Traveling Desi

What’s the target now? You need 5 runs, right? Okay, they need 5 runs and we need 5 wickets. And how many overs are left? 12 Overs. Oh. That’s bad. What a bad play, take me in your team the next time. I’ll make a few runs too. Okay. So we got 20 samosas packed. Now we are headed towards the match location. I am Traveling Desi. And this story is of the day when I left the cricket match to head towards the Desi/Indian neighborhood to eat samosas. The reason for a day’s delay in this video, is due
to high demand, on the follow up vlog on Hardeep. It won’t fly away. What? It won’t fly away, No, I don’t want to drive. So the questions related to his trucking life which we left out in the previous video. We will add that part towards the end of this video. But before that let’s explore the desi neighborhood here. This is the area which features a large desi community. There are a lot of Indians and Pakistanis living here. In this part of Montreal, you will find Indian grocery (stores), templ
es, Gurudwaras, buffet places, you get everything here. And I’ll be going inside one of those to grab some samosas. Indian restaurants and people.. can be seen in large numbers. There are plenty of shops and businesses run by Indian and Pakistani people. Where you get everything ranging from Halal food, sherwani, and even dosas. This is wonderful. I’m elated. I know that I’m going to get Indian food, it’s time. As we entered the lane and rolled down our windows, there’s an aroma of that Indian k
itchen and spices. Whether it’s dosas being made, or chole/chickpeas. But we need to head towards the samosas. But we need to find a parking first. This is a problem in Montreal. Finally, we had to settle for paid parking on the street. I haven’t seen so many Indian restaurants in one lane before, even in India. They are lined up one after another. Whether it’s dosa, South Indian, North Indian, Punjabi food, sweets, halal, vegetarian, everything is available. We have reached Little India. We hav
e parked in a wonderful spot. And as soon as we reached, we spotted this sherwani shop. You get Indian suits and ethnic wear here, you can get clothes altered here as well. And this area is in equal parts both Little India and Little Pakistan. The place we did the street parking, right in front was a Punjabi shop selling clothes. But this is a Pakistani shop guys, because there’s a huge part of Punjab which is in Pakistan as well. And with that is the salon for the African community, since there
are immigrants living from a multitude of countries here. And among others, there are Pakistani halal meat shops and restaurants as well. And a lot of desi shops as well. You can get a buffet here in $9-$12 easily. As we parked our car on the street, it was paid and it cost us $1.5 for an hour. If you like a foreign girl here, and we have to get you married, you can get the sherwani from here, no need to go to India. And after a little chit chat, we reached the most iconic sweet stop here. Samo
sas. What will you have Gulab Jauun? Samose and Jalebi. After such a long time, months, I had it the last time in Paris. Now you might think that so much excitement for something so mundane as a samosa? But if an Indian hasn’t been to his home country for over 5 months, it’s a big deal for him to get samosas and jalebi. The people who like jalebi with samosas verses samosas with Gulab Jamun, let me know in the comments below. First of all, tell me how long have you been in Canada? 35 years. 35 y
ears? 35 years. Okay and where are you originally from and what is your name? My name is Praveen Akhtar. Praveen Akthtar. Yes, and I’m from Pakistan. Okay. Now tell me which part of Pakistan are you from? Sangala Hill. Sangala? It’s Sangala Hill. Which district? District Shivpooram* in Punjab. Okay. In Punjab. Near to Faislabad, since Punjab is incredibly huge, I have heard of the names of bigger cities. But this is a small city and there are a lot of us from there. So our family too migrated f
rom Pakistan. Okay. My grandfather was posted in Peshawar. He was a Patwari. Okay. But before that he used to live in a place called Shakharthand. It’s called Khyber Pakhtunkhwa now. I’m originally from Sargodha. Okay. Sargodha is about 25 kilometers away from our district. 25 kilometers, quite close by. Yeah. Okay. Your father might have known my grandfather. Such connections are possible. Now tell me where did you learn to make such wonderful samosas. They are amazing. We got it as inheritance
