Dakota Johnson was cut off by her father when she decided to be an actress

Dakota Johnson stops by TODAY to talk about her new film “Madame Web,” her career since starring in “50 Shades of Grey,” growing up with actor parents Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith, and why she "jumped" at the chance to poke fun at nepo baby criticisms. She also reveals that her father cut her off as she perused acting instead of a college degree.  » Subscribe to TODAY: https://www.youtube.com/@TODAY About: TODAY brings you the latest headlines and expert tips on money, health and parenting. I'm just not good at talking to journalists I think the big problem is that uh I say stuff and then they write it down and and it's really unfair because most of the time I'm joking by the way that was Dakota Johnson on SNL and before we get started Dakota just know this it's a safe space you can say whatever you want I'm not ring it down who knows those I mean everyone says they're safe you know what's funny about you you actually really do have like a great sense of humor great sarcasm and som
etimes all of that stuff does get misinterpreted as we go all the time all all the time all right well let's talk about something that you're talking about today which is something called Madam web you're playing a paramedic Who develops the ability to see the future and use it to say the save the lives of three young girls let's take a look get get up up get off get off get up me go get off you're going to die if you stay here get up are you threatening get up hey give me that back spooky a thr
iller totally spooky and and also just action it was all happening in this in this mov what made you decide to do this I I never thought that I would be in a superhero movie and I read this script and I was really drawn to the idea of a young woman's superpower being her mind and using that to uplift these three young women and help them discover their powers and you know she ends up she can see into the future and then she has the ability to alter the outcome and so she decides to use that for
good and I found it to be really powerful would you ever want to see into the future just I wouldn't never no I'm good I like being surprised yes and I would feel too much responsibility you yeah you like being surprised by life so this was also a very physical film did you have to do stunts and stuff I did I did I did a lot of stunt driving which was the most fun yeah and then I did some like hand to-and combat which was also very fun I worked out a lot which I love so great can we talk about S
NL you were so good on SNL that was so much fun what was it like what was it like for you I love it so much it's like I I hosted the first time um almost like N9 years ago and I I just love it like was that 50 Shades time that was the first 50 Shades yeah do you know so it's 9 years almost to the day or close yeah I guess so yeah isn't that unusual to think about that crazy it's crazy and I've had like five or six movies come out on Valentine's Day since then it's very weird super weird I know I
mean could you have predicted that trajectory of your career like I was just thinking about it as you were sitting here like we started nine years ago that wasn't the beginning but it was the beginning for a lot of us knowing you and you were on this rocket ship so how's the ride been so fun I'm I feel so grateful I I mean I dream I've dreamt of this I like I I I don't know I I'm still dreaming I'm still in awe I'm still just like I love my job so much I want to do it forever and and I am just
like so astonished and grateful to be where I am Melanie Griffith is your mom Don Johnson is your dad and I was reading how Don Johnson was like look you're going to college I don't care what you're thinking you think you want to be an actress I want you to go to college but you were pretty defiant you were like no no I know what I want what was that that must have been a kind of a difficult decision to make or was it easy I mean he cut me off so I it was difficult but I I um what was reasing wh
at did he say to you he he said to everybody everybody I mean all of my siblings which there's like 900 but um he said to all of us like you could you you'll you'll be he calls it the payroll which I I'm like okay it's an allowance but um that I he he said if you go to college you still get an allowance and I was like well I'm going to be an actress so he was like all right well you're on your own so your allowance was cut off my I was and how did you was it tough to make it I did some like litt
le modeling jobs that helped me pay my rent um and then I started auditioning and got some jobs proved him wrong I definitely like had moments where I couldn't afford groceries and things like that and needed to ask my mom to help me she was the nice one I kind of like how you also poke fun of this whole nepo baby thing Neo however you say it Neo baby neppo baby yeah what do you think of that whole sitch I you know when that first started I found it to be uh like incredibly annoying and and bori
ng like if you're a journalist write about something else that's just like lame yeah uh so the opportunity to make fun of it I jumped at of course you did well you were amazing on SNL and this this uh show Madame Webb is awesome too I'm so happy you're here you're also just a nice person I'll stay all day okay oh she say she'll stay all day all right by the way Madame Web Hits theaters on February the 14th another Valentine's Day movie hey thanks for watching don't miss the Today's Show every we

Everyone who wants to be an actor, who doesn’t have parents or relatives in the acting industry, find nepotism “annoying” too.

@Kitkat-wu3ow

Nepo babies need to own their title. It gets a foot in the door and that chance is a huge help. IMO, most people who have connections would take that opportunity. After that its all about the work...the production will either like your work or not. And ultimately the audience will definitely let them know if they have any talent. So, it isn't annoying or boring... Saying that is being lame.

@skittletoes7260

Her response to the nepotism is kind of annoying. She obviously had a substantial advantage and idk why she downplays it instead of just owning it

@dinakp6294

I don't think she likes any of the movies she's been in, but I guess you take the roles you offered.
