on a cold overcast Saturday in October hundreds of students made their Mark at the 2023 West Virginia marching band Invitational Championship which includes the third annual Governor's Cup this year's competition was held at Philip Barbera high school and there were $51,000 worth of cash and prizes today 12 News Barbara Ron has the story God only made football so we could have a halftime show this marching band competition doesn't see a regular band playing on a field but performers putting on a
dazzling show including instrumental soloists and dancers all wrapped in one our show last year we did a swing show and they paired us together and we did so well that they were like who we're going to center it around you guys this competition is equivalent to a sports state championship here there are multiple judges walking around the field jotting down notes and scoring the bands based on their music music effect marching and much more for a chance to win it all on Saturday 33 high schools
across the state have been re rehearsing their music dancing and marching since July students don't just participate for the competition but for the chance to grow as an individual and play along those they consider their family I didn't really think I'd make that much of a close connection with all of these people but over the past 3 years it's been fantastic and it just gives me another creative Outlet in which I can just be myself West Virginia Department of Arts culture and history curator R
andall Reed Smith says it's important to carry on West Virginia's marching band traditions and the importance of this art form as a whole and I always say that the Arts are the only pure academic everything like you know science English math that's all purely an elective because the Arts are infused in those subjects and so it's important because there's nothing that brings more Community Pride to any Community than their band reporting from philippy for 12 news I'm Barbara Ron
