ld by the twins that Nikki had a second boyfriend two boyfriends two boyfriends jealousy passion Revenge she was fearful she contact the police watch for the double twist it's terrifying is it possible that this could happen I was shaking oh my God oh my God you can't even imagine I'm Lester H and this isine here's Keith Morrison with bad blood once in a while in a complicated life a woman can get lucky which is why you're looking at a sweet little town called Conor's Georgia antique downtown ri
nged by gated communities good schools a Sheen of newness it was really pure luck that brought Mickey Whitehead to this house in this quiet safe neighborhood just far enough away from Atlanta that capital of overheated ambition down the highway here in Conor she could give her beautiful twin daughters a better life than hers but of course luck Fortune fate can go either way sometimes in ways very hard to comprehend everything about this goes against nature How could somebody do that this is defi
nitely the bloodiest crimey I've ever been to in the next few minutes you will know exactly when it happened where it happened how it happened but of course the real question is why it happened and the answer to that as you will see kind of complicated but that's how Nikki Whitehead's life was I loved everything about Nikki yaka Harris grew up with Nikki could see she was a wild child and pretty and fun irresistible Nikki was to me she was a phenomenal amazing person yes and she was effervescent
said Nikki's mother Linda bigger than life she was the kind of person that when she comes in a room she just take over this space you know with her personality her laughter but when Nikki was 12 boy a handful Linda was a single mom with other kids at the time so she agreed to let young Nikki move in with Dela Nikki's grandmother H was said y could tell her let the girl run wild boys parties we grew up kind of fast mhm and then later she became pregnant at the age of 18 or 19 um so we move kind
of fast yeah yeah pregnant with identical twins whom she named jasmir and tazmir jzz and Taz born in 1993 the twins's dad was around briefly then gone and their mother figur a Nikki's grandmother daa Nikki's mother Linda didn't like that I wanted Nikki to get our own place establish our own life and my mom would discourage that she would you know find ways to tell her no you're better off here that's how it went for years but Nikki had learned how to style hair and was doing well at it and event
ually saw the possibilities of Independence so she eventually wanted to kind of get out from Del's definitely control right she did she she wanted to um as the girls got older she definitely wanted to um take control of her life and then one day in 2000 Nikki was shopping at the mall and Robert hadman just happened to be in exactly the right spot I was sitting on the fountain one afternoon about 6:00 and that walks Nikki coming in to the mall you're just your eye caught yes she was I said I just
can't let her get away that he was old enough to be her father didn't matter Robert was in love so he persuaded her to go to dinner that very night he took her dancing he bought her nice things treated her like a lady she was my movie star that's what I call her my movie star his movie star with two sweet daughters he also soon loved as if they were his own and that's how Nikki came here to Safe secure Conor's this is Robert's house and here they made a family unusual in some ways as you will h
ear but it was nice it was it's really nice everything just right and she wanted her life to get even better so while she kept her job as a hair stylist she enrolled in advit as B College to study fashion design that's when I actually learned that Nikki was a hair stylist Ronda Anderson taught a couple of Nikki's classes she thought Nikki had a sense of purpose whether it was about her kids or fashion or other people's hair I came in the class early one day as un normally do and she looked up at
me and she said Miss Anderson what's going on with your hair I said what excuse me and then she asked me this question do you have a hair stylist and does she know you have your hair looking like that today I said yes and no she said Miss Anderson I'm giving her one more chance one more chance if it's not right I'm taking over Rhonda loved Nikki and Nikki loved her girls she put the twins in dance and music classes at school they won awards their teachers describe them as almost sweet and happy
and engaged and there's pictures of them you know one on each of Nikki's arms Katie Beck was a reporter at NBC affiliate wxia in Atlanta teachers describe them that way that they had a sweet demeanor in their classrooms and with their classmates and um they were almost timid then as they reach their teens they change somehow in the ways children often do in the way n herself once did and just like Nikki the Twins were sent to live for a couple of years with the rather permissive family matriarc
h Dela until 2010 when Nikki welcomed Taz and Jazz back all together again in Robert's house a fresh start and Nikki turned up at school beaming yes he was in a very good Moon she looked great she had you know a new look with her hair and she had bra in and she was happy as if the braids in her hair were kind of an announcement her girls were back they were pretty much her pride and joy um oh you started thinking about her was hard was really hard it was January 13th 2010 a sheriff's deputy happ
ened to be in the neighborhood the girls had just come home from school the deputy saw a look of horror on their faces heard their screams as they came pounding on his car one of the twins ran up and literally beat on the side of his car uh and told him that they had come home from school and found their mother murdered murdered in this safe gated community exactly what had happened when we come back they were going in and out of fits of tears and crying traumatizing Disturbed two distraught dau
ghters are about to reveal a clue we're told by the twins that Nikki had a second boyfriend two boyfriends two boyfriends when dat line continues Wednesday afternoon January 13th 2010 a gated community in the town of Conor just east of Atlanta 16-year-old Twins jasmir and tasmia arrived home from school walked in the front door followed a bloody Trail and there she was in the bathtub their mother 34-year-old Nikki Whitehead very very dead as we walked in the mess that greeted arriving Conor's po
lice detective Chris Moon told a terrible story this was a long drawn out fight um they Nikki was fighting for her life for several minutes this was not a quick attack and over with she fought here she was struck in the back of the head she had a laceration to the back of her head there was blood on the door on the door handle as if as if she somebody tried to get out or she try to get out and then along this wall you could see a bloody imprint of hair braids which Nikki had her hair in braids w
here she fell slid down the wall the most severe blows came when she was face down in this area this is clearly where the asent got on top of her from behind and started stabbing to the base of her neck a huge amount of blood here this is yes this was the the largest pool of blood in this area right here she was dead or near dead when her asant dragged her to the bathroom and that's where she was in a tub of water what her daughter saw before they ran to the street screaming as we get there you
