Hey and welcome to a new tutorial Once again, you recommended this a ton it's crochet ear bonnet You've been asking this since I made the first crochet ear bonnets in one of my Work With Me, I was just training on making these so it's been many months and only now I think I'm somewhat skilled enough to do a tutorial I've made about ten of these now Usually there should be a pattern with crochet items that tells you what stitches you have on each row but I'm not skilled enough to write one, espec
ially in English, but I try to write in in the description for you! and I'm doing these pretty randomly, even tho I have something on the paper But because you've been asking this so so much, I'm gonna make this So let's start with the skill level I now have (not much) What do you need for the ear bonnet? basically you just need yarn and crochet hook I'm gonna do a pink one, using this lighter pink for the base and I like to make a bit darker edges, so I have darker pink for that but the main co
lor is the lighter pink then the hook, I personally use 3,5 mm one for my horses if you need to make a bigger one, it's easy to just take bigger hook I've done one commission with 4,5 mm hook, because it needed to be bigger Then, you can crochet the ears, but I do them from fabric, and for that I need fabric Let's start making then I'll try my best to show the stitches when we go But we use single stitch (SC) and slip stitch (sl st) Take the yarn you're gonna use for making the base Start by mak
ing a loop from the yarn I like to leave a little end so it's easier to weave in in the end I just make a basic slipknot you can do it differently, but this is how I make it Then, an ear bonnet that's suitable for my horse size I make this starting loop , put your hook there then you crochet using the end that comes from the yarn skein I'm doing four stitches from it I take the yarn and pull it through the loop there's one two, three and four This is the beginning row it's the narrowest part, it
'll widen from here towards the ear holes Next two rows, 2nd and 3rd rows you add one single crochet (SC) in the row We do the row with single crochet (SC) You do SC by putting the hook thru the next stitch take the yarn on the hook pull through the stitch, leave it on the hook take the yarn again then pull it through the two stitches on the hook That's the single crochet (SC) I'm using mostly this stitch Adding the stitch on the next stitch Put trough the next stitch, grab yarn and pull thru so
we have two stitches on the hook again, grab yarn and pull thru both stitches that's one SC, when you want to add the SC you just do another SC on the same stitch There's now two SC in the same stitch You can maybe see there's two in one stitch now finish the row with SCs The beginning is so hard to show because I can't have a good grip yet Here's this row, then turn it around going opposite way next same on this 3rd row, add one SC I'm gonna do it in the first stitch Do one SC and then another
one in the same stitch Then just do the whole row with SC Like this, there's now one more stitch than in the previous row When you've at the end of the row, always turn your work Next 4th and 5th rows Oh, and I'm only crocheting the backside of the stitch so I don't put the hook through the whole stitch Because then it'll be very heavy and thick On the 4th and 5th row I add two SC per row Don't do the adds next to each other, because it'll form holes I do at least one normal SC in between the a
dded SC I'll do the second add at the end of the row when you do the adds, it starts to widen slowly Again, turn around do the 5th row with two added SC Rows 6-9 I do one add in the middle of the row and one at the end of the row If you add too many in the middle of the row, it starts to curve too much so that's why I add one in the end Showing with the 6th row When you've reached the end of the row, just add one more stitch grab the yarn and pull thru the loop on the hook there's a new stitch n
ow Also, in rows 7-9 add one SC in the middle and one at the end That's nine rows done Row 10 I add two SC in the middle and then one at the end I need to help with my index finger because I'm only crocheting the back of the stitch If I'd crochet the whole stitch I'd be easier just to put there but I often need to help it when only crocheting half of the stitch Remember to ass one stitch at the end You can notice this starts to become a little curved it's not straight anymore Rows 11-13 I start
to add slip stitches (sl st) Add two SC in the rows 11-13 so it'll widen faster so, two adds in the row and one at the end of the row Then depending on how tight you crochet and what yarn you use you may need to add different amount of slip stitches (sl st) For me this isn't too curved yet, so I'm gonna add one sl st in the row 11 so two adds, one sl st and one add at the end I usually do the sl st after the added SC the sl st pulls the row a bit straighter You do the sl st like this: put your h
ook through the next stitch grab the yarn and pull through and also through the stitch on your hook That's slip stitch (sl st) When in single crochet (SC) you take the yarn on the hook, and then again grab the yarn and only then pull thru two loops In sl st you pull the yarn straight thru the one loop on the hook but I'm not doing another sl st on this row Continue with SC and remember to add the second SC somewhere on this row and also one add at the end of the row On the row 12 I think one sl
st is again enough because it's still pretty straight So, two adds, one sl st and one add at the end Row 13 looks kinda wavy So I'm gonna do two sl st, after both added SC that it straightens a bit more That's row 13 done You can see it starts to widen faster Rows 14-17, I add 3 SC and make 2-3 sl st and one add at the end per row The amount of sl st depends on how curved your row is Third add here, then I'm gonna take a look how wavy it is and yes, it's wavy, so I'm adding thirds sl st then rem
ember to ass the stitch at the end so it widens faster Then, rows 15-17 add 3 SC, make 2-3 sl st and add one at the end I'll be doing them now Here's row 17 done Also, you shouldn't try to make this straight, it needs to be a bit curvy but not way too curvy/wavy The curviness makes it sit on the horse's head a lot better it won't sit straight on the horse's head so there should be a bit of curviness or wave going on As you can see it might spiral and look crooked, but it doesn't matter we'll be
