well it is the oldest historic House in Nashville and you can learn all about its Rich history while having fun too Travelers Rest historic House museum is truly a gem we are here today with Katie and Chad thanks for joining us thanks for okay they are really trying to educate people on 1,000 years of history when they come to visit that's pretty cool it's the oldest house that you can visit in Nashville that's right yeah we are the oldest historic House museum open of the public in Nashville an
d we're really close to downtown we're 6 miles south of Franklin Pike a thousand years of History close to it so nearly uh we actually had some radiocarbon dating done that showed that the site could have been occupied right around 1,200 wow okay so you brought some really cool items we're all about history here on local onto what are these items so um these two items are both from the Mississippian period belonging to the Native American group that lived uh at Travelers Rest 6 to 800 years ago
uh we have a ceramic pot that was used for storage and we also have a uh Flint napped projectile point that would have been used for hunting wow okay and what I love about this is finding these items instruments it's you can learn so much more about our history anything that you guys have found that's kind of just shocking uh I think um we actually were able to find a piece of uh burnt wood in a fire Hearth that was found on site so we were able to get a radiocarbon date which gave us our 6 to 8
00 year range instead of just kind of guessing based on the style of artifacts we found and I want to say that you did that survey last year corre how was that even done yeah so we did a ground penetrating radar survey so no invasive digging um it really is a good best practice on how you can do things with the technology that we have nowadays so um we hired professionals and they gritted out the property and the laser penetrated and let us know where artifacts could potentially be both prehisto
ric and historic so it helps us make informed decisions about the property and I love that you make it a point to say um that to understand one another better through open dialogue is very very important because we're going through historic events here and not everything is bright and shiny and rainbows and sunshine yeah we try to address a wide range of topics with the information that we have so we're really fortunate and in a really unique position having this nearly thousand years of history
that we're able to talk about everything from the prehistoric Native Americans that would have been here through Judge John Overton in his time and his descendants and information about the people that would have been enslaved on the property as well and really into the current modern-day historic preservation movement cuz look at these photos I mean wow it's pretty impressive now you guys also have some fun upcoming events as well we do um I I want to start by talking about our upcoming songwr
iters night so it's our third annual iteration of this program again we have our lead SP sponsor Pinnacle Financial Partners um and this year we're also including a giveaway uh we're going to do through Gibson gives where we're going to raffle off an acoustic guitar um it's valued at $1,800 but I think the most exciting thing is just to be able to feature these amazing songwriters on the property um it's rain or shine so we'll keep our fingers crossed for good weather but we have a great event s
pace that we can move it into as well um and we'd love to see everyone it's Thursday it's right around the corner um it should be great 5: to 8 p.m. um the songwriters will St take the stage at 6 and we have yogis Pizza people are welcome to bring their own food and a picnic it's always a lot of fun so we're really excited about that one we love celebrating our songwriters and the Spooky season yes uh Twisted Tennessee two sides to every Tale on Saturday October 28th uh from 6:00 to 10: we take
uh some the more mysterious deaths in Tennessee History you get to hear from both sides come to our barn which is set up as a Tavern and you get to vote on which side you think was uh right and we let you know how history voted as well oh so cool and you guys brought some really cool books as well it's awesome I mean you can see all of this down at the uh Travelers Travelers Rest it's it's such a great great place to just understand our history how we came to be thank you so much for joining us
