da compagnia in Italia sono molto importanti: il 4
2% degli italiani ne ha uno, e fiumi di
denaro vengono spesi dal veterinario; infine, nel 2022 la protezione degli animali
è stata inserita nella nostra Costituzione! Com’è nel tuo paese? What about your country?

and expressions related to pets. We’ll start with the expression animale
da compagnia, which literally means an animal that keeps company. Actually, Italians are
using the English word pet more and more often, especially in online newspapers, advertising
and magazines. Sometimes we overuse it: instead of saying cibo per animali
many companies now say ... pet food. But you want to learn Italian, right?
Il cibo per animali può essere secco o umido,
it can be dry or wet. Il cibo secco sono le crocchette, kibble.
Esistono molte varietà di crocchette per cani o gatti, there are many varieties
of kibble for cats and dogs. L’alimentazione con le crocchette presenta vantaggi e svantaggi, feeding kibble food has advantages and disadvantages. Se non sei sicuro che le crocchette debbano
far parte della dieta del tuo animale, chiedi al tuo veterinario, if you are not sure whether
kibble should be a part
of your pet’s diet, ask your veterinarian.
What do you call a dog bowl? Ciotola. Vediamo, anch’io ho qui delle crocchette,
queste son crocchette normali, di una marca molto diffusa; I also have some kibble here,
this is normal kibble from a popular brand; questo sacchetto costa 3 euro; invece queste
sono crocchette speciali, per gatti che soffrono di allergie, e costano molto, molto di più,
these, instead, are special kibble, for cats with allergies, and they cost much, much more.
Ora vediamo i
l cibo umido, ecco qui: cibo per gatti in scatolette, tins o in buste,
pouches, ci sono vari gusti, they come in different flavours. I miei gatti amano molto
anche questi premi, treats: sono ottimi per dargli le medicine
they are great for giving them medicine! Cos’altro puoi comprare in un negozio per
animali? What else can you buy in a pet shop? Giochi! Toys! Giochi per gatti e per cani!
Io ne ho molti! Cioè, i miei gatti ne hanno molti. Infine, se hai un gatto ti serve la lettiera, agglomeran
te o assorbente, if you have a cat, you need
litter, either clumping or absorbent. The word lettiera can indicate both the litter
and the litter-box. We sometimes call the litter simply sabbia, sand. I hope your four-legged friend, il tuo amico
a quattro zampe, is never sick, but if you need a vet, here are some useful phrases:
Ho bisogno di un veterinario. I need a vet. Mi può consigliare un veterinario?
Can you recommend a vet? Devo prendere un appuntamento?
Should I make an appointment? Il mi
o cane/gatto ha un'assicurazione.
My dog/cat has insurance. And now some common symptoms or issues:
Il mio gatto ha una dermatosi, quale cibo mi consiglia? My cat has dermatosis,
what food do you recommend? Il mio cane ha una zecca. My dog has a tick. Il mio cane sta male,
forse ha mangiato qualcosa che non va. My dog is sick, maybe he ate something wrong. Il mio gatto vomita e non beve.
My cat vomits and does not drink. Il mio gatto ha un problema ai denti.
My cat has a tooth problem. Alla fine
della visita, il veterinario può
ordinare una medicina; after the vet has finished their examination, they can order a medicine.
Ti farà la ricetta e ti spiegherà dove ritirare il farmaco, magari nella farmacia più vicina,
they will give you a prescription and explain where to pick up the medicine,
perhaps at the nearest pharmacy. Other useful words and expressions: As I said before, I hope nothing ever happens
to your little friend, but if it does, Italy’s veterinary clinics offer advanced car

parlano di gatti, gioie e dolori! How old is Mia? Is she a cat or a dog?
And what is Diana’s problem? Mia is four months old and is a kitten,

At night she plays and bites Diana's feet! E ora parliamo di me: io ho cinque gatti, tutti con un caratte
re diverso. Sono tre femmine
e due maschi; la più vecchia si chiama Tina e ha 19 anni. Sta bene, però ha problemi
alle zampe posteriori e beve moltissimo. Il più piccolo si chiama Mimino
e ha circa 6 anni. Mimino è il più attivo di tutti, corre per tutta la casa e gioca con tutto; gli altri
