Are you a "bad" Cleveland Browns fan if you don't like Deshaun Watson?

Cleveland Browns fans are some of the most passionate in the world. Deshaun Watson, for reasons off-the-field, is disliked by many around the league, and in his new city. Does it make you a "bad" Browns fan if you don't support DW4, or can you separate the art from the artist? If you don't like Deshaun Watson does that make you a bad Cleveland Browns fan? which is kind of what led to this conversation I want to ask you guys about and like I said earlier G Bush was uh kind of the intended audience or one of the three intended audiences I wanted to ask but there are going to be some people who don't like DeShawn Watson for whatever reason does that make you a bad Browns fan if you don't like DeShawn Watson or I'll start with you does it make you a bad Browns fan if you don't like DeShawn Watson yes no it doesn't make you a bad Browns fan if you don
't like Watson but if you're a person that because you don't like DeShawn Watson you really kind of like root for him not to be successful that's what make you a bad Browns fan because ultimately deshun Watson success is tied into the Cleveland Browns team success and if you truly are a Die Hard fan of the Cleveland Browns and you want to see the Cleveland Browns win a Super Bowl then you going to have to get behind a guy that you might not like personally for your professional interest and that
's just the bottom line it ain't this ain't hard to figure out you can deal with people that you don't like for the greater good that we do that every day in America you better be able to De deal with you have to yeah so Jay what's your answer to that uh no I don't think it makes you a bad fan at all you know it's funny because I was thinking about when I found out at 9:38 I was coming on today I hurried up and grabbed the rundown I'm like well what are we talking about today because I don't loo
k at the rundown if I'm not on the show and when I saw this topic I the first thing actually I thought was I know many many people in my life who feel like I don't care about your political views I don't care about your religious views I want you to entertain me that's all I want you to do so if you think that way if you're the one of those people that think that way you probably also can't then say that you care about his off field stuff like it's all in the same bucket if you don't care about
their political beliefs then you probably shouldn't care about that and you fall into the category of I just want you to entertain me but I also know and I've heard from so many people that say I am a lifelong Brown fan and I feel emotionally detached from this team now I just can't get there I can't get there with I've heard I've heard that a lot too yeah and I don't I don't I don't blame you like you're you're entitled to that like it's I don't hold anyone against again like there's some rough
stuff there I have a question for you Mike did you ask this question because you thought G Bush would say yes you're a bad Browns fan if you don't like deshun Watson no I just know G comes at it from the most like innermost fan persp perspective absolutely so you know I am curious now to know what his answer would be cuz I thought when you said you put this in specifically for gbsh I thought you already had some inkling that gbsh was going to say yes no no I have no idea what his answer I just
know he comes from like when we were at the Super Bowl and he said I can't watch the Browns in the Super Bowl with anyone because I'm Gon Cry the whole time yeah I would like to talk to someone that said I don't know who they are or where you saw them it was I mean if you saw it on Twitter like here's a mistake we you know Twitter's saying well Twitter has never said anything well it was a back and forth on Twitter from a bunch of people I worth asking the question but so here's the other mistak
e that we make often times is say what's all over Twitter is it I'm guilty I'm not going to lie I'm go to see here's the thing what we see on Twitter is a very small section of what's on Twitter it's called algorithm absolutely and like we're seeing things that we have selectively it into yeah it's an echo chamber it is an echo chamber and the danger of society not just with sports fans but the danger of society and politicians have flamed out massively because they've looked at Twitter M and th
ey try to base the pulse of the country off the pulse of a few it can't be done so you know now look I love Twitter I got my current job because of Twitter the athletic hired me because of Twitter you're kidding no listen there are there are people that are working upstairs in the channel 3 Newsroom that are working because of their social media followers I ask both you a question sure uh and this is based off you know people you both said that people find it hard to be emotionally invested and
I'm just asking because at this time I was still just a casual fan I hadn't started this journey we all know what Kareem hunt did never mind what he was accused of well we saw it in his know what he did yeah was there that same sense when it when John dorsy went out and signed Kareem hunt there was backlash but not as much am I right yeah I think that's fair I yeah it's hard to gauge not there's a difference to Kem Hunt's from Cleveland right so there are a lot of people I think that were more w