have these uh two beautiful young 16-year-old girls that that discovered their mother murdered Kanye's police captain Jackie Dunn wanted to get Jazz and Taz away from the house and that's when he noticed they were hurting themselves one of them was biting their arm and were like hey why are you biting your arm and she said I'm just so upset I do that when I'm upset this was the worst kind of case detectives need information fast but how do you get it from children who have just left their dead m
other [Music] they were going in and out of fits of tears and crying asking for their mom they both seem to be rocking back and forth you you know contemplative traumatized um Disturbed I can remember thinking man I hope there is a suitable family member to adopt these girls cuz they they really need um sure somebody to reach out and be good parents for word spread through the late afternoon Gloom a friend called yaka Harris she had asked me when was the last time I talked to Nikki and that's so
I talked to Nikki Saturday she had told me that you may want to go over to her house because she said the helicopters were there and the news reporters tell me when you heard that what you think I don't know it was like ton Vision I was just in slow motion yua called Nikki's mother Linda told her something bad was going on over at Nikki I was so nervous I didn't know what to do I was like oh my God oh my God I was just shaking I could hardly try Linda pulled into her daughter's neighborhood and
saw a police officer he said me can you pull over there I said no I need to go to my daughter's house he said ma'am will you just pull over there please I pulled to the side I said what is going on listen ma'am the only thing I can tell you is your daughter has expired there is no getting over news like that as Nikki's family tried to take it in investig set to work figuring out who did this the girls said their mother was still in her room with the door locked when they left the house for scho
ol at 7:30 we missed the bus so we had the walk perhaps the crime scene would yield more clues and the girls could Lieutenant Chris Moon headed back there we were looking for cell phones computers indication you know typically victims are going to have called or spoken with u their asant just before the murder or around the time of the Mur Hur the attack did not look random it was not rape but it was so violent that suggested rage um and when you look at at a a rage murder it's usually somebody
very very close um to deceased so naturally the first person they wanted to talk to was the man of the house Robert headed Nikki's boyfriend but Robert wasn't around when the last time you saw Robert he left he came on Sunday he stayed for a day he left here's the thing Robert was a Long Haul truck driver which explained his absence but not where he was especially when Nikki was murdered we had to find Robert and we had to check on his uh GPS that takes a while right yes sir meanwhile detectives
spread out through the neighborhood knocking on doors had anyone seen anything unusual couple of neighbors said they saw a red car in Nikki's driveway that afternoon a car they had never seen before and a black car on the street too they asked the girls who could have been there okay does your mom have any other friends or anybody else that come over [Music] you but the only one I've been here talk lately is Joe Joe who was Joe we are also told by the twins that Nikki had a second boy boyfriend
Joe Carter two boyfriends two boyfriends now that got the investigator's attention time to dig a little deeper into the life of Micky whad coming up jealousy or bad blood involved they were clearly having an argument yelling and screaming over the phone he was a immediate Person of Interest when dat line [Music] continues detectives in Conor Georgia were getting a crash course in the short life of Nikki Whitehead found stabbed to death in the home she shared with her Livin boyfriend Robert and
her twin teenage daughters Jazz and Taz who at least had each other for support the girls put their arms around each other and it's going to be okay we're going to find out who did this they were clearly relying on each other to get through this but they were able to convey some real information who she was talking to it was Joe their mother had a second boyfriend man named Joe Carter a local barber who shop was right next to Nikki's Salon love triangle sounded to veteran homicide detectives lik
e a potential recipe for murder first they talked to Robert boyfriend number one who was on the road in his Long Haul truck how did he react to the news he was devastated it was easy enough to check on Robert GPS records put of a full day's drive away when Micki was murdered and when they met him as we did they could plainly see his grief was real because that was my about a half and she was gone you know this was a hard thing this was how Detective discovered the unusual nature of Robert and Ni
kki's relationship Robert told them he knew about the other boyfriend wasn't a secret he didn't mind he said he wanted Nikki to be happy when he was away on the road he's a truck driver and when he was home he expected for uh her and him to be a couple and when he was away he realized that she was going to have other relationships but what about Joe how did he feel about that he was upset about something said the twins night before the murder they said Joe and Nikki had a nasty loud argument on
the phone all she told Joe is that he couldn't come over there last year was there some suggestion that there might have been you know jealousy or bad blood involv well that's what we immediately thought and so obviously he was a immediate Person of Interest so he was and remember a neighbor spotted a black car near Nikki's house the day she was killed Joe's car perhaps you know what Joe drives No I know a black car in that driveway and if a black black Richard Reed was the Rockdale County distr
ict attorney we need to look at Joe Carter especially since Nikki and and Joe had been in an argument they were breaking up that's a dangerous time in a relationship it can be a dangerous time in a relationship wasn't hard to track Joe down he was in the barber shop where he were it was around closing time we was ready to pack up and get out of there and they um approached um me and my friends then they basically said that she's passed away I mean she's dead I was shocked I was just in shock how
' he react when he came to see he immediately started weeping he didn't know about the or claimed not to know he claimed not to know but reactions don't always tell the real story but they was basically asking about me and her relationship when the last time I seen her and um I started to realize I was a suspect detective Moon did what any good detective would do he looked for the sort of marks Nikki might have left on her asal's body looked at his hands looked at his arms look at his he he took
off his shirt but Joe was clean not a suspicious scratch on him and detectives learned that black car outside Nikki's house didn't belong to him still they brought him in for questioning hooked him up to a polygram and asked him Point Blank if he killed Nikki and the polygrapher determined that he was not deceptive in answering questions I wanted them to find a killer and I wanted to know that it wasn't me so that's it for Joe it appeared that Joe was not involved in the death of Nikki Whitehea
