- Historically, women have been massively underrepresented in the field of orthopedics, and here at HSS, we're really dedicated to making sure we can support the professional development of women. This year, Dr. Daphne Scott recently was named as the medical director for the New York Knicks. Marci Goolsby was named as the medical director for the Women's NBA. We have the Women's Sports Medicine Center, which is one of the centers that's built out of our Sports Medicine Institute. - The Women's S
ports Medicine Center was started over 25 years ago by Lisa Callahan, a primary care sports medicine physician, and Jo Hannafin, an orthopedic surgeon who met and basically just started a conversation and by the end of the conversation had decided to form this women's sports medicine center to make sure that their female patients felt they had a good place to come and get care. - One of the most important things that I think has come to being is something called the Perry Initiative, which is sp
ecifically a program that's focused on encouraging young women at the high school age to expand their interest in science and specifically within medicine, orthopedic surgery. It is a program that is nationwide. Our local champion here is Dr. Shevaun Doyle, who's passionate about this initiative and has been running it for several years. - For many high school girls, engineering, orthopedics is not something that's in their thoughts when they're thinking about different career pathways, and our
goal through this program is to engage them so that they do think about these careers as they go through high school. - A lot of the mentors that I've had in my life are females, and, I think, are part of that women's history and being pioneers in the field. - The first female president of the Orthopaedic Research Society was a scientist from HSS named Adele Boskey, and she really broke the mold and encouraged women like me who've grown their careers at HSS to reach for the stars. And now, with
me in the presidential line, I want to play it forward, and if a leadership role is something that they aspire for, there are people across HSS that are here to support them, to help them progress in their careers. (dramatic music)