illing to forgive him the point I'm making is everybody got a different moral compass everybody have different things that trigger right and so like to me you know my my man you don't put your hands on a woman never right you don't put your hands on no woman ccum I don't care what's what and it just seems like that people have been more triggered over allegations because of whatever versus I think it was a number of allegations that was troubling if it was one two or three women I think it would
have been fine when it was in the 20s I think there were people going oh no no I that's just too much for and so this is just me just asking this question because again moral compass I seen somebody that and I respect and I like Kareem hunt as a man and as a player but that's not cool you know what I'm saying that absolutely I got daughters bro under no circumstan is that cool and so I was just curious because you all were in the business like what was the temperature when the Cleveland Brown s
igned Kareem hunt there was push back there was push back remember he was for a minute black balled and he wasn't out for very long it's not like he was out long enough to learn any lessons or make any sort of but but then you can also look at Ray Rice now granted what Ray did was I mean the circumstances I took into account the circumstances around Kareem hunt these were women that were thrown out of his hotel room uh for parts of his group felt they had nefarious intentions the they came back
there was the altercation we saw that on videotape what I saw on videotape from Ray froze me in my tracks I'd never seen anything like that yeah I was literally like I needed a standing eight count I was taken aback because I'm with you I'm a girl dad laying hands on a female I I just I you wanted to go fight Ray R so and I knew and liked Ray Rice he had been a member he had been a a a guest on on our show on multiple occasions and he was strongly entrenched in the friends of show category we co
uld call Ray at any time Ry was polite he was courteous he was all these things the reason I personally was so thunder struck I knew Ry I thought I knew his character Ry was a ruers guy my son was at ruter at the time Cory had run-ins with not run-ins but interactions with r his Impressions were the same as mine I never heard any a negative word about Ray Rice and I see this video and I'm like everything I thought I knew is wrong yeah and I understand that things happen and spur the moments and
some of it spontaneous and out of your control I just for me that was the unforgivable sin with DeShawn I think there were people I know them in in my work Circle upstairs that were lifelong Browns fans that say they've now picked other teams they actively root for other teams they don't root against the Browns or they don't root against Deshawn but they've said I cannot root for this team I cannot cosign what this team has done okay that's your choice for me I do mental gymnastics my fandom is
so strong I cannot not root for the team that doesn't mean I have to root for the player but like you said if you root against that player then you're in competing factions so for me anybody that would ask that question I would answer that with another question does it make you a bad Browns fan if you didn't like Baker Mayfield it's got to go both ways H does it and ultimately no I the answer to that is a resounding no and no I don't have to personally like all 53 guys I mean Indians fans hated
Eric plunk back in the 90s you remember that when he came in I turned off the TV cuz I said I don't watch the end of a movie that I know how it's going to end I particularly if the leading character dies I know how this ends I really it's a good point there's on every team there's guys there's going to be guys you don't like I've never once and I hate when people do this do not question someone's fandom do not question someone's fandom that's up to them it's not up to me what am I the judge the
guy judge of all fans you're a nine you're a one I'm a negative four you know like it's that's that's a personal preference that's like saying I like pizza yeah okay if someone comes up and says I don't like pizza cool I can't argue with your taste buds so if you don't like Baker Mayfield but you love and root for the Browns you're a good fan here's what makes you a bad fan if because you don't like said player you are then rooting actively not that it affects the in outcome because we know it d
oesn't but if you're I can't watch a game with someone who's going to root against Baker Mayfield when he's a Browns player or root against DeShaun Watson For Better or Worse he's ours and it's like family we don't selectively kick members of our family out we don't like they're still family Deshawn Watson is still family we don't have to cosign everything he does there are a lot of guys in this league that a lot of the fan base can't cosign what they do sure that's not what this is about I love
d your point about political like we can separate the the artist from the art I don't have to not root for someone because they're this way politically I don't care entertain me yeah yeah and whatever comments you make politically I don't have to consume right I don't have to follow you on social media I don't have to see any of your opinions that I disagree with but here's what I need from you f for 3 hours on Sunday and if so you it doesn't make you a bad fan if you don't like deshun Watson I'
