(PROTESTERS CHANTING) SPEAKER: He's one of the most important living artists in our lifetime. SPEAKER 2: The world had never seen anything like this. REPORTER: The end of Iran's monarchy came early today. NICKY NODJOUMI: We fought for democracy. We have the right to criticize the government. SPEAKER: He can't even process the news wit
hout making art about it. NODJOUMI: A friend of mine said, "Get out of the country, and right away." SPEAKER 3: He was lucky to have got out. They would have killed him. SPEAKER 4: (SPEAKING FOREIGN LANGUAGE) SPEAKER 5: SPEAKER 6: You were the head of the museum. SPEAKER 7: Right. NODJOUMI: Do you remember what happened to these paintings? Uh, I don't know. I have no idea. When he says he doesn't remember, do you believe that? I don't know. SPEAKER 3: Nikzad was always a revolutionary. I was
targeted, beaten up, stabbed with a bayonet. SPEAKER: His art is threatening to people. It's threatening to the Iranian establishment. It's also threatening to people in the west. SPEAKER 6: That exhibition changed our life forever. They are holding a gun, and, um, suggesting that it's time to get armed. SPEAKER: It's just a big chunk of his life that's disappeared.