d so two boyfriends and two dead ends you know in addition to Robert head and Joe Carter could have been a stranger could have been another did you look into that possibil we did yes and they still wanted to know who owned another car a red one that was also seen in Nikki's driveway the day of the killing it didn't take long to find out it belonged not to a murderer at all but a friend Nikki had missed a hair appointment with this friend and the friend had come by knocked on the door and not bee
n able to make contact with Nikki and Li imagine had she opened that door door such a grizzly scene so full of rage and passion so who killed Nikki someone close then as they struggled to figure it out investigators encountered in their own police files something rather stunning coming up I just woke up and my daughter is gone your daughter wased I don't know family secrets there were a few yet Ty be revealed it turned into a fight physical fight a physical fight and she contacted the police whe
n dat line continues the investigation into the murder of Nikki Whitehead was not offering up any Usual Suspects the two men in her life Robert head and Joe Carter had been eliminated and a home invasion seemed very un likely in her gated community there's no histories of any peeping Toms no histories of assaults in the neighborhood so we just kept coming up to dead ends thing is they felt sure this had to be a rage murder so violent so protracted which made it very likely it was someone Nicki k
new even possibly a family member so we started getting into some of the family Dynamics and that's when they turned out in police files this remarkable incident back in 2007 one brief snippet of family history but an event that changed everything it came after yes ma' I just woke up and my daughter is gone at the house that was the voice of Nikki Whitehead meeting your daughter was Abed I don't know ma'am I woke up the door was unlocked and she's gone I have twin girls one of them is gone how o
ld is your daughter oh Lord 13 you can hear her Terror oh Lord my worst night now do you think maybe somebody came and got her or do you think came got ma' she don't do stuff like this I don't know but a few hours later Nikki learned that her daughters did do stuff like that jazz had not been kidnapped she'd snuck out to fool around with a boy up until that day I believe in Nikki's mind she had perfect girls Nikki realized that they weren't necessarily the girls that she thought they were Nikki
was determined to help her girls avoid the mistakes she made at their age so she cracked down on curfew of boys on cell phone use the following months would be familiar to many parents of teenagers screaming slam doors Stony silences and then One Summer Night in 2008 a year after Jazz sneaked out of the house a big argument and it turned into a fight a physical fight a physical fight it was Taz and Jazz against their mother and at that time I think she felt fearful and she contacted police was i
t the right decision to call the police that ensured the family ended up in juvenile courts Nikki asking the judge to help her teach her daughters a lesson instead seemed to Linda the judge was blaming Nicky I guess the judge thought they were too cute and too smart that nah they couldn't be doing you know he did not take it serious what did he decide to do well he asked my daughter he said um would do you want your kids to come back home and she said no you're hna not unless they understand tha
t I'm not going to tolerate that kind of behavior and so he was like you me to tell me you don't want your kids to come home what Nikki wanted was a court sanctioned demand that her daughters obeyed the rules but that is not what she got instead the juvenile court judge sent the girls to live with Dela their great grandmother what were they doing while they were at Del's house pretty much whatever they want they kind of ran wild and got in trouble repeatedly in school and out shoplifter smoking
marijuana seeing the wrong type of boys well she didn't want that she knew you know she was going back to when she was their age in her grandmother custody she didn't want that for her kids seemed to Nikki that Dela was undermining her and had somehow stolen away the daughters who mattered to her more than anything else in her life she really wanted them back really want them back how did you know this how did she Express that she said it every day I want my girls I'm going fight for my girls an
d in January 2010 Nikki finally won the judge ordered the girls back back to Nikki's and Jazz and Taz did not like it not one bit so they start screaming and holling I want to go back with her why would you make us go back in court they were doing this yeah Vicki told her mother not to worry she said I'll be fine they'll they'll maill out they'll you know they'll come around a few days after the Court's decision on a Saturday night Nikki put on a welcome home party for the girls they hug me you
know they kids me and that was the last time yucka saw Micki four nights later there they were Jazz and Taz answering the increasingly pointed questions of a couple of detectives you tell me when you got home today seemed a little OD that the girls were still wearing outdoor gloves the detective asked could you take them off please arms when we did that we did see a cut on one on his hand we saw bruising on the knuckles and skin marks and bite marks bite marks and we asked him to explain those t
he bite marks could have been self-inflicted remember the girls were so upset on their way to the station they were biting themselves and the other cuts and scratches the twins told the cops they had been fighting with each other I just have it was as they told their story detective dun took a good look at jazz and Taz and a disturbing idea settled down somewhere in his brain I haven't made up my mind but but I'm suspicious coming up suspicious were there reasons to be suspicious we watch the hi
gh school video surveillance and you see the twins showing up about 2 and 1/2 hours after they should have for school what were the girls doing the morning of the murder when line [Music] continues there's a look a way of talking that suggests a thing the spoken words most certainly do not say as Nikki Whitehead's petite teenage daughters told their story how they discovered their mother's body how horrified they were the detectives watched their eyes their tearless sobs saw their bruises or cut
s and just new they're not uh behaving consistent with somebody that found their their mother murdered mind you there's a hurdle a person has to overcome to imagine that these two sweet teenagers might have been involved somehow in what could only be called as Slaughter though Nikki's mother Linda remembered clearly how angry the Twins were just a week earlier when the court sent them back to Nikki when jzz came out she looked over at my daughter and she said if I got to go back home with you I'
m going to kill you you heard this I heard this and it stuned me but teenagers sometimes do talk that way doesn't mean they actually do anything about it so the detective said about fact checking the twins version of events on the day of their mother's death starting with their claim that they had to walk to school that morning they told us that they had uh overslept a little bit that they had missed the bus uh and had uh walked to school it was a rush said the girls but they did get to school o
