ter 6 on page 101. then once you found Deuteronomy chapter six if you're able to I'll invite you to stand with me all the honor of the reading of God's word and we will be reading once again the first 15 verses of this text in Deuteronomy chapter 6 beginning in verse 4 and Moses is speaking and he says now these are the Commandments the statutes and the judgments which the Lord your God commanded to teach you that you might do them in the land whether you go to possess it that I might appear the
Lord thy God to keep all the statutes in his Commandments which I command thee thou a nice son and thy son's son all the days of thy life and that thy days may be prolonged here therefore all Israel and observe to do it then it may be well with thee that you may increase mightily as the Lord God of thy fathers has promised me in the land of floweth with milk and honey verse 4 hear o Israel the Lord our God is one Lord and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart with all thy soul wit
h all thy might and these words which I command thee this day shall be in thine heart and thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children and shall talk of them and I'll set us down in that house when they'll walk Us by the way when I when I lie us down and when they'll rise and stuff now she'll buy them for a sign upon thine hand and they shall be his promise between thine eyes and I shall write them upon the post of thy house and on thy Gates and it shall be when the Lord thy God shall have
brought thee into the land which he swear unto thy fathers to Abraham the Isaac and the Jacob to give thee great and godly sin beats which I'll build it not and houses full of all good things which shall filled not and Wells did Michelle did not Vineyards and Owl trees were shall planted not but Thou shalt have eaten and be full then beware lest thou forget the Lord which brought me forth out of the land of Egypt from the house of bondage Thou shalt fear the lord thy God and serve him and shall
swear by his name he shall not go after other gods if the gods of the people but surround about you for the Lord thy God is a jealous God among you bless the anger of the Lord thy God be killed against thee and Destroy thee from off the face of the Earth our heavenly father we come to you now just creating the song that we just sang father we come to you hungry we come to you needing your help and seeking your face and father we ask you to reveal to us the truths and the teachings from your wor
ds that you want us to hear and follow more closely today Lord as we look at this familiar passage of scripture as we touch on some very familiar verses within it I read you'll help us to see it with fresh eyes help us to experience your word helps the experience your Holy Spirit giving us the sermon and guiding us as we work through it and walk through your work today in brand new ways now that as always nobody needs to hear from me but we all need to hear them so father I ask you to speak to m
e ask you to speak really have me always say that what you would have me to say and keep me back and saying anything that would be in my own will it's our prayer that if there's anyone here today anyone listening online that has not put their faith in Jesus Christ God will be prayed and today will be the day of their salvation we pray that you will speak them through the word as we focus our thoughts on what it means to be part of a family here on Earth uh show them their needs to be part of you
r faith reveal is underneath for salvation help us all to walk closer to you as a result of us being in your house to create all these things perfect precious powerful Jesus we were in this text last week as well and we began last week by seeing The Importance of Being intentional in our pursuit of growing strong Christian families we saw that strong Christian families don't just happen automatically we see that in verse 1 that it's important for us to check our priorities and make sure that the
reasons we do what we do and the reasons why we make the decisions that we make aren't just based on our own personal convictions or our own personal preferences but we're based in that based on what God says is important and what his word demands that has to be the priority God has from the priority not me not Mom not dad not Grandpa not Grandma God has to be the ultimate Authority in the ultimate priority but in the home and then the universe one we see the goal that we need to be focused on
now we saw this last week my kids won't always be under my room they will always answer to my authority so I had to parent them now for the day in mind and that goal in mind of having them continue to walk with the Lord when I'm no longer the one leaving them anniversary we saw the reason why his parents we have to be willing to step up and to step into the role and the responsibility that God gives us our leading our families and it's because of the hope that we've seen mentioned in verse three
we want and we desire and we hope for our family to be blessed by God in all the ways that he wants them to be Moses tells the nation Israel I don't want you to miss out on any of the blessings I don't want you to miss out on any of the promises that God has you that's why I'm leading you this way it's not because I'm on a power trip I just want to get in my way he says no I'm teaching you the things that God instructed me to pass on to you so we need to lead them with the hope of God being ble
