letters and remembrances New York Times best-selling author and Newberry winner Kwame Alexander shares a moving self-portrait of a a growing man navigating love learning from his parents exploring his own relationships and reflecting on his past to better understand his daughters and himself joining us now is call me Alexander so good to have you sir we do appreciate it and happy early Father's Day to you it's great to be here thank you so much right off the bat what inspired you to write your
Memoir as this blend of love poems recipes letters and remembrances you know I think of it sort of like parenting at any given time you're making dinner you're helping with homework you're answering the phone you're sort of juggling all these different things and as I've been wrestling with trying to understand my role as a father trying to be a good dad a better dad my role as a son trying to ask questions to my father that I've been so afraid to ask it just felt like the the right way to to ap
proach you know this sort of identity Journey that I'm on it's also a great way to read too because it's it's it's not a long story it's not the same thing page after page I find myself flipping through catching the the title of something and reading it um in part you write I am the father of two daughters I have walked in the joy of their golden feet and sometimes stumbled off the mountain of their precious Hearts which is really beautiful way to say it how important was it for you to share not
only the highlights of fatherhood but as we all know there are also some tough moments too and sometimes they go hand in hand together look parenting is the hardest thing I've ever done and I know looking back on my childhood I got so many questions I've been so judgmental on my own parents and I know that in a few years my daughter is going to be judgmental you know towards me they're gonna look at me and begin to try to unravel why didn't our dad do this how did he love you know when I think
about divorce and you know my my two the two the two women who I loved and who loved me I want to change the narrative for my kids so that when when they get older they can look back and say well it wasn't just about the thing that ended the marriage it was about some Joys some love some hope some dreams coming true that they built together so I kind of want to change the narrative for my daughter so they have a better understanding of how their father loved and how he loves hey you mentioned yo
ur own dad the Memoir delves into the ups and downs of your own relationship with your father what impact has that and it sounds like I'm sounding like a therapist here I'm sorry what impact has that had on uh on your relationship with your dad writing all of this look you're a son so I'm sure you get it it's it's it's a constant journey in trying to understand the woes and wonders of of of having a father and and and and dealing with that and the beautiful thing that I've learned from writing t
his book you know one of the things I complained about was I never heard my dad say I love you like I never heard him say it in all my years and I wrote about that I talked about that in interviews and one day I got a random text from my father who's learned how to use the iPad with with his emojis and everything and he randomly says my parents never said I loved you to me and he said I knew they loved me because when I was in the Air Force at Ellsworth Air Force Base 2500 miles away my mother w
rote me a letter every day my father never wrote me but I knew that he loved me because he was the one who went and bought the stamps and mailed the letters for her so we sort of learned how to parent from our from our parents and he learned how to parent from his father from his all the time now yeah I decided to extend a little bit of Grace because I want my kids to do that for me oh absolutely we all should be so lucky um I love your writing style this isn't really a question I just want to r
ead something that I have here that I thought was so beautiful and the way you did it it's it's from without you uh and you write um I don't know what you're writing about who you're writing about but you're right I am lost as in isolated unfinished broken off Shipwrecked on the shore of solitude ankle deep impossibility I have read the dictionary twice and I still and still there are no words to fill in the blank spaces what a beautiful way to say that and what a beautiful reading oh that was e
xcellent look in in September of 2017 my mother passed away um a few months later I started you know seeing the cracks in my marriage um and and just some familial uh challenges that were taking place at the same time that my career was sort of taking off and I just but I couldn't sleep and I didn't know what was going on and so I had to sort of take a step back and look at my personal life and what was going on and what I was missing and what I was longing for and I think that poem you know com
es out of that feeling yeah I just love when you say I have I I've read the dictionary and then there's that big space and you say twice um it's just very clever you're look you're a New York Times bestseller for a reason this this this book is great I'm wondering just lastly what what do you hope uh people take away from why Father's cry at night you know we live in this space of just this toxic um you know this crisis in masculinity and how important it is for for men in particular to be vulne
rable to share to be open I haven't been that person for so long and I realize it hasn't served me in my relationships here's what I believe vulnerability breeds authenticity authenticity creates a healthier relationship to ourselves to the people who love us and to the people we love and that's where I want to be and I hope that's something that readers can get can Glimpse from this this book yeah well I can't write that fast enough I'm gonna have to play it back that was really good um Kwame t