m sorry right but if you root against DeShaun Watson while he's wearing an orange helmet that makes you a bad fan you know these conversations to me are very interesting we clearly are we we don't look alike we come from different times in life our experiences are different and so when I seen this in the rundown I knew this would be a healthy conversation and I'm with dudes that I consider friends and family you said something and I'm going tell you this what you just said like he's family he be
longs to us he ours that's how black people feel about deshan Watson and so when you see people trigger feel that way about wat I need you to hear me out I need you all to hear this okay I don't think anybody has ever felt like that he's never did anything wrong right I don't think people ever felt like that everything is just a okay okay but because of the history of this country right and people are quick to compare to other people of other races who have done things similar worse Etc you know
and so people of color they tend to be like I'm not saying he was not wrong but you got to chill out on how you beating up on him because he belonged to us so I'm not saying he was wrong but yall got to chill let us handle this in house and so when you said that that's what it made me think of and y'all know me I don't really have these conversations I'm just giving you a honest opinion that's how black people feel about desan Watson that's really interesting that you put it that way because I
I I mean obviously I'm not going to you're black I'm not what you say goes it's like you can't talk someone out of what they like and don't like but it's funny you put it that way because one day because we all know Garrett was so just so defensive over Deshawn and one day we were having a some conversation and I said GE do you ever do you think he did anything wrong because I don't know if I've ever heard you answer that and he said yeah I I think he did and and so it's exactly what you just sa
id we're not saying he's innocent or he's not guilty of anything but he's still one of us and we got to love him and protect him I agree with that and look I do look at Sean Watson though his family yeah because he's in the family that I am a member of that tribe yeah I'm a brown whether and and I'll be a brown until my death and and like I said because I know G like G is more triggered than I am behind stuff like that but I'm just telling you like and it don't have to be deshan Watson that we'r
e talking about right it can be anybody from anything thing like you know right now this this big thing about Diddy you got half the people who's willing to convict him right now and you got other people that's willing to say that you know I ain't saying this that and the third but chill out right now people are sensitive to certain things when it come from certain people and I understand that and that's fair and and I think it's that's not just a trait of a black person right I think that there
was some ownership and racial divide with Baker where a lot of white guys were just like hey he's white I'm going to support him for whatever reason the thing that I have a problem with with deshun Watson is and I and I'm not just saying this because I try to be as objective as I can on this I'm not just saying this because I'm a Browns fan I don't think the punishment fit the crime I just don't now what is the crime well crime is determined by the judicial system and by that standard no crime
was committed so why was there such a punitive punishment why was it 11 games why because it's also the other part about this is The Scarlet Letter that he has to wear now forever MH whether he was not convicted he was not charged with crimes but the man will always wear a Scarlet Letter and you will in the first paragraph of his retirement story it will read somewhere in there he served an 11 game suspension for accusations by 26 women of sexual abuse well he wears that now forever and I think
that's not fair I mean Trevor suspended 1,00% agree with that 19 194 days and likely will be blackballed by an entire totally unfair 1000% unfair because there now in his case there were criminal charges I believe that were filed but he has not been indicted he has not been convicted of anything it's it's it's so hard for me I'm I'm probably not going to word this right it's hard for me like yes the judicial system determined whether you're guilty or innocent or whether you're you know you're cl
eared or you're not it's really guilty or not guilty but yes I should say guilty or not guilty but there's still they're still gray there's still gray area and we all just said do you think deshun Watson did anything wrong I think that what happened between Deshawn Watson and a number of his masseuse was sexual activity however I don't believe any of it was forced on Deshawn's part he may have been doing a lot of things that were insinuating he wanted some sort of sexual contact but I don't beli
eve that Deshawn Watson held anyone down or forced someone to do something that they did not want to do that's just my I don't think he physically held anyone down when I read I mean it wasn't even just 26 when you read the New York Times story of 60 and 70 women with allegations I don't believe 60 and 70 women conspired against this man I don't believe that I don't believe that either that's why I believe there was a pattern of uncomfortable actions taken on behalf of DeShaun Watson some women