ssed by God and as we look back at this this text once again today we're going to see four key things that our kids need to experience from us and as parents and grandparents if we want to grow and build strong Christian families we're going to see four key thoughts that are important for us as adults to keep in mind as we raise and lead the kids that God has given us and the first key word that I want us to see is that our children need to hear to you have to follow along or take notes but the
first keyword that we need to see today is that our children need to hear now look at verse three we read here therefore o Israel now Moses is speaking to a very specific group of people God had called him to lead the nation of Israel and those of us who are parents and grandparents God has also called us to lead a very specific group of people our kids and grandkids and notice this we can't lean our children to a closer relationship with God if they don't hear us talk about them we can't lead o
ur kids to a closer relationship with God if they don't hear us talk about that now there's something important for us to remember those of us who are parents we probably know this to be true but we need to remind ourselves of this it's just because you said something doesn't mean your kid's hurting just because you said something doesn't mean they heard it and let's be honest even if they did hear it it doesn't mean they're gonna do what you told them to do but notice here before Moses instruct
s the people that he's been called to lead before he calls him to do anything before he gives him any of the rules of The Commandments that God has told him to share with the nation of Israel notice he starts by making sure that he has her attention and this is important for us as parents to recognize we have to know whether or not our kids are paying attention to us we have to know whether or not our kids respect us we have to know whether or not we are the authority in our homes or whether our
kids will look at us nod their head and roll their eyes when we walk away we have to know whether or not we are in charge of our home and leading our home the way God has called us to or else guess what our kids aren't going to hear anything we have to say if we don't step up and into the leadership responsibility not because we feel like on the dead here you're going to listen to me or I'm the mom I'm in charge but if we don't step up into the god-given and god-ordained role to be the adult in
the house to be the opportunity in the house our kids are not going to hear anything we say and they might they might act a certain way of living in our homes but those seeds of rebellion will grow into weeds but it becoming teenagers and adults and they will walk away and we'll sit and I think well I talk about God all the time you never had the respect to begin with I took them to church every Sunday doesn't mean they actually respected I did everything that I did that I knew to do did you ha
ve their attention first now kids are born with a name desire to want to please their parents the Bible says that the glory of children when they're little kids want to please their parents take this those are your kids that have grown up I remember those days when working as soon as you you come to the door those Little Footsteps come running up to you Daddy Mommy I missed you yeah how's that working when they're 17 and 18. when you go over and visit your grown children do they walk through tho
se I've been waiting for you it doesn't happen anymore now it might never happen as I get older because we kind of grow out of demonstrating our love and commitment in that way but here's the thing it goes back to what we see here if we don't have our kids attention and respect they're not in your ending the episode so look back to our text this is important when Moses called the nation of Israel to attention when he cried out to them in verses three and four notice it wasn't for him to Reign an
d Rave about his own personal preferences his own standards or his own convictions no no he wanted to get their attention but he wanted to get their attention because he wanted them to hear one really specific message God gave Moses a specific message for a specific group of people and look what the message was look what Moses was so focused on making sure that they heard look at the lesson that Moses prioritized Above All Else he said hear o Israel got their attention and what's he say once and
once he had their attention once he knew they were listening this was the message he gave them the Lord our God is one Lord and as parents and grandparents there is no other message that is more important for our kids to hear from us than that Jesus Christ is the Lord there is no other message more important that we make sure we have our kids attention to teach them and tell them that Jesus Christ is Lord and Moses here I believe he captures the heart of all of us who are parents and grandparen
ts when he says the Lord Our God Amen is one Lord think about that for a minute look back there at the end of verse 4. and think of how great it would be for us to be able to speak to our kids about God and use that toround that Moses uses where he uses the owl out yeah where Moses able to say confidently he's not just my God but since you put your faith in him and you're following him he's your God so he's our God think about that think about that as a friend wouldn't it be awesome wouldn't it
be amazing wouldn't it be a blessing if you could speak to your kids and grandkids not just about my God or your God but the power God but to in order to be able to speak to our children in this way we have to understand something being honest it would be amazing if I could speak to my kids and my grandkids and my family not just about what I believe but about what they believed to notice about my faith about therapy not just about my God but about our God but how do we get there how can we get
