#5 "Open Shut Them, Open Shut Them": Hand Action Songs for Motor Planning, Pediatric Therapy

In these videos, my co-instructor, Charis, and I teach simple action songs with hand movements to help encourage motor planning. As a physical therapist, I have rated the common childhood songs/hand games and sequenced them in order of difficulty. We start with "This is the Way We..." and work to more and more difficult finger play action songs. I talk about the developmental sequence of these songs and then my 3.5 year old Charis and I give you a spirited performance! Since these videos are presented in progressive order of difficulty, it may be helpful to watch them in order. Pediatric Physical Therapy Exercises

Hello! My name is Amy Sturkey. I'm a pediatric physical therapist with about 30 years of clinical practice. I'm here with my co-instructor, Charis, who has three and a half years of being a kid--very qualified to help me out today. We are doing hand games today to work on motor planning. So I found that if you can add music into your motor planning activities that you have an easier time doing the motions, because I think it uses that music part of your brain to add it in to be it a little bit e
asier. So, we are working progressively up through easier to harder songs, and the next game is "Open, Shut Them and Open, Shut Them. I like it because although it has a lot of movements, the song tells you exactly what to do all along the way, which helps me too. So are you ready? Here, let's put your feet out here where we can see, because we're going to need those toes. All right? Ready? "Open shut them, open shut them. Give a little clap, clap, clap. Open shut them, open shut them, put them
in your lap, lap, lap. Walk them, walk them, walk them, walk them, right down to your toes, toes, toes. Fly them, fly them, fly them, fly them, pop them on your nose." Oh my! "Open shut them. Open shut them. Give a little clap, clap, clap. Open shut them. Open shut them. Put them in your lap, lap, lap. Creep them, crawl them, creep them, crawl them, right up to your chin, chin, chin. Open up your little mouth, but do not put them in!" Ahhhhhhh! That was so fun, Charis. So it's a great way to wor
k on motor planning. Again the song is good because it tells you what to do all the way, though it does have a lot of movements, so it is a little bit trickier, but easier on the side of some of the songs. Anyway, I hope this is helpful for you, and we'll look forward to seeing you next time. Thanks a lot! Bye-bye.
