if you're squatting in Georgia Now's the Time to Leave because we're going to we're going to give you a place in the county jail to stay squats put un notice a bill making its way through the state capital would make staying at a home that you're not allowed to be in a criminal act Fox Rob derenzo joins us in studio tonight Rob people at home might be surprised that that wasn't already a thing in our state yeah guys good evening to you both well a lot of these squatters have been counting on a r
eally drawn out eviction process in the court and the courts have been jammed up since the pandemic right now it sometimes could take up to eight maybe even 10 months to get a home back that you already own under current law these squatters get treated just like a tenant would we're going to treat them like criminals and that's what they are Marietta State Rep Devon Seau says people have been abusing the status quo to stay in homes they don't belong in Ron and mcabe live through that nightmare t
his is my home and there's somebody in there back in November mcab told Fox 5 it team reporter Dana fowl that they changed the locks on his home in Tucker emotionally it's it's frustrating it's scary and probably the number one is it's extremely stressful text messages show the man in his house tried to extort mcab to try to get him to leave our camera happened to capture US Marshals closing in on one of those squatters arrested on unrelated charges mcabe ended up selling the house and now it's
all water under the bridge but he knows everyone hasn't been as lucky it's an extreme ex stressful situation so I my heart goes out to the folks that find themselves in that situation currently and again hopefully this this bill will will take care of that issue in a expeditious manner they'll be charged with a misdemeanor um and they'll be kicked out of the house and if they want to present a fake lease we'll take that they'll get charged with a felony uh for presenting a falsified document tha
t misdemeanor would be trespassing people accused of squatting would have 3 days instead of a matter of months to show a least or other proof that they're allowed to be there after that they'd be sent packing a shout out to Dana F Fox News to yourself for you know bringing this to the attention number one of the public and then by virtue of that to our state legislators if you're squatting in Georgia Now's the Time to Leave because we're going to we're going to give you a place in the county jai
l to stay and this bill has broad bipartisan support it's now in the hands of the state senate to vote on its next step is its rules committee before a full vote on the floor guys yeah again it's really crazy that this was an already an existing law mindboggling yeah in favor of homeowners and so frustrating for a lot of victims out there absolutely Rob right thanks thanks Rob

I hope this bill goes through in the senate. This bill needs to be made law across the country. Home owners should not be going through this.
Every state politician in the country needs to follow .
Squatting should be a felony, not a misdemeanor. Breaking and Entering is already a felony.
The mental health and distress that this prolonged situation causes for homeowners is enormous. It should be a felony anywhere in the world.
It should’ve been law in the first place
Mind blowing that you can stay in someone else’s house, ruin the interior and have no consequences. Absolutely mind blowing.
Yes indeed it is out of control in Georgia. Thank you for finally passing a bill to help homeowners. Bipartisan wow, way to go Ga! That's how you get it done......
Misdemeanor? For stealing and destroying a house! Should be felony charges with minimum 10 years in prison. The criminals are allowed to walk free and take all their stolen merchandise with them.
georgia is the place to be! Californians will be moving to georgia in droves! thank you Georgia 👍💖💖💖
California needs to do this
Leaving a house unoccupied for any length of time gives squatters the opportunity to break in and settle.
Finally....I hope other states follow....I never understood why squatters have more rights.....you can have more than one property occupied or not and should not have to worry about squatters
Nah it needs to be a felony
Every state should make squating a felony ..with a 5 year mandatory prison term for the first offense 20 years for a 2nd offense and life in prison for a 3rd offense
3 days is too much. They have to be forced to leave immediately. Most of the time they will vandalize the place before they leave. In Detroit, the police will make them leave the same day, and if they come back they go to jail. The put that into effect about 5-6 years ago.
Thanks God, my Chicago government get's $3,000 for each squatter. My State government loves criminals because they are criminals
Up here in the mountains of North Georgia, the question isn't whether squatting is legal, its more of if squatting is healthy or conducive to a long life. And don't even think of coming up here and running that crap that went on down at 6 Flags this past weekend. There is a long tradition of adhering to the Triple S Rule up here. You might be missed, but you won't never be found.
Common sense law
Clearly the legislators are not too bright amd worried about the wrong things. What needs to be criminalized is making housing inaccessible
I hope the bill pass
