Operator wears VR headset which displays the camera images that the robot is perceiving and it also connects him to the audio system. These non-autonomous robotic designs were created as part of the ANA Avatar XPRIZE, a four-year, 10 million dollar competition to develop avatar systems that will revolutionize human telepresence. Team NimbRo from the University of Bonn, Germany saw XPRIZE as an opportunity to put their knowledge to the ultimate test During the live finals, they had to overcome a
major challenge just minutes before the final round. We discovered one of the arms wouldn't start and then we came up with a
MacGyver solution I would say. There's a safety pin that you can insert that deactivates the internal
brake system so we put in this pin and secured it with tape, and that's how the robot went through
the finals, with tape around around the elbow. To see how NimbRo performed at the ANA Avatar finals
event, watch the full video on our YouTube channel.
