d to Kelvin Vickers the convicted killer of RPD officer Anthony maertz and two other men in court this afternoon 21-year-old Raheem Robinson was found guilty on all counts for the murders of 19-year-old Mel Rand and 25-year-old Richard King prosecutors say in the summer of 2022 Robinson Kelvin Vickers and dedric fwey were all involved D in a triple shooting that killed King and Rand the third victim survived prosecutors say this will hopefully bring some long- awaited closure for those involved

ized by rpd's bomb squad seleno was arraigned in Rochester city court this morning FBI officials say additional charges may be filed here a recent vote by rcs's Board of Education to end a nearly decade long partnership between East High and uvar has staffed there wondering how they'll maintain notable improvements Gio baglia talked with those involved in the partnership about the next steps here he joins us now in studio with more Gio Adam Kyle Crandle has been with East High School for more th
an 20 years and said the partnership between the U ofr and East High was key in the success of many students now amidst a busy week of announcements from rcsd he says plans seem to be in limbo and hopes next steps will be established soon we just feel right now as though the rug is being pulled out from underneath us and who's going to suffer um the members of the Board of Education are not going to suffer who's going to suffer our students and our families since 2015 East High School has been r
un by the University of Rochester the partnership between the university and East High introduced an extra hour to the school day allowing for students to receive the amount of literacy and math they needed without sacrificing electives such as PE and music kids get frustrated that leads to a higher dropout rate this is really the best example of what a community school model is anything that kids need that they may not be able to get at home we have provided for them here Crandle says he was ho
ping the partnership would be something other schools would see and learn from not be taken away as it was an example of a school getting out of receivership versus closing the school and starting from scratch the Board of Education seemingly is putting all the hard work that we've had at risk of being able to continue Mary coffee co-chair of the northw and Village Association says her organization was a key part in establishing this partnership and is shocked and worried about it ending why wou
ld you take it away you know do you know we have the highest child poverty rate in the nation and the first step out of poverty is a good education both Crandle and coffee talk about how they hope to continue seeing students succeed at East High we're going to just have to stay on it we go to I don't know but we're not going to let go there needs to be a plan and since the board has ended the plan that is working uh we need to see immediately what the plan is going to be to sustain the success t

ric we'll see you in just a minute meanwhile Thomas High School student athlete Austin Tores childhood could be described as normal that was until about 6 months ago when his entire life was turned upside down our Carl Jones has this story for us here in Webster Austin tor's childhood was filled with sports lacrosse track wrestling you name a sport he probably played it but there was something different about soccer we enjoy watching him play sports and you know the smile on his face just being
with his teammates and all that was great but last September that normal childhood began to fade I went to school and I was extremely tired like I almost fell asleep sitting in my chair and then the night I just couldn't sleep I whenever I try to breath through my nose I couldn't get air in so I to breath out my mouth the next day things got worse and he was rushed to the ER it was you know it was Unreal I you know um we didn't know what the heck was going on and why that was going on but when t
hey were hooking up with all sorts of IVs and stuff we were breathless at 16 years old Austin was diagnosed with stage five kidney failure an unexpected turn for an otherwise healthy teenage was just stumped I couldn't believe that all this had happened spend in such a short amount of time playing the role of protector his parents felt they came up short well you kind of thought that you could you know you could protect your kids you know from from everything but it's just uh you know feel like
a failure you know we feel them Austin is on dialysis and gets treatment three times a week yet his parents said Austin's the one who's been the rock of the family through it all his strength and his drive to do what is needed to to get to the next step there's no words you can put him Austin needs a kidney transplant and his parents are hopeful that everything will work out so that their son will get the chance to live his new normal reporting from Strong Memorial Hospital I'm Carl Jones I see
