so how much do you know about your local nonprofits guess what we are here to get a lesson on what they are and what they do Dana Hagar is the executive director of Nano which is the North Dakota Association of nonprofit organizations thank you so much for being with us today Dana yeah thank you I'm happy to be on and and chat about nonprofits with you guys so nonprofits need to let us know first off what are they um and how can people really understand what they are yeah so that's really funny
and I mentioned earlier um lot of people think they know what nonprofits are but when you get down to it I had a girlfriend tell me she goes it wasn't until you started this job that I really knew what a nonprofit was you know we hear that name thrown around not for-profits NOS um but nonprofits are organizations that are out there in our community is doing doing good you know they're doing good for the the whole and um they're not making a profit on it they're running a business obviously so th
ey're paying employees they're paying taxes they're doing all the things that they need to do but at the end of of the day nobody owns a nonprofit you're not making a profit off of it sure and why would you say I mean you kind of just answered this but nonprofits are important to have in the community especially so many great ones that we know that we do have here in the 701 yeah they're so important I um I'm kind of on a soapbox right now about nonprofits just because you we talk about we're wa
nting people to come live in our communities whether you're a small community or a large community we want to make our communities the best that they can be and nonprofits are really the pulse or the culture of your community they're the ones that are feeding and Sheltering the homeless they're taking care of our pets or you know if you're a stray dog out there they're the ones that are coming in and taking care of those um there are Arts organizations so they're providing culture for our commun
ities um a lot a lot of times there are Health Care Systems um there are schools so nonprofits impact everybody even if you don't realize it and they really are the pulse of our communities mhm and I was going going to say sometimes they get into it as you mentioned because of their passion but maybe not because of their business wise but that's where nadano is here to also help so you have some upcoming education webinars for 501c3's um Sports organizations I understand January 31st what happen
s at these who can attend these absolutely so Nano's real main focus we do a lot of things but education is one of our pillars that we do we really want to elevate nonprofits um provide resources for them and help them feel confident in what they're doing because they're out there doing good we want them to feel like they know what they're doing um so we provide uh tons of different learning opportunities they're open to anybody a lot of times um if you're Nano member you get either free or redu
ced pricing um but they are always open to all nonprofits okay the one we have coming up on January 31st while we are specified to sports organizations it's not solely for sports or organizations it's for anybody who wants to understand key crucial aspects for nonprofits uh we have an attorney that will be able to come on and really help you understand those MH and you have another conference coming up the 2024 North Kota leadership uh conference in May can you tell us a little bit about that as
well yeah it's our annual conference we bring in nonprofits from across the state it'll be held in bismar um it'll be about two days and it is really just digging into all those problems and issues that nonprofits are having there it's timely topics like we'll talk about artificial intelligence in your nonprofit you know whatever people are really questioning now we focus on those bring in some experts to help educate the nonprofit Community what if someone's watching they think I want to start
a nonprofit or how would I even go about that what advice would you have for them there's so much advice probably call me and I'll talk you through it um no contact data well no maybe don't do that but um we do offer that as through our ass Association we have a checklist like if you're thinking about studying nonprofit here is a checklist and here are all the places you need to go um so you can find that on our website um I also am very um forward about telling people nonprofits aren't easy it
's a lot of work to have a nonprofit and I think a lot of people I'm I care about this I'm going to start a nonprofit well first are you competing with somebody else that's already doing the same Mission let's think about maybe joining them instead of starting a new one but if you do want to start nonprofit and you're ready then we can supply some resources for you so the first question is are you sure yes and the second question is are you sure and then I'm like let me tell you a few things and
then and then I'm like perfect let's do this here's the checklist that you need to know about to get through this well great information for everyone to keep learning Dana thank you so much for being with us yes thank you and for more information go to www. nan. org or you can find them on Facebook under ND nonprofits all right folks
