(suspenseful futuristic music) (heavy breathing) (door opening) - Good morning Mr. Freeman, how are you feeling? - Couldn't be better. Wait, wait. What is this? - It's just a pre-anesthetic Mr. Freeman, nothing to worry about, it's gonna make you feel a little bit numb, maybe a little bit sleepy. (electronic beep) I'm gonna take you down to surgery now Mr. Freeman. (door opening) (suspenseful futuristic music) (door opening) (medical machines beeping) Just a minute. - [Doctor] Good morning Mr. F
reeman. - Hello. - How are you? Are you ready? - I guess so, your nurse gave me something. - I looked at your brain scan and the tumor is pretty deep in there. But I am sure we can get it out. Never seen your clone before have you? - No never, it's strange. - First we are going to mirror your brain, it's a standard backup procedure. Your IQ is 442. - I'm a professor for quantum physics and dark matter. - You must be a genius. Well let's get things rolling shall we? (suspenseful music) (chair hyd
raulics lifting) How many layers are we doing? - Four Dr. Richards. - [Doctor] Prepare the backup. - [Voiceover] Initiating backup procedure. - Everything seems to be in order. - The magnetic fields are stable, up-link is ready. - Are you feeling drowsy? - No, not really, but I feel something, it's like ants crawling through my brain. - Tingling? It's part of the process. - Well, as long as you don't copy the tumor. - Just your memories. You can breathe normally. We're starting the transfer now.
- A backup, in case of what? - In the unlikely event that something would go wrong during surgery, it would give us a chance to save you. - Save me? Well, if I wake up over there, that's not gonna be me, I'm not him, right? I mean-- - You would wake up in a different body. - Huh? I've got a tumor in my head the size of an apple, that is not the way to fix it. - Mr. Freeman, we have to follow protocol before we do the surgery. - Point is, quantum physics says it's impossible to make an exact cop
y of anything. You can't copy the probability distribution of electrons, if I die, I die, that's it. - [Voiceover] Minor interference detected. - Is it still readable on your screen? - Well it's there, but it's-- It could be better. - When we fall asleep at night, our conscious is turned off, our basic self is gone. But when you wake up the next day, how do you know you are the same as you were before? You might have been sleeping for weeks or maybe frozen for centuries. - I guess I could tell,
if I'd been sleeping for hundreds of years. - Yes, but you could only tell by looking at your surroundings, me, the ship, not by how you felt. As long as your memories are the same, you'll think that it was you going to bed, in reality you can't be sure that you're still you, maybe last night didn't even exist. - What are you saying? That I'm a clone? - I'm just saying, if you can't tell the difference why be so worried? You may have been dying every single night since you were born. We're all m
emories professor, that's our soul. - (gasps) I'm sorry doctor, I-- - [Voiceover] Warning, major interference detected. - It's not looking good over here, he's running out of time. - Status? - 79.1%, he's accessing the hippocampus, how is that possible? - Can't be. - It looks like he's analyzing some complex mathematical equation. - No, he's praying. Increase the fields. - But if we increase the fields it-- - Do it. (dramatic suspenseful music) - Increasing on sector five, 84.6%. - Memories. I h
ave memories, of how I got my scar for example. I used to get butterflies when I was young. (gasps) I married my wife, it was 'cos she smiled. (gasps) Everything's blurry now, I can't move my eyes. I don't wanna fucking die here you know. I just don't want to fucking die here. (dramatic suspenseful music) My memories. I can see. - He's shutting down the mainframe, he's running out of time. - [Voiceover] Emergency (muffled) activated. (electric surging) - Transfer complete Dr. Richards. - [Voiceo
ver] Transfer complete. - Did we get all of it? - Er, yes, em, well most of it. October of last year could be gone, a couple of days in November. - Nothing major is missing? - Nothing in the files doctor. - We have to fabricate the scar. - Do you-- Do you want me to shut him down and start the transfer? - Ah, yes Sophie, thank you. Let's play some music. (slow suspenseful music) What are you waiting for? - Nothing I, I-- We killed him. - We saved him, forever and a day. (door opening) (slow susp
enseful music)

@CannonRanger2023

it's so good to see Rutger again. He was such a versatile and natural actor. I don't know how you got him to participate in this but thank you for letting us see him in his brilliance again. Fantastic story. The writing and direction is spot on. ❤️

@getworking5652

“I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die.” Rest in peace Rutger.

