We Begin tonight with the story new at six a teacher caught on video repeatedly using a racial slur during the Middle School class in Fontana Inland Empire bureau chief Rob McMillan has the video and reaction including how the school district is now responding I was just thinking saying this teacher is out of her mind we're not showing her face or using her name but this student who is African-American says she shot this video in her language arts class at Sequoia Middle School in Fontana showin
g her teacher using the n-word over and over and over again [Music] was trying to force him to say the word and she repeatedly kept saying it and she had a smirk on her face how many times probably like 15 or more how did the issue come up well according to several students the class was reading a Mark Twain novel when someone asked the teacher about the spelling of the n-word that's what prompted this reaction from the teacher the teacher got in front of this class and she was saying that the w
ord is just an English word and everybody could say if she wants to it's in the dictionary and that people are oversensitive over the word what do you think about that uh not acceptable Caroline Rivera has two students at this school in her opinion the teacher needs to be disciplined of course uh pulling the teacher out uh maybe calling a bit of training again the Fontana Unified School District would not comment on whether this teacher was disciplined or not but did provide a statement that rea
d in part quote while we acknowledge that this derogatory language comes from a novel first published in the late 1800s and that historical context is important to consider when discussing literature the district does not condone the language that was used in the video or using that language outside the context of discussing the novel we reached the teacher by phone but she told us she did not want to comment on the video in Fontana Rob McMillan ABC 7 Eyewitness News hello I'm Mark Brown get mor

What makes me upset is that she was bullying him into saying something he didn’t want to say. That’s not cool, kids have enough bullies at school for her to harass him the way she did.

@2weird2be

This is an unacceptable reaction to a student’s question. Handle it maturely, or face the consequences of your childish actions. That teacher should be fired immediately.

@jm7578

She is the grandmaster of wasting instructional time, and making students feel awful.

@vxmm14

She needs to be terminated for how she was trying to intimidate and provoking a minor to do something they’re clearly uncomfortable with .

@brooklyn3299

This is how a lot of middle managers and bosses act in the real world and they get away with it everyday. This needs to stop.

@elsierodgers4874

She tried to make him say it. She's despicable.

@klassynsassy4802

This isn’t surprising to me! Training won’t fix the fact this behavior comes from within. She’s showing us exactly who is she and how she feels. Moving right along🤷🏾‍♀️🍿

@JC-br3tz

Just imagine if there were no cell phones, she would have lied and said she said no such things smh She should be fired 🤔

@cherylross4040

The problem was her reaction to the student's question. She's nuts and may need to consider a different career. Girl, take some time to get yourself together.

When I read huckleberry we did some reading aloud in class. When we reached that word there was a bit of discomfort that rose especially for the student reading. The teacher said that if he didn’t want to read that word it is fine and perfectly understandable. The teacher then went on to explain the context of why the word is being used in the book.

@fijisiings

She had a whole lot of balls saying it in front of kids. I’m sure she doesn’t have have that balls when speaking to people her own age. She probably thought no one had their phone on them.

We're definitely not getting the full story here.

@user-rw2dr5my1s

Just because it’s in the dictionary, doesn’t mean you need to say it out loud or that it’s not offensive. I didn’t think this needs to be explained, but here we are.

@susanhill149

Good for that girl who taped that nasty teacher. we parents can’t be in the classroom with our kids but our kids cellphones are!

@jkidd1982

This is why ive always homeschooled my kids, if you're not looking out for possible school shooters youre looking out for teachers who will abuse your child in one way or another. That was insane and she should be fired immediately.

Back in school whenever we had to read books about history, and the n slur was there the teachers would just say “blank” or “I don’t say that word” and move on. Nobody should use that type of language in the workplace. It’s rude will hurt the black kids in the room—or anybody really. It’s getting old, seriously.

@edithdlp8045

My daughter is in high school and told me that her English literature teacher said that the n work was in the context of the novel and encouraged them to repeat it. No one did. He did not forced them to do it after everyone refused. He is in his 60's.

@ajbotte1003

Fired is the only answer...that teacher was enjoying the student’s discomfort

@philscott3759

Stop acting like it's the greatest atrocity in history, please.

@sandyjuntunen4088

I can't believe anyone could be so horrible, especially to a child. Schools are so dangerous now, parents should homeschool if at all possible.
