This is their alcohol! I was about to drink it thinking it was water. Slaves were hung here and were sold off here. They were then sent to North America, etc. Are you Rastafari? Yeah, I'm a Rastafari. A girl here said, 'marry me & take me to India.' This street is about 550-600 years old. Achu just told me, an Indian was killed in a car. Welcome from a new video from Cape Verde's capital: Praia on the Santiago Island. As you know from the last video, Cape Verde lies 400 nautical miles to the wes
t of Senegal. Let's get in this car. Hello! How are you? Good, what about you? I'm good as well. Thank you so much for coming here and I'm really sorry for making you wait. My apartment's like on the 3rd floor. During my first night in Cape Verde I went to a hotel from the airport as you saw in the video. I got hungry at night and I went out to eat where I met an Indian. He said 'thank you' looking at me, so I talk to him. They were from South India and I became friends with him. They bring me t
o a car where I met him Mr.Achu from Kerela. They both live here. The other guy I met didn't come today. We became friends, & he dropped me to the hotel. We also exchanged numbers. So, he is taking me today to explore Santiago or Praia. We are going to Cidade Velha. What's that! Portuguese were the first to discover these islands of Cape Verde around 1456. Cidade Velha was the initial capital which was then changed to Praia. Sanitago is a big island with 9 municipalities with Praia as the capita
l having everything here. We're going to Cidade Velha, the former capital. These are the streets of Praia. Yesterday, I was exploring on foot & today I'm going around in the car. I was 5 minutes away from the beach but I didn't go for a swim. It was very crowded. It was crowded on Sunday & I arrived at night on Saturday.. I was busy with the city tour yesterday (Monday) so heading to explore the city today. Tomorrow is my return flight to Senegal. and then to Mali and Achu asked me... Achu! That
's how you pronounce? He asked me to postpone the ticket and I asked him why & he told me they have their biggest festival tomorrow. Its a festival of Maize. Festival of Maize. The crop? Yeah, exactly. Okay! He also told me an interesting thing I'll also show it to you. Vasco da Gama first came here & then went to Kerela in India. Right? From Cabo to Kappad beach. Kappad beach is in Kerela? In Kerela, exactly! Oh okay! The houses are so colorful here. Look, how beautiful they are. Portuguese sty
le! It is Portuguese architecture. Yeah exactly! Okay! Houses are colorful, as you saw in the city yesterday too. Its because Cape Verde was Portuguese colony. This is a shopping center. Shopping center, okay. Its called Prasa center. Prasa center! My restaurant is inside. You have a restaurant here? We'll go when you come back. Okay perfect. We have Indian Shawarma. But you don't eat meat, right? I eat only chicken. Okay, I have chicken. Okay! The machine is here in our factory. And you bought
it from there? Yeah! So Achu told me that he went to Haryana last year. I asked where he went in Haryana. He said something & I asked if he means Charkhi Dadri. He said yes & he has machines in Cape Verde from there. The first time I met him, 3 days ago was around 11 pm. So the next day, he told me not to go out at night. I also knew its not safe at night. He and a few others told me, that its not safe to go out at night. Uhm, what are the usual crimes that happen here at night? They will catch
you & take your mobile. Mobile yeah! They will attack you... They have guns or knives? No-no both. Both guns and knives. Such crimes happen at night here... So, we're leaving the city okay! Now we're outside the Praia city? Yeah, Praia city exactly. I got in the car 5 minutes ago and as you can see from the video we're outside the main capital city. It seems as if we're in the jungle within 5 minutes. This is the main university here. University of Cape Verde! It was built by the Chinese. You s
tayed in Charkhi Dadri for 3-4 days? Yeah! Wow! The hotel name was Radisson but not the real Radisson. There's no Radisson in Charkhi Dadri. That's... yeah that's a different Radisson. Yeah-yeah! So, he stayed in Charkhi Dadri and I was telling him... I'm from Hissar which is like 1-1.5 hours away from Charkhi Dadri. Okay okay! I have a poultry farm in Charkhi Dadri as well. Yeah, my own farm. Okay! I have family in Charkhi Dadri. I have cousins who live there. My nephews, nieces. Its so interes
ting as we met in a different part of the world and he had been to Haryana. That's a church there. Its a beautiful church. That's Cidade Velha in front. Due to the sun, it might not be clearly visible. Look at this typical town that looks just like a Portuguese village. It was a church? Yeah! It was a church. Oh! So, pirates came here who destroyed this church. Look at its condition now. It doesn't look like a city at all. This is the city centre. Its pretty! I like the town. Its a nice place. P
ortuguese discovered these islands of Cape Verde and were uninhabited before. As I said, they were discovered around 1456 or 15th century and trade was done from here. Africans or blacks were brought & sold here. There's a port here from where the trade was done. Where do you think they were sent? Were they sent to North America or Europe? The slaves! Outside countries! Outside countries like North America & Europe although I'm not too sure. So, slaves were sold from here and then sent in ships.
