LIVING IN RICHMOND VA

there's such creative stuff that people uh dress  up but you just sit there and just watch how just these mobs and mobs of different kind of  interpretation of zombies little zombies Big G zombies um older zombies very young little baby  [Music] zombies hey guys this is Erin and if this is your first time to our Channel and you  want to learn all there is to know about living in Richmond Virginia tap that like button hit  subscribe subscribe and click that little bell so you're notified every ti
me we release a new  video hey I'm Aaron mton and welcome back to live in Richmond Virginia today I am super excited  about what we're talking about real estate's great but if you live somewhere you need to know  about all the different things that are going on throughout the year so what better way to get to  know my area than to tell you about each month what sort of Arts or cultural things are going to  be going on around the area so stick around I'm going to tell you all about it January we
kick  it off with with wonderful film festivals there are a couple different ones there's the Richmond  International Film Festival that is held right at the bird theater and if you've never had a chance  to go downtown to um The Bird Theater it's right on Cary Street which is an awesome spot to hang  out so many amazing restaurants really cool um eclectic unique shops um just a really nice  experience to go down the bird theater is a beautiful theater and the funniest thing is that  they always
would do like little dollar movies uh that they would show there throughout the  year and I had lived here in Richmond forever I had invited to several different events and it  probably wasn't until the fifth time I had been to the Bird Theater that I actually looked up and saw  the amazing uh paintings and artwork that was on the ceiling and also on the sides of the theater  and all of a sudden I wasn't paying attention to the kind of Ratty seats I believe they've done  a renovation now but al
so I was like this is the Bird Theater this is why everyone Hypes it up  so much so I'm super excited that that's where they're going to be doing the film festival in  January if for movie Buffs you're like you know all right Richmond Virginia are there actually any  movies that have been shot here and there actually are some big major ones um Hannibal uh Mission  Impossible 3 uh one of my absolute favorites Lincoln um Evan Almighty and also Harriet so  this is a great spot if you're a movie buf
f uh to check out one of these F film festivals because  there are things that happen here in Richmond also January is another Film Festival it's actually  the environmental um Film Festival that they do right here in RVA they hold this also at the  bird theater and that's something that's really important to me urine dear to my heart and for  anyone who is a fellow leave everything better Ambassador I am big about making sure that we get  all of the trash particularly the plastic out of our Wat
ers Way waterways out of the James and any  of the smaller tributaries that things go into and that environmental Film Festival also goes over  into Maymont as as well all right let's go into February which of course is Black History Month  um and Richmond is certainly rich on history there the black history uh Museum and Cultural Center of  Virginia is somewhere um off of uh it's actually in Jackson Ward and they do all sorts of different  events there during uh Black History Month in February
then you have the Elba uh folklore  society's annual down home family reunion and that's held right off off of car street and that's  where they do really cool traditional African uh dance and African-American folktales and they do  all of that through storytelling and all sorts of different dances by local artists so you're  getting a true feel of Richmond March you have um the beautiful Richmond Symphony Orchestra that's  going to pform at the carpenter theater and one of my absolute favorite
Rich Museum which is the  Virginia Museum of Fine Art arts or as this locals call the vmfa and some different exhibits they'll  be going on during that they'll be have artistic Innovations seeing the sound inspirational prints  and then you also besides the music you have the RVA French film festival another thing and of  course where's it going to be the bird theater and April of course you're going to have all sorts of  things to do with flowers books and art of course you have the Richmond In
ternational Book Festival  that's held at my absolute favorite Louis Ginter Botanical Gardens with it being in April it is  going to be absolutely stunningly beautiful uh the spring in Richmond is one of our most beautiful  times of years and I will tell you this not only can you go to that um Festival but you also can  enjoy one of the best gift shops and the onsite lunch in spots um this is not just for ladies um  bring the gentlemen and um all ages are going to enjoy it I promise then you've
