meanwhile Poland's prime minister Donald Tusk told reporters outside the White House yesterday he hopes house Speaker Mike Johnson will realize inaction could cost thousands of lives in Ukraine he said quote this is not some political Skirmish that only matters here in America the absence of this positive decision of Mr Johnson will really cost thousands of lives there children women he must be aware of his personal responsibility joining us now democratic congresswoman Mikey Cheryl of New Jerse
y she's a Navy veteran and member of the House select committee on China she also co-sponsored the bipartisan Bill the house is considering at the top of the hour that could ban the social media app Tik Tock in the US we'll get to that in just a moment but first we want to ask you about the attempt in the house to pass an aid package for Ukraine can you explain this discharge petition effort well thanks for having me m yes um we have worked incredibly hard to get the speaker to bring up the Sena
te's bipartisan supplemental bill which would fund Ukraine um fund our allies across the world provide humanitarian assistance and yet they have refused he has refused again and again and again and so to yesterday we introduced what's called a discharge petition this is a petition where if you get get enough people on it and remember normally we have about 300 votes in the house to support our Ukrainian brothers and sisters in their fight against Putin in their fight for democracy this is a mean
s of getting a bill on the floor if the majority won't bring it up so we are going to need Republican help on this what we need is some members of the Republican conference who have said time and again that they are the strongest supporters of Ukraine that you could imagine that they believe in the Democratic fight against Putin we need to come forward sign this discharge petition so we can in fact get Aid to Ukraine congresswoman good morning so for a long time House Republicans your colleagues
said we can't do anything about the borders of Ukraine until we do something about our own borders to which the United States Senate on a bipartisan basis said okay we'll go do something they did something presented to the house which flatly rejected it led by house Speaker Johnson so at this point when you talk to your Republican colleagues what is their rationale for denying the to Ukraine um Willie dealing with the house Republican conference is sort of like going into the upside down it is
really difficult um the first thing that I heard from my Republican colleagues after the Border um deal was stripped out of the supplemental because Trump didn't want to fix the border at this point uh was that we were going to bring the supplemental over I said could we get any border funding we do have problems at our border that have to be addressed today and they said no not one penny for the Border we want a we want a clean supplemental fast forward until today we're now they're complaining
there's no border money in it um we have got to get the supplemental passed and then we've got to move on to how we are going to address the problems at the border um again it's very very difficult because to date and and you know in my time working in Congress when Trump was President Trump has always put himself and his political future ahead of the needs of this country and he continues to do so even as simply a candidate out of office congresswoman good to see you this morning so let's talk
about what's going to happen today The Tick Tock hearing and vote so talk to us about why you propos this legislation what it would do and why you feel like it's so important so this is really important legislation I sit on the special committee for competition with the Chinese Communist party and we have heard brief after brief after brief about this platform and how dangerous it can be to our national security we saw the senate about a year ago attempt to weigh in on this issue and then we sa
w hundreds of millions of dollars being spent by Tik Tock to kill that legislation in the Senate so we have been working um since that time to come up with a bill that meets the Constitutional standards that are incredibly important to us um and that also protects our national security and this is what we're introducing what it's not a ban um that is Tik Tock language that is sort of the the push they're putting out what it is is a means of saying that a foreign adversary should not be able to c
ontrol the media control the messaging in such a way it it really would be as if during the Cold War we allowed Russia to have ownership of ABC NBC CBS The New York Times The Wall Street Journal and this is a platform that simply does not care about freedom of speech they routinely um censor discussions of the weager they censor discussion of Tian square or Hong Kong we had a woman in New Jersey who was banned from Tik Tock for trying to talk about the weer genocide this is a an organization thi
s is a platform that you know undermines freedom of Association by using the the app to locate where journalists are and where whistleblowers are so they can shut down freedom of the press so it's really I think at this point necessary that the Chinese Communist Party divest of this platform so that we can continue to run it in a way that is more commensurate with our values and our national security democratic congresswoman Mikey Cheryl of New Jersey as always thank you so much for being on the
show this morning all right take care

As long as MAGA exists, this country is doomed 😳

@michelemarr76

Stand with Ukraine! We MUST pass funding for Ukraine, NOW!

@kathrinekerns8398

Get it done. With or without Mike Johnson. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡²πŸ’™πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦

@peterbrooke8207

Get Buck to sign before he leaves

@Doodelz02

There was a time when the integrity of the USA was integral to its existence. The USA promised to have Ukraine's back. To back away mid-fight? To let them die? In support of the wishes of one person? You're better than this, US! 😒

@daisyeaker7625

15 Republicans have announced they are retiring from public service. Do you think a third of them could come on board?

@maja-danmark9362

I hope the discharge petition goes through. Long 30 days Mike Johnson will be remembered in Europe

@natalieturko4808

Tying the border issue to Ukraine aid was just an EXCUSE not to support Ukraine. Any excuse would have sufficed. MAGA Republicans could just as easily have asked for a unicorn or a leprechaun. Absolutely disgusting!

@sheilabatey492

Yet Johnson being the good Christian he is supposed to be does what the Tangerine Toad tells him what to do.

@robd5254

Vote blue for our country or vote red with and make America part of russia.

@user-ln3bd9gz5v

MAGA needs to apply Christianity to their politics!

@joseanker2059

The Speaker is Trump’s bumboy. Trump says β€˜no aid for Ukraine’

@wonder6789

Vote OUT the traitors this November. Vote BLUE.

@lisatbury

Thank you for interviewing a House Member who is rational, thoughtful in her responses. I wish there were more interviews from both parties of these types of House Members. It seems so many of the squeaky, conspiracy theorist members get more media time. More please of this! Show what normal can look like.

@thomascaldwell3275

Wake up the Republicans! Slumbering at this critical time leads to endarkenment... πŸ™ˆ πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸ’™πŸ˜ŠπŸ’™πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

@BrianBoniMakes

Why does not the post office operate a verified internet service that would work something like certified mail? Companies will always try to raise the price and steal our data.

@andrewstevenson118

@2:35 Nice. A "Stranger Things" reference. πŸ™‚

@anthonyweeks5108

American borders first.the discuss it.$5 billion for border wall was too expensive. Remember?

@paulrandolph8469

So glad you're doing this now, but what took so long?