I think tourists are taking a dip here. From here we can see the church. The fort there! We're going to the church first as its entry will close then. Cape Verde gained independence in 1975 & became a fully sovereign country or island group. There's another house behind. This entire region is called Macaronesia lying to the west of Africa. All the other island groups like Azores, Madeira or Canary are still under Portuguese or Spain. They aren't fully sovereign countries. In this region, Cape V
erde is the only country that gained sovereignty and is an independent country. As it was a Portuguese colony, its influence is still strong here. People from here go to Portugal to work. Their language is Cape Verdean Creole & Portuguese. They use Creole to communicate and Portuguese is the official language. Women are selling clothes outside this typical house. But there's no tourist. I bought fridge magnet like I buy from every country but since I'm here I'll buy something from here. This how
much? 200! But its still cheap. Yesterday, I got it for 500 in Praia city centre. Here its cheap. Its better, I'll take one. As you see, its called Cabo Verde or Cape Verde is a group of islands. with 5 in the north & 4 in the south. Its in a V or horseshoe shape. We're in Santiago whose capital is Praia. We're right now in Cidade Velha city. Sal is the touristy island among them. I think its this one. Ask her to give me any one. Any-any! Yeah! No stress. No stress. It's beautiful. Bye! Oh, she
'll give its wrapper too. Wow, its such a small village with such colorful & beautiful houses. Its fun walking here. If you've seen my Honduras videos, so this town looks similar to Saint Lucia. Is it open? Yeah, its open. Okay, let's go! This is the church. That church was destroyed by the pirates but this was not. No-no! Okay! If you see the dates written on these stones then it says 1563. These stones kept here are over 500 years old. The church would also be this old. This is the church's ol
d bell. Not sure how old it is. They've kept it outside. Its amazing. Its so peaceful. Its so quiet. No! In Christianity, when you name the baby... Oh, baptize...for baptism yeah! A child is baptized when its born. Its a way of making the child pure Before the baby is named, it is dipped in this holy water. I can be wrong as I don't know much about Christianity. It is as far as I know. This is a catholic church, right? Yeah! They have a population of 5.5 lakhs and 80% of them are Christians. The
y are mostly Catholics and some are Protestants. The remaining population is either non-religious or 2-3% follow other religions too. You can call it a Christian country. That's a cat & hens that side. There're some cats that side. Some more hens & a dog there. In fact, dogs! This country has been settled for nearly 600 years. This street is 500-600 years old Its considered the first street of Cape Verde after the country settled. This is a convent called Convento de Sao Francisco but its closed
. One thing that makes Cape Verde distinct from other African countries are the QR codes you find everywhere. Its a digital country if you see. You'll get ATM machines. You can pay with a card. They make alcohol from sugarcane here. What's the name of the alcoholic drink? Grogue! Grogue? Yeah! Okay, Cape Verdean Grogue. Yeah! Can we find it here in the town? Yeah sure! Okay, we'll see that. Internet over here is fluctuating. So, Achu just told me that the internet got hacked here a week ago. So
meone hacked it and everyone got unlimited internet. They could use it as much as they want. So their government... Is it ... the telecom company is called Alo right? Alo, yeah exactly. Its owned by the government or is it a private company? No, its a private company. Okay! Alo is trying to fix that. Hence, the internet is fluctuating & is quite problematic. These are remains of a Portuguese construction or something. Its as it now. You can look at that women's haircolor but otherwise her skin c
olor is dark brown. The reason behind this is that people here or the ethnicity is considered different. When the Portuguese came here, they brought slaves that mixed with population here leading to new race called Mestizo or Creole. Latin American Mestizos are different as are a mix of indigenous & Spanish people. Mestizos here are a mix of Africans and Portuguese. Mostly people here have dark brown skin that shows their African ancestry. While, they have green or blue eyes, blonde hair or othe
