what's going on ladies and gentlemen my name is Spencer ball from bar High Media and today I just want to share with you why I got into vlogging I got into vlogging as kind of a passion project with my girlfriend and I we're both shift workers and we both really enjoy doing Endurance Sports so I just had an idea one day it would be really cool to share our adventures with everyone and hope to inspire or motivate others to come along with us on the journey so we had the niche the niche was simply
being Chef workers and doing Endurance Sports so I was like okay I have an idea let's run with this so I came up with the name the shift work athlete because I do different types of Endurance Sports and weight training and stuff like that I guess you could really say start off with your niche as your number one Focus like what is it that you want to be vlogging about you could be really broad as well which is totally cool and there's nothing against that it's gonna be harder for you to really b
uild that audience ends and then the second thing was just getting started started to focus on bringing the camera outside of just sitting down and doing content like I'm doing with you guys right now so I would be running out on the trails I'd be talking about you know the activity that I was doing at hand and things that I had up and coming you know just really trying to build out a story having a storyboard or something that you want to give to your audience so they could be along with you in
stead of just a bunch of random pieces going by like you know the start the middle and the ending right so some sort of conclusion at the very ending of whatever it is your your vloggers you're going to be building skills along the way and I know it's gonna seem super nerve-wracking and frustrating at the very beginning trying to figure out like you know how do I edit how do I record something how do I talk to the camera and I just think that's something that's going to come over time so like do
n't be in a rush on on mastering those skills right away it's going to take time it is a patience game and you know you got to think about what's why are you doing it it's something that's going to develop over time right and that's going to lead me into the fourth point is like being passionate about what you're doing and not really like searching for some monetary reason behind it or sponsorships or whatever it may be that you're you're trying to achieve it's just simply the fact that this is
something that you want to share with with a like-minded individuals and and just have fun that was one thing that really attracted me to watching YouTubes was the fact that they were having so much fun and I wanted to share that fun with other people as well you know going out and doing a Spartan Race or a triathlon or or weightlifting competition I wanted to share that Journey but not even just share it I want to look back at it and be like wow this is what life is all about As I Grew with bec
oming a vlogger I I had to look at how can I basically increase my skills around videotaping and so I invested into a GoPro right so that would be probably tip number five is investing into the proper equipment that you need to be successful with whatever the passion project may be that you have in hand right so for me it's vlogging so I felt like you know what having something is going to be way more durable something that I could be a little bit more aggressive with bring it into the water whe
n I'm swimming or if I'm running out in Trails there's going to be dust I might drop the GoPro I found a better Groove with the GoPro it was easy to click on and off and and just focus on doing one thing and that was just simply recording the content and also the stabilization that was in the GoPro as well which was huge uh game changer for me like not trying to figure out how to stabilize my my camera and like really holding my hand super steady it had built-in stabilization so that was a huge
win for me now we got the content how do we edit the content you gotta look at your devices you have in hand if you're on a budget if you're trying to do this on a budget you gotta just do with what you have so yes you could edit videos from your phone probably not the most efficient way you could edit from your computer which is what I would highly recommend a desktop or a laptop so for me at the time I had this like gaming laptop it it wasn't the best for editing but I did use it for probably
about a year and I started off with free software there was iMovie that I couldn't use that on my laptop of course it was a Windows but I ended up using DaVinci and then eventually I paid for a service which was Adobe Premiere Pro when I first started editing it wasn't perfect don't get discouraged around your skill set when it comes down to editing and filming the content just get started it's gonna be sloppy it's gonna be a mess it's eventually going to get better as you progress with your ski
lls and learning new things as you evolve and I'll show an example here the sandwiches chicken with Italian dressing mustard and lettuce what's going on everyone so we just uh packed the car we're getting ready to head out to Christie's Conservation Area my girlfriend does not want to be in the video say hi so as you can see it wasn't perfect the quality was garbage this was off of my cell phone the audio was horrible but I just got the ball started if you guys want help with that please shoot m
e a comment down below if you want to see how I go about editing a vlog I'll be more happy to share that with you guys but let's move on to the next part which is getting your own YouTube the name of your YouTube can be anything whatever you feel that is relevant to you or you could go something that's really super Niche down for me I just ran with the shift work athlete YouTube the next thing I had to think about was like okay how often do I want to be posting this video and I just posted whene
ver I could and one thing I forgot to talk about is the duration I think anything under 15 minutes is more than enough 50 minutes max but ideally shorter the better you really want to keep it condensed right so that's the thing you're trying to look at retention keeping people engaged in the video and wanting to stay longer can you go and post your your videos you want to have an appealing or an attractive kind of title with it right I can't remember what my first one was I think it probably had
this is my first Vlog as a shift or triathlete you could be more strategic with it I would recommend you to be more strategic with your titles keep them very short don't make them super long like a paragraph you could do that all in the description so that was the next thing I got into my description I would give a little bit more brief information on what the Vlog was going to be be about if they were curious to understand more of what it was that they were about to watch you want to make tags
for your videos that are specific to what that video is if somebody were to search up shift work and being an athlete people will be able to find that in the tags and that would give them more of like a search engine optimization base to narrow down to whatever that topic or tag line may be when they go into YouTube's you know search because that's the thing it's very important that you try to optimize your YouTube so it could really attract people that are are looking for whatever the content
that you're you're putting out you know something to also be mindful of is your thumbnails you can use tools or software like canva Photoshop you could take their templates that are in there get a photo of yourself or the activity that you're doing throw it in there something that's going to be eye-catchy good quality is really important my my thumbnails were garbage they were garbage and then if you want to become a little bit more customized you can merge into Photoshop and and really build it
out your way and how you want it to look the next thing would be is looking at ways to advance and grow your skills so you could take courses on udemy you can watch YouTube videos I've invested into more equipment to have higher quality I got a drone now and I'm still using the same GoPro and I use a more professional camera like this one that I'm talking to at this moment so you know there's so much room to really evolve and build your skills out as a vlogger but don't be afraid you're gonna h
ave moments of feeling like an imposter or whatever you're doing isn't good enough or do people really care who cares what people think about I think at the end of the day is that you're having fun and it's a new skill and it's just something for you to express your creativity and there's going to be a lot of people out there that are going to appreciate the content that you're putting out and they also enjoy being a part of your journey as well I hope this is valuable and if you have any questi
