today I'm in the kitchen making an overnight french toast casserole this is a rich warm comforting meal that's so easy to put together and better yet it's the perfect way to use up stale bread with just a few kitchen Staples you'll have a special occasion breakfast that's almost no effort at all I'm Rebecca and welcome to the kitchen this is how I make French Toast Casserole I'm going to start off with the bread since this decadent breakfast is mostly made of bread and custard the choice of brea
d is going to be crucial for the perfect outcome the casserole will be best with a dried out crusty bread something like sourdough or French bread the drier the bread the more of the rich custard it will soak up this is also a great way to customize your recipe and use up some of the bread in your home that's starting to dry out and go stale don't be afraid to use Quant Brio and even cinnamon rolls that are past their Prime since I'm making mine right after Easter I'm going to be using some left
over Hot Cross Buns rip or slice the bread into cubes if you really want to make this but have no dried bread on hand you can rip the bread into cubes and leave it out overnight to dry or if you're really in a time crunch pop the bread into a low oven to dry out place your bread of choice into a greased ovenproof dish now we can get on with making the second most important part the rich velvety custard making a custard might sound complicated but it's really just a mixture of eggs cream vanilla
and sugar in a large pourable container I'm using a very large glass last measuring cup mix 2 cups of milk a half a cup of heavy cream and pour in a half a cup of sugar now we need to add in six eggs the egg yolks are going to add that velvety richness and the egg whites are going to set the custard as it cooks and my flavoring is going to be 3 tpoon of vanilla I like to crack my eggs into a separate Bowl first just in case any stray shells fall in this makes it a lot easier to fish them out giv
e the mixture a whisk to break up the eggs and incorporate everything [Music] [Music] together gently pour the mixture over top the dried bread cubes the bread is going to act like a sponge and soak up all the custard mixture but it needs time so I'm going to cover the casserole and leave it in the fridge to do its magic overnight or at least 6 hours that is the beauty of this casserole all the prep work is done the night before that way in the morning you only need to bake and enjoy which reall
y makes this the perfect Christmas morning or special occasion breakfast the next morning I'm just going to give the casserole a quick stir to make sure any of the drier bits of bread on top get dunked under the liquid to give this soft creamy mixture a little bit of added crunch I'm going to make a dusting of cinnamon sugar to to sprinkle over top in a small bowl I'm going to mix about 2 tbsp of sugar with 1 teaspoon of cinnamon gently dust this evenly over top the bread this is going to melt i
nto the casserole while it's baking in the oven and just give it the most delicate crunch on top bake uncovered in a preheated 350° F or 180° C oven or until golden and the egg custard is set remove and let stand 10 minutes scoop out a generous helping and drizzle with maple syrup [Music] enjoy