r combination. They may have black skin and blonde hair. You'll see some weird combinations due to which they are considered among the most beautiful in the world. What's she asking? Do I speak Creole? Yeah! So, they speak Creole here to talk amongst each other. Their official language is Portuguese. They have 10 main islands. Even their flag has 10 stars depicting the 10 islands. There are other small islands too. Santiago is one among those 10 main islands and 40% of the total population resi
des here. Praia; where we started is home to 1/5th of the population or half of Santiago's population. So, the remaining population is scattered on this Santiago island. We are back near the convent after a hike. In Cabo, we have a music and its called Batuk. Batuk? That's the music? I forgot to tell you the music & culture is very rich here...hello! Their music is influenced from different cultures. Can you play the music? Yeah! This is Cape Verdean music? Like I told you about Cape Verde's his
tory is a mix of African, European, etc. Different cultures have come here. Its also not on mainland Africa and lies in the Atlantic Ocean. Portuguese came here & slaves were exported from Africa. Tourists from all over the world come here. So it depends... Which country influences it more depends on the island you are on. Some islands are friends with Netherlands and some are friends with Portugal. Some are visited more by Brazilians and Americans on some. Due to so much mixture, their music h
as become a special thing. Its influenced from different cultures. Their music, dance, etc. are very popular. We're the only ones in this restaurant & music is playing. Its very hot and we both are sweating. This is their alcohol and I was about to drink thinking it is water. This is made from Sugarcane right? Yeah! Can I get some water as well? Some water? Its served neat & nothing is mixed in it Should I drink directly? Yeah, but drink it slowly. Not at one time. Okay... I'll drink slowly. Sip
-sip! Okay, sip-sip! Its bitter like alcohol. Its hard. Yeah, it's very hard. You can drink your water. The taste didn't go yet but it's sweet. A bit... a little sweet as well. No its because its made from Sugarcane. Yeah, very little sweetness due to sugarcane. Its like alcohol. It's not like Whiskey. It looked like Vodka but isn't that either. Its different! Here's our Pineapple juice. Pineapple juice and sugarcane alcohol. Like I told you, Achu went to Charkhi Dadri to buy machines from Sumit
. So, he went there. He called Sumit, as we're both from Haryana. He called him and when I spoke to him I found out he knew my brother-in-law, etc. He asked why & how I'm here so I told him about it. He asked if I was Paramvir, and I said yes. He knew me, my brother-in law, and had acquaintances. I'm in other part of the world. In Cabo Verde! Not even in Africa but on an island in Atlantic Ocean where I met someone who is from Kerela (South India) He makes a call in Charkhi Dadri who turns out t
o be acquainted with me. Amazing! The world seems like a small place at times. We're leaving after having food. Not food but had some juice and... What's the name of this? Grogue! I drank Grogue and Achu told me you don't feel anything when you drink it as it has a slow effect. I don't feel anything yet. Whenever slaves were exported from this port, they were kept on this. They were maybe hung here and were then auctioned. People present here auctioned the slaves Those who were young & healthy w
ere auctioned for more while less for elders. How much do you think they would pay for me if I am slave. Free! Free! No one would pay for me. So, auctioning was done here and were then exported through ships. So, this was done to humans. They were treated like an object. As it is evening, it has become lively and I even saw some foreigners or tourists. There're some stalls here. Souvenir stalls. Cups & bags. This is a stall with some things... They are fighting there. They are fighting. What's t
his? Seed! Seed. Its called Orela... Orel? Don't know what seed it is. Are you Rastafari? Yeah, I'm a Rastafari. Oh nice. You like Bob Marley? Bob Marley is my hero. He's your ideal? If you've seen my videos from Caribbean you'll remember I went to Jamaica & Bob Marley is from there. Rastafari is a religion I've discussed it in Caribbean's videos. You'll notice they have long hair from back. So they have long hair. You'll meet such people in Caribbean. I told you about this beautiful house, righ