to the point of point us to God of to to our children about our God how can we get the point where we can speak to our grandchildren and have conversations about the goodness and greatness and mercy and salvation of our god well notice us first they need to hear us talk about that if we as parents and grandparents don't talk about that guess what our kids aren't going to hear about them sure amen if we don't talk about God our kids won't care about God if we don't focus on him our kids won't foc
us on him right if God isn't the priority in our lives he's not going to be the priority in their lives if our kids hear us talk about sports they'll grow welcome and say oh that's our team if they hear us talk about politics they'll say oh that's our political party they'll grow up and they'll say well when we talk about trucks or Vehicles they'll say oh that's our brand that's our company but if we don't talk about God one day they'll grow up and the conversations won't be about our God the co
nversation will be that oh Dad that's your God that's what you believe the credit for gram of that that's okay for you but that's your God that's your faith that's not our God and I don't know about you but I don't just want my kids to grow up and say oh the Orioles that's our team amen this type of President oh that's our president you know this truck this this Dodge or this Chevy or this Toyota or therefore that's our brand I want my kids to grow up and say that God is Not Just dad's God he's
not just my mom's God he's not just grandpa or Grandpa's God that's my God he's our God too but if our kids don't hear us talking about God our kids aren't gonna hear about God they will never identify themselves by the relationship with God the way that we want them to if we're not talking about in the way we should so the question we have to ask ourselves is how often do my children hear me speaking about them because guess what Jesus said in Matthew chapter 12 34 that ought to be a bunch of a
partments [Music] and if our kids don't hear us talking about God then the natural conclusion that they come to is that God really isn't all that important about them and out of all the messages that we share with our kids out of all the lessons that we want them to learn from us out of everything that we prioritize if we were to ask our kids what do you hear Mom and Dad talk about the most what do Mom and Dad talk to you about what is the biggest focus and priority that they have that they want
you to learn because we see here verses three and four that our goal as parents should be for our kids to say the one thing that Mom and Dad want the one thing that Grandpa and Grandma really want the one thing they really want me to know is that Jesus Christ is Lord and that doesn't mean that we don't talk to them about school or sports or their Hobbies with our friends it just means that in our home if our kids are going to hear about God as it start with us talking about him to them so we se
e first our kids need to hear us talking about the Lord and next we see they need to see us living for God they need to see us living for him look back at verse three where we read hear o Israel and observe now is it important for us for our kids to hear us talking about God yes but is talking about God enough to build strong Christian homes no is talking about God enough to convince them that God is important enough and worthy enough for them to give their lives to and completely follow him tal
king about that God is Not Enough James said in James chapter 1 verse 22 biggie doers of the word not hearers only the saving your own selves it's not enough for our kids to hear us talk about God they need to see us actually living for him it's not enough for our kids to hear us talk about God they need to see us in observe us actually living for him in verse 3 Moses calls the nation of Israel to hear and observe it's not enough to talk the talk we have to walk the walk it's not enough for us t
o teach our kids about God it's not enough for us to talk to them about God it's not enough for us to take our kids to church it's not enough to take them to VBS it's not enough to sign them up for Day Camp it's not enough to post scripture verses out of walls of our homes it's not to bring in the Sunday School it's not enough to just bring them to Awana clubs it's not enough for them to hear us talk about God they need to observe us actually living for him James said that being hearers of the w
ord of God without being doers of it leads to people being deceived he said be doers of the word not hearers only and if our kids only hear us talk about God if they only hear us talk about the Bible but they don't actually see us doing anything for the Lord guess what happens we think we've done our job just by making sure that we're hearing God's word but we're not letting it out and as a result we've deceived ourselves into thinking that we've done what God's command us we say well I think my
kid's a church well great I'm glad you bring your kids my kids are inside my kids come to church on Sunday night great my kids come to church on Wednesday praise God but no amount of talking about God can cover after the deficiency of them not seeing you actually do anything when we talk about God though they our kids don't see us living for him when that happens when we as parents put all of our folks on making sure our kids hear about God and we don't focus enough on them actually seeing us l
