passions a little bit background on me I have a strong interest my interests lie across the intersections of Education entrepreneurship and philanthropy I currently am an assistant principal um in Saint Paul Minnesota at a middle school I am an eighth grade assistant principal and I've been in the field of education for well over 30 years but in addition like I said I also have interests some part-time interests that connect me to the non-profit world and also the business world I am also on a p
art-time basis I am the executive director of a non-profit organization called uplift movement and I am the founder of uh for a profit company called ideation four and I'll hit on both of those I'm going to talk real briefly about what is uplift movement and then we're going to move straight into how to utilize canva and as you can see pay attention to some of the slides because everything you're seeing I'm not only using canva right now to present but it is a very powerful tool and will be hitt
ing on some of those things today and why you should be utilizing it in in some tricks and and what you can do in using it so what is uplift movement uplift movement our mission is to recruit retain and engage so that blackmail Educators Thrive and Excel we do this by creating Affinity spaces that uplift um blackmail Educators across the country and the types of spaces that I'm talking about we create spaces that are in print in person virtual and also on radio and our signature product is calle
d The Uplift publication which is an annual publication that we've produced and we have impacted over 90 black male Educators since 2020. we launched literally three months before George Floyd was murdered um and so the one of the benefits that Ed gave me was it gave me uh an outlet um an expressive and artistic Outlet in creating this um publication because part of the reason why we created the publication is because so often that there are currently about two percent of educators are blackmail
Educators and there's a need to increase educators of color in general in in the field um so I'm not gonna go too much into that today if you have questions about that you can ask me more about my non-profit um just some extra notes I mean why just why that why I will share with you why that significant why that's important because our students deserve to see us they deserve to see us in several different roles um particularly in the field of education so I'm going to move forward you can suppo
rt our organization in three ways you can buy our publication on Amazon we have two public two issues out we are currently working on a third issue the third issue will actually highlight Minnesota blackmail Educators and we'll be coming out in the fall you can also contribute to um our annual um spring donation and then also you can become a sponsor for our annual um conference which we call the gathering this year will be October 21st and we are super excited because we have some Dynamic keyno
te speakers will be joining us and it is um sponsored by Hamlin University here in Minnesota all right so let's jump into our Workshop um oh I'm sorry one more thing um so save the date for those of you who are joining us today um my consulting company is I have a background in fundraising and grant writing and we have a workshop coming up on July 23rd it's all about storytelling for Grant Secrets um the aspect of knowing what your story is um and how important it is to incorporate into your Gra
nt proposals is is vital um that's what that's your differentiator that's what helps you stand out from the from the rest of the crowd so save the date um I can make sure that I share um the links for this there is a QR code that you can use to register for that Workshop foreign so what we're going to cover today um I'm going to go through a couple samples I'm going to go through the general how you get started with canva how do you navigate in canva um I'm going to provide some design tips we'r
e going to talk a little bit we're going to talk a little bit about branding and I'm going to show you some samples as well and then during this we are going to make this interactive so if you have questions along the way you can pause me and um uh we will go with those questions so canva is an awesome platform um I've been using it for several years and it's just an awesome tool for non-profit organizations and entrepreneurs um you has it has the capability to make print and virtual collateral
to promote your company you can create brochures business cards capability statements logos annual reports and Pitch decks and just a whole host a variety of things that you can actually use um virtually um using it for your email and you can and also for print um needs as well for your organization foreign allows you to easily create designs with a variety of templates to create amazing collateral that represents you and your company so first getting started you can sign up for canva for free y
ou can use they have a new integration piece where you can actually use Facebook or Google to actually log in um I'm going to say this um but I don't I don't even you want to probably my I'm saying this because my wife tells me all the time you should write down your username and passwords um I have a bad habit of not doing that and I am lazy and when it comes to I love the future that it allows you to be able to just automatically log in with Facebook and Google it just makes it much easier but
you do want to have that back up and then write those down somewhere um you can also upgrade for additional features um now one of the nice things is that non-profit status gives you access to canva Pro which is has premium features and you can add a dish up to 10 people from your organization to be part of canva but you have to go through their process when you get on the websites um It'll ask you to you know sign up as a non-profit and ask you to show your proof that you are a non-profit orga
nization um and then you will get um email correspondence back because you definitely want that canva Pro um features those features like one of the features that I absolutely love is a feature that actually takes where you can take a photograph and upload the photograph and you can actually remove the background of the of the photograph and it will just have the outline of that individual and you'll see some samples of that on the page that's a great feature any questions I'll pause any questio
