hi everyone I'm Beck today I'm talking about a study that explored the social participation experiences of families raising a young child with autism this in this study the researchers interviewed seven families about their accounts of social participation in the community that is opportunities that promote social interactions with others to understand what families experienced and how they experienced it the experiences of these families were summarized into three themes the struggle it's to fe
el like you belong and what we have to do families reported difficulties meeting societal expectations in social activities some families stopped going to social activities because of the disconnect between their child's needs and the environment the struggle also captured the physical and mental energy required by parents to socially participate in the community additionally families felt isolated as people outside of the family did not understand autism or their struggle to participate althoug
h families reported at least one one instance of feeling they belonged typically in environments that match their child's skills such as at parks or in indoor play centers families felt more accepted by core groups than in the general Community reporting they felt more accepted while in the community with extended family or friends who were aware of their child's diagnosis finally families also reported feeling they had to provide experiences outside of the home for their child even though it co
uld be difficult families reported strategically planning and evaluating the environment for their child and doing things differently for their family this study highlights family's strong desire for social participation and the challenges in the environment that can limit Family Social participation the impact of societal expectations on families highlights the importance of societal understanding of autism additionally this study identified the importance of supportive environments encounterin