ive sold out lives for God we deceive ourselves in thinking that we're doing everything that God's commanded us to those parents and we have them we've literally done the absolute bearment say well I took my kid to church this morning I'll bring them back tonight we'll be back in church on Wednesday I'll I'll tell them what I read during my Bible time tomorrow I'll pray with them on Tuesday they're going to hear me talk about God a lot during this week but are they actually going to see you do a
nd bring your friend this week do they see you actually doing anything that sends the message to them that dad's really serious about this mom's really serious about this are really serious about that well how do you know they don't just talk about them I see them actually live in the last one so for those of you that are parents if someone were to ask your kids how often do Mom and Dad talk about them how often do they talk to you about the Bible he said How about if someone asks them have you
ever seen Mom or Dad share the gospel your team mom and dad do anything that goes beyond just talking about God it sends a message that they're actually serious about me have you observed mom and dad doing something that demonstrates that God isn't just something they talk about he's someone that actually committed to living when our kids look at our lives are they able to go hear and observe in God's most important as parents and grandparents our kids didn't need to hear us and see us talking a
bout and living for the Lord and what we see next is that we need to teach them here see and teach in verse 7 says Thou shalt teach them and grandparents as adults entrusted by God to raise children up in a nurture in the admonition of the Lord those that are trusted to raise children for his glory and his honor the Bible lays out exactly what we need to teach them and how we need to teach them here in this text and what we need to teach them is to love the Lord look at verse 5. and verse 4 when
Moses calls the nation of Israel to attention when he calls him to gather around and to come close and to listen to this message he says Hear o Israel the Lord our God is one Lord notice that sentence doesn't end there it's not a complete thought that's not the entire message there's a semicolon there that connects verse 4 to verse 5. and when we read them together in context as it's intended it reads hear of Israel the Lord our God is one Lord and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy
heart all thy soul and with all thy might the message that Moses emphasized the lesson that he attempted to teach them wasn't come to church on Sunday it wasn't to read their Bible it wasn't which version of the bible to read it was this love God with all your heart all your soul and all your strength and that's what we need to teach our kids that's the message we need to teach our kids love God totally love God completely love him fully love God thoroughly love God entirely look in Unconditiona
lly Love God holy love him wholeheartedly and how can we teach our kids to love God in this way how can we teach our kids to love God the way he commands us to teach them to love very simply they have to see us do it Jesus said in John chapter 5 verse 19 that whatsoever things you see at the father do the son to the blood ones and Jesus was talking about how he followed his heavenly father and that teaching is important for us too our kids are going to learn from what we do [Music] and if we wan
t to teach them to love God with all their heart all their soul and all their strength guess what they have to see us do it for us keep the place here in Deuteronomy chapter 6. I'll be coming just a minute come back in just a minute and turn over to the book of Isaiah now we won't be here long but there's a thought here that's one of my favorite phrases in the Bible it's become a prayer that I pray often if I Isaiah chapter 6 and in Isaiah chapter 6 in the first five verses we read about Isaiah'
s encounter when he experienced the presence of God and when he experienced the greatness of God in verse 5 he said I am undone when Isaiah came into the presence of God he let go of everything he became untied and Unbound he became unfast and he became unbuttoned he says he became undone and let me ask you have your kids ever seen you come undone before the Lord even if they had this how do we ever expect them to love God the idea that we can love God with all of our heart all of our soul and a
ll of our strength without becoming undone it doesn't make sense it's not practical it's not logical guess what it's not even biblical to come undone means to let go of everything that keeps me from loving God and worshiping him in the way that I should to come on that means to love God with all my heart all my soul all my strength with no concern for what anybody else thinks about it and God described David as being a man after God's Own Heart and in second chamber chapter 6 verse 14 we read ab
out David becoming undone before the Lord tell us that David danced mightily before the Lord is God and if you know that story we won't turn their time and say but you know that story when David became undone before the Lord it upsets the people some of the religious folks were mad at David for doing that even some people in his own family his own wife was upset of David said Dave you ought to be ashamed of yourself when the reality is that we should be ashamed of not coming under the board but