n time you made all your classes today yes so cops did what the cops do they checked surveillance tape from businesses along the route to school and what do you know law enforcement had observed the girls walking down um uh the roadway next to the gas station a little after 10:00 a.m. that morning nowhere near WR time as the school surveillance camera confirmed we watch the high school video surveillance and you see the twins showing up about 2 and 1/ half hours after they should have for school
so the Twins were caught in a lie and it was a big one but it wasn't proof of murder they flatly denied any involvement in that even when they were put in separate rooms they presented a United twin front they wouldn't sway there was never any disloyalty to each other they never said a negative comment about each other getting one to flip on the other was not going to happen no after those interviews they released the girls the juvenile court farmed them out to family and friends and the police
set their DNA and photos of their injuries like those apparently self-inflicted bite marks off to the lab and then they waited pretty sure science would tell them that these sweet little girls were anything but did they appear manipulative to absolutely I give you for instance jasm is in one room tasm is taken to a smaller interview room it's a parent that tasmia knows there's a camera and there's a recording system in that room and she starts to pray I really want them to catch this person God
she knew at some point in time somebody would watch that video and they would see a young innocent sweet girl asking God to help law enforcement find the person who did this and meanwhile at the glacial Pace these things occur the crime lab worked on the DNA and poured over those photos of the bite marks one on taz's arm was the impression of a big ugly bite they compared The Contours of that bite to a mold of Nikki's mouth the similarity was uncanny Nikki was most likely Source had their mothe
r bitten them trying to fight off an attack the bite mark on on taz's arm would be consistent as if she had uh her mother and a choke CLE from behind and that her mother Nikki is biting her trying to get away and when detectives saw the twins biting themselves right after the murder maybe that was an attempt to cover up evidence then the DNA results came back they knew they'd find Nikki's blood but remember one of the twins had Fresh Cuts on her hand and sure enough in a smear of Nikki's blood m
ixed with her likely ass salant a match it belonged to one of the twins but which one they were identical twins they have identical DNA so we don't know couldn't tell for sure which twinning the blood came from by this time the twins had been out in the world without a word from the police for 5 months wxia reporter Katie Beck I think those months built their confidence built almost in arrogance uhh that we're going to get away with this so you can only imagine how was May 21st 2010 just after s
chool how did they react to being arrested shocked they they thought it was over with it had been 5 months since they had heard from us the arrest was big news in Atlanta two sweet little girls charged with the murder of their mother who would have thought I mean people were were riveted by the story oh yes they were and when the twins finally told their version of events that cold morning in January the city was riveted all over again coming up threatening us we all going die today the Fatal st
ruggle did their mom start it on charge for I to stop to stop when dat line continues it's a complicated thing lots to do if you're a prosecutor preparing a murder case against pretty twin teenagers and so da Richard Reed was interested when one day defense attorney suggested they wanted to make a deal my response is it's great to hear it from you um but I want to hear from them and so I'd like to talk to your clients I'd like to ask them questions that's how da Reed met Jazz and Taz now 19 year
s old and heard them confess they did kill their mother but was it a confession really in fact said the twins it wasn't their fault she started it she started cursing his steps I think she was mad by just being late that morning they said Nikki was Furious that they were late for school and picked up a pot in the kitchen they said and swung it at them she still call those cord and [ __ ] and everything like that and stupid and everything like that and she threatened us you know we we all going t
o die today that's Jazz then Taz picked up the story so you took the pot away from your mom what happened then she like kind of start charged for I need now Nikki had a knife said the girls they tumed room to room trying to get it away from her before she cut one of them and in fact said t that's how her finger got cut I kept telling her to stop just stop just stop just stop but she didn't they said I'm trying to punch her I I think T stay up there t at this point in time how many times did T th
at on at some point exhausted the twins said they all called a truce it didn't last long they both describe mom lunges for the knife and when she does It's On Again finally said the girls they overpowered their mother who stopped struggling and moaned that she was cold so they put her in a warm tub tried to soothe her even though they said she was still spitting mad and threatening kill me now I kill you eventually they said she stopped talking drifted off in the warm water and died so what did
the da think after listening to the girl's tale of self-defense against a mother gone resur did you believe them did you believe everything they said no still don't the idea that Nikki launched an attack on her own daughters difficult to believe said the da sheer nonsense is what Nikki's mother called it my daughter never have hit her kid they they never had a spanking more less anybody didn't know Nikki know that wasn't her behavior it was very clear said the detectives who worked the case that
in fact Nikki was the victim of an unprovoked attack she had at least 45 stab wounds her spinal cord was almost severed Nikki bought for her life um we think she uh fought defensively you can see where she's on her back some of the time fighting off um people that are attacking her from above with knives as for the girls claim that they put their dying mother in the tuck to keep her warm as they watched her Fade Away fiction through and through said the police we think she was dead before she w
as placed in the tub or she would have bled into the water and the water would have been bloody they were putting her in the water trying to wash off the crime scene wash off the evidence in truth said the detectives these girls were remorseless def cant brilliant little actresses remember how they sounded just after their mother's [Music] deathy and I really want to C person listen to The Little Darlings when they didn't know they were playing for the cameras are you AV for9 this was recorded i
n the back of a squad car just after their arrest sweet little girls [Music] hardly [Music] please please they are aggressive they are angry they are [Music] combative oh and one more thing tucked away in one of the girls' bedrooms police found this journal inside a childish handwriting a death sentence they were notes to each other said the da written just before the killing she don't care she's selfish we got to get rid of her to which the other twin responds that's what I think also she got t
o go ASAP it may be the most telling piece of evidence that the whole death of mom may have been premeditated still da worried maybe a good defense attorney could spin the family's turbulent history the juvie Court drama Nikki's two boyfriends and somehow sell a jury on self-defense it would have been an ugly trial and I think to some extent would have been a misrepresentation of Nikki's life so he didn't like it much but he let them plead guilty to the Lesser charge voluntary manslaughter 30 ye
