[Music] welcome back our friend the digger dude is back and this time he's talking about papers that's right how to be legit when it comes to finding fossils lance welcome back to river city live always great to see you and learn about what you've been up to dude so great to be here thanks a lot uh yeah it's that time of year that uh once a year you need to renew your fossil permit it's time for me to renew mine i get a lot of questions about why you need a fossil permit what that covers what it
doesn't cover so i figured we'd talk about that today and figure out how if you would like to get your fossil permit how to do that or how to renew your permit you know my first question with that do kids need one because a lot of times with licenses whether it's like fishing or something like that if you're under a certain age you don't need one yeah there's two options with that if you have uh children who are minors you can cover them under your adult permit no worries there but if you would
like your child to have one you can apply as well don't need to but if they like one you can do that as well it's pretty cool the frame right yeah it makes it a little bit more official will we know that sharks teeth megalodon teeth qualify as fossils do they have to be permitted though yeah that's a great question eden i get that quite a bit uh shark teeth you do not need a permit to collect sharks teeth so anytime that you're out at the beach uh you find some sharks teeth on the beach keep th
em you don't need a permit for that where you need your permit is you start running into mammal fossils or vertebrate fossils and that's where you need to apply for your permit for okay now there are also things that permit or know you're not supposed to take is that correct that is correct a lot of that artifacts for example indian artifacts anything of previous civilization we can't keep those those are protected by the state we need to stay away from artifacts those aren't covered under a flo
rida fossil permit if you happen to come across them what do you do do you report them do you turn them in do you leave them alone if you find artifacts out in the field what the state advises you to do if you find them in the river take it we want to preserve that history throw it further back into the river and that's what the state suggests that you do if you find indian artifacts or things like that okay now you have a table full right in front of you let's say you were first of all let's le
t's go through the form is it very complicated is it very expensive and then i want to see what's on the table because every time you bring things there's always something really cool there yeah very cool no it's a very easy process uh on my facebook page facebook.comthediggerdude i put the link out to the florida natural history museum's website to where you can actually download the form and send this in it's a very simple process you just print out the form and fill it out you do need to prov
ide a photo of like your driver's license or your birth certificate just so you can they know it's you who's applying for the permit with a five dollar uh checker money order made out to the museum and that's all you need to do right now due to coveted concerns there is a little bit of a turnaround time it can take up to three weeks to get your permit right now and then you have to go back the next year when you reapply and actually log what you found so that's where we can kind of look at the t
able how would you classify some of those things yeah absolutely so again kind of what we talked about we don't need to sharks teeth we don't need to claim those when we start getting into mammal fossils that's what we need to do and there's a separate process at the end of the year when you get ready to renew you have a form like this and it's pretty simple um sharks teeth we don't need when we start finding some other mammal stuff like this is a mastodon tooth recently found in frenitina beach
we've got a whale tooth some horse teeth some glyptodon scoots a really nice vertebrae simply what you do on your form is just write what you found in a general location of where you found it at and what that does it helps the state they're permitting us to hunt on state lands where digging is permitted and what we do is for these different species it helps the state find out what the range of some of these animals were so in report we found a horse tooth in fernadina beach it helps the state k
now that that particular species even traveled up into this area at some point in our past history well lance thank you so much for all your time and information i think it's something i'm going to do because it's the closest that i will get to being indiana jones i was going to say you feel childhood idol i don't know lance is closer because he has the hat but we're going to be seeing lance more in the coming days and weeks so we appreciate that very much