the reality is we have a hard time coming undone we like to be in control we like to appear like we have it all together we don't want to do anything that causes people to think that we're one of those there are lots of reasons why we don't come undone before the Lord whether it's not feeling comfortable letting myself being completely open and vulnerable before God whether it's worrying about what other people might think of me if I do but look back at our attention Isaiah chapter 6 verse 5. th
e beginning of the verse Isaiah said woe is me for I am undone now let's look at the reason why he became undone look at the end of the verse like I said because mine eyes had seen the king the Lord of hosts so let me ask you have your eyes seen the king not your physical eyes but has your heart been opened by a relationship with Jesus Christ [Music] have you experienced him have you asked Psalm chapter 34 Verse 8 says have you personally tasted and seen that the Lord is good that we should be w
illing to come undone before the Lord in our worship and praise God and listen I know we're Baptists we don't dance mightily before the Lord we rarely even tap our toes if anyone claps their hands someone's liable to have a heart attack someone got the screaming and shouting we don't know what would happen but I know something someone would get mad someone get upset about it if someone got just so excited about God they couldn't contain themselves that would have said something even though we se
e biblically today that it was made after God's Own Heart and he became undone before the war when Isaiah was a prophet the Lord and he came undone from the Lord the layman in Acts chapter 3 verse 8 when he was healed he didn't just say oh amen thank you Jesus it says he came walking and leaping and praising God let me ask you when's the last time you saw somebody leap in church say something run through church that's the last time we seen anybody showing any emotion that we give any indication
that we love God for what he's done for us why is it because we don't come undone I eat a knot in my head a couple times the Holy Spirit really moved I whispered amen and as a result we wonder why our kids don't love the Lord with all their hearts when reality is we don't look out loud no you can't love God with all your heart without that affecting your emotions you can't love God with all your strength without that affecting your emotions and our kids will never learn to love the Lord with all
their heart all their mind and all this right but they don't see Mom and Dad or grandpa grandpa doing is Mom and Dad and Grandpa Grandma sit in the Pew open the Bible get up and leave what's done that's what's going to happen we're going to raise next generation of kids they're going to grow up through this church not change anything and not do anything and walk back out and never learn how to love the god even that's the one command we've been given above all else to parents [Music] we need to
praise God more than what we do yeah or our kids are never going to do it and again I know we're Baptists now but we do we dress up we sit quietly but can I be honest this isn't about this thing this isn't a denomination I think this is a child of God saved by grace saved by faith not of words this is a once Bound for heaven but not once done for hell but now I'm down for heaven if you can't come undone think about what God has done for you if you can't come undone in the presence of God you wi
ll never love God the way you've been commanded to and you'll never be able to teach your kids to do it now listen we all have different personalities God created us all differently we are fearfully and wonderfully made totally unique from anyone else Society so the way you come undone might be different than how someone else comes up are you coming down might be different than how I am and listen I said there's lots of reasons why we don't come undone but Proverbs chapter 29 verse 25 might be t
he biggest woman says the fear of man brings a snare it and we We Care entirely too much about what other people think of us and we don't focus enough on what God thinks about us so we hold back on loving God with all our heart soul mind and strength because we think people are going to look at us we're just not comfortable doing that in front of anybody but try this if you say you know what and that that's just not me I I'm not going to be the person who's gonna raise my hands or clap or run or
show any excitement in public of what God has done to you first of all you need to work on that but until you get to that point if you're not going for everybody else get along with God and do it which is you and God and if you can't come undone when it's just you and God you need to make sure you've got God in your life and the Holy Spirit doesn't move in your heart the Holy Spirit saved you cleanse you Sanctified you and is coming back and take you to heaven one day that requires some sort of
emotional response on our behalf so if you're not gonna do it in church at least do it before that [Music] turn it backwards chapter 6. we saw what we're supposed to teach our kids we need to teach them to love the Lord their God of all their heart her soul and all their life we see that in verse five but then we see how to teach them to do this in verse 7. verse 7 says Thou shalt teach them diligently about raising kids for God's glory and his honor and the fallen and simple world is not easy
[Music] and here's the thing our kids will never hear the message if we're not diligent about teaching them they look back at verse three Moses says here therefore always and then it begins verse 4 where he says Hear o Israel so Moses had to consistently and constantly call their attention and turn their focus back to God in teaching our kids to love the Lord with all their hard soul and like it's not a one-time conversation it's not a once a week devotional it's not a Sunday or Wednesday discus