ns so far any questions feel free to chat um put them in the chat box I see we have a few others that tuned in good morning Keyshawn thank you for joining us hey Shantae thank you for joining us all right we don't have no questions right now thank you all right so we'll move straight into the navigation piece um I'm a firm believer um that um we are all Beyond novice I would I would say that everyone on this call is beyond a novice um technology Navigator so keep that in mind especially if you'r
e new to canva there are interfaces we are constantly learning how to navigate all types of different platforms on your phone on your computers so just keep that in mind that you do have the skill sets to be able to learn this it just takes a little bit of time um so the image you see here um is your home page in the background um it's your virtual desktop on canva on the left here you have your online you have your um the home page here you it includes your online desktop your virtual folders y
our recent designs it also has a branding kit in design school I'll talk a little bit more about brand of the design school um a little bit later but basically design school is also a major resource because if you have no background in um in the design elements you definitely want to check out some of those their tutorials on there on you know best practices and using design elements in your um collateral that you create for your organization now in the center of your page you have a variety of
templates and these templates can be used for Instagram for Facebook for flyers for presentations to create your logos um and a whole host of other features you can design shirts as well now um and then even they have a a a feature now that you can not only make your your own shirts on canva you can actually order the shirts on canva as well so that's a really nice feature I I just absolutely love some of the features that they've added because I have seen canva grow in the past five years that
I've been using it canva has significantly expanded um and it's just like I said it's a resource that you you definitely don't need to be using foreign now when you create um your first uh and I call them collateral um when you create your first collateral or uh document that you're creating this is what it looks like um you have a horizontal uh Pane and vertical toolbars up here is your horizontal and vertical and I'm going to go through the vertical pieces on the left hand side you have it wil
l include templates uploads photos elements and text now that these are all the basic elements that are included in your vertical pane if you just go on to uh canva and actually sign up now for the free these are the elements that will be included now if you sign up and get the pro the pro version once you get that you'll have more elements like Styles and a few other things um aspects there's other features that are included um in this like videos I'm in other pieces that are included and then
um here in the middle um you see this is just your blank template and really this I mean canva will makes canvas so powerful is that I mean it really kind of integrates a variety of different types of um documents that we're used to using like word um PowerPoint so very similar features um that you'll be able to use in canva as well now your horizontal pane this is your design right here is your horizontal toolbar and that includes your naming function number one here you this the first thing I
would always suggest is because these are all templates when you first open up your document you want to be in the habit of making sure that you're naming your document and you be mindful of how you're naming your documents um it should make sense um to you in your organization anybody in your organization um should be able to understand oh yeah this is ideation Source pitch deck for this for this upcoming conference so be clear on your naming and make sure that you you don't keep um the standar
d template name that's there when you first open it over here number two is your sharing feature the sharing feature allows you to actually send your um draft it can send this document to somebody via email which is really a really nice feature is one of the features they added just a couple years now that have had this feature you can email this and people will be able to view um your documents um as well and I believe they now have a feature where if you can share it you can also leave comment
s as well um when you share it with individuals then here number three the down arrow this is your downloading um feature and you have the capability to downloading features are also I love it because you have you can download it as an image you can download it um as different types of images you can download it as a ping and ask for it to be transparent so if you're doing a design if you're doing your logo and you want to get rid of the background you can do that download and get rid of the uh
the white background you can also download it as a PDF file um and they have a standard PDF file a print a format file for PDFs to be able to send it to Office Max or wherever you're sending your your postcards that you might be making um that is also available the last one is your this whole bar here is your your formatting toolbar so you have different effects you have a color palette here you have filter I'm not sure if you guys can see my my pointer okay yes we can see it you have um adjustm
ents different types of adjustments you can crop your photos you can flip your photos there's just a whole host all the common kind of formatting tools that you have in word PowerPoint or other um uh programs you'll find in this as well questions so that's kind of your basic overall for navigating how to navigate canva now let's move into some design tips and these are things that you want to consider and I have these are kind of my top there's all types of different design tips these are my top
three design tips um and why these are our top for me is that they're ones that I I always reflect on when I've created something and also they're always they're ones that I always have someone else look at um as well to see if it makes sense so getting started you want to pay attention to whatever you're creating why are you creating it what's its purpose is this going to be on social media is this going to be um uh is going to be an email that you send out to donors is it's going to be someth
