we all know from star trek that space is the final frontier and in 2021 we saw a big jump in space exploration now if you want to get closer to the stars you can see a new exhibit in metro detroit that will take you on a journey to our future this is all happening at the cranbrook institute of science and joining us to share more about the exhibit is michael narlock head of astronomy thank you so much for being with us oh you're welcome well the exhibit is called space a journey to our future te
ll us about it well the exhibit really is sort of a journey it looks uh in the past at the apollo missions which i'm sort of standing in that gallery right now uh the apollo missions of course were the final mission that took us uh to the moon and there's plenty of artifacts in this particular piece of the exhibit but perhaps the best part of this exhibit is an actual piece of the moon which we can show you right over here to my right wow so can you show some of what people will see there absolu
tely uh there's artifacts all all about the apollo missions that's sort of our look at the past of space exploration and it ends uh over here with an actual piece of the moon that was brought back by apollo 15. wow that's kind of that's amazing that's amazing now you say that the exhibit is also hands-on how is it interactive because that sounds so cool to me well one of the areas where it's really interactive is where we explore space exploration today and primarily today that our exploration o
f space has to do with uh space telescopes like the james webb space telescope was just launched not too long ago many of our hands-on interactives uh deal with how the telescopes see what they see what wavelengths of light that they're actually seeing in so you're you're able to take a look at everyday objects through infrared and ultraviolet and of course the visible portion of the light spectrum oh wow well now as an astronomer what do you see as the next big step in space exploration well i'
m glad you asked because this exhibit also looks at what the future could hold and i think the future is taking human beings and taking them to another world to live whether that world is the moon or or mars how will we do that how will we exist on another world and one of the pieces of this exhibit actually recreates a module that you might live in if you were on another planet you can go right over here and take a look at it that's very cool so another way to be super interactive with this exh
ibit absolutely absolutely where where you're going to sleep where you're going to do your work this is a a theoretical mock-up of what your home could be like if you say live down the road yeah i think i kind of like it nice lighting yes great mood lighting very very cool so how can people come and see the exhibit for themselves well you come to the cranbrook institute of science and depending on whether or not you're a member of the institute or a member of one of our sister institutions or ju
st part of the general public you get a ticket and you're free to come and wander the entire museum which includes this particular exhibit well this all looks very very cool very cool mood lighting as well and it's interactive thank you so much for being with us today thank you