sion it's a key we must teach them diligently it's something we need to teach we need to teach and model consistently and check this out we have you Nautilus in a variety of ways look at verse 7 verses if we need to talk about our kids and teach them about God all the time verse 8 says we need to keep this focused in front of them all the time first answers there are homes are our lives and we constantly filled with reminders that teach our kids and point them back to God and this is a thought t
hat Moses emphasizes all throughout the Book of Deuteronomy as he attempts to prepare them for entering into the promised land without in chapter 4 verse 9 if you want to turn there you can see this it says Mo says take key to thyself and keep thy Soul diligently let's not forget the things which which Zion eyes have seen unless they depart from thy part all the news that I like but teach them thy sons and thy Sons Sons later on Deuteronomy chapter 4 verse 8 uses the phrase to observe diligently
so as our kids hear and observe us leading them to live for the Lord they need to see us being diligent in those teachings if we just occasionally bring up spiritual matters that's not going to kill and we talk about God and about his goodness every now and then that's not going to cut it if we want to teach our kids to love the Lord with all their heart their soul and their might as a teaching that Bible Associated needs to be done diligently consistently constantly in the repeated emphasis so
we've seen the three things that our children need to experience in order to grow in their relationship with God that we're commanded to lead them into they need to experience hearing us talk about God they need to experience seeing us live for God they need to experience us teaching them about God and finally today they need to experience us serving God look down at verse 13. Thou shalt fear the lord thy God and serve them and shall swear by his name now we want our kids to love the Lord with
every fiber of their baby we want them to grow to One Day lead their own families to continue following the Lord once they're gone we want them to have some discernment when they make decisions once they leave the home we want them to be wise as they seek the Lord's face and make decisions as a transition out of our house into adulthood we want them to live wisely in Proverbs chapter 9 verse 10 it says that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and that word fear doesn't mean afraid or
frightened or shaking our boots because we're terrified of God it means I have whole wheat and healthy understanding and respect for them the Bible says that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom so do we want our kids to be wise [Music] do we want our kids to have some discernment yes that we need to teach them to fear the lord and look what verse 13 says look what verse 13 says what is it that triggers within our kids mind that teaches them and demonstrates to them that we really do
fear the lord [Music] the last example if you'll notice once again these are not independent statements they're connected the last example was connected by a semicolon this thought is connected with a comma and verse 13 says fear the lord and serve serving God is evidence to others to everyone else and especially to our own kids that we really do honor love and fear God because what we see is that people who really love the Lord serve him and people who just say they love the Lord don't Jesus s
aid in John Chapter 14 verse 15 if you love me my Commandments and guess what serving God as a command first Samuel chapter 12 verse 24 says only fear the lord and serve him in truth with all your heart First Corinthians 15 58 therefore beloved brother be steadfast unmovable always abounding in the work of the Lord for as much that you know your labor is not in vain in the Lord Romans chapter 12 verse 1 present your bodies a Living Sacrifice holy acceptable unto God which is your reasonable serv
ice it is a command to serve the Lord Deuteronomy chapter 13 verse 4 you shall walk half the Lord your God and fear Him keep his Commandments obey his voice and serve him and please hear me I'm not talking about works-based salvation but I am talking about service demonstrated love and fear for God because what we see in verse 13 is it a fear for God is demonstrated by serving him turn over to Malachi chapter 3. let's book the Old Testament Malachi chapter 3 if you have the Pew Bible you can fin
d Malachi chapter 3 on page 468. [Music] Malachi chapter 3. [Music] once you've found that chapter look down to the last verse if you would Malachi chapter three look on the first 18. it says next shall ye return and discern between the righteous and the wicked that's what we want our kids to do right we want to be able to identify between good and bad we don't have to identify between who is actually living for the Lord and who's not we want them to be able to identify right from wrong we just
you shall return in the center between the righteous and the wicked between him that serveth God and him now notice how discernment is made notice how the conclusion is made of whether or not we are identified as being righteous or Wicked notice how it is that our children and everyone else comes to the conclusion of whether or not we really love God or not it's whether or not we're serving God if we live our entire lives talking about God If You're Gonna Learn entire life teaching our kids abou
