Many change programs have
some kind of program management. Some will take a very passive role, while others are extremely active
in all phases of a transformation. An activist TO is actively involved in and supports the overall project management, but it relies on individual initiative
owners to take the accountability for the delivery and for the success
of each individual initiative. Based on our experience, activist
TO’s are the most effective in delivering impact. TO’s are typically led by a
Chief
Transformation Officer, or a CTO, who together with
the CEO and sponsors, becomes part of the
Transformation Committee. The Transformation Committee
will set the overall vision, ambition and general program, as well as signing off on financial and operational targets. The CTO also leads
the Transformation Office, which orchestrates and tracks
overall program progress, resolves issues and communicates that progress to different stakeholders. Workstream leaders work hand-in-hand
with the CT
O and TO team to ensure the transformation success. The Workstream leader helps to
guide bottom up planning and day to day execution
of the resulting initiatives. Supporting and encouraging
individual initiative owners where needed. Critically, the Workstream leader
also proactively calls out and helps to manage
interdependencies and risks throughout the life of the transformation. Within each workstream
their initiative owners. Each initiative owner leads
one or more initiatives which are each
specific projects
that fit within a workstream. These initiative owners personally ensure
delivery of each milestone. Where appropriate, they may also
serve as subject matter experts who provide support to other
initiatives in the transformation.
