How Do You Justify Killing Insects? | Insects Killed During Farming | Animal Rights Lecture | Q & A

People often point out how a Vegan diet is in fact not "cruelty free" as people have to engage in agriculture to get the plants that Vegans eat. Agriculture usually involves the use of pesticides which repel and kill insects. Agriculture also involves the use of tractors and harvesters which could also kill or cause harm to rodents, snakes and insects. So even Vegans who consume only plant based food also support a system that kills animals, does this now justify eating meat, dairy, eggs and honey? So when pesticides are sprayed on plants To not allow insects to eat them So millions of insects are also being killed So that is like a more number compared to actual poultry numbers So how do you justify the death of so many insects who also feel pain? So what I first suggest is that I will give you a long answer In it's entirety and then if you are not satisfied with it you can ask me again Because it will not be good if we just go back and forth You mentioned the point where we Vegans also s
upport an industry In which we consume plants and in order to grow those plants Insecticides and pesticides are used which kill insects That's not the only form of violence we Vegans support There are 4 areas that Vegans do not have a solution to And I will name them all to you First one is what you said which is pest animals Second thing I can state is... I take medications when I am sick When I am sick I go to the doctor And the medications are tested on animals I am aware of this Third point
Even if I choose to buy rice, dal and vegetables What if an ox was used to plough the field to make those vegetables? I am still taking part in that exploitation as well And the final point is Give me a second We are right now standing in a building, a room here and talking There could have been a forest here earlier Which had to be cleared off The animals there killed So I can now stand here and talk about animal rights Pretty ironic isn't it? Right Veganism... Vegans first of all are not perfe
ct by any stretch Okay? We live in a non vegan society In a non vegan system That is built and established by non vegans In this current establishment, this current system that we live in We are doing the best we can We Vegans are not trying to say, ohh no, that's not violence I'm saying no, you are right That is violence, that is wrong And what I am supporting is wrong But I don't know what is the solution to that Now if someone can stand up and say to me "Hey Arvind" I think you should do so,
so and so to stand up against that And if that answer is reasonable I think it is only fair that I take it up as a moral obligation But as of now we Vegans do not have a solution to any of these Animal testing, clearing of forests to build buildings We don't know what to do But here's the thing I want to say though Just because I cannot be perfect everywhere Doesn't mean that I will stop being perfect where I can be perfect This is known in English Have you heard of something called as a logical
fallacy? Do you know what a logical fallacy means? Some of you know? Yeah So this is right now A combination of two logical fallacies It's called as a Tu Quoque fallacy and an appeal to futility fallacy "Since you kill insects" "Therefore how can you say/condemn me killing animals?" But that's not how logic works Because if you were to go to court, on trial right now And the judge told you "I condemn you as a murderer" You can't point at someone and say "He's a murderer too" If both are murdere
rs then both need to be punished It's not like... Two wrongs don't make a right So what I say is if you can help me identify And change the ways what I do as a Vegan right now Which makes sense Then definitely I will accept it If you say no, since you are not perfect Therefore it also justifies others also consuming meat, dairy and eggs That becomes a logical fallacy and second thing is that like I told you Right now on Earth I speak Veganism encompasses all animal rights But I stand here speaki
ng against the meat, dairy and egg industries Because they make up 98% of all cruelty happening to animals on Earth To animals right now So I am saying I have a solution to 98% of the problem And I agree 2% is still wrong but I don't have a solution All I say is just because I don't have a solution to the 2% Please do not ignore the solution that is there for the 98% Think of it this way, imagine tomorrow is an exam for you and you have prepared well When you go and see the exam paper there are
100 questions You know the answer to 98 questions but you don't know the answer to 2 of them Now just because you don't know the answer to 2 will you leave everything blank? Obviously not, because that doesn't make any sense Similarly all I can ask of people is that Just because...I am not god We Vegans are not perfect but... We can solve one of the biggest problems All we are doing is asking you to consider that

@Vegeta379

I think it's also important to mention that by eating meat, the animal who died ate at least 18-20 times more plants than if we were to eat those plants directly. So by eating the animals, we're killing the animal and 18-20 times more plants and insects. Also, insects feel pain and deserve to be free from human cruelty and unnecessary killing, but their level of consciousness is probably lower than animals, so the level of emotional pain and probably physical pain that they endure is not the same (of course, still horrible).

@BendeMark

Was dying to hear his response to the question: “does it answer your question?”. Spot on.

@GG-mu4wg

Without a doubt one of the best speakers for animal rights. Thank you so much for your level headed approach, the movement needs more like you. Best regards from the UK.

@vijaydev47

Excellent point Arvind. Many a times my friends who are non veg lovers all of a sudden start the same argument. At times I would be clueless and give up proving my point. Your answer was brilliant. Thks bro.

This guy is Amazing... Earthling Ed of India! 🌟💚

@voiceofvegans

Very well explained. I think these 4 areas are legit problems to which we need a solution. But to participate in the solution/discussion honestly, one needs to be a vegan first. Solve what you can first and then focus on other problem areas. Else it is all an appeal to futility.

@toutvabien2241

Arvind, thank you. Your lectures are an invaluable resource for those of us engaged in activism.

@JL-zm6md

Being vegan results in the fewest plants being killed and the fewest insects being killed. The questioner is unwittingly making an argument for veganism. "So to be vegan is not perfect, but it helps reduce the suffering of animals" - Thích Nhất Hạnh

@tableboy8299

That was such a well put out explaination to the question Really appreciable ✨

@priamalyath6056

brilliant reply as always Arvind...huge respect

@kalaiyarasank2

Exam scenario is an very Excellent example sir.📏📐📝🔍

@beastvg123

Great job! Another good thing to mention would have been the deaths of insects for the sake of growing plants for fuel and animal feed, which makes up the majority of insect deaths in crop production.

@chrishineshtf

Great and well thought out answer! Keep up the amazing work ❤

@SikanderG

Good response. Only point I'll add is that the fallacy is called 'whataboutism'. 'Tu quoque' is a species of whataboutism where the person making the fallacy is directly addressing the person making the criticism.
