that like button if you enjoy the tale thank you lovelyz this week we have dragons and magic for all those who love a fun fantasy adventure there's nothing that screams fantasy quite like a dragon except maybe a unicorn but you'll have to wait a bit longer for a story with one of those the hobbit was my first introduction to fantasy fiction outside of fairy tales and i will never forget seeing dragon slayer at a very young age so dragons are a favorite of mine although i have to admit i prefer
nice dragons to evil ones today's tale is what i like to refer to as pg-ish there is some fantasy violence but nothing graphic so it's suitable for most age groups with that being said make sure you're sitting comfortably and let's jump right on in dragon sight warlocks portals and destiny by natasha duncan drake alianara looked up when a scream disturbed her peaceful world she stood immediately holding herself over the eggs ready to attack any who came near but rather than a warrior or a thief
showing themselves a slight human appeared in her cave in mid-air above the side of the pool it was only a youngling she could tell that much no more than a clutch of summers and she knew a portal when she saw it as well she could not tell if it was male or female but it continued to scream as it fell going suddenly silent as it bounced off the sidewall and into the water there was a loud splash and then nothing for a short time until the youngling floated to the surface face down she looked dow
n at her eggs and then at the helpless clearly unconscious human and made her decision her eggs would be safe for a few moments lifting herself off her clutch she plodded to the water's edge and waded in for a short distance until she could reach out to the human the youngling seemed to weigh nothing as she plucked it from the water with a large claw she used her wings to lift herself back to dry land where she placed the human as gently as she could looking at it more closely she realized he wa
s a male there was blood around his mouth and his nose and he was not breathing it would have been clear the youngling was almost dead even if she had not been able to feel the fading spark of life it was sad but humans were such fragile creatures she would have to leave him outside for his own kind to find her main focus at the moment was her eggs and they would hatch soon she could not be distracted on impulse she reached out with her mind and touched the youngling's essence just to make sure
he was not suffering to her surprise something touched back it seemed this child was no ordinary child she could feel the tendrils of presence reaching out from him and touching others a certain knowledge formed in her heart as certain as when she had known that she would be the guardian of the eggs for her people's next generation this youngling was supposed to survive there was only one way open to her to save the precious life under her claw and she flooded the youngling with the essence of h
er people the child reared up under her outstretched hand muscles convulsing as she poured her magic into his form she could not direct it not for this it would heal as it saw fit and she gave all that she had to spare for her first duty was the eggs it was all she could do when she was done she sat back on her haunches and waited for a response from the small human he was silent and still for what to a human would have been an age but to alianara it was only a heartbeat eric opened his eyes slo
wly his thoughts were all jumbled and hazy and he had no idea where he was or how he had come to be there everything felt heavy and it was hard to convince his eyes not to close again he groaned as he did his best to move and discovered his muscles were stiff and sore nothing was making any sense and it didn't help that his eyes were sliding in and out of focus one second everything around him seemed very dark and the next he could see some sort of ceiling a long way above him it was so confusin
g that it was his sense of smell that managed to give him useful information first the air was damp and warm and carried a musky scent to his nose it wasn't unpleasant but it wasn't something he recognized there was also an undercurrent of something that made him think of the large fireplace his parents had at home that thought kick-started his brain home he had been riding his father's estates when someone had taken him off his horse with a fireball he sat up rapidly as he remembered the four b
lack-clad men who had surrounded him they had been chanting something he couldn't understand and then then the sky had disappeared and he'd been falling peace youngling said a calm and friendly voice you will do yourself a mischief he swung his head round towards the sound even though his eyes were in there can barely see anything faze he squinted the darkness however was impenetrable blinking he did his best to force his vision into something that might help then between one blink and the next
it was as if light flared around him eric found himself staring into big golden eyes and a large reptilian snout he couldn't help it he yelled and backpelled as fast as his misbehaving body would allow perhaps he should have looked where he was going at the same time at first there was stone under his hands but he was moving so fast that when one palm came down on something wet and a lot less solid he had no hope of stopping at all the world tilted he fell backwards and there was an almighty spl
osh his last thought as he went under was that at least the water wasn't freezing heart beating a mile a minute he bobbed to the surface a few seconds later spluttering the water was deep but luckily for him he had been able to swim since he was a small boy and treading water came naturally the cavern because he'd finally figured out that's what it was was filled with an irregular hissing sound of course his gaze zeroed in on the reason he had narrowly avoided drowning at which point he realized
where the hissing was coming from and what it meant there was an honest to goddess dragon watching him and laughing i would be most put out if you drown after all the trouble i have been to to prolong your existence the dragon said although she was still laughing eric also realized he wasn't hearing her with his ears or rather he was only the noise she was making audibly was totally unintelligible to him but her voice was also in his mind sorry popped out of his mouth automatically his mother w
