  to and stay off grid for long periods of time this is one family's dream life could it be yo
urs  too if you like these kind of videos make sure that you subscribe and hit that notification  bell so that you know every single time i publish a new tour but right now let's meet this  family and take a tour of their custom overlander we are overland uncharted and  welcome to our new rig macho we had a beautiful piece of property in  east tennessee on 11 acres we had a farm we thought it was our forever home we thought  we were going to live there have our kids there grow old together but t
hat didn't happen  i heard this new thing over landing and i was like wow really you can do this  full time maybe we could really do this we've been on the road now for about a year  and a half we traveled for the first year in a van that we did build out but  the van didn't quite provide us with a few things the first was space when we  first started out the kids weren't quite this big they're growing fast the second is  payload we were kind of at our max with the van couldn't add anything to o
ur travels  and then the third was four-wheel drive curt actually had this vision like early on in  our van life experience that you know one day we're gonna build out a box truck once we sold the  van then we really were kind of homeless we found a airbnb to rent out the owner was incredible  to work with he had tools of all kinds he had the perfect workspace for us and we built this  thing in about collectively around two months the price of the truck ended up being  around 65 000 the box was
about 15 and the build was about 50. our whole idea was kind of like an earth rover  on a budget earth roamers you know they around that 500 000 on up mark so i think it was a good  compromise and balance for what we ended up with our oldest is eight our youngest is five i think  they were just really intrigued in the whole process you know they think daddy is amazing  superhero he can build anything and i love that they've got a role model to look up to it was  really cool and special seeing th
rough their eyes what manifested and transformed in front of us all right welcome to our tiny home on wheels  this is our ram 5500 and as you can see behind me we have done quite a few modifications to it first  off we did a super one wheel conversion this was a dually so in order to make this a single one wheel  we had to go with some really big tires for weight capacity these tires will hold 6 400 pounds it  is full-wheel drive and it holds 74 gallons of diesel cost is about 350 bucks to fill
this thing  up i think we're still around that 10 mpg mark around here on the front we got a bumper we got  some lights in the front we got some fog lights we got a bar light as we go up here  we got a front runner roof rack we got some action tracks boards on top extra  fuel we got a couple front runner boxes on top we got a big yakima cargo box that holds  our paddle boards have these nice cargo boxes and in this one we have an air compressor so i  got this air compressor to do the build and a
lso it will inflate these big tires convenient  plug here i can just plug this thing in we can air the tires up so these steps we got from  e-trailer they're foldable so we can fold these up we put them here in the storage box we really  like the doors and windows i think they're well worth the price these are arctic turn doors  and windows it's got a cool little system here so the wind doesn't slam the door shut it's  a dual door so you can just have this shut to allow a nice breeze in and thes
e just snap  together now what i really like about this and the reason that we ordered the box brand new box  is the deck that was high on our priority to have this deck and it really expands our living space  this box is called a pro scape box when we got it this door came down and actually came down  at an angle and then it had a ramp inside here that fold it down to the ground  so we did as we tighten these chains up did a little bit of modification to get it flat we  added some grass the awn
ing is a cvt awning and we have a screen room for it so if the mosquitoes are  bad we can enclose this in a screen and and still enjoy the outside all right round of the driver's  side more storage this is actually the kids storage so i don't mess with it it's it's their  storage box they put whatever they want they get tired of their toys they'll tell me and say hey  can we exchange some toys for some new ones so really excited about this so it's their own  space that something that they can ta
ke care of all right so let's move up to the  top so we got 1850 watts of solar another thing we got on top maybe you notice  we have a mini split we have a parsec antenna for a pep wave so it's a seven in one antenna so  you get two wifi's four sail antennas and a gps so now that you've seen the outside come  on in and let me show you on the inside let's start in the kitchen this is my domain  this is where i spend a lot of my time i'm the main cook in the family so a few things were  pretty es
sential for me to have in this build number one being some produce baskets it's a great  way to keep your produce protected out of your pantry or your fridge so the other thing that was  really important to me was a spice rack i love to cook i like to cook with fresh ingredients and  a lot of spice and flavor so i got all of those pretty much taken up plus more in the pantry our  countertop here is an acacia wood butcher block countertop i finished it and we put it on and it  turned out a little
bit better than i thought it would i wanted a river top epoxy port originally  for our countertop because we had one before in our previous rig but we didn't have time for it so  i settled on these instead that i found on amazon and they are great to help kind of break up the  seam this wood is kind of unique we call it our fancy wood this is one thing that i really  wanted to just kind of break things up from the normal plywood that we had to paint this  is our home and i wanted to feel like a
bit of a cabin so this was important to me this  is actually ambrosia maple wood and we got this at a woodworker supply store in phoenix  our backsplash is a stone tile it is adhesive we actually found it at home depot we went and  sprayed a waterproof sealer on top of it as well here we decided to do another pop-out  like we did in our previous build and that was just to maximize countertop space  the sink is a copper basin and i know this sounds a little weird but it actually reminds  me of w
