Ingredients: 1 cup of white urad dal (mash daal) 3 cups of water Salt to taste 2 tablespoons of oil 1 teaspoon of cumin seeds 1/4 teaspoon of asafoetida (hing) 1/4 teaspoon of turmeric powder 1/4 teaspoon of red chili powder 1/4 teaspoon of garam masala 2 green chilies, slit 2 tablespoons of chopped coriander leaves 2 tablespoons of butter Steps: Wash the dal and soak it in water for about an hour. Drain the water and transfer the dal to a pressure cooker. Add salt and 3 cups of water and cook for about 15 minutes or until the dal is soft and mushy. Heat oil in a small pan and add cumin seeds and asafoetida. When the seeds crackle, add turmeric powder, red chili powder, garam masala, and green chilies. Fry for a few seconds and then pour this tempering over the cooked dal. Mix well and simmer for another 10 minutes on low heat.