ars for each not enough said's mother Linda these children have KT my child brutally and you going to get them 30 years they shouldn't even be able to walk the street I know these are my grandkids but come on now I mean if they can do this to their mom God help us all and the questions that go over and over in your head are like what how everything about this goes against nature how the person that provides for you and raises you and loves you and gives birth to you how you could watch that pers
on die in a bathtub and and lie about it now tomorrow and I it was wxia reporter Katie Beck's report that brought the story to an Atlanta both horrified and fascinated she who first secured access to all those police videotapes exposing these Pretty Little Liars for all the world to see it suddenly becomes clear that these girls have multiple personalities that they can be whoever they need to be for their own purposes that they can more DWF between a fragile Disturbed innocent teenager into sor

you want to make sure they're good yeah we checked that very closely so Bobby and McKenzie plotted a modified trip wh stops at little airports over the state line in Wyoming around 10:00 a.m. checks complete McKenzie climbed into the cockpit I wanted to give her a hug in the worst way and then I thought n I'll give her a hug on the day we finish all of this cuz she's going to go oh syy old people but I was confident totally confident 30 minutes in McKenzie texted Bobby from poo Wyoming first le
g complete how did that go that went well she was headed to Cody Cody Wyoming after about 25 minutes she landed there texted Bobby and her mother that all was well and then a second little push from fate though none of them knew it a huge forest fire had erupted to the West smoke billowed toward McKenzie's revised flight path but now Mckenzie was on her way to Greybull Wyoming tiny airport tucked behind a ridge hard to see from the air through the Smoky Haze White Knuckle Landing the message you
got was that she wasn't it wasn't as easy as to grit she let me know you know that she got a little disoriented but things went well and she was on grael and she was going to go ahead and taxi over tie the plane down take a little break she texted that she ate lunch refueled and because one Runway was closed for repairs she used an alternate Runway heading in a different direction still the last Lady leg was the easiest the Flight Plan called for Mackenzie to follow the Big Horn River over the
yellowtail Dam make her Landings at the Billings Airport and then a final short flight back to Laurel where Bobby was waiting of course I'm excited now we're you know we're really rolling we don't have far to go here now closer to home it was midafternoon McKenzie's mother hadn't heard from her for a while and suddenly sensed something off had that Eerie feeling you know the kind that you don't entertain as a parent her father driving to work felt it too something just wasn't right and it's an h
our out of town I turned around and came back Bobby expected to hear from McKenzie about 3:00 3 came and went she busied herself stayed close to the phone and that went on tick tick tick there when did you start to worry about 3:15 I started thinking she should be there by now Bobby called the Billings Tower no one had heard from McKenzie you try to think the best she's landed somewhere um she's safe I'll hear from her but nothing and that's what 3:30 340 3:45 and about 350 I get a phone call fr
om flight service station they said your student is pass due I just want you to know in 5 seconds we will declare her missing ah worst words in the whole world McKenzie Morgan seems to have disappeared and for everyone who cares about her it's the beginning of a heart-stopping Odyssey when we return as a frantic search gets underway there's more bad news I asked her what the route was and my heart just sank when dat line [Music] continues Bobby Powers was living a flight instructor's worst night
mare 17-year-old McKenzie Morgan that natural young flyer and her special student was just gone just start thinking what did I do wrong did I miss something I didn't want to admit this is real but it was no time for second guessing is that have my airplane here I'll be off the ground in 15 minutes I'll be looking for her she climbed into her plane taxi to the gas pump for fuel the manager hurried over and he said we can't give you fuel we are not allowing anyone to buy fuel right now we need it
for our operation they were running low said the manager they had their own Charter and a firefighting operation to fuel what did you say I just looked at him Square in the eye and I said I need fuel and right now I'd kill you for fuel my girl is down I will have fuel and he got a big look on his face and he said give her all the fuel she wants just get her her fuel well they were fueling the plane Bobby got on the phone and began to organize a search party friends friends of friends and in minu
tes she and her husband were Airborne my husband said you have to call the parents worst day of my life and I did not want to do that but I wasn't brave enough to call her mother cuz I'm a mother so I did the next best thing I called her grandfather the pilot yes and I said McKenzie's missing and he said I will be in the airplane in 15 minutes the Ken's Grandpa drove to where her Uncle Jared was working is own 4:00 4:30 and uh my Dad pulled up and said MacKenzie's missing sorry and then finally
they called MacKenzie's mom Christie what was that like to get that called the bottom just kind of drops out you know you do you go you have that tendency to go dark for a second and you think I am not ready to plan a funeral they tried to stay positive after all they told themselves by now a posy of private Pilots was taking off making its way up in the air to look for her one of instructor Bobby's group of Searchers was Billy's Gazette photographer Larry Mayer a 30-year flight feather I asked
her what the route was and you know to be honest with you my heart just sank because I knew the terrain along the Route and it's it's not very good terrain such bad Terrain in fact that Larry was carrying an emergency kidy impact in case he found her alive I put together a sleeping bag some bottles of water some granola bars a handheld radio and a large caliper handgun because it's Grizzly country there's mountain lions there's you know coyotes it's not where you'd want to see yourself let alone
a a young girl Brian chzo was in his super CB he's a graduate of Bobby's flight school and he and all the pilots knew what might be waiting out there I think that every person that was in the air uh had had worst case scenarios planned through their minds 5:00 p.m. McKenzie had been missing over an hour counting Bobby and her husband and McKenzie's grandfather there were nine small planes in the air scouring the ground want to go over 275 7 over the radio they agreed to divide the miles and mil
es of Southern Montana and Northern Wyoming into a grid everybody was looking everywhere I mean there was guys heading north and south east and west you know someone would say okay I'm going to go look in the carbon Basin and someone else would say okay I'm going to go look you know along the north rim of the canyon you know your head's on a swivel you're you're looking looking looking and just hoping and praying that you're going to find that person as quickly as you can most of these Pilots ha