I think returned with actions of their own that that were answering his precip you know what what he was precipitating I also think that there were a number of women that he started he started doing things that were would be considered unprofessional in a professional massage setting and they were like oh no I'm out yeah that is too much for me I say this and that that's also offensive but is it illegal Behavior to get back to the you know like don't like part of it you know my brother tells me
all the time I tend to project how I am and how I was raised on other people my father always told me how the hell can you sit up there and say you don't like somebody that you don't know personally right and I noticed I do that in real life I can be amongst friends and you know people be like talk about the show and they say well I don't like this person I don't like that person on the show and I would say to my knowledge you've never met said person right you might not like their take you migh
t not like how they go about things but how can you honestly say you don't like somebody that you never interacted with that never disrespected you personally that never done anything to you and my brother says you know that's that's projec and that's how you are that's how you feel and he's right I tend to project in that way a little bit and so like when these questions come up I love these conversations because me personally I have a hard time saying verbatim I don't like somebody and I've ne
ver met this person sure me and this person ain't never have a convers in reality all and and some of us here like I've met DeShaun Watson but I don't I've never interacted with him on anything other than a professional basis I don't know him Al that leads me to lean on people that do and all of the people that I've leaned on that I know that know him have said the same thing this is not his character he is a good human being kind decent respectful so that's what I'm left with I can't Jud again
I I I I take the same approach that I would in my everyday life you know I I go out of here and people like to in talk interact and they want to know things behind the scenes and people have convers I don't like this person yeah to I know you I know for a fact that you've never met this man so how can you say that and I just think like you know maybe it comes from years of working in the courtroom tied into how I was raised like judge Patton man shout out to judge Patton used to tell me all the
time man everything that you say matters everything you don't say matters and when you say out your mouth you don't like somebody I automatically go back to my upbringing my father always told me you how you like somebody that you that you don't even know yeah and how do you dislike someone that and that's why you need to let athletes like entertain you that's why you need to let musicians entertain you that's why you need to let actors and actresses just entertain you like we get caught up in e
verything outside of enterment but here's the last thing I guess I would say on it is but you guys have met my middle son AJ he is a massive mive Browns fan he's 13 he's almost 14 years old massive Browns fan like was emotionally distraught after the Houston game and I'm like buddy you got to get a handle on this I went through those years my wife was texting me because I was in Houston saying he's out he just he's losing his mind he has a closet full of Browns jerseys you name it he's got their
Jersey except I won't buy him a Desa Jersey I can't get you've made that decision I've made that decision as a parent I will not buy him a Deshawn Jersey I can't get there interesting and he's never asked for one that's interesting he never asked for it he knows he's old enough he knows what's up and he have he and I have had conversations about girls and about you got to have permission and you can't just go around grabbing girls and kissing girls and all and you know but that's the decision t
hat I have made personally is and and my wife's in agreement with me on this we aren't buying him a des J there's as a parent you have every right to make that decision and I and by the way I was in favor of them pursuing him here's the crazy part because I have daughters and somebody asked me they was like you know when when the Browns uh traded for deshan Watson did you have a conversation with either of your daughters and I said no absolutely not because I would be dropping the ball as a fath
er if I wasn't having these conversations with my kids by default I don't need somebody accused of something like this for me to do my job as a parent I have the proper conversations of with my kids about everything that go out here in the real world now when you're a parent it's so funny how your view on everything changes yeah everything and you can have the Outlook that I these people just entertain me at what point though do you cross over and let them be role models for your children that's
where it's the com very very I I don't need an athlete to be a role model my kids Nei I don't need them to be a role model their role model should be their parents they're teachers they're clergy if they're relig you know the in coaches somebody that they don't know on TV that they root for for 3 hours a week we got one super