ould have been proud of his manners she said sit back with me and i will dry you i seem to recall humans do not take well to being damp eric really had no idea what to say he considered staying in the water for a moment but then realized if the dragon wanted to pluck him out she would barely have to move to do it he had nothing to lose after all she was right with a couple of strokes he swam to the shore and pulled himself up pleased his eyes seemed to be continuing to cooperate no one had seen
a dragon in 300 years the history book said they had all been wiped out but eric knew what he was looking at she patted the ground next to her with one large clawed toe eric didn't feel overly confident with the situation but what else was he supposed to do so he went and sat down when she lifted up and opened her mouth he might possibly have sent up a silent prayer rather than being eaten however hot air blasted over him one book he had read said dragon breath was sulfurous and foul the book ha
d been wrong this dragon's breath was far better than most humans eric canoe and he could feel the edge of his hair curling as the heat dried them off thank you he said when the dragon finally drew back it had taken several minutes and he was still a little damp in places but most of him was dry you are welcome youngling eric he put in my name is eric i am honored to be granted your name the dragon said and dipped her head not the reaction eric had expected but it did stop him just blindly askin
g the dragon for her name it seemed to have some significance he did not understand now tell me how you ended up in my cavern the dragon set eric only hesitated for a heartbeat for some reason he trusted his very large companion after all she hadn't eaten him yet i was attacked he told her by warlocks they must have opened a portal but i don't know why they would bother with me my father is a lord but he does not have the king's ear and stays out of the politics of the realm and here i had hoped
humans would have grown out of the folly of dark magic by now humans never grow out of anything as it gives them power eric replied with the shake of his head the last king tried to ban the darker arts but then there was a war and the white witches wouldn't help him the dragon sighed a pity she said if you don't mind me asking eric decided to try his luck i thought there were no more dragons it only occurred to him after the words were out of his mouth that they might have been a painful subjec
t sorry he apologized immediately before she could reply ignore me i shouldn't have asked not at all youngling eric she replied i am the last of my generation but soon the next generation shall be born she lifted one of her great wings and eric was surprised to see the edge of a large pile of eggs she was brooding i will tell you a secret eric she said because i feel that you need to know when a dragon dies their essence is not lost it waits then when there is but one left they are called to be
the guardian of the next generation all those waiting essences become eggs ready to be born a and live a new life soon there will be a great hatching but no one has seen a dragon in over three centuries eric said the dragon turned ahead on one side as if considering what he had told her that would be about right she affirmed with a nod sometimes i forget how fleeting your lives are for dragons a generation may be ten thousand years three hundred is not a long time to give to the care of the youn
g eric could not really comprehend ten thousand years and what happens to you when they hatch he asked i will remain until they are grown she told him i will teach them and to guide them one day when i am ready i will allow my essence to leave this old body and i will be born a new with the next clutch that doesn't sound very fair you do all the work but don't get a new life this time the dragon laughed this time a much lighter sound you dear child she said don't worry for me i have had the joy
of hearing the eggs sing as the new lives are formed and i shall have the joy of hearing all the new voices as they come into the world this is a great gift and i do not intend to release myself from this life the moment they are grown unless i am very bored that is that made it a little better then again who was eric to judge another species life choices to distract himself from his thoughts he looked around the cavern was huge however eventually he came to one simple conclusion there didn't ap
pear to be any entrances which begged one obvious question where's the light coming from he asked there is no light he turned back to his companion at that but i can see that my dear eric is dragon vision i'm not a dragon no but you resonate with dragon power eric looked down at himself i don't understand dragons can see as humans do but it is not all we see we can see the energy with anything the dragon explained it allows us to see with the absence of light no doubt your mind will translate th
is into something you can understand that probably explained why things looked a little weird but left out so much but how can i have dragon power he asked i used it to heal you his companion said it will also have changed you but you were about to leave this plane of existence and i could not allow that to happen why eric asked the loudest of the questions in his head but it was by no means the only one i sense greatness in you youngling it is probably why the warlocks attacked you no doubt som
eone else has seen what i have seen and deemed you dangerous to them it is also likely why you arrived here and not wherever they intended to send you the universe does not like to be thwarted i'm not great eric protested not yet was all his new friend said to that i'm not even a little bit special he added ah now that is where you are very wrong eric i have known many humans in my life and you are one of those who is most special how it wasn't like it was easy to tell a dragon they were complet
