autot tech classes are one of the most well-known Career and Technical education classes there students spend most of their time in shops instead of classrooms in today's CTE week story Michael Anthony heads to Sydney High School where the auto mechanics class is working on a vehicle much older than they are a 1957 Chevy 3100 truck is parked inside a shop at Sydney High School this old vehicle is being fixed up by the students in auto mechanics they've been working on the project for months and
got it driving in January because we've got it running and driving and freshen up the engine and transmission and everything in the rear end their teacher Roger Merritt brought in the Chevy to give students a chance to get their hands dirty and see how the classic vehicles were built it's kind of unique you know cuz uh it's it's different than a 2020 vehicle it's a team effort some students are focusing on the inner workings of the truck While others are restoring the Box senior Jonathan King sa
ys working on machines is something he hopes to do for a career probably going to go be an egg mechanic and work on heavyduty [Music] diesel Meritt says his goal with his mechanics class is to get people interested in a very important field that Workforce is retiring a lot and there's uh need uh students to fill those spots that uh those people are retiring from and the trades are you know one of the spots where they can be very successful yeah it's right there besides the restoration effort Mer
itt has the students bring in their own vehicles to do some service and maintenance including oil changes in Sydney Montana I'm Michael Anthony reporting for your News Leader Merritt says later this year the class will spend some time with the electronic systems and reading codes when troubleshooting vehicles
