FILM DESCRIPTION: "If you build it, he will come." That's the ethereal message that inspires Iowa farmer Ray Kinsella (Kevin Costner) to construct a baseball diamond in the middle of his cornfield. At first, "he" seems to be the ghost of disgraced ballplayer Shoeless Joe Jackson (Ray Liotta), who materializes on the ballfield and plays a few games with the awestruck Ray. But as the weeks go by, Ray receives several other messages from a disembodied voice, one of which is "Ease his pain." He realizes that his ballfield has been divinely ordained to give a second chance to people who have sacrificed certain valuable aspects of their lives. One of these folks is Salingeresque writer Terence Mann (James Earl Jones), whom Ray kidnaps and takes to a ball game and then to his farm. Another is Doc Graham (Burt Lancaster), a beloved general practitioner who gave up a burgeoning baseball career in favor of medicine. The final "second-chancer" turns out to be much closer to Ray. That "magical" field in Dyersville, Iowa still draws thousands of baseball-happy tourists each year. All right. This is fascinating... ...but you don't have the money to bring the mortgage up to date. So, you're still going to have to sell. I'm sorry, Ray. We got no choice. People will come, Ray. They'll come to Iowa for reasons they can't even fathom. They'll turn up your driveway, not knowing for sure why they're doing it. They'll arrive at your door as innocent as children... ...longing for the past. "Of course, we won't mind if you look around," you'll say. "It's only $20 per person." They'
ll pass over the money without even thinking about it. For it is money they have and peace they like. Ray! Just sign the papers. Then they'll walk off to the bleachers... ...and sit in their shirtsleeves on a perfect afternoon. They'll find they have reserved seats somewhere along one of the baselines... ...where they sat when they were children and cheered their heroes... ...and they'll watch the game... ...and it will be as if they dipped themselves in magic waters. The memories will be so thi
ck... ...they'll have to brush them away from their faces. When the bank opens in the morning, they'll foreclose. People will come, Ray. You're broke, Ray. You sell now, or you lose everything. The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It's been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt, and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game. It's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds us of all that once was good.
.. ...and it could be again. People will come, Ray. People will most definitely come. Ray, you will lose everything. You will be evicted. Come on, Ray. I'm not signing.

James Earl Jones could read the back of a shampoo bottle and I would still sit and listen

@michaelgay

"For it is money they have, but peace they lack" - gives me chills every time I hear that part

@dannytheman1313

James Earl Jones just perfectly described the magic of a baseball game.

@ThePresidentOfTheUnitedStates1

Nothing is more American than James Earl Jones talking about Baseball.

@xdeser2

Ginger: "When the bank opens in the morning they WILL foreclose" James Earl Jones: "I find your lack of faith disturbing..."

@haydenlindquist7006

"America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt, and erased again. But baseball has marked the time." Those are some exceptionally powerful words, and one of the reasons baseball is so amazing

@kurtbrown7409

One of the best movie monologs ever in a movie.

@scottherrmann1358

I always loved how the players stopped playing when Terence Mann spoke. The acting, the music, the moment it's all so...perfect.

@bbcoachlara

How can you not be romantic about baseball?

@jamesweekley1087

The "people will come" speech is one of the iconic moments in film history. Jones and Lancaster both poured their natural charisma into their roles for this movie.

@mr.modern4419

Even after 30 plus years, this speech gives me goose bumps and makes me proud to be an American!!! And a baseball lover!!!! James Earl Jones was the perfect person to deliver this love letter to baseball!

@scottherrmann1358

If James Earl Jones says people will come you better damn believe they will. The voice of God!

@jacobjones5269

This speech is so iconic, because it’s exactly how I feel when I go to a game.. As if I’ve been dipped in magic waters, and all my troubles float away as I watch the greatest game ever invented..

@AlanFernandoGamino
