almost 10 000 vehicles have been reported stolen off Toronto streets so far this year and many are ending up in other countries and continents CTV Sean Woodward has been tracking Canadian cars across the globe where some say there are unnecessary barriers to bringing them home trucks lined up outside a port in Dubai video and pictures obtained by CTV News show Vehicles seized in the middle eastern city but authorities believed they were stolen from Canada same with these vehicles seized in Belgi
um and Europe and these vehicles recovered in Morocco make it very obvious with Ontario Police and other markings including on this red Ram truck a truck Mark Renault hasn't seen since January when it was stolen from him in Windsor Ontario I was shocked for a week why that place you know like nothing against Africa but it was uh I'm still shocked police in Ontario confirmed to renote the truck had been found more than six thousand kilometers away it was the first time in my life I've ever had a
vehicle stolen and I was very upset uh to lose a truck that I worked so hard to have his truck is still stuck abroad among so many others that have been seized that storing them all is a big challenge low recovery rates especially in Ontario and Quebec when you couple that with the number of vehicles that are being identified by your International partners that are Canadian Vehicles hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of vehicles that have made it their way to uh to other countries successfully a
nd then now trying to repatriate those Vehicles back to Canada is a longer process it's a mess it has been crazy this last year one company Global Trends which tracks stolen cars says the paperwork is a problem we don't have the same database so it takes time to get in touch with Equity or to get in touch with Interpol Ottawa and then it takes really a bunch of days and meanwhile these cars and these containers are blocking in the sports because they have taken so many space authorities are maki
ng progress dozens of cars were returned from the Mediterranean Port of Malta to York regional police earlier this year and 24 cars worth some 2.6 million dollars were returned to Halton police last month car thefts continue to Surge to about 9 500 so far this year in Toronto for example up 45 since last year but seizures at Canadian borders are plateauing seizing 1 310 in 2022 about the same as the year before sources tell CTV News Staffing could be one issue with so few border guards tasked to
checking outgoing containers that's something as simple as a vacation can create a gap in enforcement the answer to this is really a collaboration working together and a focus on on a priority to make it harder for these vehicles to leave the country authorities trying to seize more cars like this one on route to Canadian ports a better option because once it leaves Canada it's very hard to get it back John Woodward CTV News

@markusmuller6173

Organized crime on this scale cannot take place without the involvement of officials.

@stevenking3286

Sounds like someone's looking the other way at the port of Montreal. Nobody checks these containers before loading?

@TheFabrice1992

How can something as big as a truck or SUV be so easilly shipped out of the country without being checked by the border agency. I mean it's not like someone put them in a pocket and leaves Canada. I mean why is the CBSA able to scan and check outgoing luggages in airports and other points of entry but they can't check containers for stolen cars? Relying on insurance to pay for stolen cars is not a solution because it will drive up the insurance price for everyone

@Shadowjedi007

Can't they check WHO shipped and WHO received these shipments? Jeez how hard is this case to solve? Ridiculous.

@yousefal-assaf2985

Unbelievable how such a thing is still not considered a top priority by the officials. How much are they getting paid?!!

@Shurikmuff

In canada, you cannot protect yourself, you family or your property. If you hurt a thief or someone who tries to hurt you or family in your own home, you will be charged. Worst part, if you know who stole your vehicle, you know where is it located, you cannot retrieve it, and the police wont retrieve it for you as well. Warrant is also not easy to get. Basically, we live in a country where you can pretend being safe and have rights

@marko-X1

Wow. It seems like Canadian police is so polite they will even say sorry to you if they catch you stealing cars.

@abyranni2565

Most or all of these stolen vehicles go through Montreal port and this is the only place authorities can put a break on this heinous crime. However, authorities are not interested to stop this because someone, somewhere is making money, a lot of money.

@lenadahling

Is the government on top of anything?

@Themiddleman416

This current federal government is USELESS

@pierre-rose7783

The more I pay for a vehicle, the more I have to worry about it !

@samaa5660

Just last week, April 28. 2023 / 3 of my friends got their vehicles stolen all Dodge RAM 2022...The theft took place at 3:15 am however the poor policeman came at the 11:30 am to do the reporting He did not bother asking about the content inside the stolen cars. It is really a disgusting and degenerate thing!

@smeefamily54

So why are the shipping containers not scanned BEFORE they go onto the ships or get entry into the shipping yards????

@lutomson3496

someone at the port is being paid off probably more then 1 person including customs

@BorisTerekidi

Some officials are clearly on this (getting a kickback from the thieves). We only have a handful of ports that allow containers like that (with vehicles) to be shipped out. Why can't there be more control, verification, etc?

@andreveers2483

Meanwhile CBSA tears people’s cars apart if you don’t declare a pack of smokes. Wow.

@GrandmasterFU666

I'm so glad that our ports are doing such a great job!

@ketanpurohitcanada

Can we legally install something in the car which will seriously hurt the person while stealing the car? This will definitely stop the theft right at the starting point.

@Fabulousprofound168

This has been going on forever. Back in 2005-ish I was into Subarus and I recall someone’s brand new STI being stolen. The police in Quebec found it chopped in two hidden in a container mislabeled as something else. It still had its licence plates on it. I think it was waiting to be shipped to Eastern Europe

@timshelby2324

That's aboot 100 vehicles stolen a day in just Toronto eh ?