here we left tennessee because i had one that was three times this size and the  kitchen that we renovated so it just kind of grounds me reminds me where we came from looking  at a copper sink i know that sounds kind of funny we have hot water on demand our hot water heater  it's actually underneath here it is a little over one gallon and it's always on and then this  big boy is our fridge so we have a 90 liter ice co fridge freezer i keep one side as the  fridge and i keep the other side as the
freezer we also have an 81 gallon fresh  water tank those are the necessities that and staying charged of course we  are all electric but between all of these things i'm pretty sure we could stay  off grid for about two weeks which is great so behind curtain number one here is our wet bath  and shower we have an airhead composting toilet and as far as our shower is concerned  this is a little unique we went with these bullfinch shower valves we've got one inside the  shower here and the valve j
ust plugs in right here and when you turn it on it automatically mixes  the hot and cold water inside and then you do have to do a little bit of a military shower but i'm  perfectly fine with that to conserve water anyways we could not set the toilet directly  on the shower pan for obvious reasons we wanted something that allowed the water to  drain through so we ended up making this platform out of teak wood we sanded it down we sealed it  real good and put a i don't know maybe four or five coa
ts of varnish on top of it the floors are  actually original with the box yes we got the box brand new but it came with unfinished white oak  floors so i took this project upon my own hands and sanded this sucker down we stained it went  over with a poly about five times so my knees were definitely feeling it by the time i was done  but i'm super happy with the way it turned out dual bunk beds these are the boys one child  sleeps here and the next one is up there this is where they put their lit
tle feet in  to climb up it's kind of like a ladder slash cubby hole that we designed welcome to our  bunk bed my name is lucas welcome to my room this is moomoo snakey mr moo and  longneck clothes toys and more clothes hello my name is copy they've made the mousse this is mom and dad's bed we've got a queen bed  here it is a full-size queen and that was one of the things that we really didn't want to  compromise on because sleep is important so we were super stoked when we found that we  could
fit a standard size mattress behind this wall it's a little uh deceiving you wouldn't  think there's so much pack behind here but let's start with the closet so this is daddy's  closet and then this is one child's closet and this is where we decided to keep our dirty  clothes we ended up just getting some cheap bags from like tj maxx or something and when it's  time to do laundry it's easy just take those out and out we go and here is where our mechanicals  are so we've got our inverter we've go
t a transformer in here below that these panels all  unscrew behind this wall is where our battery bank is we've got three server style batteries  and then this door back here is where we can access both of our dc to dc chargers we have dual  dc to dc chargers because we have dual alternators on the truck right now i only think we're needing  to run one of them though it gives us sufficient power we haven't needed to use both of them so  this is my closet of course being the female i have just n
aturally a little more clothes than  the boys do so i got double the size that they did in this corner this is kind of like our bench  seating area and a little bit more storage we have a little library here and this is where we  keep some things that we frequently access we keep our camera back there books that we get to often  speaker and up top is where i keep a little bit more of the boys school work and we just have like  an arts and crafts little basket up here as well this is a really sim
ple do-it-yourself  table it was important to us to have a table not only to eat but do  schoolwork and to do a little bit of filming and editing just computer work we  needed a designated space for that which we lacked in our previous rig so that was one of  the things that we really needed and we found a really simple solution for it so all this does  is unlatch we have one leg on it and it comes down underneath our bench here we've got a couple  drawers this big one houses some miscellaneous
things and then the boys have their own little  toy drawer down here so another thing we're really excited about in the box here is above my head we  have a 240 volt 9000 btu and ovary mini split with a heat pump which means we are comfortable when  it's hot outside and we are comfortable when it's cold outside we've had to use it a couple times  already and it's come in super handy it's one of those things that i'm not ashamed to have call  it glamping i don't care we love it it's been a great
addition and i'm just thankful that you know  we have enough power to actually run this thing going from the van which was about 80  square feet to inside here which is like 115 15 square feet it feels like the taj mahal  to me if you'd told me 10 years ago that this is what we'd be doing i probably would  have said you're crazy there's no way that we leave society as we know it and choose  this lifestyle but i wouldn't look back now you gotta have a big house you gotta have this  and that to be
what happy no i think we're more happier here than with all those things for  sure this is a journey of growth growth of like just our marriage our bond with our kids within  ourselves all of it it's a growing process you find out who you are and overall i think  just become a more rounded person if you want something in life you really got to go  after it as crazy as your dreams might sound it's attainable if you put your  mind to it you can do anything thanks for watching this week's video  p
lease remember to like share and subscribe and i will see you soon with  another unique home tour you