got the Richmond  tattoo and Art Festival um little known fact but I'm going to share it with you of my family I the  only boring one who does not have any tattoos so that's why I have to get this cool Little Rocker  jacket to channel my um my inner um Rebel that has never obviously come out then of course also in  April you have the famous ukrops Monument Avenue uh 10k race now we're in May let's talk talk about  all the amazing things that go on in May so the First Fridays of every month you h
ave Arts walk  which is on Broad Street and uh sidewalk stale they'll do sidewalk stales and opening all sorts  of exhibits and live performances so a good time for everyone then of course we have the very  famous Richmond Greek festival which is held right off of U Melbourne Avenue the absolute best  best Greek food and you don't have to be Greek to enjoy those um you know if you have a particular  kind of baklava that you love um and the deales and all the different Greek food and lots of  ama
zing um dances and music and all sorts of things just good f for everyone so of course rvr  RVA has their cultural their local um uh during that time they also have things down at all the  different farmers markets where they bring out all the food trucks um I have an absolute favorite  one and and may is when everything kind of kicks off right at Memorial Day and mine is the south of  the James that they hold right at the Forest Hill uh Park but they have them all over the Richmond  area they h
ave one downtown they definitely have one on the West End they obviously have one up  in the Lakeside which would be north side of the city and then things up in ashin and again they  run those um every Saturday from Memorial Day to Labor Day so it's a great way to find all the  local Artisans and um the beautiful flowers the the wonderful organic food lots of yummy goodies  and of course all the amazing food trucks then of course you have the Dominion Energy uh River  Rock at Browns Island wher
e they have all sorts again food trucks local musics um the watercraft  demonstrations really fun I loved it that they had a bunch of canoes and paddle boards all  out there so just a really really good time and um even better is that they are very focused  upon cleaning up the river they have a lot of the volunteer groups there signing up people to help  with uh doing all sorts of things I wish I had my little sticker right now um it's it says that I'm  um it's instead of a a game changer I'm a
James changer because we're talking about our beautiful  James River also really fun thing that you can do at uh the river rock is they do the dog jumping  competitions which I love and it's essentially what they do is you get all the puppies that  are really good jumpers and performers they have a big giant pool all the people like stand  around and they've got their owner I don't know if they get up on the platform with them or if  they stand on the side and essentially they run up the steps
and then they launch like they throw  toys and they see whoever can jump the absolute uh further it is so much fun to watch all the dogs  they're absolutely having a ball and it's perfect because you know may it's already starting to get  a little little hot around here then of course we are in June and back to lots more festivals a big  one is the Richmond Jazz Festival which is held right at Maymont um another one um is the broad  appeti rather than the bone appetite and that is actually throu
ghout the month of June where they  have week uh weekly specials that they run at all of different um Richmond um restaurants so some  examples of some plac that I know I've had some really great ones during the time uh tiop Pablo  leha uh meter um then you've got another great Festival which is the Richmond Bacon Festival  that's held right down at the 17th Street Market which is right downtown and where they do their  regular um Saturday uh farmers markets down there once you get into a July o
f course you know what  there's going to be all sorts of different amazing spots where you can see fireworks on the 4th um I  mean some of the big renowned ones would be like Browns Island um one of my favorites would be the  Swift Creek Reservoir definitely if you're going out into Midlothian or Chesterfield County to go  to the Swift Creek make sure you know someone who lives in brander Mill or Wood Lake um so that you  can essentially park your car there and walk over I made the mistake with
my husband one year of  trying to get parking uh we drove around for 2 and 1/2 hours didn't see any fireworks and we  finally said you know what we're just going to call it quits then of course we have our wonderful  amusement park which is only about 20 minutes from anywhere you are in uh Richmond Virginia and  that's right there at Kings Dominion which is right there in Doswell and they have fabulous  fabulous um things then of course you've got um the RVA makers Fest which is held right at ou
r  beautiful Science Museum that's right downtown um another one is the Virginia Museum of History and  culture and that's right at Arthur Ash Boulevard and they offer all sorts of just specials about  um the roots of American history and Richmond is definitely very ingrained in our American history  August you have all sorts of fun things to include the Richmond International Dragon Boat Festival  which is right on the James um and it launches right from Rockets Landing if you watch any of  our