blocking this, and it'll fix this Next, rows 18-22, we're adding only one SC per row and then more sl st I've marked that I should do 6-8 sl st per row Depending on the row how much it has waves So, add one SC, make 6-8 sl st and add one at the end Currently this is about 12 cm wide, so we need only few more cm more width before making the ear holes Rows 18-22 are the last full rows before the ear holes so, on row 18 I added one SC, made 6 sl st, and add at the end you can see it's not as wavy a
s the last row Then rows 19-22 similarly add one SC, do 6-8 sl st and add at the end That's the row 22 done I forgot to say that don't make the sl st after another sl st because then it looks different here when you leave at least one SC in between, you're not able to see them in here It depends on the yarn and tightness you use, you may need to add more SC or do more sl st in your ear bonnet Try to have the tart pretty narrow, and then before ears make it widen faster by adding more SC Next we'
ll make the ear holes The width should be the length from ear to ear (over forehead) +2-3 cm my horses have about 11 cm from ear to ear then I added few cm to that so now it's about 14 cm wide because there needs to be 2-3 cm next to the ears So add few cm when crocheting, and also blocking will add about 1-2 cm Now we move to row 23 we'll make the ear holes on this row On both ends, do five SC it'll be next to the ear That's five SC now we make the ear holes Don't crochet into this row, but do
a chain I personally do 15 new stitches that's good width for my horse's ears So, making 15 stitches chain That's it You may need to do more or less Measure your hobbyhorse's ear, and this chain need to be as wide For me this is about 4,5 cm and it's 15 stitches Now we need to connect it back to the base so it forms a hole For that, I fold this in half and find the middle spot I'll crochet three stitched in the middle This is folded in half now this is the middle stitch and here's second, and th
ird on the other side Take one stitch before the middle one and put the hook through it the chain is still here the hook Then just do a normal single crochet (SC) now there's a hole and it's connected on the base then I do two more SC Then we do the next hole, so 15 stitch chain or however many you have, depending on your horse's ears width Then we need to connect it back to base I left five stitches on the other end, so same here counting 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 stitches Then connect the chain with SC
and do four more SC So we can finish this "row" That's the ear holes done my hobbyhorse's ears fit well through here Next row after making the ear holes We'll be doing two rows to this, so going back and forth before crocheting over the ear hole Do three SC and one sl st do the sl st on this chain attachment part That was 3 SC and 1 sl st then turn it, now we go to opposite direction do the same, 3 SC and 1 sl st Now we're at the end again, turn it Next we crochet over the ear hole I'll do it l
ike this: two SC and then sl st on this higher point Then we start to crochet the ear hole I make SC and sl st after another only this chain part: SC, sl st, SC, sl st and so on When we reach the middle point Sorry, my camera ran out of battery... but I did three SC in the middle Before crocheting the other ear hole, turn it around Again three SC Because the hole won't be closed, it'll be about like this we need to get the middle and ends match this height otherwise the ear holes would be up her
e and other parts down and it would be wavy Then turn it again to this way, two SC and sl st on the higher point Next, we'll gonna crochet over the ear hole And then again, SC and sl st in turns over the chain This end will be done the same as the other end First row do only SC, then turn then three SC and one sl st Again, two SC and one sl st and again, turn Now this is at the same level, so we can handle it as full row so now the ear holes don't rise higher than the middle or ends So now wee d
o the whole row On both ends, do two SC and one sl st I do SC, sl st, SC Next we have the ear hole We'll be doing the ear holes and middle as one We don't want it to become any more curved, so we do more sl st every other stitch sl st and then two stitches together starting with the sl st then how do you crochet two together because we want to make this narrower now Connecting two stitches goes like this: Put your hook through the next stitch and grab the yarn pull it through the stitch and leav
e it on the hook then, go through the next stitch with your hook Grab the yarn and pull through Now there's three stitches on the hook but, now you pull the yarn you just grabbed through these two stitches That's two stitches together now we do sl st again, two together through the next stitch, grab yarn, pull through leave it on the hook then go through the next stitch, grab yarn and pull through and also through the two stitches on the hook that's two connected Then again sl st, two together,
sl st and so on also same in the middle At the end two SC and one sl st I do SC, sl st and SC Then we turn it Now we don't do the ends differently anymore I do every other stitch either SC or sl st and then two together doing SC or sl st depends on if the spot is higher or lower on these wavy/higher spots I do sl st but if it's pretty straight, I do SC I'm starting with sl st because the edge is a bit higher then two together then I do SC again, two together single crochet (SC) also, do more SC
than sl st on this row, so it doesn't become too curved yet That's one row done You can see this is a bit rounded it'll be head shaped because we do two together it starts to round if it was straight it wouldn't stay or shape on the horse's head well that's why we make a lot of two together Next row, do SC, sl st and two together so three different stitches after another: SC, sl st, two together, and continue the whole row like this starting with SC then sl st and two together and over again, SC
