CITIZENFOUR is the never before seen, utterly riveting first-person look at how director Laura Poitras and journalist Glenn Greenwald first met with whistleblower Edward Snowden in Hong Kong where he gave them documents showing widespread abuses of power by the National Security Administration. It is an unprecedented fly-on-the-wall account of one of the most groundbreaking moments in recent history.
In January 2013, Poitras (recipient of the 2012 MacArthur Genius Fellowship and co-recipient of the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service) was several years into making a film about surveillance in the post-9/11 era when she started receiving encrypted e-mails from someone identifying himself as "citizen four," who was ready to blow the whistle on the massive covert surveillance programs run by the NSA and other intelligence agencies. In June 2013, she and Greenwald flew to Hong Kong for the first of many meetings with the man who turned out to be Snowden. She brought her camera with her. The film that resulted from this series of tense encounters is absolutely sui generis in the history of cinema: a 100% real-life thriller unfolding minute by minute before our eyes.

I hope this story ends up in the history books.
I can see how stressed he is in the interviews, I find it hard to believe he's anything but genuine. My gut tells me to appreciate what he did and acknowledge all that he gave up to bring this to ligth.

Mark my words: one day it will be seen as subversive to have private conversations anywhere. "Why did you spend thirty-seven minutes disconnected last Tuesday? What are you hiding?" "Why wouldn't you want family, friends, and potential employers to have access to everything you said on March 17?" "If you're not a criminal then you don't mind if everything you've ever said or done is scrutinized every time you get on an airplane, vote, or are pulled over by a police officer." I predict that will be the tone one day. Hell, we're halfway there now.
just finished watching the documentary. all my respect for this dude.
This trailer for the Edward Snowden documentary is put together really well, can't wait to see it. The emails (see WIRED) are touching and amazing (its funny he doesn't think he's a writer), to paint the target on his back and accept all blame, to ensure the information reached the American public... Yet still people will call him a traitor. Its almost like people don't want to be freed from the doublespeak and doublethink of Big Brother. After all, Winston Smith accepted that 2+2=5 in the end.
Finally, a trailer that doesn't show us the whole film in a preview, and understands the value of suspense. For that reason alone I will watch this because it's obvious they know what they're doing.
This guy is a HERO, how many government employees have seen this type or other types of abuses or criminal activity from our government and have done something about it? It takes a lot of BALLS to do what Mr. Snowden did. God Bless him.

Real hero ... we believe in u dear .u have done unforgettable act.. we admire u . Indian people respect u . We will be very to see u in this documentary. Sometimes u will feel u r alone ... but hero always stand alone to change our society. U can read our mythologies we will find some similar character. We r with u .

Laura Poitras + Steven Soderbergh = cinematic excellence. This one is definitely on my film radar. I can't wait to see it.
Just came back from watching this. One of the most important documentaries you'll ever see. It's a real life cyberpunk thriller. I hope things better for privacy laws and whistleblowers, cause we're going a very dangerous path to dictatorship if these violations go unchecked.