@mojohnson7872

And for the record, I am a girl dad as well. But you know what? I teach my daughters that most women don’t get taught? I teach them to stay out of a man’s face and never think it’s OK to put your hands on a man if you don’t want him to put his hands on you. It’s one thing if you’re being attacked without cause, it’s another when your here going toe to toe like you’re Ali. We always say it’s never OK to put your hands on a woman, but it’s not OK to put your hands on a man as well. Everybody should keep their hands to themselves.

@TalkinnGrubbinMedia

My main problem has always been selective outrage and selective morality. For example, a lot of Bengals fans jumped on Watson for what he was accused of, but they never jumped on Jackson Carman for having inappropriate relations with a minor.

@tupacamaruiv5804

I don’t have anything personal against Deshaun. It was a stupid trade that is building a strong Texans team while Deshaun cashed checks in Cleveland.

@raushoun9449

Been a Browns fan since 76. The question to that answer is neither. Love em both. Only so called fans and so real fans knows in my opinion they hate Watson for no reason, some to an extent.

@willwilliams407

2 Texas grand juries refused to even charge Deshaun due to lack of evidence. However the two clowns sat on this panel and acted like they’re saints‼️‼️I bet they’ve actually did things to women behind closed doors but have the nerve to bash without evidence.

@keevinlee2193

Glad you mentioned Ray Rice because that’s a great example of what I’ve saying since the beginning. This hate on DW4 is unwarranted and unfair because all you know is the one-side news blurbs and never really knew the guy prior. As a long time Houstonian and fan of him since HS DW4 is NOT the poster child of abuse- did stupid things yes but not what they are trying to portray. This whole Buzby things smells rotten and there’s more to this than has been released but back to my point - you thought you knew Rice until the video and until there is video of DW4 laying hands on anyone everyone needs to step back and be fair to the man until he can tell his side. (I know about these things because something similar happened to me).

@dell982

No, you dont have to like DW. BUT if you want him t fail (and the team with him) Then you are a bad fan

@lucasagnew761

It’s not deshaun, they’re offended because they put their heart & soul into Baker

@Dub257

I’m with Jay, I don’t believe he forced anything upon anyone

@mojohnson7872

I’m from Cleveland and this is my honest opinion. The Cleveland area fans are some of the most hypocritical fans on the face of the planet. Overly entitled for no reason and think everything is supposed to go exactly how they want it togo, when it doesn’t, they just shit on the players who play for their teams. Just think of how much better the teams would be if they gave them the same energy that they give the buckeyes?

@ThomasSmith-hd6oj

Earl cool….. but no one man can speak for an entire race…..slow down there son….no one is that big

@aaronbutler9373

AFC North Quarterback (like or dislike) 1. Lamar Jackson 2. Joe Burrow 3. Russell Wilson 4. Deshaun Watson I'm not into likes or dislikes. I'm into reality and actuality.

@DPjr-dl5vd

You don’t speak for Black ppl speak for yourself bro.