sl st and two together and do the whole row like this Then do two more rows like this Three stitches after another in this order: SC, sl st, two together That was two rows, next two I make SC and sl st mostly SC, but some sl st on the higher points no two together, so it doesn't just end here yet So, do SC and/or sl st the next two rows Then we're just missing the ending row Do all two together I'm left with about three stitches here you may have different amount depending on your work Then cut
the yarn, I leave about 5-10 cm so I can weave it in then you just pull this loop As you can see, the finished product is very curved and spirally but we'll fix it with blocking Next we do the edges, I have the darker pink for that take the end of the yarn I'm gonna connect it to this Just do single crochet (SC) around the whole edge Put your hook through the edge, grabbing the darker pink and pull through the stitch then just continue with SC around the whole ear bonnet at this point I'm makin
g a knot here so it won't loosen up so from the darker and lighter pink, make a double knot and then, just SC around the ear bonnet This will add a bit of width and also make the edges neater as you can see the edge is a bit rough and bumpy so it'll look a lot nicer and finished with the edge Also, crochet this edge a bit loose, so it won't pull the bonnet too tight That's the whole edge done Now I'm gonna weave in the ends, just around here in the under side Ends weaved Next is blocking, I'll w
et this with water and try to squeeze the excess water off so it won't drip water and that's the very important blocking, you need to do with most crochet Now that's moist, I squeezed the water off best I could When it's moist you can stretch it Now just stretch it around, try to make it a bit bigger and the edger round like this, it's stretched next thing we need to shape it I'm putting it on horse's head ears through the ear holes and yes, this is small pony, so the bonnet is wayyy too big for
this but sadly I don't have any horse sized horses right now, so I have to use this But the main thing is, that we get the head part rounded according to hobbyhorse's head Now I'm taking pins then stretch this and try to make it the correct shape and then, pin it on the horse's head I hope you still get the idea even tho the horse is way too small for the ear bonnet better to use more pins than too few Especially in front of the ears, try to make it wide stretch it so this middle part won't be
too high try to pull it so it touches the head Now there's a way too big ear bonnet on too small pony's head, but the main thing is it'll be shaping correctly now This way we get this head part a bit curved, and then the ears will also be correct, so they won't point outwards Next, you could make the drying/shaping faster by using a blowdryer, etc. but I don't have one, so I'm just leaving this on the horse overnight It'll be fully dry by tomorrow, so let's continue then It's the next day and th
e bonnet is dry take the pins off Here's the bonnet, is a bit rounded over the head This way it'll sit on the horse's head well and stay there Now we're missing the ears For that, I have fabric, you can also crochet the ears, I'll show that later this is about the same color as the edges I'll be cutting four pieces shaped like this They need to be big enough so the horse's ears fit in But I'm gonna cut four ear pieces now I already sew the other ear together Cut four triangular ear pieces You'll
need two pieces for one ear I make the inner side straight but then the outer side is a bit curved, and longer and the downside is sloping so that the ear points upwards on a triangle and straight downside the ear would point even outwards Remember the base is not straight If this ear piece had straight connection point on the base, it would be pointing out that's why I make it a bit sloping so the inner side is shorter than the outer side Cut four pieces like this, then sew two together and y
ou only sew the inner and outer side leave the downside open so you can put horse's ears inside I'll sew the other pieces, and then just turn it right side up then it'd be attached here Now I'm sewing the other ear too Both earpieces sewn Turn the base upside down, we're gonna make the seam underside of the bonnet Put the ear through the hole Then you just sew the fabric on the crocheted edges (Sorry about the kettle noice in the background...) So sew these together Just sew the edges together E
ars sewn in the holes, turn right side up That's the finished ear bonnet The head part is a bit curved, so it fits horse's head well Now I'm gonna show how to crochet the ears I made about triangle piece, using mostly SC and adding SC I made the narrow edge about 3 cm wide, so when I fold this, the horse's ear will still fit there You could also do four smaller triangles and sew/crochet two together but I'm gonna do it easier and make only two bigger pieces I fold this piece in half and I croche
t this long side together I'll just pull the yarn back and forth through until the seam is closed Then make knot in the end and turn it right side up As you can see, it looks like an earpiece, then just crochet it on the bonnet base Same way as with fabric ears, but instead of sewing, I'm crocheting Putting hook through the ear and base stitches then I'm pulling the yarn through both and use this style around the whole hole You could also use needle instead of crochet hook This one was a bit big
ger commission bonnet and they wanted crochet ears Personally I prefer the fabric ears, they are neater and sit better on the base But, you can also crochet, whatever you prefer That's the pink ear bonnet done, I also make a bit smaller version But that's the tutorial for crochet ear bonnet I feel like this is a very bad tutorial, but hope it helped you even a bit I'm just a beginner myself and don't know much about crocheting and it's try and error for me still I think I'm gonna do a new, bette
r tutorial in the future if I start doing these differently But I hope this was somewhat helpful Thank you for watching, please leave tutorial suggestions in the comments Like the video and please remember to subscribe Without further ado, hope to see you in the next video Bye-bye!
