Freedom Incorporated a nonprofit championing civil rights for decades started by a man with a passion for his community Fred Carl's founded the organization decades ago his memory lives on through his family leading the same Community he loved tonight for Black History Month our own Megan abundance talk with the Cs family she shares how they're continuing the family Legacy and what it means to be a black leader in the Kansas City area it's pretty much a requirement I don't think you can live in
Kansas City and have the last name of curls and not be involved in politics it's the curl family business so what African-Americans did is they created their own we've all had to canvas neighborhoods or pass out ballots on Election Day Monica curls will tell you all about her family state legislators Schoolboard members and City counselors all focused on Community Development it's so interesting when people are so negative about politics or oh I'm not a politician and but I grew up around politi
cians so for me they were loving and they were committed to the community and they were you know about sacrifice public servants striving for political engagement my grandfather was one of the founders of Freedom Incorporated which is a black political organization here in Kansas City and they've been influencing politics for decades and so my grandfather was one of the founding members my dad was its president during some of its really pivotal years now on display an exhibit honoring Fred curls
and his family's work so very proud a family that was dedicated to make things better for Generations to come perseverance and that's one of the things that I've uh learned uh I ran for office a few times before uh and so if it's a dream or something that you want to do don't be upset that you've lost because it just may not be the right timing reminding my mom about a political cartoon that had been in the Kansas City Star and had a caricature of my dad sitting behind a desk with freedom and i
t said when we suggested you people be involved in the political process we had no idea you'd be good at it and so I just absolutely love that because it is very T you know everybody just had low expectations you know of what Freedom was going to be able to do of what curls were going to be able to do there is a lot of history and and that's a good thing too and we need to share it with our younger people and some of our older people so they'll remember it a family that has heart for collaborati