ve been un searching before they' found plain wrecks but rarely survivors the whole time up there in the search thinking in the back of your mind thinking that was always a concern they raced the clock Sundown was just a few hours away the stakes went way up if it got dark because if she had been injured and had not been found it would just add really add to the the chance that that she would end up dying out there coming up phone records provide the first clue to McKenzie's whereabouts but will
they help I was like well that makes no sense and then one of the search Pilots catches sight of something on the ground my first reaction was oh my god when dat line [Music] continues McKenzie Morgan's parents were frantic waiting for word of their missing daughter what could they do I was like well let ping the cell phone to see where she last made her call they asked the police to pull her phone record eventually learned she last used her phone at 2:30 half an hour before she was due back in
Billings after that nothing then they looked at the GPS coordinates of the call and oh no it was four miles four five miles south of Cody I was like that makes no I couldn't in my head fathom I was like well that makes no sense it's 180° MH the wrong way Mckenzie was supposed to be here in Billings airspace instead the phone paint south of Cody Wyoming up in the air Bobby heard the news and was alarmed Mckenzie was way too close to the mountains how could she be here you know I I'd watched her
flying skills I was totally confident that there was just no way she would become this confused Pen's uncle and grandfather moved their search to the area the Ping came from still no sign of McKenzie [Music] right not a single Searcher saw a clue anywhere there's not an airplane sitting at Fort Smith no there's not an airplane sitting at graille um no she didn't go back to Cody um she hasn't arrived back in Laurel McKenzie's playing like all such planes was equipped with an emergency Beacon an e
lt they call it which should go off off in a crash but there was no signal from any elt so what did that make you think that she's safe if her elt was going off they'd pick up the signal and we could find her so you're thinking okay this is a positive yeah unless unless it hadn't gone off because of something very very bad not having it meant that the airplane had crashed uh um very severely or was upside down or possibly burned Shadows lengthened in the deepening afternoon the forest Fire's Smo
ky tail blurred the ground beneath them and McKenzie's family all they had to hang on to was knowledge that the Searchers wouldn't quit was there saw us in that no I mean it was miserable I'm not going to lie up in the air they kept looking suddenly Larry mayor spotted a crashed plane right beneath him I guess I was just a little startled to be looking for an airplane and then see an airplane sitting there Brian saw it too my first reaction of seeing an airplane down below was oh my God I found
her but no he hadn't the wreckage was from a fatal crash Larry covered for the paper years earlier but it just adds more fuel to the fire that you know you're running out of number one you're running out of time it's getting dark this is probably what I'm going to find someplace up here they fought to focus through the evening Shadows Brian and his super cup equipped to fly low and slow skin the trees and Rocky Peaks you get into a place called Black Canyon which is you know vertical Cliff walls
and black Timber down in the bottom of it that you know it's like finding a needle in a hay stack in there by 800 p.m. Mckenzie was 5 hours overdue the rescue Pilots were TI and running out of fuel in daylight and then the authorities called we have passed along the search and rescue process to the Air Force at this time the military would take over the man said would send out a team in the morning and in 30 minutes Bobby and her friends would be ordered out of the air Bobby had one last area t
o search shell Canyon in the Big Horn mountains rough rugged hor terrain out of all the wrong ways she could have gone it would have been the worst she combed shell Canyon back and forth in the growing dark nothing and all that time I kept thinking why didn't I give her that hug why didn't I give her that hug I had given anything to give her just one hug the settings out in Mont in Wyoming could be a glorious thing but that evening for nine discouraged Pilots it was terrifying but of course they
were entirely unaware of the disaster and the drama they didn't see on the ground coming up that ground was here a forbidding Back Country right with danger it puts that Eerie feeling in your body makes the hair stand up on the back of your neck but this Hunter sees something even more troubling in the sky so the plane is Right flying right into a trap yep when day line [Music] continues nine small planes were about to give up their search for a missing teenage pilot hope dying with the Setting
Sun we all looked until the last Light you know the absolute last Light light so as the minutes take by the passage of time changes somehow doesn't it it do yeah it felt like days but here in the outskirts of a little place called Douglas Wyoming an Outdoorsman named Josh Alexander was about to get roped into the same story if you were given your choice of uh some way to spend two weeks do whatever you want what would it be uh I'd be in the mountain hun somewhere that's what I live for Josh's f
riend and colleague Nathan Cole feels just the same way I mean there's places yeah you can't you can go and not see people for days those are kind of the sweet spots for you yeah they're very relaxing very calm quiet in August of 2013 Josh and Nate planned to spend a few days in one of those sweet spots a place most of us will never see the aboras in Western Wyoming the most remote and spectacular mountains in the country the purpose of the trip to scout for big horn sheep not easy they live on
Jagged perches 10,000 ft up and more they are like ghosts there for a fleeing moment then gone again inhospitable country it's steep it's rugged it's all rock base camp was 9,000 ft up in an abandoned mining town called Kuran on the first day August 19th they saw five grizzly bears put that Eerie feeling in your body makes the hair stand up on the back of your neck you know Josh brought his horses Duke the Palamino and dirty devil or double D the stub one the next day was August 20th the very sa
me day McKenzie Morgan set off from Laurel Montana on her first solo Cross Country flight Nate and Josh were picking their way up a rocky Pathway to Grey bow path elevation 12,500 Double D didn't like it tried to turn and go home and in his thrashing slipped and Tumbl down the rocky slope dragging Josh with him I couldn't get kicked out of the sturs fast enough he went over and smashed my ankle and tore up his front leg also the horse cut its leg Josh sprained his ankle but give up go home no wa
y too tough for that even though you're hurly crazy and your horse is injured mhm why had to see what's on the other side didn't ride all that way for nothing so they pushed on about 300 yd to the top miles and miles of vast isolation around them in an average year said Park Rangers only one or two human beings ever set foot up here very windy when we got in the top of that pass it was probably 35 40 m our wind just howling around just screaming but oh the sights like a heard of out 200 of them
