before the rise of the Nazis in 1933 Germany was  a democratic state known as The Weimar Republic which lasted from 1918 to 1933 the country was  a federation made up of various States including prussia Bavaria and Saxony each with their own  political police forces. the Weimer Republic's Constitution guaranteed individual rights and  legal protections such as freedom of speech freedom of the press and equality before the  law these rights were meant to be upheld by the political police preventi
ng them from conducting  arbitrary actions. despite this the political police were still active during this time. the  main focus of the political police during the Weimar Republic was to contain political violence  among extreme right and left movement particularly targeting the Nazi party and the Communist party  which were gaining popularity in Germany starting in 1930. over the next 3 years leading to the  rise of the Nazis the political police struggled to respond to the often violent mass
movements  associated with these parties. when Adolf Hitler was appointed the chancellor of Germany in January  the 30th 1933 he and the Nazi leadership began planning the establishment of a dictatorship and  the elimination of all political opposition. one of their key strategies was to wield Germany  political police to achieve these objectives but they faced significant challenges. first  the Weimar Republic's Constitution which was still in effect provided legal protections against  arbitrar
y police actions thus limiting the Nazi's ability to use the police force to suppress  opposition. additionally Germany's political police forces were decentralized reporting  to various state and local governments and not directly to Hitler as a Chancellor. these  obstacles initially hindered the Nazi regime's ability to utilize the political police for their  purposes. for instance during the early days of the Nazi regime they could not simply instruct the  political police to arrest Communist
s without a legal basis however as the Nazis Consolidated  their power they found ways to overcome these barriers and effectively coopt Germany's political  police for their agenda the appointment of Hitler as a Chancellor marked the beginning of a  new era in which the political police would become a crucial instrument in enforcing the  Nazi regime's totalitarian rule. in February 1933 emergency decrees were swiftly put in place  to overrall Germany's legal and constitutional framework one of t
he most significant decrees was  the Reichstag fire decree issued in February the 28th 1933 which suspended individual rights and  legal protections effectively dismantling the right to privacy. this suspension facilitated  the police in their investigation interrogation and arrest of political opponents granting them  the authority to read private mail eavsdrop on telephone conversations and conduct warrantless  searches of homes the Nazi regime's objective was to establish centralized politica
l police  force directly accountable to Nazi leadership which required an extensive reform of the existing  decentralized policing system over several years this process included the Nazification of the  entire police system during the early 1930s the political police remained under the jurisdiction  of local government making it susceptible to local power struggles. however by the end of 1936  the Nazi regime had successfully centralized the political police force under the leadership  of ss ch
ief Heinrich Himmler forming what became known as The Gestapo Authority was further  solidified in the summer of 1936 when it was Amalgamated with the criminal police to create a  new entity known as the security police which was led by Himmler's Deputy Reinhard Heydrich. the  gestapo was staffed by plainclothes. officers often referred to as Gestapo agents most of whom  were highly trained professionals many of these individuals have prior experience as detectives  or political policemen during
the Weimer Republic for example Heinrich muller who had worked for  the Munich police since 1990 became the head of the Gestapo in 1939 bringing with him extensive  expertise knowledge and skill to the organization while a significant number of Gestapo Agents were  professionals some individuals were recruited from the SS intelligence service embracing Nazi  ideology with little to no formal police training these individuals were enlisted as part of ss  leader Heinrich Himmler's vision to trans
form the police system into an ideologically driven  institution consequently the Gestapo combined the expertise professionals with the fervor and  ideological commitment of Nazi loyalists thus becoming an entity shaped by both professional  proficiency and zealous allegiance to the Nazi cause the Gestapo was tasked with the broad  mandate to investigate and combat all attempts to threaten the state according to the Nazi regime's  expansive interpretation these threats encompassed a wide range o
f behaviors from organized  political opposition to individual critical remarks about the Nazis even the mere association  with certain categories groups of people could be deemed threatening by the government in response  to this perceived spectrum of risks the Gestapo was granted significant Authority by the Nazi  dictatorship one of the primary method through which the Gestapo fulfilled its mission was  by enforcing a series of new Nazi laws many of these laws broadly criminalized criticism o
f  the regime marking it as a security threat for instance in December 1934 a law was implemented  that made it illegal to voice any dissent against the Nazi party or the regime even telling  a joke about Hitler could be construed as a malicious attack against the state or the party  leading to arrest by the Gestapo or trial before A specialized court and the possibility of  imprisonment in a concentration camp however the Gestapo reach extended far beyond monitoring  individual behaviors the or
ganization actively implemented and enforced Nazi ideology which  categorized entire groups of people as racial or political adversaries membership in the  Communist party or having a Jewish background was sufficient to Brand someone as a threat  to the state thereby making them subject to the attention of the Gestapo during the 1930s  the vast majority of Aryan Germans didn't come into conflict with or anticipate encountering  the Gestapo however for political dissenters religious non-conformis
ts including Jehovah's  Witnesses homosexuals and Jews. the presence of the Gestapo represented an ever-present and  formidable threat the Nazi regime granted the Gestapo agents significant authority to determine  the fate of individuals they apprehended one of the most notable Powers bestowed upon the Gestapo  was the ability to directly send individuals to concentration camps a practice referred to as  protective custody by employing protective custody the Gestapo could circumvent the judicial
system  thus preventing those detained from seeking legal counsel appealing the sentence or presenting a  defense in court in certain cases the Gestapo even utilized protective custody to override  court rulings particularly if they deemed the Court's sentence too lenient. institutionally the  Gestapo operated without legal or administrative supervision rendering it exempt from the oversight  by any other organization including the Judiciary this meant that the decisions made by the Gestapo  we
re unassailable with the organization serving as the ultimate Authority the Gestapo carried out  their mission of suspicious or unlawful Behavior by individuals additionally other policing  Authority and Nazi organizations could also report potential crimes or perceived threats  to the Gestapo. denunciations could be severe throughout the course of an investigation Gestapo  officers conducted interviews with Witnesses undertook searches of homes and apartments and  carried out surveillance. in N
azi Germany there existed no restrictions on these activities as  the Gestapo didn't require a warrant to read suspected mail enter a residence or EES drop on  telephone conversations were brutal they seldom personally executed those they apprehended  nevertheless some individuals did perish during interrogations or while in gabo custody  individual gabo possessed the authority to make crucial decisions about the fate of individuals  they had the discretion to exhibit leniency by releasing indiv
iduals dismissing cases or issuing  warnings and fines conversely gabu agents also had the power to be unyielding detaining individuals  indefinitely Or condemning them to internment in a concentration camp there was little to no  external oversight of those decisions as the monitoring of such determinations was conducted  Solly within the gabu itself the Nazis viewed Germany's Jewish population as a racial threat to  both the German people and their regime thus the gabu had the responsibility o
f policing Jews  as part of its mission to safeguard the state a role that became increasingly significant  during the latter half of the 1930s the gabu involvement in anti-jewish measures underwent a  shift with the introduction of the nurburg laws in the Autumn of 1935 which prohibited future  marriages between Jews and non-jewish Germans and made extra marital relations between the  two groups a criminal offense labeled as race defilement as a response of these laws gabo  offices across Germa
ny established specialized Jewish departments to investigate cases related  to race defilement and other anti-jewish measures