. We had a shop in *patsah* as well which sold sweets. And we opened a shop here too. So you make them yourselves? Yes, I have a few employees as well, they work for me. The recipe is mine. I don’t give it away to anyone else. Yeah, you should keep your recipe as a trade secret. All right. Wonderful. Dip it, drench it and eat. I can’t stop eating, it’s genuinely that good. Amazing. Very good. And I saw that people get huge boxes of these packed quite frequently. So this means that samosas are so
ld in bulk here as well? All these people, but it in bulk and sell in wholesale prices. There are a lot of people from Downtown which do this. We have a lot of people coming in. Okay. So they buy it in bulk and re-sell it in their stores. Okay, so you are the main source of samosas here, in Montreal. Yeah, by God’s Grace, quite a bit. Okay. Even the sweets go out in batches. Yeah, I saw the sweets, I ate Gulab Jamuns. The samosas were truly delightful, reminded me of home. And the accompanying s
auce was too good. This is open from 9 am to 10 pm. Morning 9 to evening 10. Okay, so you are here the whole day? When do you go out? When do you get the time to spend it with your family? My family is with me, even the kids. We live upstairs and do business downstairs. Okay. What are you eating? Wow. Milk cake. And laddoo made out of flour. Even Haldirams is fail in front on this taste. I’m not even kidding. My kids are not joining the family business. My kids, my son is an engineer. Okay. And
my daughter is at the University, so she does her own thing, she too does not work here. Okay, in the University. Okay. Thanks. We’ll try a little bit of this. I had to get 30 samosas packet but they just have 20 in stock, so I thought it’ll be too late if I wait 20 minutes. The team is waiting. But for now, our team’s batting was done and they started their turn to bowl. When we reached back, we got to know that our team was sadly out quite quickly. And a very few people scored in double digits
. Out! Out. Done. Wow. But the desire for a comeback was quite strong. Then the score was leveled and I set myself down to take the winning shot on camera. The matched finished on a wide ball. Our team lost the match, I thought the samosas would cheer them up. But the spirit was that Younis bhaiya offered the first samosa to the winning team’s President. I was new in Canada, the only thing I knew how to do was play cricket. So I knew cricket. Okay. Then we got started, there was a huge age group
among us players. Okay. So we represented Quebec on a national level in Under 19 division. So how old were you when you first moved here? I was 13 years old. 13 years, so your family moved here? Yes. Okay. So we all just knew how to play cricket. In fact, I just got a bat and a ball with me when I moved here from my home in Pakistan. Now usually there’s a lot of ongoing heat between the India and Pakistan in recent times. So I thought, I’ll ask them what they think. The old ongoing rivalry, I t
hink we need to get out of that. Yeah. If we can forgive the British for 200 years. True. Then we can forgive each other too. We should move on. Right x3. It’s time, you know, just like Europe moved on. The North Americans moved on. France and Germany is the biggest example, historic..English. Definitely. Then I got to meet the President of the Indian sports club. So I asked him about the amount of support that the government has provided their endeavors. They made these for us, it’s ready but t
here are so many teams that we don’t have enough grounds. Grounds and all. We need at least 4-5 grounds. They you can play more cricket. Okay. We have 2 grounds on the weekend, and we have a lot of different teams. So you might have to give them alternate turns. And as is you have limited time to play. Because the weather here is really unpredictable, it starts raining all of a sudden, all the afternoon games are canceled. Okay. Okay so they have been cancelled in the past. Yes. Weather is quit
e a challenge here. I don’t think it’s possible to play cricket indoors. We practice indoors. Okay. So the net practice, etc happens indoors. But after finishing off the match and the samosas, it was time to leave. So let’s get back to this gentleman. But before that, an important message. The match is over but the shot captured was truly incredible. It was a wonderful experience. If you come to Canada for studies or through PR to move, I’ll put the links to these clubs in the description. You c
