I try to find influences that are outside of the cinema Circle to bring I'm going more toward painting or to I try to to create a space for the mind to exist uh uh outside of the many influence we have so uh I'm not a director who likes to reference uh uh other people on said I try to uh yeah I noticed between Dune part one and part two the the black and white is really really emphasized in in the villain scenes in part two and I'm curious about um your utilization of of that black and white and
why it's villainous and I'm saying this well also dressed in black and white the book is a lot about the influence of the environment on the psyche of character on the culture if you want to know about the fan you look at the desert what you understand from the desert it gives you clues of how they will behave all that they strategies to survive etc etc and I wanted to create the same kind of similar thing with G Prime the planet of the Aran and to have the the same approach as Frank clber did
with Aris for the fman G Prim is a plastic World artificial work cut from nature a totalitarian environment where the ruler are are Fascist and and and I thought that this idea to subtract color from their world will say something about their way of thinking and and and uh I came with this idea that the sunlight will be monochromatic black and white Greg frer of course loved the idea and he he brought himself the idea of infrared cameras uh in order to shoot this which will bring it black and wh
ite that the skin will become translucid milky and you will see the veins of the character and the eyes will be suddenly very pery and like reptilian that way of using IR was bringing a very alien feeling to the scene that I really loved and quite a unique look for for giddy Prime but it was there was no way back uh there was no way back from that I warned the the studio that that's the want the way I wanted to do it and that there will be it will be black and white like that there we could woul
d not bring back the color I love to do things on camera and and uh uh Greg and I had a blast doing that I was reminded of another Deni CLA deny actually and the the lighting in choreography of Bo Travi during the fight scenes and then also inar bergman's seventh seal Austin Butler's character reminded me of death and I'm wondering if I'm on the money at all with those references in fact uh uh the seven seal was was a reference specifically for Peter the v in the part one that was one of the uh
visual reference that jacn West referred to and I'm a big Bergman fan so yeah I'm happy you you notice there's like the way we approach close-ups maybe sometime there's something that's the impact of some Bergman movie that I'm still uh in h and what was the first one you said uh a Boi and clar yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah it's a movie I absolutely adore there are many influences for part two is ADD like some references for color palet arting like um I remember having part of zir Jesus of Nazar
eth also scores The Last Temptation Of Christ that were influenced but uh they were um background influence when I make a movie I try it and it's very arrogant and pretentious I try to win a Zone where I try to get rid of the influence of other voices which is of course impossible because you're always a product of the influence but but I try as much as possible so I try to focus and to bring something that uh uh fresh that uh uh um that's my want Mak

Man, I was literally thinking the other day how great it was that they’ve given Giedi Prime this weird black & white sun because it means the Harkonnens have been shaped by their environment in the same way the Fremen and Sardaukar are in the book. And here Denis is saying that was exactly his motivation, to follow the book’s theme of environments shaping populations. The guy understands the source material so well.