other videos that's on the east side of henrio that actually butts right up against the county  and it's not exactly what you would think it is I know a lot of people think it's just everyone  dressing up like dragons it's actually people are out in the boats uh doing all sorts of races  it's really really cool then you have the Richmond International another Film Festival of course back  at the bird theater and then a really special one which is the Filipino Festival which is held um  at Our L
ady of uh uh lordis uh Catholic church and it's like all your favorite uh cultural things  and and that is over in Glenn Allen by the way you enjoy all your favorite foods like um Lea lean  um Panet lpia pork adabas EMP patas Torin and the hollow hollow then of course another amazing  Festival that I love is uh the Watermelon Festival which is right at Cary Street um and everything is  themed around watermelons so all sorts of amazing drinks all sorts of amazing contests having do  with watermel
on of course you're going to have all the different artists out there doing all  sorts of fun artwork and have in all sorts of fun like merch so you can remember going into  do that of course you've got the Latin jazz and salsa Festival which is held right at dogwell  Dell um Amphitheater so lots of festivals during that time and just remember it does get hot so  you're going to want to hydrate September lots of fun things still to do and of course a really  great time of year you have the James
River Film Festival which is right there at the vmfa then you  have the Richmond Folk Festival weekends um it's it's a weekend long Festival that's right there  at Browns Island back to the RVA street art um Festival um and its murals that are right on the  street and also on the side of the buildings in October we have so many fun things particularly  in Richmond to do all sorts of Halloween and hun nightmare weekend which is a in Richmond which  is a Halloween themed convention it's held in O
ctober usually kind of mid and it's the Greater  Richmond Convention Center so you've got lots of room room to spread out and it is so much fun 3  days you'll have all sorts of scary celebrities we do all sorts of parties all sorts of fun  vendors and gaming creepy cosplay just super super fun for everyone all ages everyone can go in  uh enjoy it sort thing and if you're interested in catching some for this year message me below and  I'll help you get the hookup for some tickets then you got the
hauns of ghost tours that go through  shako bottom Churchill Oregon Hill shakos slip and uh that is a really cool thing here in Richmond  lots of History definitely some old buildings all right and so this is a little bit of a a dig to  Baltimore Maryland you guys think that you guys have Edgar alen Poe that he belongs to well guess  what he's part of Richmond too so we have the PO Film Festival that's right at the edar Alan po  Museum which yes is in Richmond not in Baltimore here's a funny li
ttle story for you which actually  is very much part of my family if anyone does not know this already I ended up marrying my middle  school sweetheart who we I met um in seventh grade home room or by the lockers I can't remember  exactly which one it was um truth be told and I've got some heels on right now uh he was shorter  than me when we met he still doesn't admit it to this year and I think it's been 34 35 years since  we've known each other but I was technically just a little bit taller t
hank goodness he continued to  grow but anyways we did an amazing field trip uh to um a a uh to the mosque which is now the alra  at theater and the thing that we went to we went to the theater and we went to see um a performance  all about edra and Po and all the different uh where they uh they acted all the different plays  and poems and what have you so definitely my favorite so I can remember besides when I was you  know you know giggling and looking around trying to find my uh my now husban
d uh to see where he  was you know I make you know giggle he was too cute and uh too cool for me at the time but you  know whatever um my favorite pose were like a Telltale Heart and a c a CK of a monot um a monato  all I can remember is them talking about you know the the heart you know like being underneath the  floorboards and it like beating beating beating really it's very very uh maab and of course the  guy coming out and I think that was the one where they like locked them behind that's p
robably a c  of a Monti I think when they like um walled them in and they got them all he got them all drunk and  it was like the guy that came out and he was like okay this is my best impression Figo Figo Figo  Figo that's stuck in this brain again that was a very long time ago all right I digress October  if you're in Richmond for any amount of time uh in October make sure that you time it around um  that's also why you got to live here because you be there anytime is they do the zombie walk r