ely wrong he really hoped this didn't mean she would eat him after all when she realized she had been duped that i do not know although not many humans communicate well with mine kind she told him when i first touched your mind you reached back to me of your own will the changes my power will have made to you will be aiding or speaking now but not then i also sense that you have already made connections to others in your world as well not active as yet but there nevertheless i cannot say why eri
c rubbed his forehead as he did his best to make sense of what the dragon was telling him it sounded so completely wrong in any capacity to do with him his tutors said he was bright but he wasn't very good at sword work or fighting and the only reason he wasn't a complete embarrassment to his father was he had an older brother who was very good at all nightly pursuits the only thing he had going for him in that line at all was he could ride any horse even the problematic ones that most others co
uldn't get near he'd always been good with animals but why me that you will have to find out by yourself youngling the dragon said i cannot divine the future he'd really hoped she would have had more than that being told he was special didn't help much if he didn't know why closing his eyes he took a deeper breath to center himself he didn't feel any different at least he didn't think so for a while he sat there just thinking however when he finally quieted his mind a technique his tutors had as
sured him was very important for commanders going into battle he noticed something he had so far missed very quietly so low that he hadn't remotely noticed it before there was music it wasn't a tune like the minstrels and bards played past the winter evenings but it was definitely music are you humming he asked because it was easier than dealing with everything else at the moment after that his new friend sat up and back looking down at him what do you hear yangling she asked eric hesitated some
thing in her tone put him on edge music he said but different and very faint there's no pattern but there is purpose like distant bells carried on the wind he nodded at her question now i am sure of my decision she said hunkering down again so her huge head was only a short distance from his own what is it he had to ask dragon song she said i told you i have heard the voices of the new lives as they form now so do you my children are a chorus in my mind but i believe you may be hearing just one
because of the magic you used to heal me many humans have been healed by dragon power in history eric she told him none have ever heard dragon song maybe because they weren't born at the right time he suggested a dragon's soul never stops singing while they live other dragons may hear it if allowed it is a precious gift between my kind only when i no longer hear the song will i know all of my charges are ready to be on their own in the world that one of my brood reaches out to you even now makes
me believe times are coming when dragons and humans must once again know each other none of the history books mention anything like that eric said it is not often such events occur eric she said dragons do not interfere in the lives of humans on mere whim she hunkered down further so they were nose-to-nose well-met eric she said my name is alianara firetang of the black cliffs i am pleased to make your acquaintance let this be the beginning of a long and happy friendship something inside of eri
c shivered the back of his mind was shouting i made friends with the dragon very loudly but it was more than that it was as if something important had just fallen into place thank you he said uh me too it was a very pathetic speech but at least it felt right you must be here when the eggs hatch alianara decided sitting back again and settling like a hen on her nest only then will we know which of my brood has chosen to sing to you it will be very soon very soon yes no more than a year two at mos
t only then did eric realize quite how different time was for a dragon alianara he said i'm sorry but i can't stay here for two years my family will think i'm dead that might seem very soon to you for me very soon would mean in a few hours or maybe tomorrow those big gold eyes blinked at him i would feed you alianara said the people of the deep bring me fish regularly eric glanced at the pool thank you but what would i do for two years listen to the song i don't mean any offense he said carefull
y but i need more than that really really he promised and i can't just let my family think the warlocks succeeded alianara tilted ahead as if considering him then i shall send you home she said as if that would be the easiest thing in the world when the song reaches its crescendo you will return there was no question about it each statement was produced as fact and eric felt control of his life moving out of his grasp do not look so worried youngling alianara said and he was pretty sure she was
smiling at him you will be ready when the time comes time for what that you will have to find out for yourself eric but the universe has a way with these things are you sure oh yes she assured him he decided to hang on to her certainty since he had none of his own but i'm not special he insisted oh but youngling you are now i shall return you to the place where the original portal opened she said keep safe and i will see you very soon eric didn't even have time to say goodbye as cavern vanished
and his father's lands appeared it was coming on tonight and he was alone at least with his new vision he could see what was around him he could even see the outline of his horse sheltering beyond the tree line of a nearby cops of trees in the back of his mind he could still hear the distant music it was the only thing that made what had happened seem real when you wished to return alianara's voice filtered into his mind call eric didn't know what to reply shaking his head he walked towards his
horse he should have been home hours ago he needed to get back his mother would be worried and his father needed to know there were rogue warlocks on his land the future would have to wait he'd deal with it when it arrived alianara settled back down on her eggs it had been an exciting few hours how fast things with humans came and went only as she let her mind settle to the song of her clutch did it occur to her that maybe she should have mentioned to eric that with dragon sight came dragon eyes
