Basketball is a hobby wherein you can gain friends and not gain enemies. Physical game is okay and a baller needs discipline. Win or lose, let us accept it. Let's show sportsmanship. When I was young, I accompanied my father whenever he had local community games. I just watch him play and I do not have much interest in basketball back then. When accompanying my father became a habit, that is when I started to love this sport. That's why I started to try-out during my elementary days. This is how
it all started. Back then, I didn't like computers that much. That's why I am unaware of Filipino basketball Youtube channels such Mavs Phenomenal and HoopX It's all self learning until I became a college varsity. I've been to rigorous training. One of my basketball heroes is Jason Williams A.K.A. White Chocolate and locally, I like the playing style of Terrence Romeo. Probably, because of his moves. Whenever I see them playing, I want and I know to myself that I can do such. Whenever I am on t
he basketball court, I do a lot of training. I even do it alone and mimic their moves. I usually play in Inter-barangay and interblock games. Some barangays even ask me to join their teams as an import player. As a college varsity, I even got a chance to play in provincial leagues. By that chance, I am able to represent Team Cavite (my province) Our rivals were topnotch and it is noticeable that they've been to rigorous training as well. It's tough. We all have unique tempers. I just think that
this is just a game. I need to control my emotions. I think of that until the game is over. Afterwards, we are all friends. Back then, I am super thin and my rivals just hit me. It is still happening but I train myself and improve my physiques. I noticed that I can somehow 'not be stunned that much' with the physical game that basketball entails. One must apply the values and learnings you've gained in basketball. Example is to be a disciplined person. Just like in my case,  my studies are at s
take if I do not do well with my athletic scholarship. I should not take that scholarship for granted. I must show good attendance and performance in our hoop training. I need to be 'at my best' in both academics and varsity. Otherwise, I won't finish my degree and will lose my scholarship. I must strive in both worlds (academics and varsity). Your team's game will be mediocre if you do not work hard as a point guard. Same in our lives, you need to be at your best and do your role at an optimal
level. I am grateful that I can apply my learnings to the youth of Barangay Granados, GMA, Cavite. I am able to train and coach them whenever they have basketball games. My advice to youth..., avoid vices. Look for hobbies (good vices), that will benefit our health and wellbeing. Especially during this time of pandemic, we still need to stay healthy and active. Do home workouts. Practice dribbling at home. :-) Don't let your life be wasted and be placed in wrong directions. Do what is right for
your health and for your own preferred success. As a Filipino baller, I am proud to say that Filipinos are competitive. We thrive and unite, no matter what. I am Ron Alcober, a basketball scholar (UPHS GMA) & Barangay Youth Councilor (Granados, GMA Cavite)