ight  off of Cary town in Cary Town notice that there are a lot of fun like cool things that happen  over in Cary town so go get a seat at Cary Town Burger and you can watch it all and um they I  don't I don't think they've changed that they usually hold it during the day and we are talking  about all ages all kinds of people didn't know how many people really loved um zombies but there are  such creative stuff that people uh dress up but you just sit there and just watch how just these  mobs an
d mobs of different kind of interpretation of zombies little zombies Big G zombies um older  zombies very young little baby zombies all that walk around it's it's super fun you'll definitely  uh get a kick out of it once we get into November there's still so much to do around the Richmond  area to include the James River writers conference and they do that right at the Greater Richmond  Convention Center so I want people to know that if you're coming from areas that are larger  and you're used I
mean that there's always something going on and you think hey I'm going to  go ahead and simplify in life and move to just a a much smaller or what we would call a mid-grade uh  City or uh midsize City area you don't be afraid to come to Richmond as you can see I'm I'm just  talking about just a handful of different places we always have things going on and this is just a  fun way to get family or friends that don't live in the area to come in here that you still can  enjoy lots of cultural and
art events and still enjoy a very you know simple way of life without  all the congestion and craziness we've got another um uh Festival that is held right at the paramont  theater they also hold one at the Violet uh Crown the CBR theater and that is another Festival that  they're doing right there in November and then of course you have the Dominion Energy um Garden of  Lights which lights up all the nights during the holiday they start that in November got a planned  a trip there to they do o
ne at lisis gter um it's just absolutely beautiful they light everything  up and they actually run that into January um the nice thing they also do and we'll talk about that  a little bit in deuss number is they bring some different extra things in during that time back to  Cary Town we've got another amazing walk it's an unusual one uh so buckle up um it is the Krampus  walk and it's the very first part of uh December correlating with um internationally whenever  they do like uh St Nick's Day o
r any of that that's when Krampus walk is and I believe Krampus  um originates from Germany if I'm not mistaken um if you have uh wondered about some of the the odd  tales that come from around uh the world Krampus is definitely a scary one and it's about I think  it's children if they don't behave that Krampus this like scary monster thing is going to come  out of the forest and eat the kids so um kind of like the Zombie Walk everybody is dressed like  uh krampuses and they go marching down um
uh K Street so a fun one to see very interesting then  you've got the like I said the Dominion Energy garden festival lights um that's right there  at uh Maymont um so much like the one they do at Louis gter they also do one at Maymont which  is beautiful if you haven't been there all the different Gardens are going to be lit up um even  you know all the Japanese maples they have all sorts of um cute refreshments and adult beverages  yummy yummy um adult beverage uh hot chocolate my personal fav
orite then of course they they have  all the different little lights that come with your tickets and you just can go on through  there it's so fun for everyone and anyone uh go enjoy that you'll really love it of course  uh what is December without the Quin essential Nutcracker ballet which they hold right there at  the carpenter theater so you don't have to go to DC you don't have to go to Baltimore you don't  have to go down to norick or even to Charlotte you can go right here in our nice litt
le town  then you've got uh again the garden Fest that I talked about that was right there at Louis genter  so in December the cool thing about is when they uh open things up is that they actually host a  big um toy train Village they bring all those toy trains up from a really neat hardware store that  is in Blackstone for IRG which is about like 45 minutes or an hour south of Richmond uh the toy  trains are absolutely to die for the kids love it um the older gentlemen uh that were really that
are really into that love to come out and you know I'm going to I'm going to admit I enjoyed watching  all the trains and how they've set everything up it was really neat the same time they also do a  gingerbread house contest and there's some really creative people that come out and do things of  course you have the RVA illuminates um where they do all that uh down at the kuana plaza right there  in RVA and that's getting ready for bringing in the New Year uh so there is just so much so much
to do here in our little Richmond area if you love The Arts if you love the C uh cultural events  you're not going to miss it out in here and we have them all across the board in all the counties  and downtown as well um so I'm super excited about you coming and checking out if you have any  special events that you love to go to each year or you've heard about um make sure to comment  below and tell us about it so we can make sure to spread the word to everyone and so I can go check  them out as
