well he's a comedy icon and has a cold following among sci-fi and horror fans today we are welcoming actor Michael Gross to the morning mix thank you it's nice to be here with my two newest cult followers oh absolutely we are part of it yeah new besties comedy icon is overstating no it's not it's not seriously oh well we want to talk about why you're in town because you're being honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Boston comedy Music Festival so what's that like what does it mean to
you well first of it means that my life is over this is this is the lifetime he's like well he's not going to do anything else for the rest let's award him now no in his last few days and uh I'm I'm thrilled to be here it's the it's the Boston Comedy Festival and along with March Madness and pizza madness it's a great going to be a great weekend and the festival's been on for days it is a competition between a lot of um uh standup comedians and uh and I don't know why they asked me here uh beca
use well I'm odd okay I don't know that I'm funny but uh my um I owe most of my comedy success to great writers you know a lot of these people the stand-ups write their own stuff I am I am oh oh My Success to wonderful writers on Family Ties Tremors all those other things the the wonderful shows have been on I give them all the credit seriously all the honor I I have the greatest respect for good writers that's really nice of you and speaking of Family Ties you're probably best known for your ro
le as Stephen Keaton on Family Ties and that show really defined 80s sitcom comedy what was it like having starred in such a beloved show uh again I you know I think I took it for granted when I was on it um it was it was my work and I enjoyed it I what I constantly hear now even even now is how much people appreciated what a great family it was uh I think it was because come on I hate to say this but a lot of families weren't didn't operate as well there was a lot there's a lot of dysfunction i
n families in general I come from one of them right I know this same noty we we own has a normal family exactly own we own our dysfunction and uh so this was uh was again wonderful writing wonderful it's a great bunch of people I'm still very much in touch with uh with Meredith Baxter who played my wife on that and she and in fact are doing a benefit at a theater in Santa Fe New Mexico in about two weeks oh that's so fun you guys have the same birthday right fact and we never get a card from you
and yet you know that you know what next year next year mail right I promise yeah she's so rude I know I know she doesn't care it's like Undead to her she only cares about herself terrible I do now I promise um another role people love is survivalist B Gummer and Tremors uh we got to we got to talk about ber the gift that keeps giving uh that was very fortunate uh for me because I was um I found myself in as in the character of Bert Gummer the day after the Family Ties rap party after seven yea
rs and that to have someone trust me with a role so radically different right-wing survivalist uh paranoid obsessive compulsive disordered not at all like me and U and it's there have been seven films now yes and in fact uh later this year there will be an all Tremors film festival in Santa Fe New Mexico hosted by George RR Martin the creator of Game of Thrones who as it turns out is a huge Tremors fan that's amazing that's exciting but listen we're here for the The Comedy Festival and that you
guys to see it's going to be the we're Saturday night we'll be at the Berkeley performance center I think it's at 8:00 but you can find tickets on tonight at the City Winery there's a again uh there are all these um competitions of all these stand up comedians getting up there and I don't know how they do it whether it's by Applause or who the side the winners are who the judges are but the finalist will be at um at the Berkeley performance center Saturday night and that that's when I'll be ther
