The Royal Children's Hospital Melbourne

Hi my name is Adam. Yesterday I went to the  Royal Children's Hospital. I needed to have a nuclear medicine kidney scan. This is a  way of taking some pictures that show how my kidneys are working. When we arrived,  we went straight to the Medical Imaging Department on the lower ground floor. The  receptionist told us where to find Nuclear Medicine. We waited in the waiting area until  the technologist, Ellie, came out to see us. With these pictures I have to have some medicine.  The medicine ne
eds to go through a tiny plastic tube into one of my veins. Ellie shows me a  special device called Coolsense. She let me try it and it made my skin feel cool. But when  she took it off my skin felt numb. Numb means I couldn't feel very much where the Coolsense  had been. This made getting the straw more comfortable. While Ellie put the tiny straw  into my hand I looked at an I Spy book with Dad and kept my arm still. Then it was time for my  pictures to be taken. We went into the room with the
special camera. Dad helped me get comfortable  on the bed. Ellie also put some seat belts around me to keep me safe. She showed Dad and I how the  nuclear medicine camera works. The cameras are in the two big square parts of the machine. They  came near my body to take the pictures. They move slowly and didn't touch me at all. Then Ellie  put the special medicine into the tiny straw. During the scan I watch a show on the screen.  I kept my hands down beside me and kept still. These help my pictu
res come out clearly.  Dad stayed with me the whole time. Felicity, another technologist, watched the pictures of  my kidneys on her monitor. My kidney's job is to clean my blood. The medicine went into my blood  and helped the camera sure how well my kidneys are working. Ellie took out the little straw then I  could get up. After that it was time to go home. Bye.