ing that you actually print so being mindful of what the end purposes of your creation you definitely need to be you need to know what that is you also want to be aware of who's your audience um is this going to be again is it going to be is this is your audience your donors or is it going to be your your um participants who are part of your your programming that you work with and then also again coming back to that point about what is your project name name it something that you're going to rem
ember um and then moving on um some Basics is knowing your colors using complementary colors um pairs are eyes like using red and green together yellow and purple blue and orange so being mindful of some of those the color palette and how best to use those so and this also directly relates back to your brand so thinking about your brand what are your colors and your Brands um do you have one two three or four colors how are you incorporating that into your Design Elements you want to make sure y
ou're doing that because it's all again it's hot it's that visual representation of who you are and who and what you represent the third one is content check four eyes are better than two double check your content uh for spelling and grammar I am notorious um for spelling errors and homophone errors so I try to always have my wife or someone near me actually look um at my documents for errors and I just ask them please rip this up a few principles of design you also should keep in mind in creati
ng your collateral is contrast alignment and proximity and I try to spell this out um visually so I'm very visual um so I understand things really well when it's presented to me visually so contrast you're talking about four ways to create contrast in your design contrast allows the viewer's eye to flow alignment proper alignment in in a design allows elements to be visually connected and then proximity elements related to each other should be near each other to provide Unity so these are just v
isual representations of those Design Elements and these are things that you definitely want to keep in mind like you don't always have to Center stuff you'll see that through all my slides some of my things were centered some of it wasn't some of it is left Justified some of it is right Justified so you just had to figure out what um style you and what design you want to use and be consistent with it and then the proximity piece um a good example is like if you're making a flyer um if you're ma
king a flyer for um you know a fundraising event for your organization and you have a great photo of the last event that you did you want to make sure that that that photo is front and center along with your actual contents not on the back of the flyer or somewhere obscure that doesn't make sense make sure that it's aligned with the content that you're presenting as well um I wanted to share about it you know actually it's been about a couple years it's been about two years ago I took my Consult
ing business through a branding process and learned a lot actually um about branding as it relates to you you know representing your brand um and my company used to be called SJC Consulting LLC and that just didn't capture what my company was about um and we came up with the with the name ideation four ideation is the process of creating creating an idea from your mind and bringing it into reality basically um so that was the the the the the name that we came up with and one of the things that w
e learned in the process is that your brand is also about what is the value you bring what's your value that your organization is bringing what's the relationship and then also you're talking about the relationships you build what are the relationships you're focused on what is your organization who is your organization focused on building relationships it's not just your donors it's just not the funders from from the foundations who else are you building relationships with and then also it's al
so about communicating what is your why um so I'm going to pause here and I'm gonna actually play this um this is uh her name is Dr tala Whaler and she's a personal branding expert um so right if I go ahead and just share this one Yes sounds good um just make sure that your sound is sharing as well got it foreign School we're going to learn quick tips for how to manage a personal brand when people come to me and say Dr Waller can you help me build my personal brand would I think that they're ask
ing me to do is make other people view them as valuable so stay tuned because next we're going to talk about everything that there is to know to build a personal brand that can help you achieve your goal foreign oftentimes it takes a strong personal brand to even Garner the influence necessary to build a business run a country raise awareness or make a change and that's because people like you and me have always been the core of a brand before we had corporate Brands we were selling goods and se
rvices to each other meaning if I'm selling you apples and my apples are trash what are you gonna say to layers apples or trash it's not the Apple's fault it's my fault so no matter if you are a product a company a country or a person the purpose of a brand is to build valuable Relationships by providing experiences that people enjoy so first let's explore those enjoyable experiences you want people to have with your personal brand there are lots of useful brainstorm templates in canva to help y
ou get started it helps to include other perspectives why not invite a few friends or mentors to collaborate with your brainstorm you can use the share button to invite other people to your brainstorming session like this simultaneous collaboration makes it easy for you to work with others on a document at the same time you can use words images and colors too remember you can also add your own photos from the uploads panel on the left group the results into clear themes or categories try to refi
ne into three values that best describe your brand lastly keep the mood board somewhere for inspiration later on foreign and I also wanted to share that as a resource because that's that was one of the resources I mentioned earlier the the school um that canva has that you can go into the little tutorials that you can access on a variety of topics they have topic specific um on Design Elements um what that Focus just on color or just on your fonts that you're using um so that's a research that y