t. So, I met Hamilton here. Hamilton! It's his grandmother's house. That's your grandmom's home? Yeah! It's his grandmother's house and he has a restaurant here. You have a restaurant here as well, right? Yeah, it is right there. What is it called? Prasa du Maar? It has sea food, some meat too. Okay! Go there & you'll find whatever you want. I was shocked to see him speak English but he told me it was because tourists come here. He knew English. I asked him if he went to US and he said he has tr
avelled there. Each island has a different weather here. Eastern Islands are close to Africa and get Harmattan winds making the weather dry and hot. It has less greenery. As I told in Mauritania's videos the hot winds in Sahara desert are called Harmattan winds. The Eastern Islands have less vegetation because of the heat. While the western islands are green and rocky as you can see. You can take Santiago as an example. It is rocky and has greenery. Look at these waves. During sunset... we came
to the beach at the perfect time. Amazing! There're some boats there. Like every big town, Praia is a bit dangerous. Like every small town, this town is very safe. People are welcoming & nice. Everyone was laughing and talking. They happily greeted me and wanted to talk. They offered me food, etc.T I had fun in this city. But as I saw, there's not much to do here. I think there's not much to see here but its just a calm place to relax, right. These are some tourists that I think came from Praia
in taxi. They were going back as its getting dark. All the cars are going back. See! People are returning. From Praia... I think it was a 15-minute drive, right? Yeah! Very close! Its a small island. It has got dark a & we've officially entered Praia city. We've come back. It is just a 15-minute drive from Praia. You can see the petrol pump and the prices. Above is the petrol price, which is 160 CVE ($1.56) or ₹128. Below it is diesel's price at 146 CVE ($1.43) or ₹118 roughly. Here? Yeah, that
side. He told me, a man was killed here in 2014. He also told me about an Indian who was killed in his car here. Thieves got in his car and demanded money, but he fought back. He was shot and killed by the two robbers. This is their popular ice-cream shop and we're here to have ice-cream. I usually take cone but they have some deserts too. It'll be fun. He isn't letting me pay anywhere. He pays the bill everytime. He didn't let me pay at the restaurant and not even here. This is a mix of chocola
te and coffee. Okay! This shop is here since 1990. Thank you! We're at their main shopping complex now. Some music is playing here & people are cycling to the music. This is the main shopping complex. He has his restaurant here. What's the name of this complex? Prasa Centre! Prasa Centre? Yeah! Okay! There's a football match today so they're watching that. People are watching it on the TV screen. We're going to a supermarket. I'll show you the prices and I have to buy water, dry fruits, etc. Thi
s is a bus stop. People are waiting for the bus. The bus service is not government run but is run by Sol Atlantico private company. Its the only bus service provider in Cape Verde. It is a small island so people know each other. Achu met an acquaintance here. He is meeting someone or the other. Let's go inside this supermarket here. This is their local alcohol, Grogue. It is produced here & then sold. How much... its for 790 CVE ($7.73)! How much? 790? Yeah, 790 CVE! So, a bottle is for ₹600-650
($7.73). You'll get it for cheap if you buy it from someone locally. You'll get it for about 300-400 CVE ($2.93-3.91). Grogue... grogue! All of these are Grogue. See, so much variety. They have made it fancy. How much is this! Its pricey for 1100 CVE ($10.76). Its for around ₹1000. We've come to this complex and there's a kid play area here, and many shops. People have come for dinner as it is off tomorrow. I think this is why people are still out. Its 9 pm right now. Its super crowded. This i
s your restaurant? Yeah! Habibi! Its really nice. Its called Habibi & they have fresh oven for pizza. This is their oven. They take wood. Youtuber! Hello! I don't speak Portuguese, sorry. You speak English? Oh, that's great! They use wood and keep pizza in the oven This is the staff. A girl here said, 'marry me & take me to India.' They are joking with me. You can see there're all kinds of people. Like, some of them are totally black while some are very fair. You can see! They are all mix. None
of them appear to be African. Some are totally black & some are brown. There are some white just like North Indians. Look at this man! The lady behind is black. So, the people are mixed. Here's my Shawarma with chicken. Pizza is yet to come. We're sitting here.