@dnmurphy48

This is the kind of thing where SciFi really shines, ethical and moral dilemmas with futuristic piossibilities

@donm5354

Anything with the great Rutger Hauer is a treat - a rare talent. He is missed by many. His memory lives on. Well done short 10/10. Makes you think about what make us...US, and what happens when our consciousness leaves our bodies or even what REALLY happens when we sleep or die. Only thing better if there was a part 2 to see what happens when the patient is in his new body.

@PrimitiveInTheExtreme

Magnificent short film. Here we have a piece of film history, Rutger Hauer, what an incredible actor. Great all of them, really great work.

@davidgarbey3596

There he is...one of my all time favourite actors! When Blade Runner came out in Germany, i was twenty and made a copy from a VHS rental cassette to a Sony Betamax. It became even darker and more sinister, loved it! The times of Billy Idol, Sade, Robert Palmer, David Bowie...unforgetable and never replicable.

@oracleofdelhi553

R.I.P Rutger Hauer.He was like this Clone.His memories live for Ever,A DAY

@dayegilharno4988

Wow! This was High-End, in every aspect. I wish they'd still make movies like this!

@aubryhylton5189

This is so appropriate for Rutger Hauer, as similar questions of existence and memory were posed in Blade Runner by Roy Batty and the other replicants. "Did you get your precious photos?" I love this type of existential examination, and it's so good to see Rutger again. What a treat!

@ruipires7954

That was some very good acting to the gentlemen on the chair.I actually dropped a tear.

@NoTimeForLies

Rutger Hauer. He's the reason I watched this film. An amazing actor! Thank you everyone who made his role possible. I would like to see a behind the scenes look at how he was brought into this project and any comments he has to share. This was a really big deal and a great surprise! It just seems there should be a little more in the making to top it off. That said, this was a great film. The director and cast did an excellent job in bringing the characters to life and making the story believable. Set design, tech, lighting, special effects, camera angles. It's all there and it's all incredibly good! Thank you Dust!

@johnathancorgan3994

Just the name Rutger Hauer in the opening credits brought a smile to my face that lasted the duration of this entire short.

@phthisis

RIP Mr Hauer, who played a legendary android that helped influence the cyberpunk genre by leaps and bounds. This story is a solid existential crisis for modern audiences, and it reminds me of a Twilight Zone/Outer Limits episode where they proclaimed they'd invented teleportation to allow instant travel between worlds/stars, but in fact all they'd done is clone people at their destination while executing the original body to prevent doubles.

@christophelombardi7810

A brilliant little gem! And what a pleasure to see Rutger Hauer once more. He's always very good. Congrats to all involved.

@daveb6214

Thank you for showing this , with the Late Great Rutger Hauer. He was truly one in a Billion, he could play anything or anyone. Godspeed Rutger G.B.N.F. Ever.

@lukebowers536

It was so good to see Rutger again even if only for a short while, this is one of the finest most well presented pieces on Dust yet, i was gripped by this & it left me wanting more, this has the basis for a full feature, everything was there in the right amounts from the acting to the graphics to the sound, outstanding !

@danabana8121

Beautiful work by all. I love Rutger’s entire film career. These 3 people together are just perfect. Well done. Bravo. 👏👏👏

@michaelkottler

You had me at Rutger Hauer (one of the greats), Bolliger. Pleased Mr. Hauer joined this production as he's amazing. Clones is a solid short w/a good premise, fine direction, acting, casting & more, It feels primarily like a platform for Rutger to shine upon all too briefly and then disappear....like tears in rain, leaving us wanting more.

@berjo77

Great subject, our health, mortality and soul all wrapped into one. The “professor“ was very convincing, had me feeling bad for him.

@conniecarroll747

Always love seeing the brilliance of Rutger Hauer.