ou definitely want to to utilize so again so the different plans just so you're aware they have a free plan which anybody can get they have the Pro Plan they have Enterprise they have an education one and then they have the non-profit one so when you sign up you want to sign up as a non-profit to get the free um access to the Pro Plan um so you have those extra features in editing um you also with the Pro Plan you get access to some things I didn't mention you get access to uh host uh uh resourc
e of stock photos that you can search to utilize in your presentation so you don't always have to have photos already ready you can have some stock images that you can use for free um trying to think what else the video components uh they have video they also have music they now have um you know templates for doing um uh video segments for your social media posts and then um there's a whole host of other features the learning piece that I mentioned they have getting started with canva graphic de
sign Basics branding your business and social media Mastery those are all um mini tutorials that I would suggest um each of you going through because it just it it has a lot of information in there and a lot of templates as well now I'm gonna I'm that is the conclusion of um what I wanted to share now we can kind of open up and I wanted to just go through I have some samples just to show share with you of things that I've created and we can open up to any questions that people have so this is so
this is a sample of a business card that I did for my consulting company front and back this was a card that we created for uplift um for the Legacy cohort which was the first chord of uplift and what it was was basically a little it was a it was a business card um these are all the individuals in the first cohorts they got a little uplift pin um so you can make you know there's a variety of things that you can make foreign this is a pitch deck that I created my wife runs a company called SJC b
ody love and um so she needed um a pitch deck when she went to the wbenc um conference recently um so this was a pitch check that we put together for her so it just gives you an idea of visually of just a different um layouts the different features that you can put on here foreign example I actually did my publication both Publications even the third one now we're we're actually creating the upload publication in canva um so they have some some nice templates that you can uh utilize or you can c
reate your own so these are just samples of some of the pages from my first the first publication and that's that's that's pretty much it love it thank you uh so much um we have a lot of I love canva in the chat box so that is absolutely yes we love canva um it's such an amazing tool I remember um when I used to use you know back in day we used to use publisher to do a lot of these designs and um and then if you're you know um especially if you're you haven't you didn't go to school for graphic
design you're not quite using the Adobe Suites or anything but publisher was the go-to and having canva makes you look like um you are using like Adobe suite or so forth I'm sure like the graphic designers can tell the difference but I can't um so um that is absolutely amazing okay we have a question in the chat box from Dolly we have can you show where you can design like a shirt um if you wanted to design a t-shirt that's a great question in canva um how and I guess where can that be done yep
I will show you um let me see if I can pull up let me stop sharing this page let's see if I can you're gonna be able to see this yes all right let's see if I can find it real quick [Music] all right so up here in your search box type in shirt and you'll get you'll notice you'll say it'll have two options in the search feature templates in your projects so I'm gonna go over to your projects because I already have done a few shirts and show you so what it does is it brings you here and you design
your image here and where foreign seconds we'll just start from scratch t-shirt design so we'll just pick this one all right so it has if you look over here there's all types of different templates you can come in here and change the text in here readjust it sorry I'm walking I'm working on a smaller screen notice you have some guiding lines that show up the right side left side and then if you drag it just enough Center and then you can go here to preview it print shirts and it'll give you a pr
eview of print your design on quality t-shirts you can do one-sided let's change the color of the shirts let's do gray go back up to see the preview or we can do this let's change the background color to Black ah and here's that trick let me show you this trick so um I just put the background code as black right now and you notice that the image actually has that white background and then here's my favorite feature where you click on the image itself and you go edit image and you tell it remove
background okay we'll take a minute and process and it will remove your background as mentioned earlier in Adobe Photoshop this would take much longer to do so here's the preview of your shirt here without that white background we can change the color again let's do red preview your shirt you can tell it what size you want how many quantity how many quantities and they will ship you your shirt love it other questions let's see any other questions make sure that you drop your questions in the cha
t box and I love that you can do all your printing right there in canva if you did not want to go to another source you can do everything right there and even with your like let's say your business cards and so forth you can have that shipped to the uh or not shipped will print it at the FedEx near you so that you're not waiting you know as long um for it to come in so that's amazing and I love that feature because it saved me a couple times hi Kim thank you for joining us all right so well than
k you so much for coming on today and sharing um tips for canva uh this is definitely useful and and um a really good low-cost way especially if you're starting your non-profit organization you can't necessarily hire a designer or someone um to do the designs for you you can go in and use these templates um so I appreciate you coming on and sharing some tips and tricks on how um we can use canva uh to help market and and help our brand our non-profits brand so thank you again Jonathan for joinin
