It's an epic workout in metro Detroit that's free and open to the public. In this edition of Fitness over 40, we're tackling the stairs at Bloomer Park. All right, you guys ready to go back up? It's a long way to the top so, get ready to burn some serious calories. I'll show you how it's done. Hello, I'm Ann Marie Wakula. If you're looking for a great way to build strength, burn calories and improve your heart health, look no further than the stairs. Whether you're at home, the office or a local
park, climbing the stairs is an efficient low impact cardio workout. And if you really want to challenge, just head to Bloomer Park in Rochester Hills. The stairs are an amazing workout because they’re god for cardio. It's really good calf workout, quads, glutes, hamstrings. It's an amazing lower body workout really good for your lungs and for your heart. [All right, guys, we're almost there. You're doing great.] It's been a while since I've done cardio so it was hard for me, really hard. I had
to take a step back for a second and just walk them, which is fine too. No one can argue that Bloomer Park has the toughest stairs around. I put a weight vest on, 12 pounds and then you run as many as you can until you got to walk them. The last 15 stairs are brutal. Just to go down and come up I think of all ages definitely is a badge of honor. When you're just starting out with a steps, it can seem really intimidating. You get down to the bottom, you look up and there's all these stairs. It's
pretty awesome, though. The recovery comes when you're going back down. Definitely stay hydrated, just listen to your body and take it one step at a time literally. [Good job guys. Good job.] The nice thing about the stairs, you can tackle them at your own pace. Start slow and work your way up. Remember to stretch and do a light jog as a warm-up and always talk to your doctor before starting a new fitness routine. You'll find more challenging stairs in Holland, Michigan and Saugatuck, or use an
y staircase near you. For more great ideas, visit ahealthiermichigan.org. This is Fitness over 40 brought to you by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. I made it in a minute and 12 seconds. Alright, my workouts done.
