-Welcome back to the show. -It's good to be back. -I always love having you here. I can't wait to talk about all the stuff that you have going on. I thought it was interesting because last time I think you were here, we were talking about your romantic comedy, "Somebody I Used to Know." -Yes. -Congratulations on that, by the way. It was great. -Thank you. -And then you're talking about that. We were talking about -- -One person. [ Laughter ] [ Cheers and applause ] Thank you! My sister is in the
audience. -We always invite her to all the shows. [ Laughter ] Your sister comes to all your shows and claps for you, yeah. -She's that one clap. -Yeah. But we were talking about your favorite romantic comedies, and you were saying "The American President." -I have to tell you that last year I said that so many times because it's not just my favorite rom-com, it's my favorite movie of all time. And of course, it stars Annette Bening. -Yeah. -I just said her name 30 times. [ Cheers and applause
] And then I got to work with her in this show, "Apples Never Fall." -Now she's your co-star. -She's my co-star. -Did you make that happen? -I fully manifested, I think, by doing a press tour and saying her name 15 times a day and then getting a phone call one night being like, "This show just came in. It stars Annette Bening." And I was like, "Say less." Like "I'm in." -"Say less. I'm so in." And did you -- You got to be cool with her on set. Like, you're not a super fan, right? -It's true. I w
anted to be sort of cool. I didn't want to, like, come in with the questions really hot. She knew I was a fan of the movie. -Okay. -So I tried to pepper them in and, you know, it's like people are talking about politics. I'd be like, "Oh, presidential race for the Am-American president?" [ Laughter ] "Speaking of, like, what was it like to work with Rob Reiner and Mike Douglas?" [ Laughter ] Just sort of worked it in. I think I played it pretty cool. -Yeah, I think. Do you ever not play it cool?
-Most of the time I don't play it cool. I would say every other time though. -Why though? You're really cool. -I get so -- Oh, you think I'm cool? -Of course you're very good. -You guys. [ Cheers and applause ] -Come on. Oh, my God. You're so funny. -Stop. -You are so funny. -Most of the time when I meet people, I really freak out. Most notably, recently, I met Frances McDormand. -Ooh! -It's right up -- It's like Annette Bening, Frances McDormand, part of, like, the Fab Four for me with, like,
Holly Hunter, Sigourney Weaver. It's like... -Oh, yeah! -And it was -- it was kind of -- it was right when she was winning every award for "Three Billboards." And I was at the SAG Awards, and my husband and I, we knew some people at the "Three Billboards" table. So we were over there talking to them, and I had heard through the grapevine some of the people -- I was there for my show "Glow." -That's right. -Which was on at the time. [ Cheers and applause ] Thank you. And so I'd heard through the
grapevine some people had met Frances McDormand. She was a fan of "Glow." I was kind of like hoping to meet her, I think. So we mosey on over to the "Three Billboards" table. Lo and behold, I turn around, there's Frances McDormand, and she looks at me and she goes, "You!" Like a very complimentary "you," and I'm floored. And I look at her and I go, "You!" And then she goes, "No, you." And then I go, "No, you!" And you know when you can feel a bit turning, but you've overcommitted. Like, she kind
of looks at me and it's like, "You." And I'm like, "Little did you know you!" [ Laughter ] -Oh, no. -And eventually I feel like she just sort of walked away and I was like, "I'm a huge fan. I love you, I love you, your work." So I regret -- -Oh, my gosh. -I regret the interaction. I doubt she remembers it at all. -Your face is turning red right now. -I'm really blushing. -Oh, my gosh, that really happened? -It really happened. But I'm hoping if I talk about her enough that, like Annette, I'll m
anifest my next job with Frances. -Frances McDormand. [ Cheers and applause ] -Put it out there. -I think Alison Brie, you guys will work well together. -She's much cooler than she comes off. -She is super duper cool. Oh, my gosh. Let's talk about "Apples Never Fall." I mean, all seven episodes are available now on Peacock. It's a big hit. Can you set it up for everyone? -It's based on a book by Liane Moriarty. She wrote "Big Little Lies" and "Nine Perfect Strangers." -Whoo! [ Cheers and applaus
e ] -Basically, when our mother goes missing, a family is in turmoil. The four adult children, you know, turn on each other. They turn on their father. Nobody knows who did it, who's responsible, what has happened. -Ooh! I want to show a clip. Here's Alison Brie in "Apples Never Fall." Take a look at this. -I made a video, posted it on my socials. It's too important to me. So here's what I'm offering -- $50,000 to anyone who gives us information that helps us find my mom. -Okay. Great. Okay, but
you don't have $50,000. So when you say "you're" offering $50,000... -Remember when you let me borrow your credit card for emergencies? -What I remember is that I let you borrow it one time, and you memorized the number. -Think of it as penance for the whole [bleep] your boss's wife thing. -What can I get you? -Hi. Can I do, um, a matcha latte? -Yeah. -And what? Coffee, black? -Do you serve alcohol? -Espresso. -[ Laughs ] "Do you serve alcohol?" [ Cheers and applause ] You were fantastic in thi
s series. Congrats on all the great reviews. You've had many different types of roles in your career. Do you ever do an audition where you just go like, [Inhales sharply] "That one I didn't get"? -Definitely I have. I mean, there are early auditions. There's one early audition very early in my career that haunts me to this day. I think it's the worst audition I've ever had. -Why? -Well, it involved singing. It was for a musical. This was years ago. I was right out of college and it was for this
musical "Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson." You know, it was a new musical at the time. It was described as a rock 'n' roll musical. I was at just out of college. I was doing a lot of late-night drunken karaoke and fancied myself quite the singer. -Yeah. -There is a false sense of confidence that comes with late-night drunken karaoke. I don't know if you know this. -Yeah, I do unfortunately. Yeah. -So I got this audition for this "rock musical." It's a rock n roll musical. And I thought, "Oh, great,
I got this." I have, like, this song I've been doing basically every Saturday night Pat Benatar's "Heartbreaker." -Oh, yeah! [ Cheers and applause ] -So [Laughs] I do no preparation at all, just a very cocky attitude to go in. I rehearsed in my car on the way over, singing along to Pat Benatar. This was my second mistake. I think singing along sort of makes you think, you know, that the singer's voice is your own. -Yeah, you go, "Wait, I sound great. I sound like Pat Benatar." -"I sound amazing
." -Oh, that is Pat Benatar. Yeah. -Yeah, but I didn't make that connection. So I get there and I'm sitting outside. Now I'm in the waiting room and the walls are paper thin. And I had thought rock 'n' roll musical, everyone's going to be singing rock. This is chill. And basically you can hear every person through the wall and it's Broadway l-- It's ♪ Think of me, think of me fondly ♪ You know, it's ♪ Tomorrow ♪ And I'm just out there like -- this is when I start sweating and start realizing may

He's like, "Hey, Alison, Oh, 'Heartbreaker'! It's going to be awesome!" I was so nervous. He launches in, I get two bars in and I just go to a 10 and I just basically -- I amped up too hard, too fast. I couldn't hit a note. I was literally screaming at these poor people I was auditioning for. We were meant to do two verses, tw
o choruses. At the break in the middle, I had just enough time to take a breath and literally mouth to the people that I was auditioning for, "I'm sorry." And then launched right in. -Oh, no! -Launched right into the next verse. I could have stopped, but I powered through two verses. They were not happy, and I have not been asked to audition for those people ever again. -Oh! [ Applause ] -I have to tell you -- Thank you. You know, if I were to do it again, knowing what I know now, and you can ki
