well tomorrow is Earth Day so our Science Guy Steve Spangler is here now to show us a little bit about recycling hey look at this I was thinking about this it's the little sticks that are here like if you need to keep them in the bag because a lot of people do here's what you do you just put them down into the bag like this don't worry about it yeah it just makes sense yeah so don't worry about it these little sticks they just go away just go away I can take all this magic and they just go into
the bag over and over and over go ahead you can try to you're like Mary Poppins when I do this there's just stuff everywhere and I was like vacuuming for days you know that they don't but here's here's water so if I put this down it doesn't they don't dissolve so you can't make it dissolve so how in the world do the sticks just continue to stop looking yeah it just keeps going I was like maybe he won't notice everything on the table plus all of this plus this entire bag sitting right here that'l
l all fit in the bag look at this it's right there all disappears this what did you do acetone so I'm using acetone right here and this ladies and gentlemen is something called polystyrene a trade named styrofoam but Watch What Happens go ahead you can try yours as well so there sticks for you as well and there's sticks for you as well you can do it watch this when it goes down inside look at this oh touch it and then it just disappears look at that so it's bubbling pretty well oh wow there you
go not hot of course you're destroying the polystyrene you're breaking it down what a great example of reduced recycle reuse you cannot recycle polystyrene right here it's here for good we can reduce and reuse but look at that it'll disappear and these peanuts are here try the cup just drop the cup down in there fine now for just a second now lift it up and watch what happens the Bottom's gone wow why is this so cathartic that's incredibly fun but look at this so now what a great example like al
l of those will fit into there all of those wow here's a great example of we gotta stop in this stuff and the stuff that's here reuse it reduce recycle reuse right we reuse this let's stop making it what do you want in its place well we don't want this right and a lot of people are like well aren't you uh aren't you just uh recycling you're not at all we're just simply destroying it this is effective for packaging because there's lots of air in here lots of little pockets of carbon dioxide or wh
atever so instead of using that and I'm breaking it down with acetone of course I've Got to Now dispose of all of this which makes it for a harder thing this is what we're going to do instead look at this now instead of polystyrene how about cornstarch feel those just cornstarch peanuts so when Amazon comes to the door yeah this is yeah I'm not telling you to do this oh these are completely biodegradable wow those are not good I can't imagine do you need like a dipping so now this down in water
now look this goes down in one water these will now oh look at this these will now break down in just wow so that's what we want in a landfill you want those to disappear we don't want anything like this these are toxic chemicals yeah so we don't we want to get rid of the polystyrene we want to substitute something like this cornstarch I feel like I'm full now I mean you know you're good these are the kinds of demonstrations we do this kind of thing why because we want kids uh forever and now th
ey won't disappear in the acetone oh yeah just in water so now this goes in just water and that will here if I just do it this way like this watch this we can just make all of this disappear wow now these are the visual kinds of things as we're talking about Earth Day we need Solutions yeah so we want kids to look at this kind of stuff I want them to look at polystyrene that if forever and just go you know what whatever we have let's reuse that yeah so you put it in the bag you reuse it you send
it but let's stop buying the stuff right right stop doing this because you see I mean when you take a look at that disappear in here yeah I mean you never forget that image of look at that it just disappears look at that it's just it's amazing it just disappears so we stopped using that we reduce recycle we use we're going to reuse uh this is what we have but we're going to find some Alternatives like the packing material that'll be fast fascinating yeah we're not going to eat it we're not goin
g to eat it no we're good okay thanks for coming in my friend why am I always a mess and you go back and do them [Laughter] we'll be right back
