hello everyone and welcome back to 3Dvarius I'm
Eduardo Bortolotti and today we're diving into a topic that often Sparks debate among violinist acoustic
versus electric which is better well I will rather talk about why violinists or in general stram
players should also consider adding an electric instrument to their collection well violin
playing is much about versatility as it is about tradition while acoustic violin called in a
special place in or hearts of many musicians while electric v
iolins offer a range of advantages
that can complement and enhance your playing experience in ways that maybe you might have not
considered yet let's see some reasons why I think that string players should consider adding an
electric instrument to their arsenal reason number one enhance sound projection in general
electric violins are equipped with pickups and other electronic components that allow for easy
amplification in the past instruments were crafted with carefully selected woods and
meticulous
craftsmanship to optimize the acoustic properties of the body of the resonant body and there
was no technology available for amplification however the emergence of electric instruments has
fundamentally transformed the way we think about sound projection in performance settings unlike
acoustic violins which depend on the Resonance of their Hollow Bodies to project Sound electric
violins utilize pickups and electric components to amplifier the sound this means that regardless
of
the venue size or acoustic challenges electric violin can produce a consistent sound level that
reaches for every corner of the room additionally while acoustic instruments can be Amplified
using external microphones or even pickups many violinists are hesitant to modify or expose their
precious instruments to the rigor of Amplified performance so in many cases a lot of violence
that I know they are not happy about putting this kind of things or gadgets on the instrument
so in here I would
just give another point to the electric violin because you know you just come
Plug and Play whether you're performing in an inate venue or cafe or in a big concert hall or
arena with an electric violin you don't need to worry about the projection of the instrument
because you would have amplification and you can go as loud as you want which takes me to the
reason number two the reduced feedback issues the louder the trickier feedback has long been a
concerned for violinists performing with
Amplified acoustic instruments especially if you're using
microphones particularly in high volume settings where the risk of interference is heightened
even with the use of pickup systems and well the inherent Resonance of the acoustic violins can
often lead to feedback issues creating challenges for performers and Engineers alike the complex
interaction between the instruments resonance body amplification equipment and environmental
factors can make feedback difficult to predict and contr
ol in crowded venues or near loudspeakers
acoustic violins are susceptible to unwanted resonance and oscillation resulting in disrupted
feedback and that can detract from the performance experience so this means that electric violinists
can stand wherever they want on the scene they can be closer to the amplification equipment
like floor monitors or PA systems without the fear of feedback this enhance resistance to
feedback ensures that musicians can focus on their plane without being distr
acted by technique
issues or noises and here I want to add a comment that is maybe not about feedback but if you're
are a live looping violinist well the idea of playing with microphone on acoustic violin is
terrible because I've done that in the past and the problem is that the microphone will get the
noise or the sound of your floor monitors or PA system or whatever and that will bring the first
Loop to the second Loop and in general it will make mess on your looping so in that case I wou
ld
just recommend to have an electric instrument and you can forget about bringing noise to the loop
or to the live looping session and talking about effects or looping this takes me to the reason
number three better control over sound effects electric violin can provide you with better
control or greater control over the sound that you're looking for or you want to get uh as
mentioned mention before the resonance body of an acoustic instrument makes it harder to work
in certain situations
this monitor under your ear makes it more difficult to get to the desire
zone that you are looking for you want to reach and provide to your audience I've heard many times
musicians that were sure that their Bing was loud enough and it was the opposite especially if you
don't have a sound engineer in the front helping with the sound so many times if you working with
Distortion in example many times you will see that you need even more Distortion because you
cannot hear it because you have
the clean sound of the instrument and then it it brings up a mess
in the front they might hear a lot of distortion not a single note of what you're playing while
here you can hear everything clean because you have the dry signal of the acoustic and the
all the wet is going there and the public might not understand what you're playing so with
electric violing adjusting par parameters such as riverb delay EQ and as mentioned especially
Distortion or other modulation effects is much easier ele
ctric instruments offer endless
possibilities for Sonic experimentation and customization silent practice options maybe sounds
obvious or maybe it's a simple reason but very practical electric violin offer the venience of
Silent practice making it an ideal option for late night practicing especially if you live in
small apartments or in general if you have kids it's ideal for night practicing but maybe you're
a touring musician and you spent a lot of time in hotel rooms or even waiting at t
he airports
reason number five a lot of models and colors while acoustic instruments defer just a little
bit between construction style or a little bit the color or the varnish the electric violin come
in a wide array of models and colors offer a level of customization that traditional acoustic violins
can cannot provide whether you prefer a sleek and modern design or a more traditional aesthetic
there's an electric violin out there to switch your personal style and preferences additionally
if you get your instrument from Trin varus we have some customization options allowing you to tailor
your instrument to reflect your unique identity as a musician this customization not only adds
a touch of individuality to your performance but also allows you to find a design that truly
feels like an extension of your personality and last reason enhanced comfort in extended
range instruments and let me clarify what I'm saying here if you have played a five string
acoustic instrument or a
six string instrument that already exist somewhere there well maybe
you have noticed or you have heard that is not the same and it's not more difficult because you
have more strings you can get used to them but the thing is that the body of the instrument in many
cases will interfere with you both so in my case I have some acoustic five string violins and in many
situations while you are playing and you get you know you're doing your thing many times you're not
wondering that you have less
space or something because you are used to play with the whole bow in
many occasions and situations I have hit the body of the instrument with the frop of my bow so it
makes some damage to the instrument and then you don't feel very comfortable with playing because
then you are start thinking about not hitting your instrument instead of just focusing on your
playing an electric violin with extended range in this case Six Strings but you may have even seven
strings you don't need to worry a
bout getting too high or too low because there's nobody which will
interfere on your playe so I can go to my lower strings or I can go to my higher [Music]
strings without the fear of hating or string with my bow so if you want to play or explore
the boundaries of extended range instruments I do recommend getting an electric violin because
then you want some worry about the body of the instrument and that's also for violas or for
cellos that you can get strings and it's easier to play in th
ose instruments conclusions
so as you can see there is plenty of reasons to get an electric instrument it's not only about
amplifying the instrument is about the whole experience of playing with Amplified instrument
with an electric solution that in many case will also enhance and amplify your way of playing
so whether you are a classical virtuoso a jazz or rock enthusias or you are exploring
the world of contemporary music having an electric instrument in your collection opens
up our work
of possibilities for expression and creativity okay now that we have explored that
advantages of electric instruments or electric violins it's time to hear from you what are your
thoughts on the benefits of Amplified performance settings on both instruments do you believe
that electric violins offer a more practical solution to the challenges faced by an acoustic
instrument in live performances or is it just the same for you additionally would love to
hear your perspective on the coexisten
ce of acoustic and electric instruments in the modern
music landscape do you think it's relevant to maintain an acoustic instrument alongside an
electric one maybe you are more into electric music electronical or any other style that doesn't
require an an acoustic instrument so what's your opinion about that and let's not forget about
our other fellow musicians do you think that other instrumentalist like guitarist face similar
dilemas when it comes to choosing between acoustic and Electric
instruments leave me your opinions