hank you so much this this this book is is fantastic it's really introspective in a way that yeah not a lot of people are white fathers cry at night a memoir and love poems recipes letters and remembrances is out now wherever books are sold thank you sir Happy Father's Day thank you her music is Iconic for decades Mary J Blige has poured her personal experiences right into her records now those Intimate Songs have inspired films real love and strength of A Woman Original Movies airing on Lifetim
e are giving us a deeper understanding of Mary J I sat down with the queen of Hip-Hop soul and the two stars of the movies she is executive producing to talk about bringing her lyrics to life get the love story about if I can't have you nobody will I Know What You Did sometimes being strong isn't forcing something to be right it's triumphant I call it a miracle because it seems like when you're in it and you're going through it it's like you're never gonna get out of it and when you find yoursel
f finding the love for yourself and getting it and finding that that's that's the answer to all the questions she needs no introduction from her hits like I'm going down to real love [Music] Mary J Blige the queen of Hip-Hop soul sharing the journey from the bottom up in her lyrics and in her new films I just couldn't believe it because the darkness that I felt on the My Life album and and even writing the song my life was dark for me but it was light in marriage for someone else and even writin
g real love was happiness and people getting through college and I'm coming out of the projects and going through hell and trying to survive and that's what it was for me so it's it's just weird it's weird but you have to accept what it is for everyone it what it is for you what it is for you what it is for me it is for me and see what I must give you some sense of Pride that an album or a song that you've written takes people through a dark time in their life too yeah it takes some a lot of peo
ple through it through Dark Times a lot of people are relative to it because it they've been going through hell as well but when I hear the stories that people got married you know to my life it's like yo you are you serious the my life album really did this for you because in my life album I was ready to slip my own wrist throat take pills whatever you know it took now all of that pain and darkness have influenced two original movies real love and strength of a woman inspired by two of her bigg
est hits usually you're telling a story and you've done videos but I'm wondering what was this like bringing a story a song that's been around for this amount of time to life in a film rather than a short video and it was it was a lot and a little emotional for me because they both represent real times in my life in real you know events you know not the actual event that's taking place in these in these films but from places that I've come from to where I've evolved from uh so what's new oh sinc
e 14 years ago everything strength of a woman is the strength that I found when I found the love for myself and so that and all the stuff is relative to Kendra and and her character and and how she's evolved and I'm sorry for you know getting on psycho and you and Connie um I'm sure she's great are you now this is my first leading role and to have the opportunity was definitely a blessing because it's something I've been working at for 10 years now it allowed me to show range from being young an
d vulnerable to you know being a woman and knowing yourself more but also going through the Journey of life you tackle some really heavy topics in this um you know there's the the sexual violence in the first one there's infidelity in the second one there's a little bit of addiction uh in in real love as well what was it like for you as an actress as an actor as a woman to film a scene like that it took a lot of preparation you know mentally physically and for me knowing that you know I'm in a p
osition to be a voice for people who were victims and still to this day haven't even been able to speak to anyone about it is what was very important to me when I hear stories like that in real life with people that I know like it it for sure like makes me really mad and angry to the point that I can't even articulate myself and it's just it's it Brute Force at that point you know so it was definitely um it was definitely like triggering you know because I've known people that have went through
that how Hands-On were you um just during the whole process all the way Hands-On from reading the scripts to picking picking these two out from you know me like my production company and I picking the directors the writer the writers the everybody when you watch them act these scenes out that are basically from your life from your songs what is it that you hope putting these two movies out there people who watch them will get from them first of all that love you know love and relationships matte
r real life people have real lives and real situations and real things going on and it's not just all you know romance it's people having to take other people and and take them as they are and if in a relationship you know and love them through whatever they're going through and you can watch Mary J blige's strength of a woman the second part this Saturday on Lifetime that's our show for tonight I'm Phil Lipoff ABC News live is here for you all night with the latest news context and Analysis you