an sign up there and play cricket here. If you enjoyed this video, Please don’t forget to hit the Like button. And for more such videos and their timely updates, Please don’t forget to hit the Subscribe button and the Bell icon. But we had a lot of fun. The Samosas were truly out of this world. The spirit of the game here is noteworthy, for both the Indian and Pakistani teams. Amazing. They co-exist in harmony, being from the same sub-continent. They have a shared love among each other. It’s rea
lly a good experience, very nice, very pure, very refreshing, and very entertaining as well. They have a lot of fun here as well. Which bottle should we get? What ever you say. I don’t drink. I don’t drink at all. I have never had a single drop in my life. I’m keeping this. I won’t give it back. I won’t. He already lost one of these. Okay, then have it back. Do give your blessings. It depends on the Almighty what the truck will do. Usually, the cost of maintenance, we have to pay that in every 3
-4 months. How much does it cost? $400. Okay. Fine. It includes grease, etc as well, and all the routine things, including the cost of diesel as well. The tank alone is 700-800 liters. Okay. There are times where the truck won’t start. So if that happens in the middle of the road. Hmm. You have to call a tow trick. My cousin has a tow trucking company in Toronto. You have to call a tow truck in that case and they charge anywhere between $200-$400 just for the call. Okay. So you end up spending a
round $1000-1500 for getting the vehicle towed from the road. So it’s better that when you are visiting a garage, get a complete maintenance and check done, so that your vehicle does not break down on the road. Otherwise you might end up paying 2-3 times the normal amount. Have you ever been in an accident? God willing it doesn’t happen. When I was new to driving, there was one incident. It wasn’t a serious incident, but a minor one. I was reversing the vehicle and I didn’t sport a pole behind a
t the blind spot. Okay. And my truck was hit on the pole. I used to drive a company truck back then. Okay. So in case of an accident, there’s no risk as such. So I called the company and told them about it, they asked me to take the pictures of the accident. Okay. They said if no one was injured or if there is no property damage, it’s not a problem. Okay. But if someone’s property was in fact damaged, take photos of that as well and exchange their contact information. Okay. So that they can clai
m the insurance. Okay. So I haven’t caused damage to anyone’s property til date. I pray it remains this way. And just 3 days ago, I missed a stop sign. I have had only 2 accidents so far, both minor. So, I hit the stop sign with my trailer. So it wasn’t a big thing. So the good part about this country is that the insurance is used to pay for the damages. Okay. So there’s not a major risk. And also, the rules are quite strict, you get a rigorous training so that people generally drive in a safe m
anner. Okay. There’s no such thing as rash driving. Everybody learns the ropes before driving on the road. A person cannot drive a truck before getting prior training. Okay. Okay. So do you need to change to winter tires during the snow as well? No, the truck uses same tires. Okay. So does it create any problem? A little bit, yes. For example, if you look at the roads, they keep cleaning them at regular intervals. Okay. And they keep putting salt as well. But in case of a snow storm, and there’
s a lot of snow. Then the roads get covered and it increases the chance of an accident. Okay. For example, I’ll show you the photos. In fact, this is from this year’s winter. I parked my truck in the evening and when I came back the next day, it was covered under 5-6 inches of snow. Okay. And I tried moving the truck, but it wouldn’t budge. So the tires get stuck, due to the ice and snow. The tires would spin but there’s no traction. Okay. In that case, we have to put salt below the tires. Right
. It’s a bit hard, but everything slows down in the winters. So if we drive at 60 in the summers, we have to slow down to 40 during the winters while driving. It gets a bit slow but in Canada, the work doesn’t stop. It does not stop. You have to keep on moving. Compared to summers, you have to be a little more careful in the summers. So these are the answers to the questions which we missed in the previous video. If there are any other queries that remain, do let me know in the comments. I’ll on
ce again get in touch with him. For now, thank you so very much for watching the video guys.
