Mayo Clinic

my name is Dane Mueller and I'm a histology technician at Mayo Clinic so a histology technician essentially what they do is they take the specimen from the patient and they'll bring it into the lab and then they'll cut it up and they'll put it on a slide so the doctor can get a diagnosis of the tissue so typical day for me is see how what slides I have to stain so you take out a specimen vial and then you take a description of the specimen then you would take it to the processor runs it through
formal and alcohol and xylene and then it gets infiltrated by Wax and then once you have it in that wax block then you can take it to the cutting area and then it actually gets cut on a microtome and put it on slides and then once it's on slides you can take it to staining and give it to the pathologist to do his diagnosis [Music] Mayo Clinic does a thing called the career investment program where they invest back into their employees I'm using the career investment program to go back and get a
four-year degree I'm a histology technician I only currently have my two-year degree so if I go back and get my four-year degree I can become a histology technologist and with that you know comes a pay bump and also it opens more opportunities maybe if you want to go into management or maybe you want to go into education we have those roles that you can go into [Music] if you like working with your hands and you also like science you know it's a great combination of the two and you can look at t
hat and feel like hey I'm helping people at the same time [Music] you know every time you see a patient that has been affected by a Mayo Clinic all the specimens have to come through histology so that tissue had to come through us and it's really you know makes it feel good when you see something and you can know oh I had an impact on that patient's life and I think that's a really cool aspect that you know makes me feel fulfilled with my job foreign