I was standing up there looking through my binoculars watching the milk in the bottom and I looked at them for maybe 2 minutes the sound of an airplane broke his concentration it was a little plane assess 172 I just kept getting louder and louder and louder first thing he thought was why are they down that low the second thought was alarm that plane was surrounded by sheer Mountain walls on all sides so the plane is Right flying right into a trap yep flying right into a rock wall they heard the
plane frontt up then watched it try to accelerate up and over the lowest Peak but soon as that plane cleared the top the wind caught it and just jerked the right wing of that airplane straight up in the air and basically turned it straight around and sent it crashing into the ground what I'd like to see that the first thing in your head was man I just watched a plane crash and then it sinks in and hits oh I just watched a plane crash and then thoughts start running through your head what are you
going to do who's in there you know who's in there how many are in there are they alive are they dead can I safely get myself in there to find out or not there's a cardinal rule of survival in the wilderness stick together the they broke it Josh new first aid decided he should look for survivors Nate was good with GPS coordinates so I gave Nate the GPS and the best horse I got and said you ride down to camp and get in the truck and go down to where you can call some help but separating and then
hurrying on that terrain was dangerous the horses fought to stay together fear was having that horse go down with Nate and then nobody would be able to make it to get down and call for help they slipped and slid it took Nate more than an hour to get to the top of the road he got in his truck and began a frantic drive down the mountain to reach an area with self service and as I was coming out I come around this corner and there was a guy standing in the road waving his hands I was like what in
the world the road was blocked by a smashed truck hanging halfway over the edge Nate helped the driver move his truck and went hurtling back down the mountain to get help meanwhile back at 12,000 ft Josh was a long half mile from the crash I sat there and glassed that plane for probably 5 minutes waiting to see if I could see movement in it or if anybody was going to crawl out of it or anything else and um nobody got out of it so I assume the worst and then as he kept looking at it something sur
prising happened then I could see some movement at the plane was it a person an animal too far away to see he couldn't just hurry over he had a sprained ankle an injured horse and to get to that crumpled plane he'd have to go down first a steep slippery slope I had to walk the horse all the way down to the bottom sinking in up to its knees in the dirt and rock carefully he coaxed the limping Double D toward the plane down the all the switchbacks and then bail off the trail and go down to the cre
ek he followed the creek bed and then as he worked his way toward the plane something caught his eye and he looked up and saw in the distance a girl walking in the creek what was that like to see it was a surprise it was a shock coming up McKenzie alive and telling us her story I knew the odds that I would survive that were very unlikely when dat line [Music] continues McKenzie Morgan was alive though stumbling along near a Mountaintop in God knew where she didn't expect to be for long she was v
ery very alone up here very cold and very scared certain her life was was over she made a video to tell her parents goodbye mom and dad I crashed my PL and I don't know if anyone will be able to find me out here and yet here she is to tell the astonishing story of the day she crashed in the Mountaintop in one of America's most isolated places and lived oh yeah even just thinking about it just brings me back at first she knew nothing and then in a day Ed recognition that she was alive and in terr
ible trouble she had little food no warm clothes no blanket for The Frigid night and no idea where she was only that she must have messed up somehow earlier in the day when she first set out everything had seemed so promising I took off and I was just so excited I didn't have any hitches going to Powell or Cody airport her problem started in gryo Wyoming when she had a hard time f finding the airport tucked away behind a mountain range I used my GPS and pulled up Google or found my phone just tr
ying to look for the airport and um I did find it but it was about 10 minutes just of of looking for it she landed at lunch refueled cuz I was kind of rushing myself after I fed up to get out of there because I was like well I wasted about 45 minutes here just eating and gassing up and everything McKenzie texted her instructor Bobby powers to let her know she was ready for takeoff heading home I was actually super excited for this leg of the trip cuz I was going to be overwat the whole way I had
something to follow the whole way there but somehow just after takeoff she transposed a zero in her GPS directional heading so instead of going Northeast toward home she flew Southwest and strayed into some of the tallest peaks in the country the absor mountains in Wyoming that one simple zero made a huge difference but at first it looked okay she followed a river as the pl said she should I was like I'm overwat I've got to be going the right way she was supposed to scurred a small Mountain nex
t and sure enough there was a peak it stopped obscured by smoke from the forest fire and then it dawned in her with a thump of anxiety she was flying too high I was supposed to be flying at a height of 7,500 ft and it got to the point where I was flying at 8500 and and the mountains were still up there still above me McKinzie knew Bobby wouldn't have sent her there into the mountain that's just not something she would do um something has to be wrong here so I got to try to call her there's no se
rvice she flew on alone no way to call for help forcing down the rising pad she barely missed some very tall trees and then finally it started to open up around me there's more space and it's like oh thank goodness I'm I'm almost to the airport after I get out of this curve I'll be right on my left side I can just land and calm down and then I will be able to go home and relax not quite rounded that curve and it's a dead end with mountains on all sides of me and my heart dropped McKenzie had flo
wn straight into a box canyon mountains towering on all sides she was trapped and then weirdly her desperate eye caught something otherworldly out my peripheral vision I see all this movement and I look over there and there's this huge herd of elk like about 200 head of them I saw you come along they heard me and they got scared and then a warning blared she was about to stall her only chance was to accelerate straight down then pull up and make it over the peak the ground is rushing at you now
exactly and this point I know that I could possibly overcome this mountain that's in front of me have then a huge blasting wind c a wing and I know I'm going down and while in my head I was thinking calmly like okay I've just got to just got to land this like a typical landing and I hear this screaming just loud screaming and then I realize oh my gosh that's me like I didn't realize I was doing it and in my head I'm totally calm but I'm just I'm just screaming uncontrollably she'd have to pull o