@DrClaw77

Disclaimer: I'm an Eagles fan with generally no "dawg" in the fight here. I tend to agree with Earl's first statement here: if you call yourself a Browns fan, yet let your dislike of Deshaun go so far that you will root for the team's downfall, then yeah, you might just be a "bad" Browns fan. And maybe you might need to do what some have already done: move on to the Bills or some other teams if he bothers you so much. as for those who dislike Deshaun, it's not as easy as saying they're "Trumpers" or even being some kind of Mega-Liberal. Both camps have a good deal of representation in the Anti-Deshaun camp. What is common among them all is the reasons for disliking Deshaun, which generally fall into 3 camps: 1) the allegations, 2) QB play that didn't live up to the hype, or 3) Both, which is generally skewed by reason #1. For those in camp #1, I have only one question: IF we are to believe that the allegations are true, based on all the salacious reporting on the topic, the outrage it engendered, the public relations burden upon the team signing him, so on and so forth, then why did the NFL (even with a hefty suspension as conditions upon reinstatement) even allow him to continue playing in the NFL? Some may argue that the NFL showed its real colors by blackballing the likes of Colin Kaepernick (who was called a "SOB" by the then-President of the United States publicly) and Eric Reid, and only banning Ray Rice after the tapes of the acts he committed were leaked. But it still would not explain why the NFL would even allow it, given how much outrage the nature of the allegations against Deshaun was generated. I'll give you my educated guess: It was because the Houston Texans, not the women cited in said allegations, were seen as the true wounded party. Whatever crimes you think Deshaun may have committed, the one the NFL sees as the problem was withholding his labor. When the reason was cited as the team trading away their best players, atop Watson's public comments against the racism of the owner (toward the actions of Kaepernick and others), Deshaun made himself a target. And Deshaun's biggest mistake was not living in a clean house. The average Deshaun disliker dismisses this reasoning as "conspiracy", but that is because they have a warped, or rather, naive concept of the relationship between owners and players (i.e. means of production and labor). That the Texans enabled any alleged misconduct was quietly reported and even more quietly reprimanded; it is not a talking point. They stood to benefit the most out of a Deshaun reinstatement, while also letting Deshaun knows who's boss; the relationship between Texans ownership and ambulance chasing lawyer (and avid football fan) Tony Buzbee is not trivial or coincidental. The NFL knows exactly how the general public (including some Browns fans) would respond to this information, and most importantly knew that they would not question it. In short, the NFL put on a "dog and pony show" to show themselves as responsible custodians, while the show goes on. The best way to get people thinking a certain way is to ride with a moral panic. So here we are with Watson. The chief concern is that can he live up to the hype and make the Browns a better team. We are almost 2 years in and not a peep of any recidivism (if there was even actual misconduct -- the criminal courts, which would have had no problem throwing a Black man under the bus, no matter what his social and financial standing was) declined to take up the matter. Civil courts are generally a matter of expedience for the defendant, so that has no bearing on what really went down. We live in a society where questioning these sort of things opens you up to all kinds of abuse. Faux-moralists on social media went wild on the likes of Peter Pattakos, even going so far as to cast aspersion on the man's daughters in broad daylight, something they would never have accepted themselves. The NFL subreddit is a cesspool of wanna be prosecutors who suddenly started caring about the Browns because of their QB. Even the Browns subreddit punishes those who push back on the Deshaun hate a certain way. As for the notion that people "around the league" dislike Deshaun, that is patently false. We saw the reaction from NFL players in Houston after his first game back in 2 years. Other NFL players (even in competing AFC teams) support Deshaun. The Browns locker room is the best it's been in years, by all accounts, since Deshaun came here. I don't think I've ever seen a Browns coach wear any gear of a local high school team, much less the Tarblooders. People think it's one way, but it's the other way, and it's usually talking heads with a concern troll mentality (and attention seekers like Roberto Shenanigans on Twitter) doing so. Reality is that Deshaun is QB1. The success of the Browns depends on him, like it or not. If not, there are 31 other NFL teams you can call home. Go Browns (unless you are playing the Eagles, but especially if you are playing the Cowboys).

@jamesmcghee5329

It's OK if you don't like Watson. What makes you a bad fan, and in my opinion, a bad person is the fact that you keep sticking your opinion in other people's face. If you don't like Watson, don't fucking watch.

@eburns1

Jason, no one else is buying Watson's jersey either. I saw 3 at the Steelers game out of about 40,000 fans wearing jerseys.

@halloffamebullies

All this for a dude that didn’t do anything violent to these women . More so that woman spit on hunt and tried to kick him

@steveeggers

i dont like #4 bill cosby playing qb for the cleveland browns and him averaeing 5 games a year in 3 years and i dont like stupid questions

@ryannalls1480

Watson is my guy. He brings us the best chance to win it all. Just hoping he can stay healthy. He's gonna ball out this year.

@wwz1011

Can't blame Watson haters as it is more than just accusations. He has settled 20 of them, likely for millions $$. Another group don't like his performance so far, way below the $$ and draft picks given up for him. Me I understand both of these factions. This is a league driven by QB play. No longer are the Trent Dilfers of the world going to win the SB. So the Browns went all out to get a top tier QB. This is a critical year. Watson can re-establish himself as a special QB. He does need to do a better job protecting himself from injury. I am rooting for Deshaun as I continue to be a Browns fan.
