[Music] [Chad Cox] Here at Battery Creek we're dedicated to
making all of our students college and/or career ready in order to
accomplish that we have a state-of-the-art CATE Center as well as
courses that are embedded and offered within our building. [Chef] you don't really
need any more of that juice. [Chad] Our CATE Center is second to none and it is just a
wonderful facility to give our students a hands-on experience. [Aimee Parry] It gives students
the ability to really see all facets of C
areer and Technology education
to be able to go out into the workforce or go on into college and be able to
exceed in the goals that they want to obtain. [Greg Lightner] In this culinary arts program here at
Battery Creek we focus on fine dining and we teach our students not only the
basics about how to refine the basics so they can go out and work in industry any
one of the restaurants any one of the hotels got a little more high-end and
even some of the family style restaurants have hired a lo
t of our
students we're trying to prepare them for real-world experience in this
program our kitchen is set up very similar to any restaurant kitchen that
you would walk into on Beaufort or Hilton Head Island and that also prepares them
to work on a line on any kitchen so when they get into one of the restaurants and
walk onto the line they're not on unfamiliar ground it's the exact same
way as if they were working at the Hilton Olive Garden or one of the
higher-end restaurants on Hilton Head. [
Ashley Smith] I teach intro to engineering design
where we learn about the design process and how to manufacture products and the
students have learned how to go through the problem-solving process work
together with teams and then ultimately create 3d objects. This class
incorporates a lot of math science and technology skill
which can be used in other classes throughout high school as well as their
future. [Beth Ann Melton] The pattern on the underside looks like what? So at Battery Creek we
have an agriculture program we're under the Natural Resources pathway we start
with Ag science introductory course move on to environment
resource management wildlife management and then forestry is added next semester
with these courses the students get to learn about the nature around us learn
what lives in their own backyard. [David Poulin] Many students want to pursue welding in the
future they can learn and get certified as a high school student they can leave
high school with welding AWS w
elding certification they learn fabrication
skills we do aluminum stainless steel steel they will learn over the course of
four quarters they will be learning how to do welded steel they will weld with
shielded metal arc welding mig welding TIG welding there are a lot of
opportunities in the welding and with fabrication. [Aimee] So I might feel the vibration. This is the Health Science
program here at Battery Creek High School and I teach health science one
health science two health science thre
e and ELO which is a work-based
learning credit for students who have completed the pathway where they go into
the community to be able to do hands on experience from the
skills they've learned in the previous courses that I just described this gives
students the ability to be able to see if they want to be able to pursue a
Healthcare career. [Student] Do you want to keep it at 3 centimeters here? [Richard Vaughn] This is the Aeronautics technology class our aeronautic technology students do si
x projects
throughout the semester from building wings pilot seats we check we do kites
and we also not we don't only build them we test them to get data as far as I'm
out far they go by high they go how fast it goes. Our advanced class they also have
six projects as well it's all project-based so it's on the students we
give them the job they have to do and they and they go out and they do the
jobs. [Katherine Baskwell] So the lumbar section is? In the sports medicine program we cover
basic thi
ngs from Anatomy to initial injuries and then we work our way up
through rehab and concussions and sports med 2 - and then by the time the students
reach sports med 3 they are actually full-on working as student athletic
trainers. So they're getting internship hours with practices and after-school
activities and games and then I also teach medical terminology where students can then get prepared for any job in the medical field. [Cameron Bolton] So what you do is complete this step and that step
I teach
web design fundamentals of web design and in that class we cover HTML and CSS
principles and how those two coding languages work to build websites so
what I want you guys to start out with basically we do step by step projects
meaning that you know one day we may do a project learning how to do background
colors or background images how to space fonts how to add you embed YouTube
videos within the web sites and then as we go along in the course the
culminating project is an actual websi
te where the kids create a functional
website with links and buttons and you know all kinds of cool content and then
they turn that in we test them and it's a really cool experience for those guys.[David] CATE's where it's at this is a great opportunity for students to earn
certifications in all of the CATE programs they learn skills and trades that
translate into jobs. [Beth Ann] It's incredibly important that kids learn these skills
for life after high school. [Cameron] We're also trying to te
ach them skills where they
can be you know wage earners once they get out and I think CATE programs gives
them an advantage. [David] Right now all of the skilled trades there are job openings
everywhere everybody we talk to every industry says that they cannot hire
enough people. [Greg] Industry is very much looking for people that have knowledge and have experience unfortunately in this area we have a
very big gap in the workforce and education this helps fill the gap every
student is not going
to leave high school and go to college but every
student needs a job so this actually gives that student a leg up. [David] And right
now there are so many job openings out there the industry is not filling we
don't have young people stepping up and taking those jobs so if you want a good
job a good paying job and a great career CATE's the way to go. [Music Fades]