ff a perfect landing on a steep slope in a field of rocks impossible but no choice back wheels down first and then as I brought my nose down the front wheel got caught in the rocks and it flipped the plane upside down just like that yeah like hit touch and then just flip me how long she was out she isn't sure but when she came to and I'm hanging upside down like why am I not dead right now I'm not going to die in here like I said that out loud and it's just so determined that she was not killed
in her upside down and to plane was little short of miraculous but she was virtually uninjured even more so she unbuckled herself smashed through the front window took these pictures tried to text them maybe the GPS coordinates embedded in the photos would help someone find her but she could get no signal they weren't going anywhere so she tried to radio for help it's like Great Falls radio 516 Mike Alpha my plane is down like I'm in the mountain somewhere can you can you find me and um then the
re was no reply and I tried twice she smelled gas near the plane so she made a risky decision she would follow the creek and try to walk out I like well I've got to get out of here before this catch is on fire this seems to me you had a pretty lousy chance of being found but the only the only one chance really was if you were beside that plane exactly I knew I wasn't going the odds that I would make it and survive that Trek where very unlikely 12,000 ft above sea level hundreds of miles from now
here utterly alone she started walking when she set out that morning it had been a hot summer day she was wearing jeans and a light windbreaker but here in the mountains night would be bitter cold she didn't know it but she was heading down the creek bed right to the spot the hunters had seen five grizzly bears just the day before so at this point I'd walked about 20 minutes and I made a video to my parents mom and dad I crashed my plane it was awful like I'm crying and screaming and I just I fe
lt so bad McKenzie Morgan understood with an awful Clarity this was very likely the end after all coming up a mindboggling coincidence becomes McKenzie's only shot at rescue as soon as I saw him I started to scream was like help me help me help me and then her flight instructor starts to worry all over again I heard one of my friends say has anybody let Bobby know yet I'm like oh my god when dat line [Music] continues mom and dad has crushed my pleas Mackenzie Morgan had just made a goodbye vide
o on her phone to tell her her parents one last time as she faced her death up here that she loved them my plan was just walk until I couldn't walk anymore and maybe if I got low enough I could climb a tree and sleep in that or just make a spot on the ground for myself she kept walking she had sprained her knee in the crash and slowed her down it was starting to swell I was just limping a lot there were rocks everywhere and it kept over those she stumbled on for nearly an hour and then in the de
pths of her despair I get on the top of one of these Hills and I see this horse and I like there's a horse out here and then she saw there was a man with the horse a kind of scary man big blooded from his fall wearing a gun the hunter Josh Alexander as soon as I saw him I started to scream like help me help me help me and I immediately you know made her sit down and gather her thoughts and everything cuz her adrenaline was rushing yeah big time was she she clearly upset oh yeah yeah you know I s
tarted asking her her name her age where she's from where she was flying to where she come from just mainly trying to check for head injury you know make sure everything was okay what were the chances in all that empty space so rarely visited by humans it was almost Beyond mathematical calculation like two needles finding each other in a very big hay stack I asked him where I was he's like well you're in matiti Wyoming like I don't know where that is they looked at her map matiti wasn't even on
it and so this unlikely Trio a banged up Hunter a bang up pilot and a bang up horse limped down the treacherous mountain side in the Gathering dark not knowing what would be waiting for them at the bottom when finally and it was right at dark but I could still see through my binoculars so I looked in the trail head parking lot and spotted a sheriff's deputies pickup and Nate standing there and they were looking back at us after his long interrupted trip down the mountain to get help Josh's buddy
Nate had made it and I told her I said we'll be all right right there's help then she got real emotional again and started to cry then yeah I think it was tears of relief and Nate watching them had trouble understanding what he was seeing this young girl was the pilot I couldn't believe it and most uh people her age don't even drive yet I mean let know fly a plane the sheriff brought McKenzie down to an ambulance that hadn't been able to make it up the mountain as soon as there was sell service
the sheriff called McKenzie's parents Steve and Christie sick with worry at home thank God goodness for that call he said we found your daughter and she's she's alive and then I lost service with them or it broke out I said all right get your stuff Christy we're going to Cody MacKenzie's flight instructor Bobby was at that moment about to give up and turned toward home heartbroken when on her radio she heard something rather terrifying I heard one of my friends say has anybody let Bobby know ye
t I'm like oh my God let Bobby know what and I said I'm on what's going on and they said they found her she's safe what a relief I just started crying Bobby too headed straight to Cody I couldn't get there fast enough the kenji's uncle and grandfather flew there too that was the the best moment we could had that she was found and healthy Larry mayor took this Photograph search planes headed home silhouetted against a smoky Sunset to Mark the moment it was an unbelievable feeling and then roughly
12 hours after she took off that morning McKenzie her family and her flight instructor were all at the hospital together and safe I think until you lay eyes on her and you see that she's just fine I mean it it it was it was beautiful Bobby got to give McKenzie that hug after all I call her my Miracle child a lot of people said to her she should go buy a lottery ticket her grateful parents were able to drive McKenzie home later that night on the way she showed them the goodbye video she made on
the mountain I don't know if anyone be find out here I was like don't play that again I mean I had almost went out the road the next day the hunters headed home and encountered yet another person who needed help a man who had slipped on wet rocks and broken his leg badly and so they made a third rescue in just two days just angels of Mercy on that trip mad turn of events there we never seen one big horn sheep that entire trip but we decided we were there for a reason it was there to help people
why I don't know but everything turned out good you must be a person with a sense of gratitude these days yeah definitely am because everyone's like well somebody's got a plan for you it's like you know what you're right you're right so I'll make the most of it McKenzie by the way finished high school and the softball season got into college went to prom and in December 2013 all right honey bye okay she climbed into a little airplane to finish that solo Cross Country [Music] flight McKenzie Morg

Trails and truck an hour away they are not in the middle of nowhere. Some of this was a bit exaggerated
